A French company, with previous experience building the Suez Canal, tried and failed to dig a similar canal across Panama in the 1880’s. A combina0on of mosquito born diseases and the insurmountable difficulty of digging a sea level canal across the con0nental divide defeated the French. The Panama Canal: The Americans The United States purchased the rights to build the canal from the French. Theodore Roosevelt then used the U.S. Navy to support Panamanian independence from Columbia. The United States gained rights to a 10 mile wide strip of land across the Isthmus of Panama from the new Panamanian government in exchange for $10 million. Construc0on began in 1904. The first step was to eliminate the breeding grounds for mosquitoes. The canal was completed in 1914, 6 months ahead of schedule and $23 million under budget.
