God’s Invitation. Our Opportunity.A Call to Prayer and Self-Denial is our opportunity to rise up and meet God in the margins dwelling with our brothers and sisters in need. As children of God we are more than partners, we are family and are not whole until all are whole. Until all have the resources to thrive.

For generations United Methodist Women has partnered with organizations and individuals working in local communities both in the United States and across the globe.

A Call to Prayer and Self-Denial helps sustain that work. It is a special offering. It draws on United Methodist Women’s experiences with leadership development, mission education and spiritual growth, and culminates in a most tangible expression: sacrificial giving of our dollars that says we trust God and we are in community.

When we give:We trust God to transform our dollars into everyday miracles that bring our brothers and sisters into wholeness.

We become actively intertwined in mutually supportive community with people down the street and around the world sharing in the body of Christ.

We are transformed not only by hearing the cares and concerns of our neighbors, but by the opportunity to act within God’s plan to create a world where we all thrive.

We Give. We Make a Difference.100% of the money given through A Call to Prayer and Self-Denial goes directly to women, children and youth.

In 2018 United Methodist Women raised nearly $600,000 with 100% participation from our conferences. We rise!

Our Dollars. Our Community.When we give our money to A Call to Prayer and Self-Denial we rise to meet God and become part of local communities across the world.

100% of the money given through A Call to Prayer and Self-Denial goes directly to women, children and youth.

The Wesley Community CenterThe Wesley Community Center is a National Mission Institution funded in part by money from A Call to Prayer and Self-Denial giving. It supports young mothers by offering child-care and the Job Search and Job Readiness Program.

“If it weren’t for the program,” Tanisha Biggerson explained, “I wouldn’t be where I am today. I was so stressed all the time. Nothing was right. Nothing was in place. Since I started coming to Wesley, I’ve been able to relax.”

This 100-year-old National Mission Institution in St. Paul, Minnesota, is funded in part by A Call to Prayer and Self-Denial. Emma Norton Services has made a difference in the lives of thousands of women and their families, including residents like Pam Mischel.

I do not mean that there should be relief for others and pressure on you, but it is a question of a fair balance between your present abundance and their need, so that their abundance may be for your need, in order that there may be a fair balance. As it is written,“The one who had much did not have too much, and the one who had little did not have too little.” (2 Corinthians 8:13–15)

Our Circle. Our Turn.We have an opportunity to encourage our circles at home to meet our family both near and far; to be part of something much larger than ourselves. Help stir up the spirit in your home and in your church. Reach within and rise up to meet God’s call.

Just as Paul encouraged people in the church of Corinth, so too are we called to create opportunity for our brothers and sisters so that all may have enough to thrive.

• Pray for United Methodist Women’s continuing commitment to being actively intertwined in mutually supportive community and the potential of A Call to Prayer and Self-Denial gifts to help our brothers and sisters, down the road or around the world, who are in need.

• Share a “mission moment” related to the program during a service or coffee hour.

• Give out prayer cards in your church and learn about challenges in your community and the global community.

• Dedicate a meeting of your youth group to talking about the challenges young people face and how your community can empower them to be change-makers.

• Share the stories of people supported by United Methodist Women giving on church displays, in a newsletter or on social media.

하나님의 초대. 우리의 기회기도와 절제의 날은 도움이 필요한 형제 자매들과 함께하고 있는 하나님을 만나기 위해 우리가 일어 설 수 있는 기회이다. 하나님의 자녀인 우리들은 서로를 위한 동반자이자 가족이다. 모든 사람들이 온전할 때 우리 자신도 온전해 진다. 모든 사람들이 잘 살아야 우리 자신도 잘 살게 된다.

연합감리교회 여선교회는 수 세대에 걸쳐서 미국과 전세계의 지역 공동체에서 일하는 사람들 및 기관들과 연대해 왔다.

기도와 절제의 날은 우리의 사역을 계속 하는데 큰 도움을 준다.기도와 절제의 날에 우리는 특별 헌금을 한다. 이 헌금은 연합감리교회 여선교회가 오랬동안 추구해 온 지도자 계발, 선교 교육, 영적 성장의 경험을 지속하며 가장 현실적인 도움을 주는 것을 가능하게 한다. 희생적인 헌금을 통해 우리가 하나님을 온전히 의지하는 한 공동체 임을 다시 확인하게 된다.

우리가 헌금할 때:우리는 하나님이 이 헌금을 통해 우리 형제 자매들을 온전하게 하시는 기적을 매일 주심을 믿는다.

우리는 같은 동네 사는 사람들이나 세계 전역에 있는 사람과 함께 모두가 그리스도의 몸 안에서 서로 공존하는 한 공동체로 엮이게 된다.

우리는 우리 이웃들의 이야기를 들으면서 변화될 뿐 아니라 모든 사람들이 번성하는 세상을 만드시는 하나님의 사역에 참여하게 된다.

우리는 헌금합니다. 우리는 영향력이 있습니다.기도와 절제의 날의 헌금은 전액이 여성, 어린이, 청소년을 위한 사역에 쓰여진다.

여선교회는 2018년 모든 지역 총회가 다 참여하는 성과에 힘입어 거의 $600,000의 헌금을 모았다.

여선교회의 후원을 받고 있는 엠마 노튼 시설은 100년의 역사 동안 수 천명의 여성들과 그 가족들의 삶을 개선해 주었다. 기도와 절제의 날을 통해 모금된 여선교회 회원들의 희생적인 헌금은 미셸과 같은 여성들이 그들의 삶 을회복하는 데에 큰 도움을 주고 있다.

지역 선교사인 그레이스 무수카와 4명의 잠비아 연회 여선교회 회원들이 치시피테 학교의 학생들과 마태복음 5장 14절의 성경 공부를 한 후에 찍은 사진이다.

지역선교사인 엠마 칸터 (사진에서 맨 오른쪽)는 필리핀에서 어린이들을 교육하는 여러 기관에서 사역하고 있다. 기도와 절제의 날의 헌금을 통해 여선교회는 그녀의 사역의 후원자 중의 하나가 된다.

나는 다른 사람들을 편안하게 하고, 그 대신에 여러분을 괴롭게 하려는 것이 아니라, 평형을 이루려 합니다. 지금 여러분의 넉넉한 살림이 그들의 궁핍을 채워주면 그들의 살림이 넉넉해질 때에는, 그들이 여러분의 궁핍을 채워줄 수도 있을 것입니다. 그리하여 평형을 이루는 것입니다. 이것은 성경에 기록하기를 “많이 거둔 사람도 남지 않고 적게 거둔 사람도 모자라지 않았다”한 것과 같습니다. (고린도 후서 8장 13-15절)

우리의 원. 우리의 차례.우리는 가깝고 먼 곳에 있는 하나님의 가족들을 만나고, 우리 자신 만을 위한 것이 아니라 보다 큰 삶을 살 것을 우리가 알고 있는 사람들에게 권유할 기회가 있다. 우리는 가정과 교회에 새로운 바람을 불러 일으킬 수 있다. 우리는 가까운 사람들에게 영향을 주고 하나님의 부르심에 응답하며 일어나야 한다.

바울이 고린도 교회 교인들에게 권유 하였듯이, 우리도 우리의 형제 자매들이 어려운 사람들을 도울 수 있는 기회를 주어야 한다.

•여선교회가 계속해서 서로 협조하는 공동체가 되기를, 그리고 기도와 절제의 날의 헌금이 가까운 곳에 혹은 세계 전역에 있는 도움이 필요한 형제 자매들을 돕는데 도움이 되는 좋은 선물이 되기를 기도한다.

•예배나 친교 시간에 이 프로그램에 관련된 “선교의 나눔” 시간을 갖는다.

•교회에서 기도 카드를 나누어 주고, 지역 사회나 세계 공동체의 어려운 점에 대해 배운다.

•청소년 모임에서 청소년들이 직면하고 있는 어려운 점들에 대해 대화하고, 그들이 변혁의 사역에 참여하기 위해 어떤 도움을 줄 수 있는지 생각해 본다.

•여선교회가 후원하고 있는 사람들의 이야기를 교회 뉴스레터나 소셜 네트워크를 통해 널리 알린다.
