Chcesz skutecznie i szybko wzbogaciç swojà znajomoÊç s∏ownictwa angielskiego?
Przygotowujesz si´ do egzaminu? Chcesz swobodnie podyskutowaç z przyjació∏mi

The Big Bang theory
A: Good afternoon, dear listeners. Today our guest is Scott Jackson, a professor ofastronomy at Johns Hopkins University. Professor Jackson, we appreciate that youtook the time to visit us today.
B: I am very happy to be here. Thank you.A: Professor, could you explain, in layman’s terms, what is the Big Bang theory?B: The Big Bang theory is the theory which says that the universe started from a
gigantic cosmic explosion about 10 to 20 billion years ago and ever since it’s beenexpanding. Prior to the explosion there was nothing. Space, time, matter andenergy came into existence during the first moment of time.
A: What does it mean that the universe is expanding?B: It means that distant galaxies are travelling away from us. Their velocity is
proportional to their distance, which means that those galaxies twice as far fromthe Milky Way move twice as fast.
A: Is the Solar System expanding as well?B: No, it is not. The force of gravity keeps us “anchored”. Gravity overcomes the
Universe’s expansion. A: Why did the Big Bang happen?B: Oh, it will always be a difficult question, no matter how hard the scientists work
at it. But it doesn’t mean that they should stop trying.

The era of space exploration began in 1957 with the lift-off of the USSR’s Sputnik 1,which became the first _____________________ (1) in space. The space explorationwas driven by the _____________________ (2) between Russia and the USA. Forroughly two decades these two world powers competed for scientific superiority andmilitary strength through _____________________ (3) and _____________________(4) spaceflights, space _____________________ (5) and _____________________ (6). The response to Sputnik came four months later with the ________ (7) of the USA’s own Earth orbiter, Explorer 1. The space race continued with various spaceprograms including the Apollo moon landing in 1961. While some believe that the _____________________ (8) was the end, or apex, of the Cold War, others thinkthat the end came with the Apollo-Soyuz mission of 1975, the first spaceflightmanaged jointly by Russia and the USA.

A concept formulated by Anglo-Saxon biologists that treats the Earth as an organicwhole, whose surface is shaped by living matter, enjoys a great popularity in contemporary natural history and among environmentalists. This concept is calledthe Gaia hypothesis after the Greek earth goddess. The hypothesis proposes that allliving things have a regulatory effect on the geology of each planet on which theyappear. The Gaia hypothesis is supported by a number of facts. It is, for instance, believed that extensive masses of organic sedimentary rocks, which have beendeposited for millions of years on the ocean floors, affect the movement ofcontinental plates and continental collision, which in turn results in such processesas catastrophic earthquakes, volcanic activity, creation of mountain ranges orformation of new continents, islands and peninsulas. The Great Barrier Reef whichstretches for 2,600 kilometres along Australia’s northeastern coast affects not onlyAustralia and Oceania but also the southern hemisphere. The reef is composed ofmillions of tiny organisms, in particular of coral polyps that form its structure.Preserving the health of Mother Earth is one of the greatest responsibilities of man. The lack of respect that man has had for Gaia is shown through the damage done byindustry, agriculture and fishery and may prove catastrophic and irreversible also forhumanity itself.
