Nel panorama economico mondiale l’ortofrut-ticoltura è senza dubbio uno dei settori che pre-sentano la maggiore capacità di crescita e di inno-vazione. A testimoniarlo, da un lato, lo sviluppo del settore nell’ambito di economie emergenti come quelle di India, Cina, Brasile e, dall’altro, l’altrettanto significativo impulso conosciuto, ad esempio, da particolari linee di prodotti (quelli della cosiddetta IV gamma). E in questo conte-sto l’ortofrutticoltura italiana riveste un ruolo da protagonista, rappresentando una delle principali voci dell’export alimentare, capace negli ultimi anni di insidiare -e in qualche caso superare- il primato enologico.Proprio la spinta all’innovazione, l’attenzione ai mercati emergenti, la valorizzazione della produ-zione italiana, sono gli ambiti privilegiati su cui pone l’accento Macfrut, giunto quest’anno alla sua 29°edizione, che si è consolidata sempre più come punto di riferimento di tutta l’ortofrutti-coltura mondiale e l’edizione 2012 ne è la riprova grazie ad un incremento degli espositori esteri, fra cui la Cina, che porterà in fiera importanti no-vità. In the global economy, fruit and vegetable growing is certainly one of the sectors with the greatest ability to grow and innovate. Such ability is confirmed, on the one hand, by the development of the sector in emerging markets, such as India, China and Brazil and, on the other hand, by the significant boost experienced, for example, by particular product lines (the so-called fresh-cut products). Italian fruit and vegetable growing plays a leading role in this context, since it is one of the main food export sectors, and, in the last few years, it has undermined, and in some cases overtaken, the supremacy of wine.Macfrut drives towards innovation while focusing its attention on emerging markets and promoting Italian products. This year, at its 29th edition, Macfrut has increasingly established itself as a benchmark event for the global fruit and vegetable growing sector, confirmed by an increase in foreign exhibitors including China, which will bring important changes to the exhibition. Moreover, official foreign delegations, mainly from Eastern Europe and the Mediterranean basin are also on the increase. Macfrut’s high level of specialisation ensures a strong focus on its exhibition experience while highly professional traders, coming every year from many foreign countries, complete its main function as a business opportunity. Links with leading international events, missions to foreign countries organised together with exhibitors, meetings with foreign delegations and, above all, a special focus on matching the needs of companies from various parts of the world to the expert know-how of Italian companies, have enabled Macfrut to achieve this success while showcasing the leading companies in various fruit and vegetable growing sectors (including the Italian and foreign large-

E per proseguire in tale azione di valorizzazione, si terrà la terza edizione dell’ “Oscar Macfrut” per l’innovazione sia di prodotto che di processo.Questa edizione di Macfrut sarà un importan-te appuntamento per approfondire e delineare la situazione internazionale economica ed orto-frutticola. Durante i tre giorni di manifestazio-ne diversi saranno i convegni che analizzeranno il settore e le sue prospettive future, a partire dall’anteprima (martedì 25 settembre) con il Simposio Internazionale della fragola, con rela-tori e presenze da tutto il mondo.Infine, prosegue il nostro impegno per la pro-mozione del consumo di frutta e verdura come elemento essenziale per il raggiungimento del benessere e di corretti stili di vita. Dopo la felice esperienza avviata con il progetto “Frutta nelle scuole” quest’anno si inizierà – giovedì 27 settem-bre - a mettere a fuoco i benefici di frutta e verdu-ra, intesi come integratori naturali, per chi pratica attività sportiva a livello professionistico, ma an-che amatoriale, con la presentazione ufficiale del progetto FRUTTA, SPORT e BENESSERE, iniziativa di cui siamo ideatori e promotori e che vanta il patrocinio della Scuola dello Sport del CONI e della Wellness Foundation.

After the success of the “School Fruit Scheme” project, this year on Thursday 27 September, we will begin to focus on the benefits of fruit and vegetables, which are considered natural supplements not only for professional sports people but also for amateurs. On this occasion, we will officially present the FRUIT, SPORT and WELLBEING project, which we have created and promoted, sponsored by the Sports School of CONI (the Italian National Olympic Committee) and the Wellness Foundation.

La cittàCesena è situata nel cuore della Romagna, a breve distanza dal mare Adriatico e dalle pendici appenniniche del Monte Fumaiolo. Il centro storico, racchiuso ancora oggi dentro le mura tre-quattrocentesche, delle quali è ancora visibile la caratteristica forma dello scorpione, non è molto vasto ma ricco di numerose attrattive. Città romana con il nome di Curva Caesena, subì numerose devastazioni nel periodo delle invasioni barbariche. Fece parte dell’Esarcato di Ravenna. Nei secoli XI e XII divenne libero Comune e lottò a lungo contro Forlì, Rimini e Cervia. Per tutto il secolo XIII si alternarono al loro interno tirranide e libertà: con la signoria dei Malatesta, iniziata nel 1378, Cesena conobbe un periodo particolarmente felice tanto da divenire un fiorente centro culturale e artistico. Una visita alla città potrebbe seguire un ideale itinerario malatestiano con partenza dalla Biblioteca Malatestiana, vero e proprio gioiello della città di Cesena. Le sue origini sono legate al nome di Malatesta Novello e all’opera di ricostruzione della città semidistrutta in seguito alla strage dei Bretoni del 1377. The TownCesena is situated in the heart of Romagna, a short distance from the Adriatic Sea and the slopes of Mount Fumaiolo. The historical centre isn’t very big but is rich in attractions. To this day it is still today contained within the fourteenth century walls from which the characteristic shape of the scorpion can be seen. A Roman city named Curva Caesena, it suffered a lot of destruction in the time of the Barbarian invasions. It took part in the Exarchate of Ravenna. In the eleventh, twelfth and thirteenth centuries it became a free borough and had numerous long battles with Forlì, Rimini and Cervia. For all of the nineteenth century tyranny and freedom alternated. Under the rule of the Malatesta family, which began in 1378, Cesena had a particularly happy period, enough to become a blooming cultural and artistic centre. A visit to the city could include an itinerary following the fortunes of the Malatesta and would start in the Biblioteca Malatestiana, (Malatesta Library) the real jewel of the city of Cesena. Its origins are linked to the name of Malatesta Novello and to reconstruction work of the half-destroyed city following the massacres of the Bretons in 1377. Work of the architect from Fano, Matteo Nuti, it was completed in 1452 after five years of construction work. The Malatestiana was the first community library

1452 dopo cinque anni di lavoro, la Mala-testiana è la prima biblioteca comunale d’Italia e la più antica che si sia conservata perfettamente fino ai giorni nostri. Detiene 340 manoscritti alcuni dei quali assai noti per la raffinatezza delle loro miniature. L’ex complesso francescano, oltre alla biblioteca malatestiana, contiene la Biblioteca Comunale, la “Piiana”, biblioteca privata di PioVII con 5.000 opere di grande valore, il Museo lapidario nel lungo corridoio di accesso alla biblioteca malatestiana e in ambienti adiacenti, che dall’inizio del ‘900 raccoglie resti architettonici e decorativi, lapidi ed iscrizioni (prevalentemente di età malatestiana).Certamente dello stesso periodo è l’attiguo Chiostro di San Francesco, ad arcate semicircolari in marmo con capitelli variamente ornati con i simboli araldici del signore di Cesena. All’interno di questo antico complesso conventuale francescano, ha sede il Museo Archeologico, in cui sono raccolti oggetti, documenti e monumenti dell’età preistorica, romana, medievale, provenienti dal nostro territorio. Ripartendo dalla Biblioteca Malatestiana, attraverso la caratteristica via Zeffirino Re, si giunge in piazza del Popolo, dove si può ammirare la bella Fontana Masini (1591) e il Palazzo Comunale iniziato nel 1359 dal Cardinale Albornoz e trasformato nel corso dei secoli.Costruzione possente, è ingentilita dalla loggetta veneziana (recentemente restaurata) e dal possente torrione fatto erigere nel 1466 da Paolo II, secondo il progetto di Matteo Nuti. All’interno di questa struttura è ospitato il Museo di Scienze Naturali nel quale sono esposti animali naturalizzati, minerali e strumenti didattico-scientifici. Attiguo al museo e precisamente all’interno del Parco della Rimembranza è in fase di allestimento un Orto Botanico. Il parco fu inaugurato nel 1924, come giardino della città. Nel 1944 venne scavato, sotto al colle, un rifugio antiaereo i cui ingressi sono ancora visibili dal viale. Attualmente è meta di passeggiate e attività sportive. Il parco circonda la Rocca Malatestiana alla quale si arriva salendo la scalinata che costeggia il Palazzo comunale e le vie Malatesta Novello e Ordelaffi. It contains 340 manuscripts, some of which are noteworthy for their refined detail in miniature.The former Franciscan complex not only contains the biblioteca malatestiana but also the Biblioteca Comunale (Community library); the “Piiana” - the private library of PioVII with 5000 valuable works; the Museo lapidario in the long corridor which leads to the biblioteca malatestiana and in the adjacent surroundings there are nineteenth century architectural and decorative remains, tombstones and inscriptions (mainly from age malatestiana). From the same period is the adjacent Chiostro di San Francesco with semicircular marble arches with ornate capitals which have heraldic symbols of the lord of Cesena. Inside this old Franciscan convent complex is the Archaeological Museum which contains a collection of objects, documents and monuments dating from the prehistoric, roman and medieval times all originating from our area. Leaving the Biblioteca Malatestiana and crossing the characteristic Via Zeffirino Re, we reach the Piazza del Popolo where there is the beautiful Masini Fountain (1591) and the Palazzo

una posizione strategica in cima al monte Sterlino, domina la vallata e tutto il territorio circostante.L’origine della prima rocca si fa addirittura risalire al periodo della dominazione bizantina. In essa soggiornò Federico Barbarossa che la fortificò, costruendovi anche una grande torre, nella quale sembra abbia trovato rifugio, dopo la battaglia di Legnano, la moglie Beatrice. Di questa rocca più antica, spostata rispetto all’attuale verso sud-est, oggi è ancora possibile osservare alcuni resti. Alla rocca cesenate legò il proprio nome Cia degli Ordelaffi, moglie di Francesco, signore di Forlì e di Cesena, che con leggendario coraggio seppe opporsi alle truppe del cardinale Albornoz inviato in Italia per riconquistare le terre dello stato pontificio. La Rocca che oggi possiamo ammirare nella sua interezza, innalzata più a ponente rispetto all’antica, fu iniziata da Galeotto Malatesta intorno al 1380 e poi continuata da Carlo e da Malatesta Novello, che la abbellì avvalendosi dell’opera di Matteo Nuti. Essa è costituita da un’ampia cinta muraria a forma di pentagono all’interno della quale si innalzano i due torrioni “maschio” e “femmina”. All’interno dei torrioni è stato allestito il Museo di Storia dell’Agricoltura, uno dei maggiori musei di archeologia rurale in ambito regionale. Raccoglie oltre 1.000 pezzi, per lo più di epoca ottocentesca e dell’inizio del ‘900, relativi alla vita e al lavoro dei campi. Uscendo dal Parco e costeggiando il Viale Mazzoni si arriva alla Chiesa di San Domenico. L’imponente complesso religioso ospitava un convento, poi soppresso. L’interno è ricco di pregevoli opere d’arte fra cui i dipinti di Cristoforo Serra, del Sacchi, di Cristoforo Savolini, del Cignani e di altri artisti del ‘600 e del ‘700.Ritornando nella piazza Almerici, antistante la Biblioteca Malatestiana, troviamo il Palazzo del Ridotto, con la sua possente struttura quattrocentesca e la statua bronzea di papa Pio VI, opera del cesenate Francesco Callegari. Di fronte al Palazzo del Ridotto sorge la Chiesa del Suffragio che custodisce una pala d’altare (1750) particolarmente interessante di Corrado Giaquinto e un organo datato 1761. Proseguendo lungo corso Mazzini e girando in Via Strinati si giunge alla Chiesa di Sant’Agostino, esempio di architettura settecentesca. L’interno è pregevole

Teatro Comunale A. Bonci

Comunale which was started in 1359 by the cardinal of Albornoz and transformed throughout the years.An imposing structure, it is refined by the Venetian lodges (recently restored) and by the huge tower which Paul II had erected in 1466 in compliance with Matteo Nuti’s project. Inside this structure is the Natural Science Museum where animals, minerals and scientific instruments are on show. Beside the museum and right inside the Remembrance Park there is the Botanical Garden, now undergoing reconstruction work.The park was inaugurated in 1924 as a garden for the city. In 1944 an air-raid shelter was dug under. the hill and its entrances can still be seen from the street. Nowadays it is used for walks and sporting activities.The park encircles the Malatestiana Fortress which is reached by going up the steps which run alongside the Palazzo Comunale, Malatesta Novello street and Ordelaffi street. Among the many fortresses which add to the beauty of Romagna, this one in Cesena is one of the most beautiful and impressive.Situated in a strategic position on top of Mount Sterlino, it dominates the valley and all the surrounding territory The origins of the first fortress date back to the time of the Byzantine rule.In this fortress lived Federico Barbarossa who fortified it adding a great tower where his wife Beatrice took refuge

con decorazioni e dipinti tra cui opere del pittore cesenate Giuseppe Milani e una tavola ovale cinquecentesca di Gerolamo Genga. Ritornando sul corso Mazzini, in Piazza Pia, troviamo la Cattedrale nella quale si può ammirare la cappella della Madonna del Popolo, affrescata da Corrado Giaquinto. Fiancheggiando la cattedrale si giunge in corso Garibaldi dove si affaccia il settecentesco Palazzo dell’O.I.R.. Di fronte c’è Piazza della Libertà e dietro di essa le viuzze della Valdoca, uno dei più antichi quartieri della città. Lungo il corso Garibaldi si trova anche il Palazzo che ospita la Pinacoteca della Cassa di Risparmio di Cesena con una pregevole collezione di dipinti antichi (è visitabile previa prenotazione negli orari di apertura dell’Istituto) e la Chiesa dei Servi, le cui origini risalgono agli ultimi anni del 1300. L’attuale chiesa risale alla metà del 1700. Di notevole interesse è il dipinto seicentesco di Carlo Saraceni raffigurante S. Carlo Borromeo.Fiancheggiando la chiesa e proseguendo lungo la Via Aldini si trova a destra il complesso del Centro Culturale San Biagio, un ex convento dalle pregevoli forme architettoniche, di recente restaurato. Sede di antico monastero, dalle origini e vicende alquanto oscure, conserva invece tracce molto suggestive della ristrutturazione avvenuta nella seconda fase del dominio malatestiano nella loggia e nella loggetta del chiostro piccolo. Oggi il complesso del San Biagio ospita istituti culturali dalle attrezzature altamente specializzate. Di notevole importanza il Centro Cinema che comprende una sala cinema, una sala multimediale con punti video anche individuali, una biblioteca specializzata in arte - musica - spettacolo, una ricchissima videoteca e il Museo dell’Immagine dove sono conservati archivi privati di autori cinematografici con soggetti e sce-neggiature originali, fotografie di scena, recensioni su centinaia di film di produzione nazionale e straniera. Ricordiamo anche il Centro Provinciale Teatro Ragazzi, che ogni anno organizza spettacoli per le scuole di tutta la Provincia e il Centro Interuniversitario di Ricerca in Filosofia e Fondamenti della Fisica degli atenei di Bologna e Urbino (www.magnet-world.com/icephy) che organizza convegni, corsi per insegnanti, seminari, scuole estive e promuove con frequenza annuale

after the battle of Legnano. From this older fortress which lies to the south-west of the present-day one, it is still possible to see some remains of the former fortress. Even the name of Cia degli Ordelaffi is linked to the fortress in Cesena. She was the wife of Francesco, lord of Forlì and Cesena and with her legendary courage opposed the troops cardinal Albornoz sent to Italy to re-conquer the land of the Papal state.The fortress which we can admire today in its entirety, a little bit to the west in comparison with the old one was began by Galeotto Malatesta around 1380 and then continued by Carlo and Malatesta Novello who embellished it availing themselves of the workmanship of Matteo Nuti.This is made up of a large pentagonal surrounding wall inside which are two towers: “Male” and “Female”. Inside the towers is the Museo di storia dell’Agricoltura (History of Agriculture Museum), one of the best rural archaeology museums. It includes more than 1000 pieces referring to the way of life and farm work mainly from the eighteenth century and the beginning of the nineteenth century.Going out of the park and following Viale Mazzoni we arrive at the Church of San Domenico. This impressive religious building once was the site of a convent which was later abolished. The inside is full of valuable works of art among which are paintings by Cristoforo Serra, del Sacchi, Cristoforo Savolini, del Cignani and by other sixteenth and seventeenth artists.Going back towards Piazza Almerici, opposite the Biblioteca Malatestiana, we find the Palazzo del Ridotto. A powerful fifteenth century structure with a bronze statue of Pope Pio VI, it is the work of Francesco Callegari from Cesena.In front of the Palazzo del Ridotto is the Chiesa del Suffragio where a particularly interesting altar-piece by Corrado Giaquinto is kept and also an organ dated 1761. Continuing along Corso Mazzini and turning into Via Strinati we reach the Chiesa di Sant’Agostino, an example of seventeenth century architecture. Inside it is beautifully decorated with paintings which include works of the artist Giuseppe Milani (from Cesena) and also a sixteenth century oval table by Gerolamo Genga.Going back on to Via Mazzini, in Piazza Pia we find the Cathedral in which the chapel of the Madonna del Popolo with frescos by Corrado Giaquinto can be admired. Going along the side of the Cathedral we reach Corso Garibaldi, looked onto by the Palazzo dell’O.I.R..

Nel complesso si trova anche la Pinacoteca che comprende una sezione di arte antica con opere di particolare pregio, fra le altre tele di B. Carrari, A. Aleotti, S. Sacco, C. Cagnacci, Sassoferrato, C. Cignani, G. Milani; dei cesenati A. Gianfanti, P. Grilli, G. Barbieri e una sezione di arte moderna con opere di maestri contemporanei, Cappelli, Sughi, Caldari, Piraccini, Bocchini, Veronesi, Guttuso, Schifano, Cagli, Greco, Mafai. Ha sede inoltre l’Istituto Musicale “Arcangelo Corelli” che ha la funzione di scuola di formazione e di educazione musicale e possiede una fonoteca dotata di oltre 10.000 fra dischi e compact e una biblioteca, il nucleo più antico della scuola, che comprende oltre 6.000 partiture. Proseguendo dalla Chiesa dei Servi giungiamo in piazza Guidazzi su cui si affaccia il Teatro Comunale Alessandro Bonci. Costruito sull’antico Teatro Spada, i lavori del nuovo teatro iniziarono il 5 Agosto 1843, secondo il progetto dell’architetto Vincenzo Ghinelli. L’inaugurazione e l’apertura avvennero tre anni dopo, il 15 Agosto 1846, con la rappre-sentazione di due opere: la “Maria di Rohan” e “I Lombardi”. Da questo momento il Teatro di Cesena si distingue per la rappresentazione delle migliori

Opposite there is Piazza della Libertà and behind this the little streets of Valdoca-one of the oldest areas of the town. Along Corso Garibaldi is also the building which holds the Gallery of the Cassa di Risparmio di Cesena with a valuable collection of old paintings (visits must be booked within the opening hours of the Institute) and also the Chiesa dei Servi whose origins date back to the end of the 1300s. The present church dates back to the mid 1700s.Of noteworthy interest is the seventeenth century painting by Carlo Saraceni portraying San Carlo Borromeo.Bordering the church and going along Via Aldini, on the right is the Centro Culturale San Biagio.An ex-convent with important architectural forms, it has recently been restored. Once a monastery, of somewhat obscure origins, traces of restructuring in the second phase of the Malatestian dominion in the lodges and the cloister’s smaller lodges can be seen. Today the San Biagio Complex contains cultural institutes with highly specialised equipment.Of noteworthy importance is the Centro Cinema which has a cinema, multimedia room with video points (also individual), a library specialised in art - music - theatre, video library and the Museo dell’Immagine where private archives of cinema writers including original film-scripts, photographs and reviews of hundreds of national and overseas produced films. Not to be forgotten is the Centro Provinciale Teatro Ragazzi which each year organizes for schools of the province.Also there is the Centro Interuniversitario di Ricerca in Filosofia e Fondamenti della Fisica (Interuniversity centre for Research into foundations and philosophy of physics-part of the University of Bologna) and Urbino (www.magnet-world.com/icephy) which organizes congresses, courses for teachers, seminars, summer schools and annually promotes the Scuola Superiore di Studi di Fondamenti e Filosofia della Fisica (Foundations and Philosophy of Physics High School). There is also the library of the Societa Italiana di Logica e Filosofia delle Scienze - S.I.L.F.S. (Italian Society for Logics and Philosophy of the Sciences) and the Centro Interdipartimentale di ricerca in Epistemologia e Storia delle Scienze “F. Enriques”. In the building there is also the Gallery which includes a section of old art of particular value. Among others, there are works by B. Carrari, A. Aleotti, S. Sacco, C. Cagnacci, Sassoferrato, C. Cignani, G. Milani, A. Gianfanti, P. Grilli, G. Barbieri and a section of modern works by contemporary masters such as Cappelli, Sughi, Caldari, Piraccini, Bocchini,

produzioni liriche e drammatiche interpretate dai più valenti artisti. Ma è soprattutto come teatro lirico che il Bonci eccelle.Nella sala adiacente al foyer è stato allestito il Museo del Teatro che conserva la documentazione della storia secolare del Teatro e della musica a Cesena. Fuori dal centro storico, un luogo particolarmente suggestivo è l’Abbazia della Madonna del Monte che sorge sull’antico colle Spaziano. Raggiungibile in macchina, attraverso la Porta Valzania, oppure a piedi, per la via delle Scalette, sorge su di un poggio dal quale si gode una bellissima vista della città e della pianura cesenate. La prima chiesa fu fatta costruire da San Mauro Vescovo verso il 930, in seguito demolita per costruirne un’altra più grande. L’opera di riedificazione della chiesa e del monastero vengono iniziate solo nel XV e nel XVI secolo. Quasi tutta la chiesa fu ricostruita: le navate laterali furono trasformate in cappelle e si edificò la “cappella grande della Madonna”. La cupola attuale è stata in parte abbassata e rifatta intorno al 1771-72 da Pietro Carlo Borboni. Altri restauri furono portati a compimento nel 1914. La chiesa si presenta spaziosa e solenne, ed in particolare si possono ammirare nella prima cappella di destra una “Annunciazione” di Bartolomeo Coda e nella terza la “Presentazione al Tempio” di Francesco Raibolini detto il Francia, che è sicuramente il dipinto più pregevole e noto. Salito lo scalone, che porta dalla parte inferiore della Basilica al presbiterio, ci si trova sotto la cupola, affrescata nel XVIII da Giuseppe Milani con la rappresentazione dell’Assunzione della Madonna. Bellissimo dietro l’altare maggiore è il Coro Ligneo opera di Giuseppe Scalvini (1560-63). Patrimonio insigne dell’Abbazia è la bellissima collezione di ex-voto, una raccolta davvero straordinaria di 690 pezzi, recentemente restaurati e di vario valore appartenenti ad epoche diverse. All’interno della Cripta è da notare il sarcofago romano di Seia Marcellina, probabilmente la tomba di San Mauro vescovo, oggi adibito ad altare, ed una croce in pietra del secolo IX. Una visita meritano anche la Sacrestia di sotto che contiene intatto il suo aspetto cinquecentesco, come pure la Sacrestia di sopra. It has a listening library boasting more than 10,000 records and CDs and a library, the oldest part of the school, which contains more than 6,000 scores.Continuing on from the Chiesa dei Servi we reach Piazza Guidazzi which is overlooked by the Teatro Comunale Alessandro Bonci.Built on the old Teatro Spada the work on the new theatre began on the 5th of August 1843 in compliance with the architect Vincenzo Ghinelli’s project.The inauguration and the opening came three years later on the 15th of august 1846 with the performances of two operas: “Maris di Rohan” and “I Lombardi”.From that time the theatre in Cesena his become a distinguished place due to its wonderful productions interpreted by the most talented artists. But above all it is as an opera theatre that the Bonci excels.In the room next to the foyer there is the Museo del Teatro (Theatre Museum) which contains documents about the centuries old history of music and theatre in Cesena.A particularly evocative place outside the historic centre is the Abbazia della Madonna del Monte which lies on the hill known as Spaziano. Reached by car across the Porta Valzania or on foot through Via delle Scalette it rises up on a bank from which there is beautiful view of the city and of the lowlands in the Cesena area. San Mauro the bishop had the church built around 930 and then it was demolished in order to build a new one.Rebuilding work did not start until the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries.Nearly all the church was rebuilt: the naves along the sides were transformed into chapels and the “great chapel of the Madonna” was built. The present dome was partly lowered and re-made in 1771-72 by Pietro Carlo Borboni.Other restoration works were brought to completion in 1914. The church is spacious and solemn and in particular an “Annunciation” by Bartolomeo Coda in the first chapel in the right is to be admired as is the “Presentation in the Temple” by Francesco Raibolini which is certainly the most valuable and noteworthy painting.At the top of the stairs which leads from the lower part of the Basilica to the presbytery we find ourselves under the dome decorated with nineteenth century frescos by Giuseppe Milani which portray the annunciation to the Madonna.

Behind the main altar is the beautiful Coro Ligneo by Guiseppe Scalvini (1560-63). Of great importance to the abbey’s heritage is the collection of votive offerings, a collection of over 690 pieces recently restored of varying value and varying in age.Inside the crypt is the Roman sarcofaghus of Seia Marcellina, probably the tomb of San Mauro the bishop nowadays used as an altar and a stone cross from the ninth century. The sacristy below which still retains its 1500s look as does the sacristy above both deserve a visit. The convent beside the church which was entirely rebuilt in the eighteenth century still retains part of the small cloister with elegant stone columns and also the large cloister with a large monumental well from the second half of the sixteenth century (built by Alessandro corsi da Venezia) from the old construction. A large square with a garden round the basilica makes a welcome resting point with a magnificent view of the whole city. On the opposite hill is the Convento dei Cappuccini. It is of fifteenth century origin even if work over the years have changed its appearance. Inside there is the magnificent

In direzione opposta, verso il mare, ed esattamente nella Frazione di San Giorgio a circa 6 Km da Cesena, è stata allestita una prima sezione del Museo della Centuriazione, nella sede del quartiere, dove sono esposti documenti e foto che testimoniano la presenza della Centuriazione romana. Questa si è conservata fino ad oggi ed è infatti ancora visibile la divisione ortogonale dei campi divisi da fossi e strade. Il progetto prevede di destinare una centuria a Museo all’aperto. Ampie zone verdi circondano la città, alcune attrezzate a parco pubblico, altre con impianti sportivi. Tra queste ultime, una delle piu vaste è quella “dell’ippodromo”, dove oltre a campi da tennis, piscina, Palazzetto dello Sport, si trova l’Ippodromo Internazionale del Savio, vanto di Cesena e uno dei più importanti d’Europa.

CESENAE LA GASTRONOMIACesena è una città ricca di memorie storiche ed artistiche, attaccata alle antiche abitudini culturali che si tramandano di generazione in generazione. Da sottolineare sono l’amore e il gusto per la buona tavola, ricca di piatti tipici e tradizionali. Se passionalità, impetuosità, irruenza, ma soprattutto sincerità, schiettezza, cordialità si dice che contraddistinguano il vero romagnolo, certamente ne caratterizzano la cucina, vigorosa nei sapori, ricca e sostanziosa, genuina e dall’aspetto invitante. Le minestre, tagliatelle, pappardelle, cappelletti, passatelli, garganelli, strozzapreti, per indicarne qualcuna, rappresentano le più importanti specialità gastronomiche. Confenzionate alcune con la tradizionale “spoja”, altre con parmigiano e pane grattugiato, servite con ottimo brodo di cappone e manzo, oppure con ragù, costituiscono il piatto forte di ogni buon pranzo della cucina romagnola. Anche le pietanze ricche di carne di manzo, di vitello, di pollame, cotte arrosto o in graticola, costituiscono un ottimo piatto. Ma la specialità romagnola, e cesenate in particolare,

The villa is surrounded by a beautiful park from which there is a beautiful view over the city. Today it is possible to visit the room with the objects, books and the things which were dearest to the poet in the last years of his life. About 6 km from Lizzano in a hall in the Quartiere di Borello, documents, photos and reports are on show of the founding part of the Museo delle Miniere (Mine Museum) which will eventually be moved for good to the Villaggio Minerario (mining village) of Formignano. In the opposite direction towards the sea in the hamlet of San Giorgio about 6km from Cesena are the beginnings of the Museo della Centuriazione (Coin Museum) where there are documents and photos on show which give evidence to the presence of the Romans. To this day the right angled divisions of the fields into ditches and streets can still be seen. The project intends to donate an century (Roman coin) to the open-air museum.Extensive park-land surrounds the city: some of them public parks; others catering for sporting activities. Among the sporting grounds, one of the largest is the park “dell ’ippodromo” where besides tennis courts, a swimming pool and the Palazzetto dello Sport, there is l ’Ippodromo Internazionale del Savio - one of the most important sporting grounds in Europe.

If passion, impetuousness, vehemence, but above all sincerity, straight-forwardness and warmth distinguish the Romagnolo character then the cuisine too is characterised by these things: vigorous in flavour, rich and substantial, wholesome and inviting.Soups, tagliatelle, pappardelle, cappelletti, passatelli, garganelli and strozzapreti, to name but a few, represent the most important gastronomic specialities.Served with the traditional “spoja”, or with Parmesan and grated bread, the best of romagnolo beef stock or meat sauce, they go to make up the main dish of every good

che si è conservata intatta nel tempo, è la piadina, la “pida”, tanto che ogni angolo della città e le principali vie che conducono al mare o verso le colline, “brulicano” di chioschi, immediatamente riconoscibili, dove si confeziona questa speciale leccornia. È una schiacciata composta di farina, acqua e sale, tirata sottile col mattarello e fatta cuocere al fuoco ardente delle braci su una teglia di terracotta. Si gusta soprattutto col prosciutto, salame, formaggi, ma si accompagna bene ad ogni secondo piatto. Tuttavia la piadina rappresenta qualcosa che trascende il semplice alimento per assumere valore di simbolo, in quanto racchiude in sè il segno caratteristico dell’ospitalità romagnola. Da non dimanticare sono inoltre i dolci: la ciambella, la zuppa inglese, le castagnole (il tipico dolce di carnevale). Questi piatti ricchi di sapore, sani e vigorosi si accompagnano ai buoni vini che la Romagna produce abbondantemente. Cesena, con le colline vicine, è una delle migliori zone per la produzione di vini tipici, come l’albana, che nel tipo dolce e profumato è molto indicato per il dessert, il sangiovese il cui nome in dialetto romagnolo “sanzvés” si fa derivare da Sanctus Zeus, la maggiore divinità della mitologia greca, la cagnina, di colore rosso intenso, di sapore molto gradevole che è il tipico vino delle caldarroste e il trebbiano, vino bianco di colore paglierino, che pare derivi il proprio nome dalla esclamazione “trés bien” “trés bien” con cui i soldati francesi salutavano questo vino quando veniva loro servito.

But the Romagnolo speciality, from Cesena in particular is the piadina.It has remained intact throughout the years so much so that on every corner of the city or on the streets which lead from the sea to the hills there is a kiosk immediately recognisable where this special delicacy is sold. It is a flat bread made of flour water and salt rolled thinly and cooked over hot coals. It is served mainly with ham, salami and cheese but it accompanies well every main course. Nonetheless the piadina represents something which surpasses a simple foodstuff as it contains the sign of Romagnolo hospitality. Not forgetting of course the desserts: la ciambella, la zuppa inglese (trifle) and the typical carnival dessert, le castagnole. These rich, healthy, hearty dishes are accompanied by the good wines which Romagna produces in abundance.Cesena with its nearby hills is one of the best areas for wine production like albana, which in its sweeter version goes very well with a dessert.Or sangiovese whose name in the Romagnolo dialect “sanzvés” is derived from Sanctus Zeus - the greatest god of Greek mythology.Cagnina with its intense red colour and very pleasant flavour is the typical wine to accompany roasts.Trebbiano is a straw coloured white wine whose name is derived from the exclamation “trés bien” “trés bien” of French soldiers when this wine was served to them.

WALKS IN THE HILLSSURROUNDING CESENAThe little towns and villages which pop up on the hills overlooking the Adriatic coast form an interesting destination due to their artistic and monumental beauty as well as for their landscape which has been characterised by the harvesting of fruit, grapes and olives. Longiano is noteworthy for the Malatestiana Fortress, which represents one of the most important and well preserved examples of a fortified installation.Also for the Sanctuary of the Holy Crucifix with the adjoining convent of the Frati Minori Francescani and for the Teatro Comunale “E. Petrella”, an elegant example of a traditional Italian theatre. There is too the important national collection of contemporary art of the “Tito Balestra” foundation, held near the Malatestiana Fortress.

Meritano una visita i piccoli centri di Roncofreddo, Monteleone, Sorrivoli, Montecodruzzo che hanno conservato nel tempo le caratteristiche tipiche degli antichi borghi rurali medievali, Sogliano, capoluogo dello storico Montefeltro romagnolo, Borghi e la frazione di San Giovanni in Galilea, con i resti dell’antico castello medievale, sede del Museo e Biblioteca Renzi che raccoglie interessanti reperti villanoviani, romani e ceramiche rinascimentali e San Mauro, paese natale di Giovanni Pascoli, dove è possibile visitare la casa natale del poeta. Tra i centri della vallata del Savio si segnala Mercato Saraceno che una antica leggenda vuole fondato dai pirati saraceni sbarcati sulla costa adriatica nei pressi di Cesenatico e risaliti poi lungo la valle del Savio.

To the tourist exploring the hills of Romagna, Montiano offers not only a beautiful panorama (a real balcony over the sea), but also an itinerary rich in historical, cultural and gastronomic experiences. Of particular interest is the Crucifix held in the parochial church of Saint Agatha. Inside, the beautiful altar-piece by G. Francesco Modigliani which portrays the Madonna and Child with Saints Agatha and Lucy and the frescoes on the dome by the artist from Cesena, Costantino Guidi, are to be admired.The small towns of Roncofreddo, Monteleone, Sorrivoli and Montecodruzzo are all worth visiting and have preserved the typical characteristics of rural medieval villages. Also worth a visit are Sogliano, main town of the historic Montefeltro, Borghi and the hamlet of San Giovanni in Galilea with its remains of the old medieval castle. Here also is the Renzo library and museum which has a collection of interesting Roman reports and renaissance ceramics. In San Mauro it is possible to visit the birthplace of the poet, Giovanni Pascoli.Among the little villages of the Savio valley, of particular note is Mercato Saraceno. Si segnala la monumentale Chiesa romanica della Pieve del SS. Cosma e Damiano. Non distante, lungo la strada provinciale, è possibile raggiungere la Pieve di Montesorbo dedicata a S. Maria Annunziata, Palazzo Dolcini, progettato negli anni ‘20, in stile Liberty purissimo, realizzato in ceramica faentina di straordinario effetto cromatico. Risalendo la vallata si giunge a Sarsina, che costituisce senza dubbio una delle mete più interessanti dell’intera Romagna per il Museo Archeologico nazionale, che raccoglie nelle sue sale una ricchissima ed articolata testimonianza dell’importanza e floridezza di questa cittadina in epoca romana. Di notevole pregio sono la Basilica Cattedrale del secolo XI, dedicata al culto di San Vicinio, meta di pellegrinaggi, il Museo Diocesano di Arte Sacra, il monumento funerario di Aulo Murcio Obulacco ed il monumento a Plauto. Proseguendo si incontra Bagno di Romagna (conosciuto ed apprezzato centro terrmale già in epoca romana) che si segnala per la Basilica di S.M. Assunta ed il Palazzo del Capitano. Di qui tante sono le mete raggiungibili: il Lago Pontini, il Monte Fumaiolo, le sorgenti del Tevere, il Lago di Acquapartita e, sul Colle Corzano, il Santuario dedicato alla Madonna. Merita una visita particolare, per il suo grande valore ambientale e naturalistico, la Foresta della Lama. Al suo interno, incastonata come una gemma, Sassofratino, riserva naturale integrale.Da Verghereto, ridente centro turistico a 800 metri sul livello del mare, si sale fino al Monte Fumaiolo ed al Monte Cormero, ambiente incontaminato i cui maestosi boschi fanno da corollario ad uno scenario veramente suggestivo dove in inverno è possibile praticare vari sport invernali.

BertinoroÈ molto conosciuta come città dell’ospitalità di cui è simbolo la Colonna delle Anella, una colonna in sasso del 1300 che porta 12 anelli, eretti da Guido del Duca e Arrigo Mainardi per mettere fine alle continue dispute che sorgevano fra le famiglie nobili del tempo e dare ospitalità ai forestieri che raggiungevano il paese. Alla colonna furono affissi tanti anelli quante erano le famiglie del posto: il forestiero che arrivava in paese e legava il suo cavallo ad un anello diveniva automaticamente ospite della famiglia cui l’anello apparteneva. Collected within its room is an extremely rich testimony to the importance and prosperity of this town in Roman times. Of notable value are the eleventh century Basilica Cattedrale a place of pilgrimage dedicated to the worship of San Vicinio, the Museo Diocesano di Arte Sacra (Diocesan Museum of Sacred Art), the funeral monument of Aulo Murcio Obulacco and the monument to Plautus.Continuing we arrive at Bagno di Romagna (known and appreciated in Roman times for its thermal baths) where of note is the Basilica di S.M. Assunta and the Palazzo del Capitano. From here many places can be reached: Lake Pontini, Mount Fumaiolo, the Sources of the Tiber, Lake Acquapartita and on the Colle Corzano, the Sanctuary dedicated to the Madonna. Worth a visit for its great natural and environmental value is the Foresta della Lama. Inside, set like a gem-stone, is Sassofratino a nature reserve.From Verghereto, a charming tourist centre 800m above sea level, we continue up towards Mount Fumaiolo and Mount Cormero.A very evocative area whose woods create a background to the beautiful landscape where in winter it is possible to perform various winter sports.

BertinoroThis place is well known as a city of hospitality whose symbol is the Colonna delle Anella (Column of the Rings).This is a thirteenth century stone column which has twelve rings. It was erected by Guido del Duca and Arrigo Mainardi to put an end to the continuous disputes between the noble families at that time and to provide hospitality for strangers who arrived in the town. One ring for each familiy of the place was affixed to the column. The stranger who arrived in the town tied his horse to a ring and automatically became a guest of the family whose ring he had chosen. Each year in September, the ancient rite is celebrated.

Nelle vicinanze sorge la Rocca Vescovile costruita intorno all’anno 1000 che oggi è sede del Museo dell’Arredo Sacro. Nei dintorni di Bertinoro si trovano la Pieve di San Donato a Polenta e Monte Maggio. Le Terme della Fratta sono ciò che rimane della antica borgata romana sorta per le sorgenti naturali di acque curative.

CesenaticoFin dai primi del 1300 diventa un porto di grande importanza. In seguito vengono fatti alcuni interventi di ristrutturazione e per uno di questi è incaricato nel 1502 Leonardo Da Vinci.Oggi ospita il Museo galleggiante della marineria dove sono esposti i prototipi delle barche dell’alto e medio Adriatico. Inoltre è visitabile il Museo Marino Moretti, casa natale del poeta romagnolo.

Mercoledì 26 SettembreVisita alla Biblioteca Malatestiana: prima biblioteca comunale d’Italia e l’unica al mondo, di tipo umanistico-conventuale, ad essersi conservata perfettamente in ogni sua parte e inserita dall’Unesco, nel giugno 2005, nel Registro Internazionale delle Memorie del Mondo.

Giovedì 27 SettembreVisita alla Rocca Malatestiana, una delle più imponenti della Romagna, con la ‘corte’ e due torrioni centrali, il ‘maschio’ e la ‘femmina’. Allestito in quest’ultimo, il Museo di Storia dell’Agricoltura offre ai visitatori uno spaccato sul mondo rurale romagnolo nel corso dei tempi.

Venerdì 28 Settembre Visita a Villa Silvia, a pochi km dal centro città, immersa nella natura, ospita il museo della musica meccanica, collezione unica ed originale di organetti d’epoca che ripropongono le note romantiche di musiche mai dimenticate.

Tutte le visite sono gratuite. Ritorno in Fiera previsto per le ore 18.30.

Wednesday 26 SeptemberTour of the Malatestiana Library: the first public library in Italy and the only humanist-monastery library in the world to be entirely and perfectly preserved. In June 2005, UNESCO added it to its Memory of the World Register.

Thursday 27 SeptemberTour of the Rocca Malatestiana, one of the most impressive in the Emilia-Romagna region, with its ‘court’ and two large central towers, the ‘Male’ and the ‘Female’. The latter houses the Museum of Agriculture, offering visitors a complete picture of rural life in Romagna throughout the ages.

Friday 28 September Tour of Villa Silvia, just a few kilometres from the town centre, and surrounded by nature. The Villa hosts the Mechanical Music Museum, a unique and original collection of ancient accordions, which play the romantic notes of unforgotten music.

All tours are free of charge. Return to the fair is scheduled for 6.30pm.
