DESCRIPTION

SD Voice is very glad to interview two graduates of Soka University, Hiroko Yoshimura (Soka University in America 2012) and Hikari Sam Leung (Soka University in Japan 2011). Let them share their experi-ences at Soka University and their relationships with their mentor!

  • Q1: Why did you study at Soka University?Hiroko: As soon as my mom learned about the plan of establishing Soka University in America (SUA), she told me that I shall study at SUA. Ikeda Sensei always tells us that as a world leader, you need to be able to speak English and know the world. As I left Japan for Australia to get ready for SUA, my moms dream became my dream. By the time I was a high school student, I strongly determined to study at SUA. Hikari: Well, my reason was simpler. I am always fond of Japanese lan-guage and culture. Thats the reason I picked Soka University in Japan at first.

Q5: Do you feel loved by Sensei?Hikari: I think he loves me, this love also extent to other members and non-members.Hiroko: Yes, I do, especially when I was at SUA. I felt that the cam-pus is filled with Senseis love. For example, in the beginning of the construction of the campus, Sensei requested two things for students. The first request was to serve international meals at the cafeteria so that overseas students will not miss the food from their home countries, also, students can enjoy varieties of dishes from different cultures. The second request was to build bathrooms in each dormitory room so students can enjoy their private bathroom. Moreover, each room was built spaciously, allowing students study in their rooms comfortably. I also feel Senseis love whenever I receive encouraging gifts from him. For example, Sensei prepared snacks for us over 3 nights in every mid-term and final examination week, so as to encourage stu-dents who were studying late. When I graduated from SUA in 2012, Sensei even ordered special files, binders and photo stands to con-

Q6: So do you think you love Sensei? Hiroko: Of course. My love for Sensei is a mix of respect and admi-ration. I love him because he is the one who has been guiding me how we can live our lives to make ourselves and others happy. I love him because he cares so much for me and other members. I love him because he has a big hope for our future. Hikari: Yes! I love him. Without him, there would not be Hikari in this life time. One way to show my love for him is to contribute to the society.

Q7: Some non-members feel that the love between members and Sensei is fanatic, how would you ex-plain that?Hiroko: I understand that many non-members often misunderstand that SGI members treat Sensei like a Buddha or a God, as SGI members respect him and admire him to the extent that we strongly follow his guidance and suggestions. I think our great sense of re-spect can be understood by non-members by explaining the great things he has done (such as creating the bridge between Japan and China), and by telling his sincere care towards anyone he meets.Hikari: Most people respect Sensei because he is great. This is es-pecially true for people encouraged by him in person. However, I can see some of them praise him like a god. This is what Sensei does not wish. I remember years ago I watched the Headquarter meeting video in Japan. It captured a scene that Sensei was play-ing the piano though he was not perfect. He even admitted that he lacked practice. This is one of the evidence that he is as human as us and not godlike. His spirit of encouraging members is what we have to learn. He is our mentor but not a god.

Q8: Some members are not as fortunate as you two who graduated from the Universities founded by Sensei. How can these members feel the love of Sensei?Hiroko: Writing to Sensei. Because he is open to everyone, willing to hear your happiness, sufferings and struggles. If you write to him, he will always respond you by giving you snacks, files and folders.Hikari: Surely by reading his books. Sometimes you need time to as-similate what he means, and then you can feel his love and concern.

Q9: Have you ever written to Sensei? Did you report your victories? What did you report? How did you feel?Hiroko: I have written to Sensei numerous times. Every time I write to him I share my struggles as well as victories. For example, when I got my job in Hong Kong, I wrote him a letter, he immediately replied me saying Congratulations. Please take care of your health and please send my best regards to your parents.

Hikari: Yes, I reported him when I gained the scholarship from Queens University. I am looking forward to writing my next victory to him. I think he will be happier than us when we write him a victory report. Being victorious at where we are at is the noble mission of all Soka graduates.

Q2: What did you gain from studying at Soka Uni-versity? Hiroko: Besides knowledge, I learned taking leadership, caring for others, managing my time and effectively communicating with oth-ers. I developed my principles and values, which guides myself to the kind of life I would like to live for the rest of my life.Hikari: Friendship and trust, these are also found in the slogan of SGI-UK(Trust through friendship, peace through trust.). I agree no more with that. Peace is based on trust and trust is through friend-ship. It is proved by the extensive exchange programs offered by both Soka Universities.

Q3: Do you think we need a mentor in our life? Will it make a difference if you have not met Sensei? Hikari: I think this passage explains really well. The role of the mentor is to point toward an ideal and the most effective means of its achievement, while the disciple strives to realize this ideal on an even greater scale than has been achieved by the mentor. The shared ideal, and the shared struggle to realize it, create a profound closeness in the lives of mentor and disciple--what Buddhism de-scribes as the oneness of mentor and disciple. This is the lifeblood of Buddhism. Hiroko: You definitely need a mentor in your life, not necessarily a religious mentor, so that you have someone to look up to and to make that person your role mode, hence you can always make progress in your life and become a greater person.

Q4: Can you recall the most memorable moment or incident with Sensei?Hiroko: Regarding to the most memorable moment, I had an honor-able opportunity to see Sensei in person in the Entrance Ceremony of Soka University 2008 in Tokyo. Seeing Sensei for the first time in my life, I felt great joy and overwhelmed at the same time. Sensei constantly told us to give our gratitude to our parents and to accom-plish a greater good in society. Sensei made a very firm and power-ful speech. Even though he was at an elderly age, he tried his very best to encourage young people. At that moment, I determined and promised Sensei that I will accomplish something that Sensei would be proud of sometime in my life. Hikari: A message from Sensei: Whatever happened, I hope you do not give up faith in the Mystic law at anyhow. If you are not defeated, it is already the proof of your practice.

gratulate us. I was surprised to see so many gifts from Sensei. I con-stantly feel his incessant and unconditional love to his SGI daugh-ters and sons whenever I am and wherever I go. Furthermore, I believe that his love extends to non-SGI members. From anecdotes and stories that I heard, he cares and loves every single person on this planet, tries to encourage and bring out their Buddha nature for their happiness.
