What makes UUM interesting is the university higher management anddenizens are working forward to emerge UUM as a research university inthe eld of social sciences. It is well known that the setbacks of the countryand the world today is not solely centred on science and technology alone.Shortcomings from the economic, political, society and such are the issues ofsocial sciences and needs to be addressed using the approaches of socialsciences.

The courage of UUM to continue making strides to become a pioneer inthis research eld has begun to bear fruit. UUM has to move a number of1200 academic staff to understand and uphold the context, content andprocess of social sciences that is really bounded with the national interest andthe global community. The effort will de nitely take some time and requiresthorough planning and actions. In order to make it a reality, UUM has and will be adding numbers of Centreof Excellence (CoE) at the University and schools level. The effort will be

nalized around June 2016 and is expected to realize the idea of makingUUM as a research university in the eld of social sciences. UUM is determinedto materialize its intention to become a university and research centre relatedto business and society competitiveness.

The commitment can be seen through UUM Transformation Plan which wasdivided into two phases – Strategic Plan Phase I (2011-2015) and StrategicPlan Phase II (2016-2020). Praise to Allah, Strategic Plan Phase I has come to aclose and achieved astounding results. UUM is now in the move to realise itsStrategic Plan Phase II. Remarkably, the development of the TransformationPlan has successfully steered the establishment of UUM’s DNA.

The formation of UUM DNA is oriented on the effort ensuring the denizens(academic staff, administrative and students/alumni) of the value ofKNOWLEDGE, nobleness of VIRTUE and the determination to host SERVICE.Known to all, it is also the UUM motto. It is not impossible for the country andthe world to witness UUM as an eminent management university with highKNOWLEDGE, VIRTUE and SERVICE.

Finally, I believe now is the best time for the Ministry of Higher Educationspeci cally and the country, in general to pay attention and provide endlesssupport to UUM in its effort to become a research university in the eld ofsocial sciences because in 10 years time, UUM is expected to sparkle. Hence,UUM is calling everyone to be part of the journey.

    VIVA UUM.

    A BRIEF INTRODUCTION

Sr. Dr. Mohd Nasrun Mohd Nawi specializes in the area of integratedprocurement and value management. He holds a PhD in the

eld of Construction Project Management from the University ofSalford, U.K. As an academician, he has been active in research

and consultation works related to the elds of offsite and modernmethods of construction such as the Industrialised Building System(IBS), sustainable construction, and value management. Besidesactively involved in various academic activities, he is also anactive author with more than 200 published articles in various typeof publications.

bene cial as it would be easier to gain insights about article publication opportunities. At the same time, attending courses, seminars, and etc.,would create a platform of opportunities for me to get to know researchers from other universities, especially the Research Universities (RU). Iwould be able to bene t from them especially in terms of strategies to increase paper citation and perhaps in creating future opportunitiesto co-author new articles.

In order to be current, I have to be alert at all times of the high impact journals, especially Scopus and WoS-indexed journals, where wiseselection and consistent periodical submissions are the keys to publication success. I will try to submit my articles to the top ranked journals, such as the listed Q1 journals, if rejected, then I would try and submit to other journals levels such as the Q3 or Q4 classi ed journals. I needto be alert with my journal selection. I will also look for “call for papers” announcements as some editors are keen to look for articles and

perhaps facilitate my articles to get published. Last but not least, as an academician, one knows that one’s responsibility and mission is todisseminate knowledge through publication, so, one needs to have a mindset that publication is fun and enjoyable, and not stressful.

    DEPUTY DIRECTOR (PUBLICATION) RIMC

    SR. DR. MOHD NASRUN

    MOHD NAWI

    SHOWCASING EXCELLENCE

Q: What are your strategies for publications?A: Personally, I have few strategies for publications. Obtaininga research grant is the very rst crucial step to take, because itwill help initiate and facilitate the whole publication process. From the grant, publication can be generated, based on solidempirical data. Next is networking. It is very important to have alarge network of contacts especially in the same research area.Since I actively attend conferences, participate in courses, andget involved in other activities where academicians and industryplayers congregate, I would make it a point to get to know otherparticipants, especially if they happen to be editors or managingeditors of journals o r publication related organisations. Grabbing

Q: As the Deputy Director of RIMC, what are your expectations for the research and publication at UUM?A: I really hope to inculcate publication culture among the academicians here. I expect every School to achieve their KPIs and increasetheir research publications performance. Lastly, I wish that all the publication outputs are made available as open access to anyoneinterested, especially students, in order to educate them and at the same time expose them to the knowledge of research and publicationknowledge. In the future, I hope that the number of UUM publication can be increased, especially in high impact journals as listed in theQ1 category, in order to improve the number of citations and thus ultimately help in elevating the university’s ranking.

Q: Can you tell us the roles of RIMC in Research and Publication?A: RIMC is responsible to increase the number of research and publications among the researchers in order to achieve the University’s KPI.We are also responsible to record all the research and publication outputs, such as articles, books, chapters in books, monographs, andetc. We are also held accountable in enhancing the number of citations, either in WoS, Scopus, or Google Scholar.

opportunities to communicate and get to know these people would be

Q: Where do you see UUM in Research and Publication in 5 years’ time?A: In 5 years’ time, I believe the research and publication in UUM has become a culture among the academic staff and students. Recently,we can see the numbers of Principal Investigator (PI) increasing. Same goes with the publications. I can foresee that the publicationamong academic staff and students will increase especially in journals article publications. I am expecting to see positive increase ofarticles published in journals indexed by Scopus and WoS (ISI).

Q: How to get there? Describe 3 major strategies?A: Cooperation between RIMC, library and Schools need to be pushed to the maximum level. Sessions of brie ngs and workshops to exposethe importance of research and publications to the academic staff and students are essential in promoting the idea of enculturation ofresearch and publication. One of the strategies is the exposure to online indexed publications as it will increase the university rankingthrough Webometrics. Secondly, to increase collaboration with other high ranking universities (local or abroad) in terms of research andpublication. Finally, the development of HiCoE and CoEs in order to improve the number of research and publication, where researcherscan concentrate and be more motivated to conduct research and produce publications as their research areas will be more speci cand focused.

Q: Is there any special incentives given by the university for publication? Please describe.A: The current postgraduate incentives and other incentives schemes such as Skim Pembiayaan Yuran Penerbitan Jurnal (SPYPJ) andpublications incentives (Scopus and WoS) by RIMC will remain. At present, we are in the process to introduce new publications incentives. We will start with giving incentives to authors who manage to publish articles in WoS (Q1) journal. We also will introduce research schemeto match the grant especially when it involved the international and private sector’s funding.

IPQ ON LEADERSHIPLearn, Lead & Legacy

A contemporary business environment requires its own antennaetuned to acquire and enhance its knowledge. Therefore, anaverage organization with great degree of discipline will surviveor grow as projected. Nothing extraordinary will be recorded byordinary organization. Extraordinary commitment to learn andunderstand internal and external environments would enable anorganization to compete better.

However, if we wanted to see extraordinary results then we needto set very ambitious goals, which can be described as Big, Hairy, and Audacious Goals (BHAGs). Many de ne BHAGs as impossible, unrealistic, or ‘crazy’. For instance, a goal to position an organizationoperating locally to the world’s top 100 in its respective eld within10 years would certainly make average people describe suchorganization as nonsense or ‘crazy’.

However, do we really need to pay attention to those who alwayssay no to something uncommon to them? The answer is certainlyno. Tony Fernandes at Air Asia, Jack Ma at Alibaba.com, RichardBranson at Virgin and Mark Zuckerberg at Facebook are amongthe few people whom can be described as upholding BHAGs.They will not be who they are today if they think, act or behavelike ordinary leaders. Achieving extraordinary results requireextraordinary commitment, discipline and drive to become thebest. Above all, the CEO or Managing Director must lead andportray the extraordinary attributes.

Dare to be to be different, innovative, creative and willing to takerisk are among major criteria of organizations to make BHAGspossible. Speci cally, differentiation would make competitionirrelevant, innovation and creativity will enhance chances to createdifferentiation and willing to take risk will make BHAGs possible. The ability to act accordingly to all those criteria would enablean organization to set its’ BHAGs. Every ambitious organizationregardless of its size should opt for BHAGs. Success will enable theorganization to lead others or speci cally become among themajor player in its market segment, with improving market sharesand position.

Every ambitious leader will try his best to make sure peoplesummarize him as a great leader. In other words, it is about legacy. Atrue leader will not only concerned with the nancial performancebut other important aspects which will affect its performance suchas culture, tradition and DNA of his organization. A great leader isa person who upholds the concept of Learn, Lead, and Legacy.

Assoc. Prof Dr. Haim Hilman Abdullah is an Associate Professor atCollege of Business (UUM COB) and a Director at Institute of QualityManagement (IPQ)

I could not recall the rst time I heard the word technology. Onething for sure, it has been around long enough that I do not botherto know. I have so far devoted myself to learn how to managetechnology for no less than a decade and end up having a careerteaching others on managing technology. Ironically, the more I talkabout technology, the more I questioned myself what technologyis really about. Honestly, I found it hard to describe technology ina way to please everyone. I personally think there is any de nitionthat really ts all facets of technology and explained them in away easy to digest, particularly by the general public.

During my early years studying technology, my lecturer said it is

enough to describe technology as “the ways we do thing”. I reallyhave a hard time to understand the de nition as it sounded as ifeverything is related to technology. It is indeed. What more, weuse technology as we nd logics behind it. For instance, we ridevehicles rather than walk on foot as it is the faster way to reacha destination; we send messages using email instead of walkingto the post of ce as it is the most convenient way; and we usemicrowave oven instead of rewood as it is the safest way toprepare our meals. Nevertheless, walking with shoes, writing letterswith a pen, and setting the re with matches are also technologiesof themselves.

To some, it would sound trivial to discuss the term technology asit is, but the technology that we claim to know could be just onthe tip of an iceberg. As such, it would be interesting to questionwhat technology is all about. Simply by googling the net we could

nd hundreds if not thousands of de nitions of technology. Without

denying the contributions of those de nitions, just reading thede nitions could not help the readers to immensely understand thetrue meaning of technology.

Looking back to what my lecturer’s de nition of technology as “theways we do thing”, it becomes apparent that we accomplish allsort things with the assistance of technology. Relatively, it would bedif cult to use our bare hands to accomplish something even withlittle complexity to achieve quality level near to the machines. Evena simple handicraft product will need basic tools to achieve somelevel of esthetical values. Consequently, it would be impossible toaccomplish something with the high level of complexity with barehands, to some extent.

A quick look at the timeline of human civilisation has showndifferent eras were identi ed according to technological progress,i.e., stone age, copper and bronze ages, iron age, and all theway to the industrial revolution, information and communication

technology (ICT), and etc. Accordingly, it is the early civilisationsbrought us through the discovery of technological artefacts. Forinstance, Egypt is known for the great pyramids of Giza, and Chinafor the Great Walls. With the bene ts of ICT, all of this informationcan be easily googled through the net.

So, now do we have a clear de nition of technology? Not reallythere yet. So far we could only associate technology as a tool forassisting us to accomplish tasks. There is nothing wrong with thisstatement, but as mentioned earlier, it only represents the tip of aniceberg that can be clearly seen from the surface of an ocean, while a larger portion of it is pretty much unseen underwater.

IPQ ON EDUCATIONGamifcation in Teaching andLearning

    By : Dr. Narentheren Kaliappen

In selecting the best or most suitable universities for prospectivestudents, many thought of using the university rankings. Universityrankings of higher education institutions are made of combinationsof many factors. Rankings are mostly carried out by newspapers, magazines, websites, independent body or government agencies. In addition to the overall ranking of institutions, there are ranking byfaculty and subject too. Most rankings consider the measures ofwealth, research, publication, academic peer review, industriespeer review, students, and several other criteria. Some institutionsare ranked in within a single state, while some others are rankedworldwide. There are a lot of arguments about the usefulness andaccuracy of rankings due to methodologies being used but thepopularity of ranking is keep growing.

It is true that the position of a university in ranking is contributesigni cantly to the popularity of the university. In general, there arethree most in uential university rankings and they are QuacquarelliSymonds (QS) World University Rankings, Times Higher EducationWorld University Rankings (THE), and Academic Ranking of WorldUniversities (ARWU). Besides rankings, rating has become anotherimportant tool in measuring quality of a university. The ratingsystem can assist the universities name through a much broaderrange of criteria. The goals are to enable institutions to be visibleand recognized their excellence.

So far, QS is the leading body for university ratings. It is known byQS Stars University Ratings. It allows universities to see their ownpotentials in depth. In other words, QS Stars is a rating systemwhich can help students to get a better overview of an institution’squalities. The rating system can act as an additional tool to givedeeper information of the individual institutions. The QS Starsrating in particular is derived from a score of eight performancecriteria such as the quality of research, teaching quality, graduateemployability, internationalization, university infrastructure andfacilities, innovation and knowledge transfer, social and civicengagement, and special criteria. Universities can be evaluatedto get from one star to ve stars, or ve stars plus. Speci cally, vestars plus are for the truly exceptional and outstanding institutions.

There are many advantages of good ratings for the institutionssuch as improving its international recognition and at the sametime attract more students, increase in web presence and media

awareness, and also as an auditing tool to improve the institution’sperformance. Moreover, it also provides the lower-rankingand unlisted institutions the opportunity to get the attentionfrom prospect students, and to be visible for their distinction. Inconclusion, QS Stars University Ratings is an evaluation system, andit is different from university rankings. It acts as complementary torankings. Nonetheless, the service comes with certain amount offees for the initial audit as well as for the annual license. In Malaysia, only seven universities have participated in the QS Stars UniversityRatings with only one university obtained ve stars.

    Gamifying your classrooms...Is it possible?

This is an important question that needs to be addressed in orderto develop digital strategies in teaching and learning. Computergames have long been a much-loved living room leisure amongteenagers. In modern years, it has been used to impact teachingand learning process. For example, Minecraft has been used inmore than 7,000 classrooms in over 40 countries. Here are some ofthe good examples of gami cation in e-learning; Classcraft, Anki,Memrise, Kahoot and etc.

Using video games or other gaming elements motivates studentsand engage them more in the learning process. Besides, gami cation approach also helps students learn with fun andkeep them entertained and connected.

When the instructor brings these gamici cation concepts intoteaching and learning, it inspires and motivates students tochallenge new ideas in a positive way. The instructors can usethis game based approach in diverse ways; problem-solving,motivation and expressing concepts in mathematics, history, artand literature.

Without doubt, this approach assists the instructors to do ipsclassroom method, which really challenge the students’ ability. While game-based learning is fairly new to most educationalsystems across the world, but it is sure that the teachers andstudents stand to gain from it.

In this modern era, students are very advanced and learnalmost everything via internet with just a click. This puts learninginstitutions at a great disadvantage where educators have to bereally creative in creating the lessons that could offer studentsexperiences they can’t get at home. Therefore, one of the mosteffective approaches would be a well-designed game.

By gami ng your classroom, you provide exciting incentives forlearning while also promoting teamwork, healthy competition, and a safe, fun classroom culture. Based on European CommissionIn 2020, almost all jobs would require a high level of technicalcompetencies. So, this game based teaching and learningapproach will assist the students in developing technical skills andassist them to grab the opportunity in the job market and reducegraduate unemployment.

As we know exercise is good for us. What you may not know is just how good or exactly what quali es as exercise. A deluge ofstudies have documented the health bene ts of exercise. What’simpressive about the research, aside from the sheer volume, isthe number of conditions exercise seems to prevent, ameliorate,or delay. We’re used to hearing about exercise fending off heartattacks.

If you’re physically active, your heart gets trained to beat slowerand stronger, so it needs less oxygen to function well; your arteriesget springier, so they push your blood along better; and your levelsof “good” HDL cholesterol go up. It’s also not much of a surprisethat physical activity helps prevent diabetes. Muscles that areused to working stay more receptive to insulin, the hormone thatushers blood sugar into cells, so in t individuals blood sugar levelsaren’t as likely to creep up.

But exercise as a soldier in the war against cancer? It seems to be,and on several fronts: breast, colon, endometrial, perhaps ovarian. Some research suggests that it takes quite a lot of exercise to makea difference: four to seven hours of moderate to vigorous activity aweek. Three studies have found that if you’ve had colon cancer orbreast cancer, physical activity reduces the chances of it comingback.

To top things off, moving the body seems to help the brain.Several studies have found that exercise can reduce thesymptoms of depression, and it changes the brain in ways similarto antidepressant medications. In old age, physical activity maydelay the slide of cognitive decline into dementia, and even oncethat process has started, exercise can improve certain aspects ofthinking.

Most evidence suggests that the choice of the kind of activity is farless important than whether to be active at all. About half of adultAmericans don’t meet one of the most oft-cited guidelines, whichcalls for 30 minutes of moderate-intensity activity (a fast walkingpace) most days of the week and you can accumulate that totalin bouts of 10 to 15 minutes. Clearly some of us are less athleticthan others and some unathletic individuals were simply born thatway.

Twin studies suggest that about half of the difference in physicalactivity among people is probably inherited. And researchers aremaking headway in identifying particular genes that may in uencehow we respond to physical exertion. But genetic explanationsfor behaviors like exercising only go so far. Many other in uencescome into play: family, neighborhood, cultural attitudes, historicalcircumstances. Research has shown, not surprisingly, that activechildren are more likely to have parents who encouraged themto be that way.

    English Language

    Acquisition

Depending on one’s level of intelligence, one may be ableto acquire a new language without any guidance, simply byimitation and repetition; one can simply have the knowledge ofa new language. Suf cient exposure towards the language canpromote language acquisition subconsciously. For instance, bywatching long hours of Japanese or Korean movies and dramascan subconsciously engage one with the language and byimitating the language use, one can acquire the language.

Even though they may be regularly exposed to English dramaseries and other English based programs on television, they could

simply turn themselves off, for example, not hearing the languageand only understand the show by reading the Malay or Mandarinsubtitles provided. Furthermore, they do not feel the need to makeuse of the language or engage in any activities that used thelanguage.

The standard of English in Malaysia has declined due to the factthat many students, speci cally, in the rural areas do not feel theneed to study or learn the language. This has led to their poorpro ciency in English Language even though they were exposedto the language since they were young; from kindergarten toForm 5 or 6 at secondary level. So, who is at fault? Instead ofpointing ngers, we Malaysians should ask ourselves how can wework together to improve the matter. This phenomenon of poorpro ciency in English should be handled professionally and needto be done in stages.

As we can see, students come from different background inMalaysia and there are in some places where English is a totalforeign language even though English is actually the secondlanguage in the country. The exposure of English is very low insome places and this makes it hard for the students in rural areasespecially to understand some terms and even get the commonsense of the English language.

Furthermore, in Malaysia there are some people who disregardthe importance of English and highlighted that as a Malaysian, one should be learning more Bahasa Melayu and have goodcompetencies in Bahasa Melayu. It somehow has reached themind of the children and some even think the same way in Englishlanguage learning. These scenarios have slowly corrupted themind of the children nowadays.

In addition, parents too were not involved in their children’s processof learning and they are not aware of the matter that their childrenhave no interest in English or the children are not doing well inEnglish language. This has also led to the lack of pro ciency andcompetencies in English language among Malaysian students.

Future kitchen will be located at all locations on Earth plus beyondthe planet’s atmosphere as well. So, let’s take a look at some ofthe futuristic kitchen features that will make you are always want toenter your kitchen and do love cooking so much.

Firstly, by using smart phone we will be able to check the suppliesin the refrigerator or cupboard and order more from the grocerystore. Smart refrigerator can diagnose nutritional needs with aninteractive 3D display. In the future also, we will not need to worryabout the presence of pests like rats and cockroaches because all

around the house being installed with small electricity that preventthe pests to enter.

Beside that, by using barcode or RFID can help in alerting residencewhen food in the kitchen, especially in the refrigerator or cupboardis near their expiration date. Futhermore, the kitchen cabinet alsobe improvised in the future in order to design based on kitchenutensils and food that can be stored. They will add a sensor toalert residence which part is suitable for certain utensils basedon the size and weight. The material design in the future is morelightweight and compact. The size will be reduced in order to savethe space, but enough to store all the kitchen equipment.

In future, heavenly when you are cooking and your daughtersuddenly crying in the living room you can just leave the meal

without worry because your fry pan will turn itself off when your mealis cooked. The part that I love the most is when your equipmentsuch as oven and fridge can suggest recipes based on what wehave. So we can save our time to search about the recipe andworried about ingredient that are not enough to prepare the dish.A small computer is installed in the kitchen to make a diary of whatwe have eaten for a week or a month. With a smart software install,it can tell us the calories of each food that we make. If we connectwith the internet, we can chat with friends and share recipes ofdelicious dishes.

To increase security in the kitchen and avoid from the re, the homecontrol system can detect excessive gas that harm the house. On detecting a large amount of gas, the gas sensor immediatelyinstructs the gas valve actuator node to turn off the valve usingits relay switch module. In this situation, there is no latent time toexchange commands with the home control system. The gassensor autonomously operates, and later informs the home controlsystem.

Finally, I can conclude that they are many inventions nowadays inorder to meet human needs in a future. There are a lot of researchand innovation has been done basically on smart homes toenhance our living environment. So just tap your chest and ask itspleasure. You can choose the best for your life.

    ANTARABANGSA

PHASE 2 OF UUM STRATEGIC PLAN (2016-2020) FUELS UUM TOSUCCEED IN THE INTERNATIONAL ARENA

27 January 2016 (Wednesday) - Following the success of Phase 1 of University Utara Malaysia (UUM)Strategic Plan, 2016 is seen as the year to spearhead and step up efforts to bring UUM to the international arenathrough Phase 2 of the UUM Strategic Plan (2016-2020). The various achievements and accomplishments helped toset the stage and map out the journey for the university to continue to forge ahead to the international arena afterattaining numerous successes at the national level.

    PELAN STRATEGIK

The Vice-Chancellor’s Annual Address 2016 opened with a recollection of achievements attained by the universityand the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Dato’ Seri Dr. Mohamed Mustafa Ishak, foresee that this year would be a challengingyear for the university, not only from the financial aspect but also other challenges that we must face in order tobecome Eminent Management University; not only recognised at the national level but also at the international

level.Prof. Dato’ Seri added that, UUM employs its own strategies to develop the university as an outstanding campus andthe approaches are tailored to concur with the standings and the current circumstances of the university, which wasset in motion by the UUM Strategic Plan Phase 1 (2011-2015). “In 2016, we will put our focus on Phase 2 of the UUMStrategic Plan which emphasised the four core thrusts i.e. Thrust 1 (Enhancing Scholarship and Internationalisation);Thrust 2 (Developing Human Capital and Talent Management); Thrust 3 (Holistic Development of Students) andThrust 4 (Generating/Creating Wealth). “Therefore, in order to facilitate the execution of this strategic plan, we haveoutlined six (6) Key Result Areas (KRA) which include “research and high-impact innovations, high-impact teachingand learning activities, high performance students, exceptional human capital and institution, optimum and strategicwealth creation as well as conducive infrastructure and learning environment,” said Prof. Dato’ Seri in his annualaddress to the staff of UUM at Mu’adzam Shah Hall.

UUM Strategic Plan Phase 1 (2011-2015) strived to establish this university as an Eminent Management Universityat the national level. UUM has succeeded to attain 65 percent of the KPI listed in Phase 1 of the plan. UUM hasalso demonstrated a steady increase in the number of academic staff with PhD, the number of international staffand international students as well as an increase in research funding, increase in the number of the principalresearchers, revenue from consultation activities and wealth creation over the period of 2011 to 2015. He added, the challenges and obstacles in setting the path for UUM to be recognised at the international level are certainly nota walk in the park. We will face obstacles and challenges in our journey before we achieve any level of success. Asa consequence, Phase 2 of the UUM Strategic Plan has been meticulously planned and prepared; taking into accountthe financial constraints faced by the university. Thus, the campus community must be prepared to encounterdifficulties and hardships before achieving the eventual success.

“In my annual address two years ago, I emphasised on the magnitude of the ‘Sense of Urgency’ in carrying outduties or completing tasks at the university but to this day, I do not see much evidence of change. Many staff stillneed to be instructed and closely monitored when performing their duties. “We should be quick to act and react.UUM was established more than 30 years ago and the university has experienced numerous transformations. Inthis strategic plan, we have taken a proactive approach to improve the mission and vision of the university so thatwe can change for the better,” he added. As a result, the university has taken a bold step to rebrand two schools aswell as introducing new school and academic programmes.

Furthermore, in order to strengthen UUM standings at the national and international levels, the university has set anexplicit target that by the year 2020, UUM aims to be listed among the ‘World Top 200’ in the QS World UniversityRankings, ‘Asia Top 50’, ‘SEA Top 10’, ‘Malaysia Top 5’ and ‘OYAGSB-World Top 100’ (Business School) in addition tointensify the effort to improve on the Research Centre of Excellence by instituting and strengthening the niche areasat UUM COB, UUM CAS and UUM COLGIS. Prof. Dato’ Seri also shared the overview of the New Year Address by the

Minister of Higher Education, Dato’ Seri Idris Jusoh. The Minister of Higher Education drew attention to the conceptof ‘Flexible Education’, the rankings of public universities in the QS University Rankings, in addition to the issues andchallenges encountered by students and lecturers in 2016.

At the event, Dato’ Seri Vice-Chancellor also presented the KPI awards, excellence awards 2014-2015 and he alsounveiled the brand-new name of the School of Social Development (SSD) – which is now identified as the School ofApplied Psychology, Social Work and Policy (SAPSP). Dato’ Seri also launched UUM Mobile for staff.
