    General information about ITU-R Recommendations

ITU-R Recommendations constitute a set of recommended technical and operatingstandards for radiocommunications, previously known as CCIR Recommendations. They

are the result of studies undertaken by Radiocommunication Study Groups on:

the use of the radio-frequency spectrum in terrestrial and space radiocommunicationincluding the use of satellite orbits

the characteristics and performance of radio systems (except the interconnection of radiosystems in public communication networks and the performance required for these

interconnections, which are included in ITU-T Recommendations)

    the operation of radio stations

the radiocommunication aspects of distress and safety matters.

The Recommendations are agreed upon by consensus of the membership. Their

implementation is not mandatory; however, as these standards are developed by expertsfrom government administrations and leading radiocommunication organizations from allover the world, they enjoy a high reputation and are implemented world-wide despite theirnon-binding character.

ITU-R Recommendations are divided into Series according to the subjects they cover, asfollows:

    Series Subject

BO Broadcasting-satellite service (sound and television)

    BR Sound and television recording

    BS Broadcasting service (sound)

    BT Broadcasting service (television)

    F Fixed service:

    IS Inter-service sharing and compatibility

M Mobile, radiodetermination, amateur and related satellite services:

    P Radiowave propagation

    RA Radioastronomy

    S Fixed-satellite service

    SA Space applications and meteorology

SF Frequency sharing between the fixed-satellite service and the fixed service

    SM Spectrum management techniques

    SNG Satellite news gathering

TF Time signals and frequency standards emissions

    V Vocabulary and related subjects

There are currently 676 ITU-R Recommendations in force, which have been published inEnglish, French and Spanish in the following Series Volumes or Fascicles:

1995 Series Fascicles - 88 new and 100 revised Recommendations approved by theRadiocommunication Assembly, 1995

1994 Series Volumes - 453 maintained Recommendations approved by previousRadiocommunication Assemblies/CCIR Plenary Assemblies

1992 RF Series - 1 maintained Recommendation, not subsequently republished

Volume III and Volume IX - Part 1, XVIIth Plenary Assembly of the CCIR(Dsseldorf,1990) - 34 maintained Recommendations, not subsequently republished.

In some cases specific Recommendations have also been published separately. All of theITU-R Recommendations currently in force have been included on this CD-ROM.

In addition, all of the ITU-R Recommendations in force are now available online, and can bedownloaded via the ITU World Wide Web server (http://www.itu.int). They are available in

both WinWord 2.0c and PostScript file formats. In early 1997 the Adobe Acrobat PDF

format will be added, which will eventually replace the PostScript version. Two onlineservices are provided:

ITU-R Recommendations Online - where payment of an annual subscription allows thecustomer to download any or all of the ITU-R Recommendations

ITU-R Electronic Bookshop - where individual Recommendations can be downloadedand paid for by credit card or an account.

New and revised ITU-R Recommendations will be put on the ITU World Wide Web serveras they are approved, so these online services may be viewed as a very useful adjunct tothe CD-ROM of ITU-R Recommendations. For further information about these onlineservices please contact the ITU Sales Service or visit the ITU Web site (http://www.itu.int).
