The Probus Club of Jindalee has honoured Carmen Lawson with life membership of the club.

Although the club has five male life members, Carmen is the first female to receive the award. Women often work quietly behind the scene and their huge contributions often go unrecognised. This has now been rectified in the Jindalee club.

Carmen is an inaugural member who joined in 1991, taking on the job of newsletter editor in that year and holding that position for four years when she then became vice-president.

She served a year as president and then remained a committee member for another year.

The area of activities called and Carmen sat on the sub-committee for another four years. She was well known for many delicious goodies made for morning teas on outings

The next monthly meeting of the Probus Club of Jindalee will be on Tuesday 9th July at the Jindalee Golf Club following morning tea at 10.05 am.

Meetings include an interesting guest speaker and members and guests are welcome to stay for a light lunch at a nominal cost.

The outing for July will be a trip to Kooroomba Vineyard and Lavender Farm. Other activities for the month include coffee morning, movie and theatre days.

Probus is a friendship club for retired or semi-retired men and women. If you would like to visit or require more information, please ring Neville 3376 1824.

With four community publications, we are all about community here at Local News Publications. We love nothing more than hearing that new groups have started up from seeds planted by articles in our publications, as has happened recently. We hear feedback that memberships at service groups and social clubs are increasing, and we couldn’t be happier.

Without active communities, and thereby, active community participants, we would all be poorer in spirit and miss out on so many wonderful connections.

Being part of a community group is a win-win situation. You enjoy outings, new friendships and the sense of belonging that comes with being part of a group. Others benefit by your friendship and input and, in most cases, the world community benefits by fundraising efforts and the raising of awareness of so many ways we can help our fellow man.

I have been invited to quite a lot of clubs and groups to talk about the work of Destiny Rescue and our trip to Thailand, and I have thoroughly enjoyed meeting and getting to know many residents. One thing I notice is that often people in these groups are members of multiple groups, and I see familiar faces everywhere I go.

People who have a heart to help their fellow man are often so generous with their time and energy that they participate in two or even three clubs. Far from seeing it as burden or something they ‘should’ do, these people are committed and dedicated to seeing change, locally and globally.

I am constantly encouraged, not only by people’s response to what I share, but by the generosity, both financially and in the warm welcome I receive, and the willingness to hear the cold hard facts about issues that are going on around the world.

People who are in these clubs and groups are people who are willing to face the injustices and, often evil, actions of others, head on. They are people who firmly, and rightly, believe that a difference is a difference, no matter the size.

And the fact is, we can all make a difference. Maybe you’ll make a difference to a friend in a club who is dealing with loss, or hardship. Maybe you’ll relieve a burden from another by putting your hand up to be on the committee. Maybe you’ll make a difference by offering to drive someone to and fro from activities and outings. Maybe you’ll be on the stall to raise funds for fresh drinking water in Africa. Or buy some jewellery that a Destiny Rescue girl made. Or donate some towels for Giving with Love. It all makes a difference. But you have to be where the action is. Why not think about joining a service group? Or start a special interest group yourself. It could be just the thing someone else is looking for.

Bullying never seems to be far from our attention these days. Almost every week we hear tragic stories of young people who have taken their lives as a result of having been bullied. Or a friend, relative or neighbour shares their experience of being the victim of workplace aggression in one form or another.

Amongst young people, bullying typically takes the form of physical attacks, and we’re seeing this in girls now almost as much as with boys. Amongst adults, bullying typically takes the form of social exclusion. Being rejected socially can hurt as much as a punch to the stomach, and we see this in common phrases such as “my feelings are hurt”.

Brain imaging studies have now confirmed that during social exclusion very similar patterns of activation occur in the brain as those found in physical pain. That is, the experience and regulation of social and physical pain share a common neuro-anatomical basis. In fact, even the appearance of social exclusion – for example, being unable to attend a team game due to some unfortunate circumstance – is enough to activate these parts of the brain and make us “feel” the pain of exclusion.

Other studies have shown that early childhood abuse, or even witnessing domestic violence, cause abnormal physical changes in the brain of children. The brains of young adults aged 18-25 with no history of exposure to domestic violence or abuse were compared with individuals who had experienced verbal abuse from their peers during middle school years.

Significant brain differences were found between the two groups, with bullying victims’ brains showing under-developed connections between the left and right sides of their brain through the massive bundle of connecting fibres called the corpus callosum. They also had higher levels of anxiety, depression, anger, hostility, dissociation, and drug abuse than others in the study, all of which are associated with structural differences in the brain.

The good news is that brain changes associated with exposure to bullying or any forms of aggression can be repaired due to “brain plasticity”. For example, the ability to forgive and empathize is related to increased brain activity of areas around the left prefrontal cortex (associated with self-perception), and significant reduction of blood flow in the amygdala and hippocampus (associated with emotional regulation). Put simply, empathy and forgiveness change brain function in relation to self-image and emotional responsiveness. Best of all, these changes appear to be sustained for long periods of time.

The take-home message is that we are now gaining a much better understanding of the brain and ways in which social experiences, such as bullying, affect the whole nervous system. Along with this we are now able to develop new non-medical treatments involving changing beliefs that in turn repair the damage caused by negative life events. This is a new frontier of psychology and one we will hear about much more in the coming years.


Sinnamon Park local Rick Parkes in his seventieth year will again lace up his walking shoes in September and take another step towards his goal of raising $10,000 in support of Cancer Council Queensland’s I Can for Cancer campaign.

I Can for Cancer is a state-wide community fundraiser that calls on Queenslanders to say ‘I Can, U Can, We Can For Cancer’, because together we can beat cancer.

Following a successful fundraising campaign through I Can for Cancer in 2010, walking the Camino Frances from St Jean to Santiago, 800km, Rick will walk the 1200km Camino de la Plata through Spain from the Port of Cadiz on the Mediterranean to Santiago, via the Camino de la Plata.

“The motivation for this walk is the fact that I am a prostate cancer survivor and I am very much aware of the lives that are lost because of this ghastly disease,” Rick said.

He aims to raise the $10,000 for prostate cancer research as it is the most common form of cancer in Australian men, excluding non-melanoma skin cancer.

In 2009, 3978 Queenslanders were diagnosed with prostate cancer and 546 men died from the aggressive disease, making it the second most common cause of male cancer deaths after lung cancer.

Rick was first diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2009, but after successful surgery, felt well and fit enough to tackle the pilgrimage through Spain and raise money to say, “Thanks to life”.

Now, on September 7, 2013, he is heading back to conquer another Camino.Rick can be supported through his online fundraising page on the www.icanforcancer.org.au website, where he can

be found by searching ‘Richard Parkes’. Cancer Council Queensland’s I Can for Cancer campaign calls on Queenslanders to do what they can – from baking

goodies to getting active, clipping for cancer or going blue for a day – to raise vital funds.Cancer Council Queensland spokesperson Katie Clift hopes more than 1500 community-minded Queenslanders will

pledge I Can for Cancer this year and raise $1.8 million to support the one in two Queenslanders who will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime.

Anyone can pledge to clip, get active, bowl, golf, go without, go blue, cook or do just about anything to help raise funds for Cancer Council Queensland’s vital work by registering online at www.icanforcancer.org.au or calling 1300 65 65 85.

I must confess to being a big fan of Dog Whisperer Cesar Milan. The secret to his success lies in his understanding of the natural canine mind. As a social pack animal, dog behaviour works within a natural hierarchy and many behaviours will flow naturally from this position.

It can be a trap therefore to translate certain human concepts of “fairness” and equality or even apply training methods which function on a tit for tat rewards contract basis. At best it may teach a dog to perform a task for a set reward. This is fine for puppy training for specific tasks like sit or stay but does not necessarily imply a deeper respect or control.

Many out of control, “jeckyl and hyde“ and inter dog aggression problems result from the confusion in the dogs mind as to exactly what is expected, especially in any new or ambiguous situation.

What dogs respond best to, is a position of calm authority (that’s you hopefully) and many desirable behaviours will simply flow from a relaxed but confident dog. The dog understands what is expected and acts accordingly.

It is not, however, about fear based training or domination. Dogs trained this way may tolerate this for a while but eventually either snap (literally) or become very withdrawn and non confident and cringing emotional wrecks, which is very sad. One of the best things you can do with a new dog is to walk it on lead ideally within a pack situation. There is something deep seated in the canine psyche which allows it to flow and function as a social pack on the move.

Our nurse, Maria, has just spent a week working with Cesar Milan in LA. (Check out our Facebook site). Unlike much of LA, Cesar is the real deal and walks the walk and talks the talk. Maria will soon be offering her own dog pack walking service. The benefits go well beyond exercise. I would encourage prospective or existing dog owners to absorb his message. It makes perfect sense to me.

Jindalee State School’s fete themed Under the Sea is to be held on Saturday 31 August from 11 am and concluding at 7pm with a spectacular fireworks display. Organisers are gearing up for a huge day with something for everyone. There will be food stalls, cakes, handcrafted nick-knacks for all ages, homewares, trash and treasure bargains, 15 carnival rides for the kids and much more.

To be held on the school grounds on the corner of Burrendah and Wongaburra Streets, the under the sea theme will be carried throughout the day, and fete goers will enjoy the atmosphere of sea creatures, coral, an octopus’ garden and shipwreck treasures in amongst the stalls and rides.

This event is not possible without the generous support of the community, and organisers welcome sponsorship and donations, both in goods and finances, to not only make the fete a fantastic day but also to raise funds to make substantial improvements around the school.

Centenary Suburbs Historical Society update by Vice President Lynda Young

If you are 50 or over, or recently retired from the workforce and wish to make contact with others in your community, and are looking for fun, friendship and interesting activities, then we invite you to join us on Tuesday 2nd July, 9.30am, at the Jindalee Bowls Club. You will be met at the door and given a two month activity newsletter, a free raffle ticket, have a warm cuppa followed by a short meeting, then either a speaker or entertainers will follow.

Some of our warm-up exercise classes include ‘Steady Steps’ held at Middle Park Uniting Church each Monday morning at 9am. Also, ‘Zumba Gold’ classes are held at the same venue at 9.15am each Wednesday morning. Our MahJong members keep warm and happy at the Mt Ommaney Library on 4th and 11th July. Members attend our ‘Book Club’ held at the Jindalee Bowls Club Library Room on the 3rd Thursday each month.

Our ‘Go Card’ Explorer Trip to Wolston House included a guided tour of the old House and a Sandwich and Devonshire Tea Lunch. Our Coach trip in July will be A Christmas in July at St Bernards, Mt Tambourine. This trip also includes morning tea and a two course lunch and spectacular scenery.

Looking ahead to August, we hold our AGM where 18 Members have registered to continue planning another happy year for our Club. Then, we hold a Rocks Riverside Festival ‘Picnic in the Park’ during Seniors Week. This is sponsored by COTA acting for the Department of Communities, the major sponsor for Seniors’ Week.

Our winter hardy Members enjoyed their three day trip to ‘Happy Valley’ for Christmas Cheer at Stanthorpe, so you see there are always plenty of activities including Morning Teas, Evening Dinners, Plays, Concerts, and on the third Sunday each month we enjoy a social afternoon with our Bowling Club friends.

SENIORSCentenary National Seniors Update by Elaine

Following on from last month’s article on the brasses erected by the Centenary Suburbs Historical Society in recent years, this is a photo taken at one of the many memorials in our suburbs celebrating our association with the explorer John Oxley.

In December 1823, Oxley explored the Brisbane River in a whaleboat as far as Goodna. On 3rd December, he landed near the base of Mt Ommaney where Oxley and his party camped overnight. The next morning, Oxley climbed Mt Ommaney, to study the surrounding countryside and take compass bearings.

To remember the significance of these events, a monument was unveiled at the entrance to the Mt Ommaney Bushland Reserve, at Summit Place, Mt Ommaney on the 3rd December 2011. Four generations of Oxley’s descendants were present, including Noela Joyce, his great great-great-granddaughter, her own mother, Noela’s daughter and son and three grandsons.

Look closely at Oxley’s profile on the plaque compared to Noela’s grandson’s profile. Can you see an uncanny resemblance after so many generations? Why not visit the plaque at Summit Place and maybe enjoy the bushwalk along the river imagining what John Oxley may have seen 190 years ago?

Capturing our history in brass

The members of Centenary Quilters have been supporting the Motor Neurone Disease (MND) Association of Queensland since Foundation member Jean Weaver was diagnosed with MND in 2001. Sadly Jean lost her battle with MND in 2003.

In her memory, the ladies have made charity raffle quilts for the Association. This year’s quilt will be the 11th made and is very special as the Club celebrates 30 years, as do the MND Association of Queensland.

This stunning quilt is in shades of cornflower blue, the cornflower being the MND Association’s symbol of hope. The quilt will be on display at the Brisbane Exhibition and Centenary Quilters Quilt show in September.

Centenary Quilters meet at the Mt Ommaney Library the first Monday of the month 7.30 - 9.30pm and the first Friday of the month 9.30am - 12.30. For further information phone Glenys 3376 7722.

Queensland PlanI have announced the three local delegates that will represent the South-Western

Suburbs through the Queensland Plan process. I am very pleased to welcome local community worker and Minister from St Catherine’s Anglican Parish of Centenary Suburbs, Rev’d Tania Eichler, Mr Murray Sharpe, an experienced project manager and property professional and Mr Viet Tran a Community leader and business representative. Our community will be well represented with our delegates having experience in areas such as business, infrastructure, community service and advocacy and property.

The Queensland Plan is a collaborative process that will involve the community, industry and all levels of government to set a 30 year vision for the state. This will not be a State Government plan. It will be a plan created by Queenslanders, for Queensland and will influence the future decision making of all levels of government, industry and community groups.

I am also calling for locals to contact my office to nominate themselves to be part of the Mount Ommaney local community consultation panel. Mount Ommaney is my home and Queensland is a great state with great opportunity and I look forward to working with our community members in developing its future vision.

The Centenary Suburbs RSL is pleased to announce the establishment of a naval cadet unit in the Centenary Suburbs. Our sub branch is pleased to support this unit, so if there any young people out there wanting to get some excitement as well as skills that they would not normally experience, then this is the place for you.

Young Queenslander of the Year 2009, Mr Chiu-Hing Chan is moving forward with establishing an Australian Navy Cadet unit in West Brisbane, recruiting secondary school students between 13 – 17 years old to undertake navy orientated activities such as sailing, boating, flying and camping. The new naval cadet unit will commence in August this year, and will be temporarily located at the Jamboree Heights Scout Hut.

Youths will have an opportunity to obtain their boat license and sailing certificates, visit naval ships and establishments, and the opportunity to undertake pilot flight training and parachuting. The Australian Navy Cadets is a premier youth training organisation that is sponsored by the Royal Australian Navy. It provides youth activities and training within a military environment to encourage better citizens and leaders in the community.

“In an area that is as multiculturally diverse as the Western suburbs of Brisbane, a naval cadet unit will help youths from a diverse background to bond together and learn life skills and leadership that will be forever helpful to them in life and to Australia,” said Mr Chan.

Uniforms and equipment are provided free of charge to cadets. However, cadets are required to pay a levy of $5 per attendance and will be provided with lunch and full day training and activity on a Sunday from 9am to 3pm. Student recruits will have the opportunity to be promoted through the ranks, including being selected for officer training for the rank of midshipman. Staff instructors are also wanted to assist with developing and shaping the new naval unit.
