ENDERS vir die besighede in Pelgrimsrus open weer op 11 Mei. Dan sal die eienaars Tvan die huidige besighede weer moet

meeding om hul winkels en restaurante te behou. Die tenderskok het sowat vier jaar gelede die besigheidseienaars getref.Hulle kon volgens die tenderproses binne dertig dae hul besighede verloor. Die Departement van Openbare Werke gaan Pelgr imsrus op 29 Apri l besoek om die besigheidseienaars se opinies en versoeke aan te hoor. Hulle sal ook dan presies verduidelik hoe die tenderproses gaan werk. Dit is al van te vore uitgestel. Die tenders word volgens ’n struktuurplan deur ’n tenderpaneel hanteer. Die paneel sal besluit oor die

tenders.

Thuli Madonsela het Openbarewerke geroskam in 2012 en gesê die tenderproses moet volgens die grondwet plaasvind en besighede moet almal ’n redelike tyd ontvang om hul dokumente in te handig, teen billike pryse. Die Vryheidsfront Plus was in 2012 een van die partye wat Adv. Madonsela se hulp ingeroep het om die tenderproses te ondersoek. Daar is steeds baie kontroversie oor Pelgrimsrus, soveel so dat almal wil wag en kyk voor hulle te veel sê. Inwoners is dit egter eens dat die tenderproses nie ’n demper sal plaas op hul passie vir Pelgrims nie.

THE Thaba Chweu Municipality on the 24th presented its IDP planning to residents of Ward 12 in a public consultation meeting. The meeting was chaired by Councillor Nicko Janse Van Vuuren and was attended by the Mayor, Councillor Michael Ncongwane, the Municipal Manager, Mr Surprise Maebela, all the Senior Managers and the new CFO, Mr. Lesley Mokwena. The meeting was reasonably well attended by residents.From the outset it was clear that Thaba Chweu had done their homework and they presented a logical and clear Integrated Development Plan, (IDP) with their priorities set correctly. The meeting debated and agreed that sustainable growth only follows proper, working infrastructure. It was acknowledged that Steelpoort/Burgersfort was growing at a faster rate and that Lydenburg/Mashishing was lagging behind. Issues such as additional schools, a private hospital, good roads, reliable electricity and water supply were priorities. The meeting agreed that recent improvements to streets, especially Viljoen street, were well executed and the Mayor thanked the mines, the private sector, residents and the Lydenburg/Mashishing Business Chamber for their assistance. It was also agreed that the improvements to the water supply system could already be seen, but Council was reminded that the uninterrupted supply (generator) of power to the water works was crucial, especially during periods of load shedding. The MM and CFO explained that current Eskom accounts were being paid, together with an additional R2.5 M per month and that the likelihood of Eskom switching off power from June, was remote, as TCM was in constant talks with Eskom.The sewerage treatment works are inadequate and needs to be expanded. Discussions were held re. smart prepaid meters and the improvement of revenue collection. Proposed relief for defaulters could elicit severe criticism from loyal payers, but looking at the bigger picture, bringing on board new ratepayers should be a priority to the benefit of all. One either has the current revenue base or you make plans to expand it. The rates and clearance certificates for farms were briefly discussed. The question of the enforcement of municipal bylaws were discussed. This include issues such as loud music (noise pollution), building requirements, stray dogs etc.Priorities in the IDP are: Water, roads, sanitation, electricity, housing, land, community facilities, education, health, public safety, animal control and social services.Municipal rates, discounts and amnesties were discussed as ways of improving revenue collection.The meeting agreed that although other municipalities are growing fast, there are still m a n y r e a s o n s f o r m a k i n g Lydenburg/Mashishing your home of choice. They include amongst others, a much better climate, relative peace and calm in communities, a lower population density, stable workforce, lower levels of crime, being on major tourism routes, scenic beauty and so on. With improved infrastructure and reasonable, fair rates, it could once again be the place of choice.Mr. Leon De Jager on behalf of business and

I have news for all my good reader friends. You may not like it. Carefully read your history. We are all foreigners in this country. Even the Khoi-San, who were the first group around, were nomadic and never staked out any piece of land and recorded it to claim it as their territory. They moved around a bit, but they were here. Many of you will dispute it, but consider the following, which applies to all of us:

Your system of class distinction is Indian, as is your favourite curry. Your cattle are African/European and your money

En die hoop van wat saam met ’n geboorte uitgestort word sit ek in die ‘iets-loop-reg’ kategorie. Dis asof iets nie pluis is nie. Ja, ek weet daar is definitief iets nie. Magma is stadig maar seker besig om oor Suid-Afrika uit te loop. Iets krap aan my... iets is regtig nie lekker nie. Noem dit ’n sesde sintuig - die bom gaan nog bars. So dis lekker op te kyk wanneer word Engeland se toekomstige Koning of Koningin gebore. Alhoewel die nuwe baba ook in ’n lang tou gaan moet wag. Soos arme Prins Charles en sy broers. Dit bly vir my baie interessant. Die feit dat SA so uitmekaar val - dis seker wat my pla. Dit voel daar ’n trop skape is wat na mekaar soek. Niemand is seker van hul plek in SA nie. En die hoop van wat saam met ’n geboorte uitgestort word sit ek in die ‘iets-loop-reg’ kategorie. Want in Engeland wil dit voorkom of daar nog party goed reg verloop. Mê (verwysend na die trop skape wat saam geherd is by die Britte).Die belangstelling in die Engelse Koningsgesin kom van my tante Alwien Koeleman. Sy sou Prins Charles en Prinses Diana se troue vir geen geld in die wêreld misloop nie. My tante (’n legende in Lydenburg) het alles gereël dat sy met die groot dag in London sou wees. Die hordes mense wat mekaar wou vertrap vir ’n beter staanplek het haar egter so ontstig, sy is terug hotelkamer toe en het die troue op TV gekyk.Later het sy teruggebel Suid-Afrika toe en verskriklik gehuil. Die oomblik was net te groot tussen al die vreemde mense. Met Prinses Diana se troue was ek net drie jaar oud. Ons het nog die videokasset wat ons gebruik het om dit op te neem. Ek onthou net dat ek in my ouma se sitkamer op die mat gesit en kyk het. My ouma het heerlike eetgoed gebak vir al die gaste. Met Alwien se terugkeer uit Engeland het sy vir ons ’n teestelletjie gebring en van die ander toeriste-aandenkings met die Union Jack op en foto’s van die glansegpaar. Ek is bevoorreg om dit nog te hê. Een van my gunsteling boeke van alle tye is The Little Prinsesses’ deur Marion Crawford, Prinses Elizabeth (nou Koningin en haar suster Margaret se oppasser). Dit was ’n seer-geliefde boek van my ma en tante wat reeds in 1950 verskyn het. Ons het nog die oorspronklike kopie. Diegene wat The King’s Speech op die silwerdoek gesien het, sal ook waarde aan die boek heg. Die twee prinsesse se klere in die fliek is byvoorbeeld kopieë van dié in die boek. En Koning George VI (Koninging Elizabeth II se pa) se hakkel-probleem word in die boek beskryf. Die hele gedoente laat my aan ’n sprokie dink. Dit mag vreemd klink dat ek ons Suid-Afrikaners as ‘n deurmekaar trop skap sien. Want elke land het tog probleme. Maar genade....As ons die “Engelse upper-lip” trek en almal met respek behandel - sal dit tog seker al beter gaan. Die magma gaan hier nog baie dinge verbrand.

VOORMALIGE Natuurwetenskaplikes, Natuurbewaarders, Direkteure en admin personeel van die destydse Hoofdirektoraat Natuurbewaring in Transvaal, het op 17 April by die pragtige Laske Nakke Lapa bymekaargekom vir hulle jaarlikse kuier. Die tyd stap aan en gryskoppe was aan die orde van die dag, met van die manne se ouderdomme wat gewissel het van 55 tot oor die 80. Die dames was nog almal mooi jonk en duidelik goed opgepas. Sowat 45 beamptes van Gauteng, Noordwes, Limpopo en Mpumalanga het die pelgrimstog meegemaak en daar is ’n hond uit ’n bos gekuier en laaaang stories vertel oor die goeie dae. Andre Hart en sy span was verantwoordelik vir die twee spitte met ’n varkie en ’n skapie daarop. Verskeie beamptes soos Deon Swart, Dolf van Coller, Magdel en Dirk Boshoff, Prof Brian Reilley en die TUT, Lampies Lambrechts, Deon Cornelius en ander het die funksie met borgskappe en insameling moontlik gemaak. Rudi en Gerda Hartzer en hulle personeel Vicky en die ander van Laske Nakke verdien spesiale dank vir hulle skitterende diens en fasiliteite. Matilda Coetzee het hard gewerk met die reëlings. Hierdie span was nie net kollegas nie, maar het oor die jare hegte en waardevolle vriende geword. Dié klas mense waarmee ons die oorlog van Natuurbewaring met passie kon veg en dit goed gedoen het. Ysters. My dank gaan aan almal wat die moeite gedoen het om te kom en wat gehelp en bygedra het. Dit was voorwaar ’n eer om lid van julle span te wees.Andre Coetzee.

LOCAL beauty Natasha Graham participated in the World Festive Model in Bulgaria. During this competition she was crowned Photo Model of the Year 2015. She had a short time to prepare for the competition but gave the judges her all. She was scouted by well known model coach and designer Ronell Joubert, who saw her potential as a model. Natasha was referred to Global Artists Talent Management and Training who has worked alongside Ronell to get Natasha ready for the competition. Elaine Grobler also introduced Natasha to the Serenity school where she received training (a Global Artist Initiative). Elaine and Joleen Coetzee were involved in her finer training and Annalize for the beautiful photos. Ronell put a lot of hard work into the designing of Natasha's clothing and getting her ready for the trip to Bulgaria. Everyone is very proud of Natasha. This is just the beginning for this local model. Natasha would like to thank her grandfather and grandmother especially who supported her and everyone who made this wonderful experience a reality.

XENOPHOBIA/Afrophobia is our worst nightmare – it signals a slide to complete lawlessness. Without 'law and order' South Africa will degenerate into anarchy. We have heard of threats from terrorist groups and African governments threaten to close South African business. Surely all this will not create financial opportunities for local communities but rather deteriorate our communities. Xenophobic attacks in a sense, is worse than what the perpetrator feels he is correcting or addressing – it represents collective action of the worst kind – there is no certainty that the correct “perpetrator” has been identified, the sanction is not proportional to the crime committed, and without fail, in each recorded case, a horrific brutality has been meted out. And it demeans the dignity of the executioner! How is it possible that one can be content to burn a person to death for the reason that this person is darker than I am,

Who wants to live in a SA such as this?or from a different geographical location? Can one feel happy and at peace as a person after such a dastardly deed? Does it not put one in the same category as a murderer? Who wants to live in a South Africa such as this - where humanity is so cheap – whether at the hands of the primary perpetrator, or the vengeful collective victim, or indeed the state? But, we cannot all flee from our democratic land to far flung territories overseas – and so, we have to stand our ground, determine what is causing this response, and for goodness sake DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT. Though much cause will be found in formal government functions, or lack thereof, much can be said about the role of the family, community, the public, and society in general in combating this scourge. WHAT the devil is an Arrinera, you may ask? Unveiled at the recent Poznan motor show in Poland, the Hussarya pictured here is the follow up to the original supercar concept shown off as long ago as 2011. Arrinera never actually got that car into production but this new one features a new front splitter and larger rear wing for improved downforce.The very attractive carbonfibre body was designed by Lee Noble but now features new headlights, re-styled exhaust outlets and lightweight wheels. The Hussarya is powered by a GM-sourced 6.2-litre V8 engine – although the fact it was pumped up to 480kW and 820Nm meant it pushed the Polish track machine a little better than your average Corvette. 0 to 100kph in 3.2sec; 0 – 200kph in 8.9sec and a top speed above 340kph is bang on what a modern supercar should produce.However, the company has also tested an 8.3-litre V8 – sourced from goodness knows where – with 580kW and 900Nm of torque. GENERAL MOTORS South Africa has released the facelifted Chevrolet Cruze. Both the sedan and the hatchback have acquired the updated nose and rear section, while there is also a few mechanical and entertainment updates.For the first time the Cruze will be offered with the 1,4-litre Ecotec, turbocharged engine which is connected to a six-speed automatic transmission. This combination is only available for the sedan model though. This is the same unit as found in other GM products. The engine delivers 103 kW from 4 900 r/min, and 200 N.m from 1 850 r/min. The dash to 100 km/h is done in a claimed 9,3 seconds, top speed is said to be 195 km/h and fuel consumption 5,8 litres per 100 km.There is also a manual gearbox available with this engine, while the rest of the range is offered with a 1,6-litre, naturally-aspirated engine. The entire range is also equipped with standard safety features such as electronic stability control (ESC), traction control, and ABS with EBD.In terms of entertainment, the LS models are fitted with the Chevrolet MyLink infotainment system.carmag.co.za

DIE HIGHLANDS PANORAMA NUUS het verlede week die ongekende voorreg gehad om “under cover” saam met landwye verteenwoordigers van General Motors SA, na hulle fasiliteite in Port Elizabeth te gaan kyk.Ek en William Swart van die Platinum Gazette in Burgersfort is vergesel deur handelaarshoof Jehane Claase en verkoopsbestuurder Steelpoort, Timothy Chowles. Dit was ’n ervaring wat mens moeilik kan bekryf.Met ons aankoms is ons meegedeel dat ons CCSI agente is (Chevrolet Cruze Special Investigators) en dat ons soveel moontlik leidrade oor dié motor moes vind. Na die inleiding is ons in spanne ingedeel en was die splinternuwe Chevrolet Cruze bekend gestel. Ons motor vir die dag was ’n wit 1.4 turbo outomaties. Ons sal ander dag meer oor die motor vertel.Daarna is ons na die PDC (Parts Distribution Centre) die grootste motoronderdele pakhuis in Suidelike Afrika. Met ’n onderdakruimte van 38 000 vk meter dek die “stoor” onderdele vir Chevrolet, Opel, Isuzu, Hummer, Cadilac en Saab vir motors tot 10 jaar oud. Dit is vir meer as 200 modelvariante en dek 580 000 voertuie oor 10 jaar. Daar is sowat 170 000 partnommers wat plaaslik en vanaf oorsee vanaf meer as 295 verskillende buite leweransiers verskaf word. Dié pakhuis versprei 18 000 onderdele items per dag. Die hele sisteem is gerekenariseer.Vanaf die PDC is ons na die VCDC (Vehicle Conversion & Distribution Centre) waar ons nie toegelaat is om fotos te neem nie. Hier staan gemiddeld 7 000 voertuie gereed vir aflewering, uitvoer ens. GM deel met Volkswagen (Uitenhage) hulle eie spesiale private spoor en trein wat by Spoornet aansluit en waarmee voertuie na Gauteng en verder noord vervoer word. Alle ingevoerde motors land hier. Daar is ’n afdeling wat vervoerskade soos krappies uitsorteer en al die vragmotoroperateurs soos Motor Via het kantore op die perseel, waarmee voertuie by jou plaaslike agent afgelewer word. Dit is ’n indrukwekkende operasie. Elke voertuig staanplek is met n strepieskode gerekenariseer en die voertuig se strepieskode word daarmee verbind, so as jy ’n rooi dubbelkajuit Isuzu soek, haal hulle hom dadelik uit die menigte uit vir jou.Daarna is ons weer per Cruze na die Struandale GA (General Assembly) aanleg waar die motors gebou word. Sekere Spark komponente kom vanaf Korea, sekere Ute komponente kom vanaf Brasilië, Isuzu komponente vanaf Japan en die Opels kom vanaf Duitsland, voorwaar ’n globale operasie.Die fabriek is egter iets om te sien. Chevrolet Cruze, Spark en Ute en Isuzu word hier gebou. Hulle bou sowat 87 Chevs (al die plaaslike modelle en variante) per dag en sowat 73 Isuzus (al die modelle) per dag.Vanaf die buig van die rou plaatmetaal, sweis van die bakwerk, fosfaat korrosiedip, bak van die onderlaag, finale verf, bak van die verf by 180 grade, toerus met sitplekke, paneelbord en glas word die Isuzu oorhoofs met sy onderstel “getrou”. Die onderstel kom met enjin, ratkas, dryflyn, aste, suspensie en remme vanaf ’n ander monteerlyn tot waar hulle trou. Daarna word die finale “trim” gedoen, wiele opgesit, vloeistowwe ingegooi en ry die bakkie op eie stoom uit die fabriek uit. Die hele proses vanaf rou staal tot die bakkie ry, duur ’n asemrowende slegs 3 uur en 10 minute. (Die 73 Isuzus per dag is moontlik omdat hulle die een agter die ander op die monteerbaan beweeg en daar dus gelyktydig aan ’n klomp voeruie in verskillende stadiums gewerk word).Ons het in effektief twee dae, vier vliegtuie gehaal, in 2 hotelle geslaap en nog ’n aandfunksie bygewoon. Intussen het ons met motors gery, bus gery en kilometers in die fabrieke en pakhuise gestap. Voorwaar ’n logistieke prestasie. GM het dit vir 700 handelaarspersoneel oor 7 dae gedoen (100 per dag).Wat opgeval het was die vriendelikheid van al die werkers, dis silwerskoon fasiliteite en die klem op veiligheid en gehalte. GM praat van “Total Customer Care”. Tydens die finale afsluitingsfunksie het ek, William, Jehane en Timothy die legendariese baasspeurder Piet Byleveld (een van die gaste vir die aand) ontmoet.Hierdie was ’n besondere eer en voorreg wat ons te beurt geval het en ek wil graag my dank uitspreek teenoor Jehane Claase en die Westvaal Mashishing span, dat hulle my en William saamgeneem het.Andre Coetzee.

MCGEE EN KIE het op Vrydag 17 April tydens 'n spogfunksie hulde gebring aan 'n plaaslike sportster.

Eienaar en handelaarshoof, Garth McGee wat die oudste besigheid in een familie in Lydenburg bedryf, het 'n Ford Ranger 4x4 dubbelkajuitbakkie aan rugbyster “Kwagga” (Albertus Stephanus) Smith geskenk.

Die McGees en Smiths is ou Lydenburg families en Kwagga en Bernard (Garth se seun) was saam op skool en het saam kattekwaad gedoen soos om bosvarke op die plaas te skiet.

Kwagga (gebore 11/6/1993) het as rugbyspeler op skool begin skitter en het reeds op HTS Middelburg in skolerugby begin uitblink. Hy het onder andere in die Cravenweek Pumas onder 18 gespeel, was deel van die IRB Sewes, die Blitsbokke en het vanaf 2012 vir die Goue Leeus uitgedraf.

Tydens Garth se toespraak by die oorhandiging, het hy genoem dat Kwagga 'n ambassadeur vir Lydenburg is en dat dit 'n eer is om McGee&Co Ford met Kwagga te assosieer.

Tydens die funksie wat goed bygewoon was, is handtekeninge uitgedeel, videos gewys, toesprake gemaak en die aand is heerlik afgesluit met 'n spitbraai.

Die Highlands Panorama Nuus wens Kwagga al die beste toe vir sy toekoms en wil spesiaal vir Garth McGee uitsonder en bedank vir sy meelewendheid in die Lydenburg sakesektor en gemeenskap.

Gone are the days where we can glibly blame poverty and deprivation for our crime rate – yes, it has a contributory role, but crime is so complex and its causes are multiple. Moreover it is offensive to our millions of poor people to hang crime X e n o p h o b i a a n d vigilantism around their proverbial neck.Law enforcement alone cannot break this cycle – although the lack of early and e ffec t ive po l i ce responses have been shown to be a trigger, as is the processes of the justice system which is still an enigma to the many who have to access it – as accused, as victim, as witness, as interested onlooker. We have seen no real convict ion from p e r p e t r a t o r s o f Xenophobia, we have seen a man torched in front of law enforcement and little done. It has been 7 years since the first wave of Xenophobic attacks, with one image that has stayed a fresh in many minds, 'The burning Man' to date no arrest has been done or any convictions. Seeing an alleged perpetrator of a crime 'walk free' after a successful bail application, or even a diversion or non custodial sentence, is e n o u g h t o s p u r t h e community into action as they perceive this to be another example of police and judicial intransigence.Given our past, violence as a means o f conf l i c t r e s o l u t i o n i s n o w embedded in our psyche – our history attests to this. Violence towards partners in the home, violence on school campuses, violence b y l a w e n f o r c e m e n t officers, violence by parents towards their children, violence on roads, violence on sports fields – these are all examples of how entrenched violence has become. Xenophobia attacks are one more example of this – with the caveat that it is a response to the desperation of communities who are bent over by the constant and endemic avalanche of crime against them.Xenophobic attacks cannot b e c o n d o n e d – notwithstanding what causes it, how desperate a n d v i c t i m i z e d a community might feel – we just cannot go that route if we are to salvage anything like a half decent life in our democracy. But, WE must do something about it. We all have a role to play, Emmanuel Sithole could be any of us, could be our lover, brother, sister child. We need a collective approach to find a lasting s o l u t i o n , c o n n e c t i n g communities and uniting Africa.Jacques Sibomana

Race Format: 4 Day Stage Race /3 Distances – 126km, 142km, 211km

Team Lite : 126km/2650m ascent) for 15 year old riders and older

Day 1: 32km/650m ascent Prologue (08h30 start time trial)

Day 2: 51km/1500m ascent (07h20 mass start)

Day 3: 43km/500m ascent (07h20 mass start)

Cost: R3600 per team (2 Riders, 3 Days) Limited to 100 Teams only. This option is mainly intended to attract school going adolescents to compete in a JUNIOR MTB TEAM STAGE RACE consisting of thee half-marathon distances (30-50km) for the HONOUR OF ACHIEVING A PODIUM POSITION in one of the three categories. Parents are encouraged to support their budding MTB "stars- in- the- making" to participate in this endeavour - the first to be offered in South African Stage Races. A few days out of school for the sport is a small price to pay for this accolade, something that we are sure would be understood by all... The Open Team category is for passionate mountain bikers who are not as competitive, but would like to ride with a partner or family member to experience what stage racing is all about, take photos along the route and generally have a blast in great surroundings and like-minded company.
