crosswords had a sleep in this month. Never mind Ian I have replaced it with a Sudoku & a crappy joke. Good luck everyone. :) One person I miss and I am thinking of you, is my “Peter Parker”, Ken Cline, who has supplied me with some great photos. A big “HI” from me xx It’s our birthday party next month, who's coming? We will have cake!! Always a lovely day, great food and company, mark it in your diary. I am hoping it will be a nice day on Sunday as I am looking forward to the trip to Bayles again, last year was a buzz. So many bikes in the one loca-

Brrr, getting colder every day., and darker quicker. Yep winter is on its way. To bright-en your day our front cover feature this month is Ian Mallows’ bright yellow Lotus Elan, you can read all about it on page 7. we also have Herbies trip to the snow and the Federation picnic and steam display and a little bush mechanics at its finest from the motorbike boys. Duct tape and zip ties , good old boy scouts (maybe Neville should have taken the scout?) You know the old rule? If you cant fix it with duct tape, you haven't used enough duct tape! Well done boys. And for some reason this month everyone wanted to sell something?? Never rains it pours! Well thank you to everyone who has sup-plied articles photos and items to submit this month. My apologies as our supplier of

President’s Report

Two important things that I need to remind you of this month are to have a go at nominat-ing a member for the Norm Tolley Club Person of the Year award and the survey to find out your pref-erences for Club activities. Both these are important to the running of the club. It would be a shame if the club person of the year was not awarded due to insufficient nominations. I know it is hard to choose as there are many of our club members who have done much for the club, but please have a go. Another reminder is that the end of the month run will be on Wednesday 28th May not Thursday as in the events page. Talking about the end of month runs, last month in my report I was worried about the weather for the run on the 23rd. I should not have listened to the weather report as it came out a wonderful day. I have been driving this area now for nearly four years but Ian T was still able to lead us on some roads I have never been on before. There was great scenery and great company during the lunch break. If you can get that car out of the shed then join us. You can, of course, come in any car or bike that you own. It was a shame that the Ride date and the Federation Picnic at Scoresby coincided. I did this part of the program so it was my fault that the bike ride did not come down with us but if you weren’t there, you missed a great day. See Shirley’s and my report. Try to get your names down on the board in the club rooms for the National Heritage Motoring Day Sunday 18th and the factory tour on Wednesday 28th. If you cannot get your names on the list just call a committee member. The Bike Rides as I understand are being enjoyed by all riders and the dates are listed. As usual I welcome the new members. To those of you who are not feeling so good, our thoughts are with you. Until I write again, Happy historic motoring and restoring Colin Higman E d i t o r s N o t e

tion. All enthusiasts talking about the same thing, “bikes”! If you want to see a short movie of last year I have posted the link to our facebook page. Speaking of our facebook page why haven't you liked us yet? Surely more people other than Jason and myself are on facebook …. Lol :oP Keep smiling and keep moving Donna :o)

Our Lotus Elan started life in 1969 as an S4 SE, at the Lotus factory in Norwich UK. How it ended up in Australia is still unknown, but Paul and Lyn Rudnev of Canberra were its owners in the early 80’s and Paul being the typical 40 year old sports car enthusiast probably was driving it within an inch of it’s life when a conrod let go and did serious damage to the block. Paul set about procuring another engine and thus the current Sprint engine with its twin 40 mm Webers ended up being found and has been thoroughly overhauled, as has the original touring gearbox and diff, along with all suspension rubbers being re-placed. At this time Paul decided to do a total restoration and

set about removing every part that was not welded or glued/glassed into place, including all paint off the entire body and chassis. The rolling chassis was partly completed over the years but by this time 25 or more years had elapsed and Paul decid-ed to sell the car as he purchased another one when this one was being dismantled. Carol’s brother told us about the car being available in August 2010

and we spent some weeks deciding if this was the project I needed to replace the Harley that we sold a few months earlier. Decision to purchase the Elan was made and a price agreed upon and while Carol was playing tennis at Merimbula in October 2010 I drove on to Canberra and returned later that day with a trailer load of stuff mostly in large plastic tubs apart from the bare vehicle which was temporarily reattached to the chassis. The next few weeks were spent with all the tubs emptied on the garage floor and the jig saw puzzle slowly coming together. It was certainly different to the 4 T Fords I had built over the previous 30 years. Repairing the myriad of fine cracks in the gel coat was the hardest part as they were so hard to find but so important to be fixed or they would show through the final paint finish ( 2-pak Lotus Yellow). The day the engine was first started was also a big moment and gave me the momentum to move forward quickly and get to drive this rare classic vehicle, which came in April 2012. I did have to remove the body a few months after getting it on the road due to a problem with the front shocks and the clutch plate which I replaced to eliminate clutch shudder at start off. I finished it in April 2012 and thoroughly enjoy driving it. by Ian Mallows

The 2 Elans shown in the photo are our 1969 S4, and Carol's brother Colin's 1964 S2. We recently did a trip together over the Mts through Falls Creek and along the Omeo hwy to Mitta Mitta and back through Beechworth to Wangaratta and Colin wrote an article but it is 4 pages long and really aimed at sports cars or motor bike riders enjoyment

Our three car convoy left the Club at 9.20am for the new venue for this year’s Federation Picnic, the National Steam Centre at Scoresby. Joining us at Drouin were Barry and Wendy Hitchins and Norm Baberton. We just missed Rob and Val Marshal but with the use of their Tom Tom they found the venue and weren’t far behind us. I will never know why a fan-tastic place like this has never been known to me before, especially since I worked only a few kilometers from it for many years. The trip to the Centre was on the Freeway for a fair bit and our speed of 80 kms/hr did seem to worry some drivers. However, we all arrived safety; although next time, if in convoy, I would take a better route. Norm Baberton worked at the site when the MMBW were constructing the main sewer tunnel to Crib Point and Norm was able to give us a feeling of what life was like during that time. The site has been significantly changed by the Melbourne Centre Steam Traction Engine Club. Now, it is a great venue with something for everybody. We purchased a book called ‘A Guide to the National Steam Centre’ for a very reasonable price. Reading the first couple of pages you get an understanding of the enormous task it was for the club when it decided to move from their temporary home in a paddock in Wantirna to the current site back in 1988. Since then the collection has expanded from Traction Engines to include a wide variety of steam and internal com-bustion engines with a Stationary Steam Museum and a Diesel Museum. The Dandy Valley Club had organized everything to enable us all to enjoy the venue. There was very tasty food for sale if you didn’t take a picnic and many Historic Cars, trucks, tractors and caravans to enjoy. We were all amazed at the volume of interesting steam engines, equipment, machinery, scale models, a steam Rolls Royce aircraft engine, a stream driven Drop Forge, huge (working) traction engines and the Tug Boat power plant. All this and more were displayed in I think about eight huge sheds. And if you wanted you could take a country train ride in the city, past ducks in the lake and cows in the field, as you circled the grounds on the 12 inch gauge railway. The weather was great and we sat with our cars enjoying lunch by the lake and listening to a drag line bucket filling a heritage tuck with overburden and a D9 bull dozer spreading it out. What great noises and smells. There must have been at least fifty free door raffle prizes drawn and all great value. Some of our members left a little early forgetting to give their raffle tickets to those remaining for collection of prizes should they have won. There were also many trophies awarded as in other years. The major trophy prize was awarded to the Ferguson Tractor Display. Those attending were:

Norm Baberton Toyota Corolla 1987

Colin and Shirley Higman Mazda MX 5

Wally and Maureen Buckland FC Holden Station Sedan

Maurie Girard and Mac Goodbody Modern

Barry and Wendy Hitchins Mercedes SL1983

Rob and Val Marshal Modern

Have a family reunion to attend at Mt. Buller Alpine Village at the weekend. Keep watching the weather forecast during the week. If it is wet we will take our Suzuki 4wd. Friday will have clearing showers and Saturday, Sunday looks ok, so Herbie the ‘67 VW Beetle gets the nod. Fully loaded, there is no room for the skis ( ha ha !) We head off from Morwell around 11am and turn off up Army Rd at Pakenham then on to Healesville (Hello Bill S!) up through Cockatoo, Woori Yallock, Healesville, Buxton, Taggerty, Alexandra and Mansfield. Road damp (as always) on the Black Spur. Petrol top up at Healesville (11litres) From Mansfield the road climbs upwards, the last 15 to 20 Kilometres straight upwards in a succession of 25, 35 and 45 k corners, all second and third gear work for Herbie. Arrive at Mt Buller about 4:45 pm. Find the Chalet after doing a couple of blockies.

Sunny Saturday, and the forecast was for more of the same on Sunday, but woke to a torrential downpour. Had been raining through the night, but never heard it. ( don’t know why?) Should have realised the mountains have their own weather systems. Herbie loaded up we say our goodbyes and head gingerly in the rain down the mountainside. Plenty of leaf matter and tree bark on the wet road make it an interesting exercise. Luckily there is no one behind pushing us along. ( that was later on the Black Spur) so we take our time. Road opens up before Mansfield and starts to dry out. Stops at Alexandra ( can’t buy a pie or pastie on Sunday!) and Healesville and we ‘re on the home stretch down C411 to Pakenham and the freeway where everyone can pass Herbie with out filling the rear-view mirror and making my blood pressure rise. Herbie had a big weekend ( and so did we) travelling approximately 650kms loaded to the gunwales and still returning 35MPG in the old money. Now for a wash, grease and oil change and a little bit of R and R in the shed near Port Albert. (Herbie that is!) OLD CARS (and Motorbikes) don’t ya just love em? Peter Randal

Paddy and Mick were both laid off, so they went to the unemployment office. When asked his occupation, Paddy answered, 'Knicker Stitcher.. I sew da elastic onto ladies' knickers and thongs..' The clerk looked up Knicker Stitcher on his computer and, finding it classified as unskilled labour, he gave him £80 a week unemploy-ment pay. Mick was next in and when asked his occupa-tion replied, 'Diesel Fitter.' Since a diesel fitter was a skilled job, the clerk gave Mick £160 a week. When Paddy found out he was furious.. He stormed back into the office to find out why his friend and co-worker was collecting dou-ble his pay. The clerk explained, 'Knicker Stitchers are un-skilled labour and Diesel Fitters are skilled la-bour.' 'What skill?' yelled Paddy. 'I sew da elastic on da knickers and thongs, then Mick puts 'em over his head and says: 'Yep, diesel fitter.

Club Ride 29th April 2014 By Neville Christie

On a warm but overcast morning six of us set off from the club rooms for a days riding. I had my 1948 Indian Chief out for its first club ride. We headed off for Dar-num, then to Yarragon and into the hills to Childers. From Childers we pressed on to Mirboo North and stopped for a bite to eat and a cup of coffee at the Bakery. We then rode down to Boolarra and then to Yinnar. We turned onto the Thorpdale road, over to Narracan, along Rogers road with its greats views out over Latrobe Valley and down into Trafalgar for a fuel stop. We then headed off to Yarragon and we ran into the rain. It was then onto Shady Creek, we turned into Old Sale Road and then into Mizpah Settlement Road. As I was coming down the last hill and about to accelerate up the hill going into Neerim South the Chief engine died. I thought it may have been a fuel problem so changed over tanks, but the motor wouldn’t fire up. I pressed the horn button and nothing happened. Checked the fuse that was ok. It was then I realised the battery had died. We had a bit of a pow wow as what we were going to do and Jim Micah suggested as we near the town, he would go there and see if he could buy a Dolphin Torch battery. Ten minutes later Jim was back with a battery and I taped it onto the pack rack on the Indian, wired it up and with a couple of kicks and she fired up. We then rode up to Neerim South and stopped for a late lunch. During lunch we had another pow wow and we decided to end the ride as it was raining a fair bit and there was some doubt about how long the Dolphin Battery would last. Jim and I said our goodbyes and headed off to Warragul so I could get new battery. I got a new battery at the Battery shop in Mavis Street, the terminals were different to the old battery, but the owner of the 4x4 shop in Queen Street was there and he offered to make up some terminals if we cared to go over to his shop. We did, he made up the terminals at no charge, (thanks mate if you get to read this, I didn’t get your name). I fitted the battery and the engine fired up first kick. I then rode back home with no more problems. Riders for the day were Rex and Faye Bastin, Honda Andrew O’Sullivan, BMW Ian Troughton, Royal Enfield Jim Micah, Indian Neville Christie, Indian
