    Principles ofOperation

    In axial piston pumps, thepistons reciprocate parallelto the axis of rotation of thecylinder block. The simplesttype of axial piston pumpis the swash plate in-linedesign.

    The cylinder block in thispump is turned by the driveshaft. Pistons fitted to boresin the cylinder block are con-nected through piston shoesand a shoe plate, so that theshoes bear against an angledswash plate.

    As the block turns, the pis-ton shoes follow the swashplate, causing the pistons toreciprocate. The ports arearranged in the valve plateso that the pistons pass theinlet as they are pulled outand pass the outlet as theyare forced back in.

    The displacement of axialpiston pumps is determinedby the size and number ofpistons, as well as the strokelength which is determinedby the angle of the swashplate.

    In variable displacementmodels of the in-line pump,the swash plate is installedin a movable yoke.

    Pivoting the yoke on pin-tles changes the swash plateangle to increase or decrease

    the piston stroke.

    Introduction

    Eaton VickersM Series mobile pumps are open

    circuit, axial piston designs. A variety of controlsprovides the ability to match the pumps to each appli-cation. Efficiency of the pump controls allows down-

    sizing of system cooling needs, allowing a smallerand less expensive design to be used. Alternatively,

    cooling capacity could be kept the same and the flowcapability of the system increased, thus improving

    performance and customer satisfaction.

    A strong proven rotating group allows the pumps to

    handle pressures to 280 bar (4000 psi) continuous and320 bar (4600 psi) intermittent with less maintenance

    cost. High-load bearings and a stiff drive shaft help

    provide a pump life of 5000 hours at rated mobileconditions, reducing operating costs and extending

    operating life.

    M Series pumps feature a saddle-type yoke with

    steel-backed polymer bearings. The stiff yoke reduc-es deflection and allows even loading of bearings,

    improving life. A single control piston reduces load-ing on the yoke, resulting in reduced pump size which

    allows installation in tighter locations.

    M Series pumps operate at a level of quietness that

    exceeds the requirements of todays demanding work

    conditions. The pumps feature a unique three-pieceenvelope (flange, housing and valve block) specificallycreated for low fluid-borne and structure-borne noiselevels. Another pump feature a bimetal timing plate

    improves pump filling characteristics which, in turn,reduce fluid-borne noise and extend pump life.

    Proximity of the pump to the vehicle operatordemands a low noise level in the cab. M Series pumps

    reduce, or in some cases remove, the need for damp-ing barriers between the noise source and the opera-

    tor. This saves money on the installed cost of thesystem while improving customer comfort.

    An adjustable maximum stop provides a means oftuning flow to your system, while gauge ports allow

    monitoring of inlet and outlet conditions. These stan-dard features reduce system complexity and cost.

    Mounting flanges are offered in SAE and ISO config-

    urations, and ports are offered in SAE, ISO, and BSPin both tube and flange versions. This provides awide variety of installation opportunities for global

    machine design.

    Side- or end-ported models are available to facilitateplumbing and help fit the pump to your machinespace needs. Multiple drain ports allow many mount

    ing orientations, reducing installed costs.

    M Series pumps are capable of operating with many

    types of hydraulic fluids used in industrial and mobilsystems. High-water-content and phosphate ester

    fluids can be accommodated, in addition to the typicpetroleum based and synthetic fluids.

    Load Sensing and PressureCompensator Control Code B or C

    The pump will provide powermatching of pump output tosystem load demand, maximiz-ing efficiency and improving loadmetering characteristics of anydirectional control valve installedbetween the pump and the load.

    Load sensing ensures that thepump always provides only theamount of ow needed by theload. At the same time, thepump operating pressure adjuststo the actual load pressure plus

    a pressure differential requiredfor the control action. Whenthe system is not demandingpower, the load sense controlwill operate in an energy-savingstand-by mode.

    Typically, the differential pres-sure is that between the pres-sure inlet and service port of aproportionally controlled direc-tional valve, or a load sensingdirectional control valve. Seethe model code on page 4 fordifferential pressure settings forload sensing.

    If the load pressure exceedsthe system pressure setting,the pressure compensator de-strokes the pump. The loadsensing line must be as short aspossible and can also be usedfor remote control or unload-ing of the pump pressure. Forremote control purposes, it isrecommended that you contactyour Eaton representative forthe correct configuration of thecontrol.

    Warning:The pressure com-pensator may be adjustedbeyond the rated pressure of

    the pump. When adjusting thepressure limiter, install a0-350 bar (0-5000 psi) gagein the outlet gage port andlimit the pressure setting to thecontinuous rated pressure forthe pump displacement shownon page 7.

    This pump is intended for usewhen multiple, remote, or elec-tronically controlled compensat-ing settings, with or withoutload sensing, are desired.

    Pressure compensation isobtained when an internal plugis removed, the load-sensesignal port is kept plugged, andinternal pilot pressure is appliedto the spring chamber of thecontrol spool. For pressurecompensation with load sensing,the internal plug stays, the load-sense signal port is unplugged,and pilot pressure is externallyapplied.

    An external relief valve (notsupplied) controls spring cham-ber pressure. The externallyadjustable spring determinesthe differential pressure settingof the control. Outlet pressureis limited to the valve of thespring chamber (pressure port)pressure, plus control differential

    pressure.Spring chamber (pilot) pres-sure is separated from outletpressure by an internal orifice.Outlet pressure shifts the spoolwhen pressure drop across theorifice reaches the differentialpressure setting, and the pumpde-strokes.

    The relief valve can be mountedto an NFPA-D03/ISO 4401-03pad on the pump control, orremotely located via tapping andblanking plates installed on thepad. See Ordering Procedure,

    page 27, for more on valves andplates.

    The standard factory-set dif-ferential pressure setting ofthe pump control is 20 bar (290psi) and is not specified in thepump model number. Any otherordered differential pressure,within the controls adjustablepressure range of 17-35 bar(247-508 psi), will be specified inthe model number.
