    Warangal The Historical City

    The Kakatiya University is located in the historical town ofWarangal in northern Telengana of Andhra Pradesh. The

    University is named after the great Kakatiya Dynasty thatruled this region Warangal as capital during the twelfth and

    thirteenth centuries. The benevolent Kakatiya rulers bestowedpolitical stability, economic prosperity, linguistic and cultural

    unity, artistic splendour and literary efflorescence to the

    kingdom they built. The distinct term Kakatiya strikes anemotional chord in the hearts of the Telugu people

    The artistic beauty of the temples with excellent sculpture ofunique style, wild life sanctuaries, and the tanks glittering with

    ripples on the abode of natures beauty provide fabulous feteto the tourists. The amazing Thousand Pillared Temple, the

    Bhadrakali and the Padmakshi temples, the Warangal Fort, thedense forests of Eturunagaram and Pakal, the large lakes andother destinations are the potential tourist spots of the tricity.

    The city has great intellectual legacy. Bammera Pothana, Palkurki Somanatha, Sivadevayya, AndhraBhoja, Iswara Bhatta, Nrisimhakavi, Agasthya, Madhava Vidyaranya, Gangadevi and others adornedthe Kakatiya period and some of them formed the brain behind the foundation of the Vijayanagara

    empire. In modern times, Prajakavi Padmabhushan Kaloji is remembered with respect.

    About the University

    The University, started 1976 in a sprawling area of about 650 acres with a few and affiliatedcolleges, has now grown into an affiliating University with 25 departments. In pursuit of academic

    excellence, it has crossed the milestone of thirty three years. About 120 academic programs at

    undergraduate and postgraduate level are offered in the Faculties of Arts, Science, Commerce andBusiness Management, Social Sciences, Education, Engineering and Pharmaceutical Sciencesbesides 60 programmes under distance mode through School of Distance Learning and Continuing

    Education (SDCLE). The total enrollment of students for under-graduate programmes is around onelakh ten thousand, and for the post-graduate courses it is about 8,000.

    Giving utmost priority to the students, the University has relentlessly been striving to provide

    modern facilities. They include internet facility through campus LAN, sixteen hours of libraryfacilities, sports and games complexes, round the clock health care, placement counselling besides

    comfortable hostel facilities. Remedial courses and coaching programmes to the needy are alsoorganized through Kakatiya Adhyayana Kendram, NET Coaching Centre and Minorities Coaching

    Centre.

    The university has been re-accredited with A grade by the NAAC. The departments of Botany,Chemistry, and Pharmacy are identified by the Department of Science & Technology for funding

    under its FIST programme. The UGC is supporting the departments of Botany, PharmaceuticalSciences, Economics, Telugu and Public Administration under its SAP and DRS programmes.

    The institutions like UGC, DST, DBT, CSIR, ICSSR, ICHR, DRDO, AICTE, ICMR, German

    Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), Volks Wagen Foundation, Germany are the sponsoringagencies of the research and academic programmes of the University departments. The University

    has over the years procured state of the art research equipment and made it available at CentralInstrumentation Centre.

    The University has its Post-graduate Colleges at Nirmal, Karimnagar, Godavarikhani, Subedari

    (Hanamkonda), Khammam and Kothagudem in addtion to the main campus at Vidyaranyapuri. Ithas 570 under-graduate and post-graduate colleges (351 govt. aided, private unaided degree colleges,

    67 colleges of teacher education, 38 pharmacy colleges, 4 law colleges, 4 engineering colleges, 11university PG colleges, 56 colleges offering MBA, and 39 colleges offering MCA) under its

    jurisdiction area of four districts It has introduced vocational courses such as Industrial Chemistry,Agricultural Botany and Fishery biology at the degree level.

    University Health Centre

    Since its inception in 1976, the Health Centre has been catering to the needs of students, staff and

    their families. The services include 24 Hours Ambulance Services, ECG facility, Oxygen facility,Electric Cauthry, Suction Apparatus, Auto Analyser with Elisa Reader, facilities for giving I.V.

    Fluids, Pathological Investigations and a Day Care Centre too. The Health Centre-2, located atUniversity Arts & Science College, is extending its services to the staff and students of colleges

    situated on the second Campus at Subedari, Hanamakonda.

    Students Welfare Centre and Placement Cell

    The main motto of the center is Motivate, Assist andSettle (MAS). It seeks to motivate, guide and

    train all the students of the University in selecting the right career. It converts Learning of the

    students into Winning. The Center functions through its three wings:

    Counselling Bureau:Disseminates the information regarding various academic programs; Guides

    the students in selecting the right path; Motivates the students to improve their personality throughcareer development courses and programs; Sponsors the students to participate in inter-university

    events.

    Career Guidance Cell: Guides the students for various career and competitive opportunities open tothe students; Imparts interview, debating, group discussion and presentation skills; Prepares the

    students for entrepreneurship; Assists them with testimonials; and makes them earn while theylearn

    Student Welfare Division: Takes care of the facilities for students by redressing the grievances of

    students; Inculcates positive thinking for physical and mental health to develop an all-roundpersonality; Provides conducive atmosphere to strengthen teaching-learning process; students-

    teacher relationship; peer group relationship, etc.

    School of Distance Learning and Continuing Education (SDLCE)

    In pursuing the education policies of Government of India, the Kakatiya University has also thrownopen its portals of the pursuit of education to those of who have no direct access to classroom

    instruction. The School of Distance Learning and Continuing Education, known as SDLCE in

    popular parlance, is meeting the educational needs of a wide ranging people.

    The SDLCE has a number of notable landmarks in its twentieth year of serving students in the field

    of higher education. The SDLCE has witnessed a two-fold increasing in the number of studentsenrolled reaching its figure to cross over 36000 making it perhaps a highly valued institution. It

    offers over 62 programmes with over 680 courses from Certificate level to highest research degreePh.D. It has four regional centres and 48 study centres spread over in its region to offer various

    student support services at their doorsteps.

    The institution has evolved a number of creative activities that prompted others in the field either to

    adopt the same for themselves or to appreciate it as a model for development in its future course of

    action. They include Collaborative research is with like-minded organisations such as IndianDistance Education Association, Open Learning Society and Apex bodies like Distance EducationCouncil, New Delhi and Commonwealth of Learning, Canada, and Athabasca University,

    Canada.The SDLCE has been recognized as a Nodal Agency for undertaking Training and Researchin the field of Distance Education. This is first of its kind in the country to be established in a

    conventional university with full financial assistance from the Distance Education Council, NewDelhi. For this purpose it has created specialised institution known as Distance Education Quality

    Support and Training Institute (DEQSTI) and under its auspices it has organized several

    programmes. The SDLCE is the second institute in the country to publish a Research Journal entitledKakatiya Journal of Distance Education regularly since 1995. It is first of its kind in a country,

    established in Distance Education Institution attached to a conventional university fully funded byDistance Education Council, New Delhi. It has a specially designed studio floor, with all modern

    facilities. The SDLCE has undertaken a number of collaborations with COL, DEC, IGNOU, YCM

    Open University, IDEA, OLS and several governmental and non-governmental organisations in thefield of Open Learning and Distance Education.

    CENTERS OF EXTENSION ACTIVITIES

    Centre for Biopharmaceutics & Pharmacokinetics

    To conduct various drug interaction studies of various categories of drugs in human volunteers and

    experimental animals for establishing the possible mechanism and safety of these agents. Differentactivities of the Centre are: Pharmacokinetic drug interaction studies were performed between

    Tolbutamide and Dilitiazem in human volunteers; Time dependent effect of Dilitiazem on the

    Phramcokinetics of Theophylline; Pharmacokinetic interaction between clarithromycin andDiltiazem in humans; Pharmocokinetic interaction between Celecoxib and Rifampicin in Humans;Pharmocokinetic interaction between Metformin and Cephelaxin in Humans; Pharmocokinetic

    interaction between Tolbutamide and Clarithromycin in Humans.

    Centre for Womens Studies

    The Cetnre was established with the financial support by UGC with an objective to evolve a newthrust to the attitudes and values for stimulating desirable changes in the status of women and to

    conduct studies on relevant social issues. The Centre organized 20 programmes of diverse nature andearned appreciation of cross section of people.

    Department of English

    Started in 1967, it has got a strong footing laid by scholars from the parent department of OU. Apart

    from regular teaching and research, the faculty of the department have been active in the areas oftranslation and editing journals and anthologies. They are specialized in contemporary literature and

    thrust areas like Commonwealth Literature, Indian Writing in English, English Language Teaching,British Literature, Translation Studies, Women Studies, Literary Criticism, Comparative Literature

    and American Literature. As on June 25, 2007, as many as 81 candidates have obtained Ph.Ddegrees and about 152 candidates have got M.Phil degrees. The faculty received and completed

    several minor and major research projects sanctioned by UGC and Department of Culture, Ministry

    Human Resource Development, Govt. of India. During the last 6 years the faculty has publishedmore than 100 research papers and books.

    The Department has been bringing out a scholarly annual research journal, Kakatiya Journal ofEnglish Studies (KJES)since 1978. Some of the special issues include: Rabindranath Tagore, MulkRaj Anand, Modern Indian Aesthetic Thought, Indian English Novel, Indian Literature in

    Translation and Films,Mahasweta Devi, etc. Articles published in KJESby the faculty too havewon acclaim in the academic world, having been cited in international editions.

    The Department brought out a Souvenir to commemorate the Silver Jubilee Functions of Kakatiya

    University (1976 2001) with Abstracts of Kakatiya Dissertations in English Studies which hasreferential value as a compendium of research work done at the department during 1976-1992. The

    Department is the first in the University to contribute 110 Radio lessons on ELT and 13 on Indian

    Writing in English and two video programmes to the UGC Countrywide Classroom Programme.

    At present, the M. A. English course is offered at the University College besides three Constituent

    Colleges and four affiliated colleges of Kakatiya University. The Department offers courses with thespecializations in Linguistics, ELT, ESP, American Literature, Commonwealth Literature, Stylistics,

    Indian Writing in English, Literary Criticism, Womens Studies, Classics in Translation and Post-colonial and African-American Literature among the electives.

    Centre for English Language Training (CELT)

    Keeping in view of the need for better communication skills, a Centre for English Language

    Training (CELT) has been established with an objective to impart training in Spoken English andcommunication skills to the students of the University as well as the general public with a state-of-

    the-art Digital Language Laboratory. The CELT offers programmes like Spoken English forbeginners, Corporate Communication and Soft Skills for professionals, Orientation Course in

    Teaching Communication Skills for teachers and Grammar and Pronunciation for the schoolstudents.

    The Telangana Study Centre

    The UGC, New Delhi, has sanctioned an amount of Rs.35.00 lakh to the University to establish

    Telangana Study Centre and the Department of Economics, KU has been identified as the NodalCentre for the Centre and constituted Advisory Committee with The Head, Department of

    Economics, KU as Director. It has built up necessary library and computer facilities to carry out theserious studies related to Telangana.

    The Dr. Ambedkar Study Centre

    The UGC, New Delhi, has released an amount of Rs. 8.25 lakh for starting Dr. Ambedkar Study

    Centre at the University. The Centre started functioning in March 2006. It organised two seminarson Ambedkars Vision of Dalit Uplift and its Contemporary Relevance in 2006 and 2008.

    Campus Networking

    In the X Plan, the University, with the grant from UGC, has provided the Campus Networking

    connecting all the departments/sections/offices of the University spread over 2.5 kilometer radius. Itis done with Gigabit Backbone Fibre Connectivity using star topology along with required

    infrastructure facilities with servers. The University, under the Campus Networking Scheme, hasprovided internet connectivity of 1 Mbps bandwidth to all the departments and offices located both

    on the Campus I & II. Apart from this, the University has access to the 512 Kbps bandwidth

    Administration

    The CFRAC will have an independent office with three main activities of dealing with foreignadmissions, entering into MoUs and extending research and teaching consultancy services.

    Currently, it operates from the Office of the HOD, English, KU.

    Students Enrolment

    The Centre for Foreign Relations, Research and Consultancy (CFRAC) has so far attended to 91admissions and enquiries from ninecountries such as Bangladesh, Oman, Italy, Iran, Libya, Saudi

    Arabia, Sri Lanka, Uganda and the USA. It has formulated the consultancy rules of the universityand got them approved. The Director has prepared an impressive prospectus titled INFORMAin 20

    pages for the foreign admissions.

    KU became a partner institution in ERAMUS Projectfor two-way mobility between KU and EU. KU is the only university

    in AP and the second one in the south to have this rareprivilege. Under the scheme, Carmine from Italy is doing his

    project work at KITS with Prof Guru Rao. Several scholarsfrom KU at UG, PG, Doctoral, Post-doctoral level, and the

    staff can be sponsored to Europe every year under ERAMUSProject and EU grants the scholarship. The project

    implementation was evaluated by Dr Sevilla Leowinata on October 22, 2010 at KU.

    Two from Uganda, four from Iran have joined SDLCE courses. Two Bangladesh students joinedVidya Jyothi College. Three Iranians, M.Sc. (Bio-technology) at UC, KU, eight Iranians B.A. and

    B.Com., two from Uganda joined B.Pharmacy at UCPSc, KU, and two more are expected. TwoIranians have applied for LL.M. and Ph.D. at University Law College, fourteen Iranians have

    applied for Ph.D. in Commerce and Business Management, seven in English, three in Physics, two inMathematics, Political Science, Education and Bio-technology, one each in Chemistry, Sociology,

    Computer Science, Law, one Iranian for History & Tourism Management, one for B. Tech. (CSE)

    and eleven for Spoken English course at CELT, KU.

    Foreign Students (Alumni)

    Students from Italy, Iran and other countries obtained their research degrees from KU. Ms Letizia

    Alterno(Italian) obtained M.Phil in English from KU. She has since completed her Ph.D from theUniversity of Manchester.

    Admission Procedure for Foreign Students

    The intending foreign student should request for Informa for Foreign Students that containsApplication Form from the Director, CFRAC, Kakatiya University, Vidyaranyapuri, Warangal

    506009 AP INDIA.

    Enclosures to the ApplicationThe following should be enclosed with the application form:

    1. Two certified copies of the marks sheet/memo of the qualifying examination (together withcertified translated version if the documents are in a language other than English).

    2. Two certified copies of the qualifying examination (together with certified translated versionwhere applicable).

    3. A copy of the syllabus/curriculum of the candidates UG/PG Degree course (together withcertified translated version where applicable).

    4. Two copies of the relevant pages of the passport of the student.5. A non-refundable registration fee in the form of Demand Draft drawn in favour of the Registrar

    Fund Account, Kakatiya University, Warangal.

    The Director of CFRAC will forward the applications received from the prospective InternationalStudents to the Deputy Registrar (Academic) in order to ascertain eligibility, and the Academic

    Branch of the University will issue an Eligibility Certificate. Later, Provisional Admission Letterwill be issued by the Director and the Certificate of Affiliation by the Registrar.

    No Objection Certificate

    Foreign students intending to pursue research programmes such as Ph.D must obtain a No

    Objection Certificate (NOC) from the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MoHRD),

    Government of India. It is possible to apply for the NOC while applying to the University by sendinga copy of the filled-in Application Form for Admission Eligibility along with the necessaryenclosures. Alternatively, they can wait till they get their Provisional Admission Letter and then

    apply to the MoHRD, Govt. of India, enclosing a copy of the Provisional Admission Letter.Without the NOC issued by the MoHRD, it will not be possible to obtain Research Visa and

    consequently the University cannot finalize their admission. The application for NOC may be sentto:

    However, the condition of NOC does not apply to the foreign students sponsored by EU on

    ERAMUS Project, ICCR, Ministry of External Affairs (Govt. of India), since these students areissued Research Visa at the time of leaving for India.

    Decision on Admission

    Once the applications are processed, the candidates will be intimated about their admission status

    and, if they are found eligible, the Provisional Admission Letter will be issued by the Universityfor the purpose of obtaining Student Visa. This Student Visa should be endorsed only to Kakatiya

    University. Students applying for transfers should produce NOC from the Institution / Universityconcerned.

    Medical Test

    After obtaining visa the student should travel to India and report to the CFRAC of the University.

    He/she will be then asked to undergo a Medical Test for HIV. If he/she is found HIV negative,he/she will be given final admission into a college. Fees as suggested in the Appendix have to be

    paid at this stage.

    Accommodation

    Where possible the CFRAC will accommodate the overseas students in the hostels on the campus.

    They are however free to hire private accommodation close to the college or in the hostels wherethey study. CFRAC will assist them.

    Guidelines for Admission into Ph.D

    Admissions to Ph.D Programs are made all through the year since foreign students from across the

    world complete their qualifying degree (PG) at various times during the year.

    The following are the guidelines governing the admission of overseas students into Ph.D of KakatiyaUniversity.

    1. Applications are processed as soon as possible and Provisional Admission Letters are issued to

    the students.2. Self-financing foreign students should approach the Ministry of Human Resource Development,

    Government of India, for obtaining No Objection Certificate. There is a specific proformacalled Certificate of Affiliation to be filled in and submitted in six sets to the MoHRD.

    3. The NOC from the MoHRD is mandatory because foreign students will not be issuedResearch Visa by the Indian Embassies, High Commissions and Consulates abroad.

    4.

    On the students reporting at the CFRAC with a valid Research Visa, the admission processwill be initiated and final letter of admission addressed to the Dean of the Faculty concerned is

    issued, with copies marked to the Principal of the College, Head of the Department andChairperson of BoS concerned.

    5. The foreign student will then report to the Dean of the Faculty with the letter of admission andformally the join the Ph.D Programme.

    6. The Dean shall admit the scholar and initiate the process of identifying the Research Guide /Supervisor in consultation with the HoD and Chairperson of BoS of the Department concerned.

    7. The Dean will mark copies of the Joining Report of the foreign scholar to the Principal of theCollege, Head of the Department, Chairperson of BoS concerned, the Director, CFRAC and the

    Deputy Registrar (Academic).8. For all purposes the date of reporting of the foreign student to the Dean shall be the date of

    joining the Ph.D programme. The annual tuition fee will be accounted from this date of joining.9. The foreign scholar should finalize the topic of research in consultation with the supervisor and

    communicate the synopsis of the project to the Dean of the Faculty through proper channel.10.The Dean shall finalize the topic in consultation with the Supervisor, HoD and Chairperson of

    BoS and issue orders marking copies to the Principal, HoD, Chairperson of BoS, DeputyRegistrar (Academic) and Director, CFRAC.

    11.The foreign scholars should further note that the duration of the research programme, Pre-Ph.Dexamination, syllabus, seminars, submission procedure of the thesis, evaluation, etc are the same

    as in the case of Indian students. The booklet Degree of Doctor of Philosophy: Rules andRegulations (w.e.f 9 Oct. 2006) published by the University will give complete details in this

    regard. A copy of this booklet can be obtained from the Academic Section on request.

    10. 11 Departments (Botany, Chemistry, Pharmacy [rated one of the best in the country],Economics, Telugu, Commerce & Business Management, Zoology, Public Administration andHuman Resource Management, History and Tourism Management, Geology, Bio-technology,

    Microbiology, Mathematics) have SAP and DRS programs. Highest number of Major Research

    11. UGC, DST, DBT, CSIR, ICHR, DRDO, AICTE, ICMR, German Academic Exchange Service(DAAD), Volks Wagon Foundation, Germany are sponsoring 245 research and academic

    programs. Procured state of the art research equipment and made it available at Central

    Instrumentation Centre. Collaborative research with the University of Bonn, Germany,

    University of Reading, UK, CENARGEN, Brazil, LMU, Munich, Verona University, Italy,

    CASD, China, Perth Western University, Australia, Mississippi State University, USA,

    Groningen University, the Netherlands, IBS, Shanghai, BRC, Hungary, Eritrea Institute of

    Technology, Asmara, besides Reddy Labs, IIT, Kharagpur, University of Hyderabad, etc.

    12. In the last 5 years, 306 M. Phil degrees and 530 Ph.D degrees awarded. 220 M. Phil and 623Ph.D scholars are currently on rolls.
