    Event Details

The National Park Service - National Geographic BioBlitz is a 24-hour all taxa biodiversityinventory that will take place in Hawai`i Volcanoes National Park on May 15 and 16, 2015. Inaddition to documenting species, the public will have an opportunity to observe and learnabout the living creatures in the park and the many links between its plants, animals, thevolcanic environment, traditional people, and our daily lives. Thus, we wish to offerinventories and other learning experiences covering a range of subject areas and employinga variety of techniques.

    Locations

The Hale H!‘ike, or Data Center , for the 2015 BioBlitz will be located in the vicinity of theK " lauea Visitor Center. The Data Center is the location for sorting specimens, keying outspecies, using microscopes, data entry, receiving and tabulating inventory data, etc. Notethat the Data Center will be open to the public and presents another opportunity for teachingand interaction with Bioblitz and Biodiversity and Cultural Festival attendees.

The Festival will be held adjacent to the K " lauea Visitor Center. The festival is the location forexhibition booths, opening and closing ceremonies, media interviews, public programs anddemonstrations, and many other activities.

Field activities will be located throughout Hawai`i Volcanoes National Park.

    Public Inventories

Many inventory activities will be available to the public during the BioBlitz. These includedaytime inventories such as plant, fungi, bird and invertebrate hikes, as well as evening, night, and/or early morning inventories for bats, insects, and birds. Also, programs exploring

other aspects of the natural environment such as the geology and night skies and culturalhistory and ethnographic resources of an area will be offered. The schedule for inventorieswill be developed based on the availability and knowledge of subject experts. Once theschedule is set, inventories will be available for public sign-up online. Group size may varydepending on the type of inventory and resource sensitivity. Public inventories typically lastbetween two to three hours. We expect the majority of public inventories will take place onthe afternoon of Friday May 15 and the morning of Saturday May 16, but they can occuranytime in the 24-hour period between noon Friday and noon Saturday. Targeted Inventories

It is also possible to lead an inventory that is limited to a targeted group of experts, colleagues or graduate students. If you are interested in leading a targeted inventory, pleasestate that in the inventory details section.

    School Group Inventories

BioBlitz is an exciting opportunity for you to share your enthusiasm and inspire the nextgeneration of scientists and stewards. Biologists work alongside individuals with traditionalecological knowledge to explore with students the plants and animals and the differentapproaches to observing the natural environment. Many school classes and community youthgroups will attend BioBlitz throughout the two days—especially on Friday morning—and youare invited to participate in a fun and rewarding experience with them. A training prior to theBioblitz will be provided to explain your site and the roles and responsibilities as a coach, mentor, and source of passion for science and culture. School group inventory leaders will

use inquiry based teaching strategies to assist small groups of 4

    th

     to 8

    th

graders with Bioblitzinventories and related activities.
