Nainital: Soaring temper-atures are taking a toll on Cor-bett National Park. With natu-ral water sources inside thepark practically drying up dueto the intense heat, officialshave been forced to arrangefor water tanks to ensure thatthe animals’ drinking waterrequirements are met.

According to estimates, almost 1.5 lakh litres of wateris being procured every day tofill up more than 100 waterholes in the park. “Although

procuring water has been aregular practice more or lessevery summer, this year, the

dry spell was too long. Hence, our requirement is huge andwe have had to get additional

water for the animals,” park di-rector Sameer Sinha toldTOI.

The exercise started inApril with the onset of sum-mer but as temperatures haverisen, the quantum of waterbeing bought has also goneup. According to officials, ev-ery day, 35-40 tankers arrive atthe park, each carrying 4,000litres of water. This is then fil-led in the water holes eithermanually or with pump sets.

“This is serious. The soar-ing temperatures have result-ed in a situation where wehave had to increasingly de-pend on supplied water to

meet the requirements of theanimals,” said Saket Badola, deputy director of the park.
