Durkheim (1984: 29, 71, 84 105, 120, 126-7, 168, 172)
(mcanique; mechanical)
(Durkheim, 1996: 100)
The social molecules that can only cohere in this one manner cannot therefore move as a unit save in so far as they lack any movement of their own, as do molecules of inorganic bodies. This is why we suggest that this kind of solidarity should be called mechanical. This is why we suggest that this kind of solidarity should be called mechanical. The word does not mean that the solidarity is produced by mechanical and artificial means. We only use this term for it by analogy with the cohesion that links together the elements of raw materials, in contrast to that which encompasses the unity of living organisms. What finally justifies the use of this term is the fact that the bond that thus unites the individual with society is completely analogous to that which links the thing to the person. (Durkheim, 1984: 84)
George Simpson (Durkheim, 1933: 130)
(organique; organic)
(Durkheim, 1996: 101)
The solidarity resembles that observed in the higher animals. In fact, each organ has its own special characteristics and autonomy, yet the greater the unity of the organism, the more marked the individualization of the parts. Using this analogy, we propose to call 'organic' the solidarity that is due to the division of labor. (Durkheim, 1984: 85)

(Durkheim, 1996: 99; 1984: 83)
(solidarit ngative; negative solidarity)
The very expression 'negative solidarity' that we have employed is not absolutely exact. It is not a true solidarity, having its own life and being of a special nature, but rather the negative aspects of every type of solidarity. The first condition for an entity to become coherent is for the parts that form it not to clash discordantly. But such an external harmony does not bring about cohesion. On the contrary, it presumes it. Negative solidarity is only possible where another kind is present, positive nature, of which it is both the result and the condition. (Durkheim, 1984: 75)

The social molecules that can only cohere in this one manner cannot therefore move as a unit save in so far as they lack any movement of their ownWhat finally justifies the use of this term is the fact that the bond that thus unites the individual with society is completely analogous to that which links the thing to the person.
