Fantasy
- is a genre of fiction that commonly uses magic and other supernatural phenomena as a primary element of plot, theme, or setting.
- Many works within the genre take place in imaginary worlds where magic is common.
- In popular culture, the genre of fantasy is dominated by its medievalist form
- Fantasy has also included wizards, sorcerers, witchcraft, etc., in events which avoid horror.
- In its broadest sense, however, fantasy comprises works by many writers, artists, filmmakers, and musicians, from ancient myths and legends to many recent works embraced by a wide audience today.
Difference between George R.R. Martin and J. R. R. Tolkien
Ice and Fire Lord of the Rings
Fantasy is more detailed.
Fantasy is broader
Martin has some fantastic creatures but
they are not central. The majority of the tale is
human to human.
Tolkien's world is a mixture of Elves,
Dwarves, humans, Orks who are embroiled in a
war over the fate of Middle Earth.
Martin's story is filled with colorful characters,
some pitiful, some ruthless but all of them
are fascinating.
His story is a complex one , which helps a
personality to destroy itself.
G. Martin as a personality
- George R. R. Martin was born on September 20, 1948, in Bayonne, New Jersey.
- Martin began to have his science-fiction short stories published in the early 1970s .
- Martin was also a college instructor in journalism and a chess tournament director .
- Is a lifelong supporter of the Democratic Party.
- Is a fan of both the new York Jets and New York Giants.
- Martin maintains a LiveJournal account called "Not A Blog" where he posts about his works and various unrelated topics .
- He and his wife Parris are animal activists .
George R. R. Martin's fantasy is not far from reality.
A Game of Thrones has captured the imaginations of millions for the same reason the archetypal dramas of Homer, Sophocles or Shakespeare have lasted for millennia. They show us the conflict
between self-sacrifice and self-interest, between the human spirit and the human
ego, between good and evil. And when we look up from the page we recognize those same conflicts
in the world around us and in ourselves.
Martin in his interviews points at the importance of reading, research work and education.
He encourages his readers to learn history, art, to be an educated personality.
His characters help us to understand psychology and relations between the people.
