Die skrander Mar-Louise is ’n graad nege leerling te Lydenburg Hoërskool en doen al modelwerk vir die afgelope drie jaar. Mar-Louise het in April 2015 deelgeneem aan die Suid-Afrikaanse kampioenskappe, waar sy drie goue medaljes verwerf het en Springbokspan behaal om te kwalifiseer vir Wêreldkampioenskappe. Mar-Louise het skoonskip gemaak met al die medaljes wat sy ingeryg het. Goud vir “Runway Casual”, “Swimwear”, finale rondte en silwer vir formele drag. Mar-Louise het ook die industriële medalje van agente ontvang wat beteken as jy daar woonagtig is, sal agente met jou werk. Asof dit nie genoeg is nie het sy ook twee “Overall” trofees gekry waarvan een vir “swimwear” en een vir “runway casual” (beste model vir ouderdomsgroep van 13 -15 jaar). 200 Dogters het meegeding in verskeie kategorieë en Mar-Louise het ons dorp se naam hoog gehou. Die wêreldberoemde fotograaf Eugene Biscardi het vir Mar-Louise genooi om as fotografiese model vir Vogue Models in Milan te gaan werk maar sy het besluit om eers te fokus op haar skoolloopbaan. DIE Valke wat hier op Lydenburg op ’n klomp polisiebeamptes van die honde eenheid toegeslaan het, was vir elke inwoner ’n groot skok. Daar is natuurlik die wat lekkerkry en sê alweer die polisie. Maar daardie veralgemening is soos rassisme. Daar is uitsonderings. Polisiebeamptes wat hulle werk na die beste van hulle vermoeëns doen. Die probleem is ’n gedemotiveerde mag wat met gebrekkige hulpmiddels moet werk. Waar

inmenging so erg is dat as jy ’n misdadiger vang, jy eers moet vasstel wat sy politieke affiliasie is en wie sy regeringspelle is, voordat jy arresteer. Jy mag hom net roer as hy geen politieke konneksies het nie en dan vat die linkse pers jou. Jy werk onder ’n kommisaris wat na enkele maande vir haarself ’n 10-jaar langdiensmedalje toegeken het en “clueless” is. Jy werk onder bevelvoerders wat vroeër skoonmakers was en nou kolonelle is. Jou kollegas rand mense aan, sleep mense agter voertuie en teister die publiek. Hoe bly jy gemotiveerd en hoe hou jy jou hande skoon? Deur bloot niks te doen nie en veral nie golwe te

maak nie. Soos so baie van my voormalige kollegas in die staatsdiens, hou jy jou bek en sien niks ter wille van oorlewing. Hoeveel fluitjieblasers ken jy wat nog hulle werk het? Hoeveel promosies vind op meriete plaas?Hierdie is ’n kanker wat so wyd en so diep versprei het dat nie eers ’n ander politieke regering dit sal regkry nie. Op die oog af is die oplossing maklik. “Fire” die hele spul, begin met ’n skoon vel papier en stel die aan onder ’n nuwe diensbedeling, met geverifieerde kwalifikasies, lang ervaring en ’n skoon, bewese prestasierekord. Begin bo by die kop. Maklik, maar jy gaan nie regkom nie. Tussen die President, die vakunies en arbeidswetgewing het jy ’n beter kans om die duiwel te bekeer en in die hemel te kry. Dit is waarom gemeenskappe die reg in eie hande begin neem.

Mrs Inger Chester-Browne writes:I was fortunate to find this beautiful West African chief throne in a shop in Lydenburg. This throne is made from hardwood, copper strips and tack. The Chokwe chairs are among the few African objects not carved from a single piece of wood, but are instead assembled i n p a r t s . T h e backrest and sitting of the throne are decorated with a face representing the Chokwe chief. The Chokwe are well known for art objects including ornately carved stools and chairs used as thrones. The Chokwe tribe are an ethnic group located primarily in Central Africa.

thDuring the 17 century, many Chokwe were introduced to chairs by Portuguese traders, and they adopted the foreign style for their thrones. The chiefs throne represents the chief's right to rule, his prominence and power, and the central role he plays in the Chokwe society. The sculptured thrones from the court are true works of art and their function is to

enforce the authority of the person sitting in the chair. Each village chief owns a chair or stool. The figurative elements represent the relationship between the worlds of the ancestors. The Chokwe chief throne may be of Angolan origin and seems to be an original piece.

FORD have to agree that their first Everest SUV was not a huge success. Its ice cream-like interior plastics were terribly dull and its leaf spring rear suspension simply couldn’t match the independent rear set-ups of its competitors, both in terms of ride comfort and cornering ability. But the new Ford Everest looks to raise the segment bar when it arrives on local shores in September this year, with much improved build quality, a bold new design, a swathe of advanced technology systems, impressive offroad and onroad capability, not to mention a premium interior with seating for up to seven passengers. According to Ford Asia Pacific’s exterior design manager, Dave Dewitt, 'We didn’t want people seeing the new Everest as just another bakkie-based SUV and so the exterior design was intentionally different. We believe this vehicle will redefine the segment. Our biggest challenge with the design was to create a vehicle that had appeal across the 180 markets in which it will be sold. We had to balance both the rugged and premium aspects of its design.As the Everest will be available in both rear-wheel drive and four-wheel drive variants, the engineers opted for the Ranger’s existing ladder-frame chassis, in order to not compromise its torsional strength over challenging terrain. The big

improvement to its rear suspension design is the new independent Watt’s linkage that will provide a more comfortable, stable ride as well as offer agile, predictable handling on the road.The newcomer’s off-road credentials are bolstered by an intelligent four-wheel drive system, an active transfer case with Torque on Demand, Terrain Management System, and best-in-class ground clearance of 225mm and water-wading capability to 800mm. Like Land Rover’s Terrain Response system before it, Ford’s system offers drivers four preset settings – Normal, Snow/Gravel/Grass, Sand and Rock– that variously alter the vehicle’s throttle response, transmission, four-wheel drive system and traction control. For extreme off-road terrain, drivers can also manually lock the transfer case in low-range 4WD for increased control.The car-like interior is another leap forward and offers both a premium feel and excellent practicality with a first-in-class powered tailgate, 30 stowage spaces, multiple power outlets and flexible fold-flat second and third-row seating (the third electrically) – a significant selling point over its rivals. Like the new Ranger and the Kuga before it, Ford have also included the latest generation of their in-car connectivity solution, SYNC 2, which features voice commands, an eight-inch touchscreen and 10-speaker sound system with an integrated subwoofer. Other contemporary technologies include Curve Control, designed to help drivers maintain control when approaching corners too quickly, and Blind Spot Information System (BLIS) with Cross Traffic Alert, which informs drivers when there is a vehicle in their blind spot while driving or when preparing to reverse

out of parking spots.Under the hood, the Everest is offered with a choice of the Ranger’s two diesel engines (3.2-litre five-cylinder TDCi and 2.2-litre four-cylinder TDCi), mated to either six-speed automatic or manual transmissions. Other standard technical highlights include Roll Stability Control, ESP, Active Park Assist and Active Noise Cancellation which uses three microphones inside the cabin to detect and measure sound. A control module instantaneously generates opposing sound waves, which are then fed through the Everest’s audio system to cancel out unwanted noise. THE PHILOSOPHER:Accepts other drivers' mistakes as 'human error' and controls frustration by trying to find rational excuses for their poor driving.THE AVOIDER:Treats offending drivers impersonally, equating them with other road hazards such as potholes and non-functional traffic lights.THE ESCAPEE:Avoids interaction with other drivers by listening to music or talking on the phone driving.
