Welcome to BEST

If you work in the built environment sector, you know these are challenging, but exciting times. BEST (Built Environment Sustainability Training) is here to help you meet those challenges by bringing you up to speed with the latest technologies, techniques and regulations in your field.

Our subsidised, accredited courses are delivered in a range of flexible, innovative ways – at times and places to suit you.

Drawing on academic expertise in the Welsh School of Architecture at Cardiff University, and delivered by leading training providers, BEST’s courses deliver transferable qualifications and skills in new technologies, applications and processes that will boost your prospects, help your company’s profitability, future-proof the built environment and enhance Wales’ reputation as the frontrunner of sustainability in the UK and EU.

The courses are available to professionals in disciplines across the built environment sector, either living or working in one of the Convergence areas of Wales. We are especialy keen to involve women and people over 50.

How to use this prospectusThe prospectus is a catalogue of courses offered through the BEST programme. They are divided into three sections: Design and Plan; Build; and Manage and Use, as well as two introductory courses. Each course entry includes a brief description, its level, the number of credits it carries, and the number of hours involved.

Introductory

The ‘green’ economy in Wales is significant and growing. Commercial opportunities and increasing competition is driving the need for companies to develop their sustainability capabilities. BEST’s Introductory Courses are designed to raise awareness of sustainable practice and technologies and emerging business opportunities among the professional built environment workforce; encouraging the adoption of new and more sustainable ways of working.

Who is this training for?These courses are designed for anyone with an interest in the broad issues of sustainability in the built environment, the business benefits of the ‘green economy’ and an introduction to BIM across the sector. They are suitable to all construction and design professionals and all relevant professionals throughout the supply chain.

Sustainability in the built environmentThis awareness-raising module will help participants to understand how new technologies and sustainable practices can help their businesses develop. It will focus on the five key themes of the BEST Programme and will provide a pathway into the accredited training courses.

Level: IntroductorySelf-directed on-line

An introduction to building information modelling (BIM) This course has been designed to increase awareness and understanding of BIM across all three stages of the construction process: Design and Plan, Build, Manage and Use. The course will focus on the five key research themes of the BEST Programme: construction, energy, existing build, water and waste; and will provide a pathway into the accredited courses.

Design and Plan

Choices made at the Design and Plan stage of developments will have significant consequences for the long term sustainability of the built environment. The sustainable design and plan of new buildings not only helps to minimise carbon emissions and raw material use, it can create a built environment that is more sustainable and resilient for the future.

Who is this training for?These courses will be suitable for all design and construction professionals including: architects, building services engineers, civil engineers, , chartered surveyors, contractors, designers, ecologists, environmental professionals, estate managers, green deal providers, housing managers, landlords, landscape architects, land owners, sustainability officers, urban designers and all relevant professionals throughout the supply chain.

Air tightness and active moisture managementThe course is designed to outline and detail the vital role air tightness plays in the design of low energy and low carbon constructions for construction and design professionals.

CQFW Level: 4 50 hours / 5 credits

Sustainable architecture: retrofitting for climate change adaptation The course will enable participants to apply the techniques of low carbon design and energy efficiency to retrofit projects identified using key performance indicators (KPIs) to maximise the impact of sustainable design.

Sustainable architecture: the sustainability jigsaw and how it affects youThis course will enable participants to manage and prioritise legislative and regulatory requirements, giving an understanding of the role of planning, BREEAM, Building Regulations and The Code for Sustainable Homes in the construction process.

13 Design and Plan

Sustainable architecture: Passivhaus and other systemsFocusing on detailing aspects of Passivhaus design: glazing and shading, airtightness, orientation, ventilation etc., this course will give participants an understanding of the Passivhaus approach to design and its use in the UK.

CQFW Level: Level 520 hours / 2 credits*

Sustainable architecture: refurbishment and performance for pre-1919 buildingsThis course will focus on current and proposed legislative frameworks and their practical use in Wales, focusing on Cadw’s conservation principles, policies and guidance and with reference to variations in English Heritage’s approach.


Sustainable architecture: the place of homeThis course will demonstrate to participants an awareness of different approaches and models of sustainable communities, the impact of low-carbon design and the principles of urban design and the qualities of successful places.


Whole-life costing procurement and contractsSet in the context of the Sustainable Development remit of the Welsh Government and its impact on the design and construction sctors, this course will describe the principles and benefits of a whole life costing approach, distinguishing between initial costs, future costs over the life of the built asset and opportunity costs.


Planning for community and neighbourhood-scale renewable energyThe course is designed to provide planners and architects with an understanding of the requirements and issues around community-scale renewable energy developments so that they may better engage with developers, engineers and communities.

Collaborating to deliver sustainable urban drainage and water-sensitive urban designThe course will develop the participant’s understanding and benefits of Sustainable Urban Drainage (SuDS) and Water Sensitive Urban Design (WSUD) approaches, multi-discipline design, planning aspects and community engagement.

Green roofs concept and designThis course will outline the concept, design, operation and maintenance of green roofs, focusing on new build and retrofit systems.

Integrated catchment managementThis course supports Catchment Management Plan approaches being taken by Dwr Cymry Welsh Water and Natural Resources Wales and will upskill designers and the supply chain working within this new regulatory approach.

Designing out wasteThe purpose of this course is to enable professional architects and allied staff to be able to successfully design out waste by understanding how to prevent waste at design levels, how to improve design through material choices and an understanding of resource efficiency.


Design for deconstruction This course will enable participants to design for deconstruction relating to a building’s end of life, to reduce the water that the demolition of a building would create as well as assist in developing markets for more material reuse.

New products and techniques are helping to ensure that our built environment is constructed in the most efficient way, minimising waste and emissions at all stages of the construction process and throughout the building’s life. These courses will provide participants with technical knowledge and expertise to understand and implement environmental technologies on site.

Who is this training for?Courses within this category are suitable for all relevant professionals, skilled trades and clients, including: architects, building control officers, electricians, Energy Saving Trust advisors, facilities managers, Green Deal advisors and assessors, heating and ventilation engineers, plumbers and retrofit/ARBED installers.

Best practice in site waste managementThis course will raise awareness on how to better manage construction and demolition waste, addressing the legal responsibilities of waste and highlighting areas of cost savings and potential penalties. The course will provide an understanding of the benefits of developing site waste management plans, when one should be produced and any exceptions.

19 Manage and Use

Through BIM, architects, planners and designers can model, predict and measure the environmental impact of each component of a building, helping to impact on sustainability throughout the construction process.

On completion, modern buildings are designed to help their occupants minimise their energy use, or even generate their own renewable power that can be exported to the grid. The challenge with existing buildings is in ensuring that they are fit for current and future climatic and user requirements.

Low carbon leadership This course will enable professionals in the built environment sector to develop their low carbon skills and knowledge and will support a step change to be made in the way such individuals, communities and businesses use their buildings to ensure they become more sustainable and to reduce carbon emissions.

This course is comprised of a suite of 3 modules at CQFW level 4 Each module will comprise of 30 hours of learning.
