JEFF CHILDRESSHEAD COACH
Jeff Childress returned to Catawba in 2004 to assume the duties
of Director of Tennis, which includes coaching both the men’s and
women’s intercollegiate teams. He also serves as Assistant Ath-
letic Director. Childress previously coached men’s tennis at
Catawba from 1991-98. During those seven years, Catawba com-
piled a 78-70 record and earned two trips to the NCAA II regional
tournaments, hosting the event in1996. He took over a depleted
squad and after two rebuilding seasons, Catawba posted a 70-40
record over the final five years, including a 26-5 mark in 1998.
Childress left Catawba in 1998 to become the Director of Athletics at Pfeiffer University,
where he served in that capacity through 2003. In his last year at Pfeiffer, he served as
men’s tennis coach and Sports Information Director.
Childress played tennis for four years at Pfeiffer University from 1985-1989. He served as
the graduate aSsistant for the men and women's tennis teams at East Carolina University
from 1990-1991. Childress received his MA.Ed from East Carolina in 1995.
In December of 2003, Childress was awarded the USTA's Southern Section Community
Service Award. Childress is a USTPA certified teaching tennis professional and also is the
Director of the Salisbury City Park Tennis program. Childress served as the South Atlantic
Committee Chair for men's tennis, served on the NCAA II East Regional committee, served
as the CVAC Athletic Director liaison for men and women's tennis and served as the
Catawba College Tennis Camp Director for seven years. In the last five years, Childress has
won both the Rowan County and Stanly County singles titles and is a lifetime member of the
USTA. Childress has completed two marathons and also enjoys swimming, golf, and biking.
Childress is married to Dr. Donna Childress, who is employed at Rowan Diagnostics. They
have three children, Michael Thomas (13), Benjamin (9) and Lauren (5). The Childress family
resides in Salisbury.

JOHNSON TENNIS CENTER
The Catawba Tennis Center has been home to the Catawba Indians since 1987. It was
named in honor of Allen Johnson, Jr. Johnson was a business leader and former All-America
athlete. The complex is comprised of six courts, which is divided into three two-court sec-
tions, and is lighted for night play.
The courts have served as site of several conference championships during the South At-
lantic Conference Spring Sports Festival in the 1990s. It also serves as a site for high school
conference and regional championships.
2012 AT CATAWBA:
Had a 9-7 record in singles … was 7-7 at #6 and 2-0 at
the #5 position … added a doubles win at both the #2
and #3 slots …
2011 AT CATAWBA:
Went 4-3 in singles during her first season, playing
mainly at #6 … partnered with Maggie McKee and Can-
dace Hall in doubles at the third spot, going 3-2
HIGH SCHOOL:
Was a three-time all-conference and all-county selection
at East Rowan High School … twice qualified for the
state tournament and helped the Mustangs to a confer-
ence title in 2007
PERSONAL:
Born Hannah Madeline Kovach on Aug. 14, 1991 in Sal-
isbury, NC … daughter of Melissa Kovach … biology
major with a very good 3.18 GPA.
Member of SAC Honor Roll ... will play only in the Fall of the
2012-13 season, graduating in December.
2012 AT CATAWBA:
Went 10-12 overall in singles … had a 2-0 record at #2, but
mainly played at #3 where she went 8-12 … two of her wins
came in league play … teamed with Sloan Kessler for six wins
at the #1 double flight …
2011 AT CATAWBA:
Saw most of her action at #3 singles, posting an 11-14 mark …
was 15-7 in doubles with five different partners, playing mostly
at the third slot … went 6-3 in SAC doubles matches …
2010 AT CATAWBA:
Played #5 singles as a freshman and posted a 15-11 mark …
went 4-3 in league matches … was 6-13 at #3 doubles, playing
mostly with Jennifer Dameron …
HIGH SCHOOL:
Three-time all-conference selection at Mt. Airy High School …
was 1A Western Regional Champion and State runner-up as a
senior … made State finals as a junior … was also an all-con-
ference performer in basketball and track for the Bears … fin-
ished fifth at the State Meet in the 1500 …

2012 AT CATAWBA:
One of only three players to have winning singles mark,
posting a 7-3 record ... went 3-2 in league play … split
time at the #5 and #6 spots with a 4-1 mark at #6 …had

Competed against Winston Salem State at #6 singles,
winning 6-0, 6-3 … won all three doubles matches she

overall … went 5-11 at #2 and was 1-4 at the top flight …

2011 AT CATAWBA:
Had a stellar freshman year, going 17-5 in singles … per-
formance was best for 12th in school history for most
wins in a season … played mainly at the fifth spot, finish-
ing 12-2, but also saw time at #4 and was 4-1 … went 6-3
in league matches … was 12-11 in doubles, playing
mostly at #2, including an 11-7 mark with Steffi Cook …

Moved into the #1 spot as a freshman ... had a 9-14
overall record with three SAC wins … six of her wins
came at the top flight, while she was 3-2 at #2 … also
played #1 doubles, collecting six wins …

Played #1 singles at LaCrosse Aquinas all four years,
compiling an overall mark of 76-22 at the top spot …
four-year all-conference selection as well as a four-year
academic all-conference selection … was the MVC
Champion at #3 singles as a sophomore … WIAA Sec-

ual state tournament twice … one of 16 girls in the state
