Day Trips

MontserratThe mountain and Benedictine Monastery of Montserrat, founded in the 11th century, are located in a natural park some 60 kilometres to the west of Barcelona. The Virgin of Montserrat, the patron saint of Catalonia, is worshipped at the shrine in the monastery. The Benedictine community, now numbering some 80 monks, has served the shrine for almost 1,000 years. They are dedicated to a life of prayer, to working and to welcoming pilgrims, making the site a meeting place for prayer and culture. Besides the monks, the escolans, the oldest boys’ choir in Europe, also live in the monastery. Visitors can attend the choral concert given by them every day. The Museu de Montserrat, which has one of the best art collections in Spain, is a must-see. For further information: Pl. de la Creu, s/n 08199 Montserrat. Via Crucis (Way of the Cross) – Sant Miquel (Saint Michael) – Miranda de Fra Garם (Friar Garם). This walk brings us into contact for the first time with the mountain of Montserrat. The paths along this route, which runs very close to the sanctuary, present no difficulty at all. There are just a few uphill stretches, unavoidable if we are to enjoy the magnificent views over the monastery and the mountain. This is the old path that pilgrims used to take to Montserrat.

Santa Cova (Holy Grotto). Twisting and turning, this route, which rewards visitors with splendid panoramic views, is flanked by monuments symbolising the Mystery of the Rosary. These monuments form the most important group of outdoor Modernist (Art Nouveau) sculptures in Catalonia, ending at the Santa Cova, a chapel built into the rock where, according to legend, shepherds found the image of Our Lady. There are no difficulties along this walk

apart from a steep ascent along one stretch, which can be avoided by taking the funicular railway.

The Door to Montserrat - Els Degotalls. The first section on this route comprises a tour of the Monastery buildings. It then continues along a shady path through rich vegetation to a long balcony where the rock has been shaped by ceaselessly dripping water. The route features several monuments dedicated to various artists, as well as majolica offerings to Our Lady. This easy walk leads us northwards,

frequently providing splendid panoramic views of the Bages plain and the Pyrenees.
