Private investment being courted for Berlins new airport

Although its opening has been postponed several times, and

with a current opening date now scheduled for 2017, the

German newspaper Bild am Sonntag has reported that such

weighty investors as JP Morgan and Macquarie have been

courted by Berlin to take a stake in the new airport. The

newspaper report states that investors will be given

confidential details relating to the airports business plans in order to make concrete offers, though it would not name its

sources. A spokesman for the airport however indicated that there had

been now new developments regarding a possible part

privatisation of the airport, stating that the company, FBB

)Flughafen Berlin Brandenburg(, was currently in a pre-notification phase with the European Commission, whereby it must clearly show the potential return on investment for any

private investors. The spokesman subsequently referred to a

June 18 statement where the airport said: This does not, however, prejudge whether should be privatised, either in

whole or in part. The spokesman refused to comment specifically on speculation as to whether any particular potential investors had been contacted or not. The EUR5.1 billion (USD$5.7 billion) airport is presently jointly owned by the city of Berlin, the state of Brandenburg

and Germanys federal government. However Bild did say that a comprehensive report was expected by the owners at the

end of the year as to whether part-privatization was feasible,

making it also clear that once operational, the federal

government would look to offload its 26% stake.

guidance2015 Royce updates -Rolls Rolls-Royce updated its 2015 guidance, including a preview of its

expected half-year results. In Civil Aerospace, Rolls-Royce

continues to expect 2015 underlying revenue and profit within the

guided range provided in February of 7,000m to 7,300m and 800m to 900m respectively. However, the company now expects the impact of reduced Trent 700 deliveries to be greater than initial

estimates, reflecting further adverse developments in the demand

for OE and spare engines and related pricing. In addition, lower-

than-expected demand for engines to power business jets and a

softening regional aftermarket will also adversely impact profit.

These market headwinds should be balanced by good growth in its

widebody aftermarket and a larger-than-expected benefit from the

reversal of a balance sheet provision on the Trent 1000 launch, as

a result of an expected significant improvement in operating

performance, and by improved retrospective TotalCare contract

profitability. The value of the provision release and contract

profitability are expected together to contribute around 200m, somewhat more than previously expected. Rolls-Royce continues

to expect 2015 underlying profit before tax to be phased more to

the second half than in 2014, led principally by Civil Aerospace and

Power Systems. As a result, first half underlying profit before tax is

expected to be between 390m and 430m, or around 30% of the full year, compared with roughly 40% in 2014. Free cash flow is

expected to be between (570)m to (620)m compared with (347)m in the first half of 2014.

Airline Retailing: The State of the Industry Sabre Airline Solutions has released a new whitepaper highlighting the business challenges faced by airlines in the area of customer data, retailing, and personalization. Brand differentiation and personalized sales and service are becoming increasingly strategic areas for leading airlines due to their market share and profit potential. In the whitepaper, Sabre discusses the unique complexities in the industry, analyzes new findings about revenue potential, and discusses ideal solutions for these problems in the market place. Airline Retailing: The State of the Industry Customer experience and personalization have become the

topical focus for multiple industry verticals in recent years, ever

since Amazon and Netflix turned the customer-interaction

paradigm on its head. Even within the last decade, both retailers

were known only for their original, core products books, disc reservations and shipping, respectively. Netflixs core competency included processing online reservations for a

particular product selection and transporting that selection, on

time, to its chosen destination. Sound familiar? Today, Netflix is

known as a pioneer in the personalization, customer experience,

and retailing disciplines. The company has chosen to further

adapt its business model by evolving into a content creation

studio in order to deliver unique, targeted, brand-differentiating

products to its customers. These strategic business model shifts

are based on innovative customer data and analytics systems

that empower Netflix to create the right products, for the right

individual, offered at the right time. .

Industries that create and store vast amounts of customer data have the

greatest opportunity to create relevant business value from the

aggregation, analysis, and actioning of that data. By that measure, the

airline industry maintains, quite possibly, the greatest personalization and

retailing opportunity in any industry vertical today. Though that sounds

ambitious, the environment is ripe for disruption. Airlines today are sitting on terabytes of first-party customer data

detailing shopping and buying behavior, check-in and baggage history, in-

flight service preferences, airport movement, customer service

interactions, and many, many other sources of data. Companies like

Vodafone, DIRECTV, Stubhub, and others have boosted incremental

revenue by building a holistic view of their individual customers and

personalizing the customers experience with their brand. As consumers become accustomed to customization in other parts of their lives --

banking, retail, dining -- they are going to expect travel companies to be at

that standard and be at that standard very soon, says Henry Harteveldt, industry analyst at San Francisco-based Atmosphere Research Group.1 Customers have been engaging with agents, cabin crew, and call center

representatives since the genesis of commercial aviation. Today, airlines

have already seen early success in mining and analyzing social media

data and talking to their customers on a one-to-one basis. Now, the ever-

connected traveler carries around a personal interaction opportunity at all

times in the form of a smartphone. 97 percent of travelers are carrying a

mobile device when they travel, with 81 percent of those devices being

smartphones.2 Mobile is now the fourth touch-point, having become fully

proliferated in the marketplace, there has never been a greater

opportunity to aggregate data across the interaction phases to see the full

view of each customer. In addition to revealing strategic insights into

customer buying patterns, a 360-degree view also helps equip front-line,

customer-facing employees with the right information to offer an optimal

customer experience within the appropriate context.

Administration (TSA) amid the agencys reevaluation of airport security bringing banned items through following revelations of undercover agents

sixth administrator in TSAs history. He told a packed room at TSA headquarters and a based strategies-riskin Arlington, Virginia that he will be guided by

multi-layered approach to aviation security. He emphasized that aviation remains a target and that the threat is more decentralized and diffuse than ever before. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) secretary Jeh Johnson, who swore in

fairly 70 (IG) had conducted the DHS inspector generalNeffenger, said discreet tests at airport checkpoints in which undercover agents attempted to bring banned items past screeners. Johnson noted that IG agents have the benefit of insiders knowledge and dont pass through all layers of security. Nevertheless, he said, the results were completely unsatisfactory and Johnson has ordered back to basics training for all TSA officers. TSA is now implementing this in a phased and layered manner and it will be completed by the end of September, Johnson said. Among a wide range of TSA practices under review, Johnson said the process

of managed inclusion, in which some passengers who are not members of the Check lanes, is being -are sent to Pre Check expedited screening program-Pre

reevaluated, in part because some Pre-Check lines are becoming too long. Were looking at this right now and we want to arrive at a thoughtful balance, Johnson said during a press conference following Neffengers swearing in ceremony. I do believe this is an issue that must be studied. As weve progressed with TSA Pre-Check, which is a terrific program, weve seen longer and longer short lines. Johnson said his guidance to Neffenger is to be an energetic leader and not hesitate to think outside of the box, adding, We must continually and comprehensively evaluate and reevaluate what is best for aviation security. Neffenger said he aims to build a culture of adaptation that is able to rapidly deploy new concepts, adding, We will make the necessary changes, we will reassess old assumptions and we will make the hard choices.
