Apprenticeship in Secondary Mathematics and Science Teaching (Spring, 2014) Designed 5-day lesson plans for nine weeks. Taught lesson plans daily x 9 weeks. Collaborated with parents, students, and mentor teacher as well as administrative assistants and deans.

Knowing and Learning in Mathematics and Science Teaching (Spring, 2014) Topics included structure of knowledge and memory, problem solving and reasoning, early learning foundations, regulatory processes governing learning, and how symbolic thinking emerges from the learner’s community. Course requirements included development of a tool-kit of instructional approaches applicable to teaching STEM.

Project Based Instruction (Spring 2013)Prepared a two-day earth science lesson plan and taught it in a middle school Earth Science classroom. Created a two week unit on weather, climate, and natural disasters with classmate partner.

Under the supervisions of Dr. Carlyn Buckler, led development of a curriculum titled, “The Treasure in Your Terrain: Rocks, Minerals and the Beginning of Earth”, intended for children in grades K-6, and school groups, grades K-8. The program, which was inspired by Ithaca's rich geologic history, reached over 100 elementary school aged children during the summer of 2014. The curriculum’s learning goals aligned with the Earth Science Literacy Initiative’s “Big Ideas”, and involved Earth Science subjects including minerals, fossils, rocks, and the geologic timescale.

Contributed to the Syracuse University (SU) Lava Project, which is a collaboration between sculptor Bob Wysocki and SU geologist Dr. Jeff Karson. Conducted a front-end evaluation/needs assessment for Dr. Karson and Dr. Carlyn Buckler, Adj. Professor of Science Museum Studies, Cooperstown Graduate Program for Museum Studies, SUNY. Drs. Buckler and Karson were collaborating to write a proposal to NSF to fund several education outreach projects. I supported their efforts by: 1) drawing on my knowledge of STEM education to assess, summarize and document public interest lava flow exhibits through 1:1 and focus group interviews; and 2) contributing to proposal development.

Florida Museum of Natural History, Gainesville, FLPublic Programs Intern (Invited, following competitive application process; paid positon), Spring 2012-Spring, 2014Spearheaded the Florida’s Fossils ‘Inquiry Boxes’ project for use by Alachua County Public School teachers; and implemented creative exhibit ideas with design team. Other exhibit-related responsibilities included developing information manuals and delegating tasks related to exhibit management to docents; developing exhibit-specific public relation materials intended for the general public; and improving exhibit attendance statistics by sharing ideas with exhibit development team. Additionally, I assisted the coordinator of public programs with community and educational programming. Responsibilities included organizing collection of program evaluation data for a STEM education research project; interviewing, training, and leading junior volunteers; creating a geological curriculum rich in the fundamentals of Field Methods and Florida Paleontology and using the curriculum to teach over 100 after-school students; developing curricula for program staff (which included 8 certified teachers) in the Center for Science Learning.

VOLUNTEER EXPERIENCESTGIF SOEST Mini-grant, University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa, HIVolunteer, (Fall 2015- Present)Served on the grant reviewing committee for the organization, which funds hands on, interactive projects, scientific equipment, and educator workshops that better connect Hawaii's K-12 students to Earth and Ocean Sciences. Funds are raised through weekly social meetings hosted by rotating volunteers. This year’s record for the highest amount of money profited during one of these weekly meetings is held by my partner and me.

SOEST Open House, University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa, HIVolunteer, (Fall, 2015)Served as the mineral exhibit coordinator, instructing undergraduates on inquiry-based teaching methods to excite and inform children aged K-12 about mineral names, properties, and factoids. Lead a community-wide search and collection of mineral specimens to ensure the ‘wow-factor’ of the display and ‘touchable’ minerals. This public education event saw over 8,000 people.

GeoGators, Gainesville, FLVolunteer, (Spring 2013-Spring 2014)Served as a guest educator during ‘Science Nights” (education outreach programs) at local elementary schools, and as Career Day ‘Geologist’.
