We welcome you to another season of Hillcat softball, which promises to build upon the excellence we've seen in previous years.

The development of our athletic programs mirrors the exciting changes that have occurred throughout the university with a distinguishedlist of recent milestones that includes:

• Developing as Oklahoma’s fastest growing regional university during the past decade while still maintaining the personalized academic attention that’s become the university's hallmark;

• Adding new academic programs to meet the needs of Oklahoma’s business and industry, including our first master’s degree program starting in fall 2014;

• Constructing two student apartment communities and a dining hall (to open in fall 2014) that serve the Tulsa metropolitan area’s only residential, public university;

• Expanding and remodeling academic facilities to provide students with up-to-date academic resources; and• Developing strong ties with the communities we serve in order to fulfill our mission of education and service.

RSU’s rapid growth also extends to our intercollegiate athletics, which are a relatively new addition after being reintroduced to campus in 2005. In only a few short years,our Hillcat teams have become a vital component of the university’s DNA providing an infectious campus spirit and a strong connection to the community. The universityand our students have invested in athletic facilities, including the new baseball/softball complex, Bushyhead Fieldhouse renovations, expansion and turf installation atSoldier Field and construction of soccer and cross country facilities on campus.

We appreciate our entire student body for their support of these campus initiatives, including the student fees that funded the recently completed $4 million renovationsof the soccer facilities and baseball/softball complex. Their support signals a strong vote of confidence in our athletic programs, but also represents their investment inthe quality of life at Rogers State.

The Hillcats are continuing our affilation with the Heartland Conference in the NCAA Division II. We have appreciated the high priority these two organizations haveplaced on promoting healthy values, developing strong character traits, and encouraging academic achievement among all student-athletes. These are core values forRSU’s programs, and we work daily to impress them upon our student-athletes. We appreciate your interest in RSU athletics, and we look forward to another great seasonon the diamond.

While the Hillcats may be without seven seniors from last year'steam that posted a 40-19 record, coming one win shy of theNational Championship final site, there is a sense of excitementemanating through the program after reaching the NAIAOpening Round championship game.

"We have a strong, core group returning from last yearwhen we made a great run through the NAIA," saidCope, who was promoted to the helm last April afterspending the previous five seasons as an assistantcoach with RSU. "Despite losing seven seniors,I think that having our main group back atkey positions should help us thisseason."

From that core group mentionedby Coach Cope, three outfieldersare back for their seniors seasonswith the Hillcats bringing a wealth ofexperience, led by 2013 NAIA First-Team All-America selection CandaceMonigold. The Broken Arrow, Okla., nativebecame the first RSU student-athlete to earn First-Team All-America honors after starting 56 of 57games a year ago leading the team in nearly everyoffensive category. This included three single-season records with 77 hits, a .480 on-basepercentage, and a .433 batting average.

"Candace can continue her success fromlast season and put up even betternumbers," said Cope. "She is a big-timestick in our lineup and has tremendouspower while hitting to all sides of thefield. She does a great job incenterfield as well and holds downthe outfield for us."

Returning to a familiar spot in leftfield is Jackie Flores (San Elizario,Texas), who played 35 games inher first season at RSU in 2013,while Katie Ellington will take the reins inright field after getting the starting nod in 17 of 45 games playeda year ago.

"Jackie is very quick, fast, and a great defensive player. She hasa great arm and an even better work ethic. She will be reallygood for us," added Cope. "Katie has a cannon for an arm andgood range. She is someone we converted to be a left-handedslapper and she has shown great improvement on the offensiveend. I can't wait to see what she will add to our lineup with her

speed."

The Hillcats have only onepitcher on the roster withcollegiate experience, andshe is coming off knee

surgery. That fact does notdeter Coach Cope as senior

Yolanda Rios (Fullerton, Calif.)showed she is more than capable of

being the team's go-to pitcher despitelimited action last season where she posted a

1.31 earned run average in 58.2 inningspitched. Rios threw more than 400 innings in two

seasons at Midland Junior College winning 47ballgames before transferring to RSU at the start of

2013.

"Yolanda is a huge key for us and will be our day-to-daystarting pitcher," stated Cope. "We structure our defensearound her and her pitching capabilities. She is ready togo after working very hard with the RSU athletic trainingstaff rehabbing her knee following ACL surgery."

The other pitchers on the Hillcat staff are two ofonly three players that made the jump to RogersState straight from high school in BrooklyneHarbert (Fountain, Colo.) and MikaylaMcGoldrick (Omaha, Ark.).

"Brooklyne and Mikayla come in asfreshmen with a lot of potential and will

help Yolanda with the pitchingduties," added Cope. "They both

still have a good deal to learnbut I am confident they will do

so quickly."

Back to her spot at second base, Cailin Simpson (Riverside,Calif.) was named to the Sooner Athletic Conference Second-Team All-Conference squad in 2013 hitting .346, driving in 26runs, and scoring 35 times. Simpson made 51 starts a year agoin her first season in a Hillcat uniform.

"Cailin had a great defensive season for us last year. She workshard and has a great attitude which is infectious for the rest ofthe team," explained Cope of the junior.

Senior Taran Threet (Wellston, Okla.) is the only current playerwho has been at RSU all four years and will open 2014 at thirdbase while also seeing action at first base. Threet is one of fourHillcats that played all 57 games last season batting .250 withfour home runs and 24 runs scored.

"Taran is a great contact hitter and rarely strikes out. She is oneof the hardest working players on the team and has been a keystarter for us the last three seasons," stated Cope of the versatilesenior, who has made 165 career starts for RSU.

In her second season on the Hill, senior Toni Shurtliff (Hesperia,Calif.) is slated to cover first-base duties following a 2013campaign where she started 38 games.

"Toni will be a big part of what we do this season and adds a lotof speed to the bases," said Cope. "She is a great contact hitterand will make some great plays both offensively and defensively."Carley Conley (Paris, Texas) is one of four transfers to the RSUlineup and the junior is coming off an impressive 2013 at

u RSU will complete its inaugural season in the Heartland Conference in 2014.

Independence Community College where she was namedNJCAA First-Team All-American for the Lady Pirates. Conley willhelp anchor the middle infield while providing another quality batas she hit .513 in 57 games with 14 home runs and 67 RBIs asa sophomore.

"Carley is going to be our everyday shortstop after coming overfrom a great program where she got experience at a high level,"added Cope. "She can hit, and hit with power, and will be a greatdefensive player for us."

A former dual-sport athlete for the Hillcats having previouslyplayed on the women's basketball team, Kelby Fritz (Vinita,Okla.) will utilize her athleticism to play a variety of positions forthe Softball Cats as a senior in 2014 after making oneappearance a season ago.

"Kelby can play middle infield as well as outfield and will adddepth to our lineup," said Cope. "She has a quickness to herthat we can use on the base paths and will be a weaponoffensively."

Junior Kassie Brugmann (Burkburnett, Texas) makes thetransition to RSU from Vernon College providing depth to thecorner infield positions and can step behind the plate as needed."Kassie played at a high level with the Chaparrals and comes tous as a versatile player," declared Cope.

A pair of transfers will share the majority of catching duties withjunior Makenzie Kirk (Bixby, Okla.) opening the season as the

starter while incoming sophomore Jamie Kowalick (Petrolia,Texas) continues to learn the defensive system after entering theprogram at semester from Independence Community College.

"Makenzie is someone I look to be a leader on the field even asa newcomer to the program," explained Cope of the formerNorthern Oklahoma College standout. "She is a vocal player inthe field and can hit really well, whether with power or for contact.Jamie came in at semester and is still learning our system butshe will be a great addition once she gets more exposure. Sheblocks a lot of balls and does not allow many to get past her."

While the roster may feature 11 of 14 players with prior collegiateexperience, Coach Cope knows that bringing in transfer playersis a major benefit to the program.

"One of the reasons I recruit junior-college transfers is that theybring in experience, whether that's in the classroom or in games,you know what you are getting with a player, and there are notmany surprises," explained Cope. "They all have different playingbackgrounds with top-tier teams and they can bring it alltogether here and buy into the system."

One of the main focuses for Coach Cope in her first seasondirecting the Hillcats is defense and she has made sure everyoneon the team knows that is the top priority heading into theseason.

"Defense is a huge component to what we do," said Cope. "Wereturn a lot of players, especially in the outfield and I will besurprised if many balls drop. Having a strong upperclassmendefense, we will rely on them heavily, and we can set them upto our different pitching styles."

RSU will take the experience it gained from playing in the NAIA'sSooner Athletic Conference for seven years and enter a newchapter in the program's history with its first look at the NCAA'sDivision II Heartland Conference.

"Everything is going to be new for us this year other than playingtwo of the former SAC schools in Lubbock Christian andOklahoma Christian," added Cope. "There will be a smalllearning curve to seeing the different styles of the coaches andteams we play. The three schools that are joining the HeartlandConference will make it a better, tougher conference altogether.We are excited about the new opportunity."

With the Hillcats joining the Heartland Conference amidst thetransition to NCAA Division II, the Softball Cats will have to playfor something other than a chance at postseason play.

"Even though we are not postseason eligible, these next threeyears are crucial to our program and laying the foundation tohave success in the future as a member of the NCAA,"concluded Cope.

u Makenzie Kirk will split time between third base and catcher.

The Heartland Conference is an NCAA Division II conference, founded in 1999, that currently consists of 12 schools, seven fromTexas, three from Oklahoma, and one each from Arkansas and Kansas. The schools comprising the Heartland Conferencestretch from as far north as Wichita, Kan., as far east as Fort Smith, Ark., as far south as Laredo, Texas, and as far west asGoodwell, Okla. The Conference stretches over a distance of 1,050 miles north to south and 610 east to west.

The schools that are in the Heartland Conference include founding members St. Edward's University (Austin, Texas), and St.Mary’s University (San Antonio, Texas), and expansion members Dallas Baptist University (Dallas, Texas) in 2002 and again in2004, Oklahoma Panhandle State University (Goodwell, Oklahoma) in 2002, and Newman University (Wichita, Kansas), TexasA&M International University (Laredo, Texas) and The University of Texas of the Permian Basin (Odessa, Texas) in 2006, theUniversity of Arkansas-Fort Smith (2009), McMurry University and Oklahoma Christian University in 2012, and Rogers State andLubbock Christian in 2013.

Among the many accomplishments of these institutions are national championships in baseball, golf, swimming, basketball,softball, and nationally ranked teams in all sports. The strength of the student-athlete concept is well supported by the manyNCAA scholar-athletes in each school, the high cumulative GPA of the student-athletes in each school, and the high number ofstudent-athletes who graduate from each institution in the Heartland.

The Heartland Conference is the newest of the NCAA Division II conferences. At the present time, there are 24 conferences inNCAA Division II, totaling almost 300 institutions in full or provisional status across the nation.

Members of NCAA Division II believe that a well-conducted intercollegiate athletics program, based on sound educationalprinciples and practices, is a proper part of the educational mission of a university or college and that the educational welfare ofthe participating student-athlete is of primary concern.

ABOUT THE HEARTLAND CONFERENCE

41

Members of NCAA Division II support the following principles in the belief that these objectives assist in defining the division andthe possible differences between it and other divisions of the Association. This statement shall serve as a guide for the preparationof legislation by the division and for planning and implementation of programs by institutions and conferences. A member ofDivision II:

u Believes in promoting the academic success of its student-athletes, measured in part by an institution's student-athletes graduating at least at the same rate as the institution's student body;

u Believes that participation in intercollegiate athletics benefits the educational experience of its student-athletes and the entire campus community;

u Believes in offering opportunities for intercollegiate athletics participation consistent with the institution's mission and philosophy;

u Believes in preparing student-athletes to be good citizens, leaders and contributors in their communities;

u Believes in striving for equitable participation and competitive excellence, encouraging sportsmanship and ethical conduct, enhancing diversity and developing positive societal attitudes in all of its athletics endeavors;

u Believes in scheduling the majority of its athletics competition with other members of Division II, insofar as regional qualification, geographical location and traditional or conference scheduling patterns permit;

u Recognizes the need to "balance" the role of the athletics program to serve both the campus (participants, student body, faculty-staff) and the general public (community, area, state);

u Believes in offering opportunity for participation in intercollegiate athletics by awarding athletically related financial aid to its student-athletes;

u Believes that institutional control is a fundamental principle that supports the educational mission of a Division II institution and assumes presidential involvement and commitment. All funds supporting athletics should be controlled by the institution. The emphasis for an athletics department should be to operate within an institutionally approved budget, and compliance with and self-enforcement of NCAA regulations is an expectation of membership; and

u Believes that all members of Division II should commit themselves to this philosophy and to the regulations and programs of Division II.

What Is A Hillcat?The university’s official mascot, the “Hillcat,” is a unique blue and redanimal that serves as a source of campus pride and provides a visualidentity for the university’s Athletic, Student Activities, and otherschool spirit programs. Fear the ClawNot long after Hillcat men’s and women’s basketball was intro-duced at RSU, the home court at the Claremore Expo Centerquickly gained a reputation as a formidable venue for oppo-nents.

As a member of the Hillcat team aligns himself or herself on thefree throw line, the crowd at the Expo Center extends one armskyward and makes the sign of the claw with their fists.

If the shot falls successfully, arms descend in the manner ofthe scratch of a ferocious wild cat.

As members of an opposing team prepare to shoot a freethrow, the rowdy RSU student section has been known tointimidate the shooter. Depending on the shooter’s fortitude,sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t!

RSU HILLCAT TRADITIONS

u The Hillcat tradition of “Fear the Claw” began seven years ago and has spread throughout, the student body.

Fight SongHillcats of RSUStanding tall in Red and BlueWe will prevailWe refuse to failBecause our spirit's greatWe wear our colors proudlyOn our way to victoryGo Rogers State!!!

Lyrics by Yvonne Pace

Music by Clarence Woods/arr. Weller

Lift the chorus, speed it onwardFor the Red and Blue,Hail to thee our alma materHail to R-S-U!
