Departmen t of Agriculture aw arded $4.2 millionto 18 small en terprises to develop innovative products andrenewable energy from woody biomass from national forests.Altbougb many recipients are forest products companies, funds were also awarded to tbe Cawaco Resource Conserva-tion & Development Council which will co-fire biomass withcoal; Big Valley Power, a biomass power plant in Redding,California; the Montana Community Development Corp.,wbicb bas been experimen ting witb usin g wood waste fromlogging operations to fuel a boiler at a paper mill; Mt. TaylorMacbine in New Mexico that makes fuel for pellet stoves;and tbe town of Red River, NM whicb plans to ship woodchips from forest thinning to a biomass power plant. Accord-ing to tbe USDA, tbe gran t program improves forest bealtband reduces wildfires by removing built-up fuel ba zard s.STEEL CAN RECYCLING RATE INCREASEDTO 6 3PERCENT I NU .S . FO R 2 0 0 5According to tbe Steel Recycling Institute, recovery ratefor steel cans jumped to 63 percent in 2005 an otber in-crease from tbe previous year's record-setting rate of 61.7percent. Nearly 1.4 million tons were recycled back into var-ious steel products "a solid demonstration tba t A mericansunderstand tbat they can become part ofthe solution," saysBill Heenan, Institute president.T E C H N O L O G I E S E X A M I N E DF O R R E M O V I N G I M P U R I T I E S F R O M B I O G A SBiogas is generated by biodigesters at the city of Ed-monton, Alberta's Gold Bar Wastewater Treatment Plant,as biosolids are broken down. While some biogas currentlyfuels hoilers, contam inants in tbe gas create scaling prob-lems with existing equipment. "At certain times oftheyear, we could potentially use up to twice as much ofthehiogas as we now do," says Darryl Seebagel, supervisor ofthe Wastewater R esearcb and Training Center. Marketvalue of tbe gas is "probably over a million dollars a year."Officials at the city, the Edmonton Waste ManagementCenter of Excellence, and Alberta Research Council areexamining ways to remove hydrogen sulfide, siloxanes, carbon dioxide and otber impurities from the hiogas.Tbe cleaning project could also bave otber benefits, saysSeebagel. "If we did clean it up, our boilers would runmore efficiently. There would be far less maintenance, andtbere would be options of using technology sucb as micro-turbines to create clean renewable energy onsite."BI O DI ESEL F UEL AND W I ND PO W ERT E A M U P I N AURI TESTTbe Agricultural Utilization Research Institute (AURI)is pairing two renewable energy sources -wind andbiodiese to produce electricity even wben tbe wind isn'tblowing. Tbe demonstration project links seven wind tur-bines with a 2,800 hp diesel engine fueled by 100 percentbiodiesel. The goal is to gua rantee two megaw atts of re-newable electricity. Cogeneration would also provide soy-
