WOMEN’S HISTORY MONTH DISPLAY AND PRESENTATION

STILLWATER - In recognition of Women’s History Month, Sara-toga National Historical Park will offer a free month-long display on women’s clothing in the 18th century, as well as free lecture on Sunday, March 16, 2014 at 1:30pm, with guest speaker Samantha Hall-Saladino discussing Shaker commu-nity founder Mother Ann Lee. Mini exhibit: “Why Did Women Wear That?” For centuries, it was the norm for women and girls to wear stays or corsets. During the Revolutionary War, these back-lacing garments encased the body in a hard, form-fitted shell which limited movement and comfort. This exhibit explores how stays were made, what they were made of, and answers the question on everyone’s mind: why did women wear them? Special program: “Mother Ann Lee – Founder of the Shakers” Shaker Heritage Society education coordinator Samantha Hall-Saladino will speak about Mother Ann Lee, the revolutionary founder of the Shaker movement, and about the Shakers during the American Revolution. Sara-toga National Historical Park is located between Rt. 4 and Rt. 32 in the Town of Stillwater, NY. For more information, please contact the visitor center by calling 518-670-2985 or check our website at www.nps.gov/sara or our Facebook site at www.facebook.com/saratoganhp

INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT SAINT PATRICKMany people know St. Patrick’s Day as a time to let their hair down and participate in the often rowdy revelry that has become synonymous with the holiday. Parades and loud music as well as owing drinks make Patty’s Day a favorite for people of all ethnic backgrounds. But revel-ers might be surprised to know that the holiday’s namesake was an interesting gure whose impact on the world can still be felt today.

* Though he is forever linked to the Emerald Isle, Saint Patrick was actually born in England, and his initial introduction to Ireland was anything but pleasant. That’s because St. Patrick was captured by pirates as a child and brought to Ireland, where he spent six years in slavery. After escaping captivity, he eventually returned to Ireland as a missionary.

* Saint Patrick’s work as a Christian missionary incorporated some pagan beliefs to which many natives of Ireland had previously subscribed. He combined those beliefs with the Chris-tian sacrament, and the Celtic cross traces its origins to this combination of pagan beliefs and Christianity.

* Despite growing up in a family with strong ties to organized religion, Saint Patrick himself was not raised in a particularly religious household. Though his grandfather was a member of the clergy and his mother was a close relative of St. Martin of Tours, Saint Patrick’s childhood home was not especially religious nor was it one that placed a strong emphasis on education. In fact, Saint Patrick admitted later in life that his lack of formal education had long been a source of embarrassment for him.

* While in captivity, Saint Patrick tended sheep under a high priest of Druidism, a Pagan sect that had considerable in uence over Ireland at the time. Despite that, Saint Patrick became deeply devoted to Christianity during his captivity, when he became determined to free the Irish from Druidism.

* After eeing captivity, Saint Patrick said that the idea to ee came to him in a dream in which a voice promised him that, if he ed, he would safely nd his way home to England. So he convinced sailors to let him board their ship. This was a ship those on board would soon abandon, eventually landing in France, where they wandered 200 miles in 28 days. But true to his dream, Saint Patrick was eventually reunited with his family in England.

* Despite his determination to free the Irish from Druidism, Saint Patrick was initially met with much resistance from Irish natives. But his persistence would eventually pay o , as he convinced a growing number of Pagan Druids that they were worshiping idols under a belief system that was ensuring their captivity and not their salvation.

EXPLAINING THE MYTHICAL LEPRECHAUN

Celtic culture is ripe with legends and myths that help to en-tertain and explain the mysteries of life. Among such lore are leprechauns, which are mythological gures that continue to impart whimsy into St. Patrick’s Day celebrations even now.

The word “leprechaun” is derived from the Irish lu chorpain, meaning “small body.” Various attributes have been used to describe leprechauns. While the origins and the history sur-rounding leprechauns di er, one common thread is that these creatures are surrounded in magic. Some believed leprechauns were descendents of the Goddess Danu and the Tuatha De Danaan. They inhabited Ireland long before the Celts arrived, and when the Celts did come, brandishing iron swords that could penetrate the leprechauns’ magic, lepre-chauns ed to underground abodes in the soil shielded by magical, hidden entrances. Some say leprechauns still reside under the damp soil.

Other stories describe leprechauns as smart, devious crea-tures of fairy folk who were the only fairies to have a profes-sion other than cattle trading. Leprechauns were shoemak-ers to the fairies who took the shape of men wearing green or red coats and hats and participated in mischief. Lepre-chauns hoarded all of their gold coins in a pot under a rain-bow. Catching a leprechaun was tricky, as these “wee folk,” as

they were often described in folk tales, were quite adept at remaining out of arm’s reach. Should one be captured by a human, folklore stated that the leprechaun must grant three wishes to earn his release.

Some viewed leprechauns as serious sorts, keeping people away from sacred places and helping to control people’s be-haviors. Historians believe this was one for leaders to estab-lish societal rules.

Descriptions of leprechauns and tales of their antics have sur-vived in Ireland for centuries. When the Irish began emigrat-ing to America during the Great Potato Famine, they brought with them their mythology and stories. However, the tale of

the leprechaun has changed over time.

The Irish-American view of the leprechaun di ered from the more traditional Irish view. Americans saw leprechauns as frivolous and silly. Leprechauns were depicted with broad, pug noses and out-of-style ratty clothing. Many negative stereotypes Americans directed at the swarms of Irish immi-grants arriving in the United States were exempli ed in the insensitive and, at times, hateful illustrations of leprechauns.

Leprechaun mythology has been alive and well in Ireland for more than a thousand years and will likely live on for centu-ries more.

they were often described in folk tales, were quite adept at

Watch Archie’s video. He’s a handsome mutt with a nice nature.

Hi Friends, I’m Whitey. I came to the humane society with my “wife” Bella. Our parents couldn’t care for us anymore so we are waiting patiently for a new family

to love. I am a little more outgoing than Bella and love to play and explore. We’ve never been around kids so a quiet home might be best for us. I have a beautiful, snowy white coat and love to sit and be

brushed. Do you have room in your house and heart for me and maybe my sweetheart too?

My name is Amelia. I was surrendered by my previ-ous owners because they could no longer care for me.

I am a timid gal, but if you give me time and a quiet home I will definitely warm up to you. I previously lived with dogs, other cats, ferrets and rabbits! The

folks here at the shelter have also discovered I love to be brushed, so this may help me get comfortable in a new environment. Please ask to meet me, as I would

very much like a forever home.

BYWAY SUMMITCLIFTON PARK - The Mohawk Towpath Byway and its municipal partners are planning a Byway Summit on March 20, 2014, at the Century House in Latham. The purpose of the summit will be to accept an action plan for scenic conservation and corridor enhancement, to optimize economic development, heritage and eco-tourism and the local quality of life in this portion of the Mohawk Valley. Municipalities will be asked to identify and evaluate projects and initia-tives. The Mohawk Towpath Byway was established in 2003 by New York State. It follows the route of the historic Erie Canal between Cohoes, Waterford and Schenectady. As one travels the Byway they discover the story of the waterway west, the Erie Canal and the role our com-munities played in the westward expansion of the country and the Industrial Revolution. It became one of America’s Byways© in 2005. Congressman Paul Tonko is the invited keynote speaker for the event. The Mohawk Towpath Scenic Byway Coalition is the not-for-profit cor-poration consisting of the eight municipalities through which the Byway passes over local, county, state and federal highway segments within Clifton Park, Colonie, Cohoes, Halfmoon, Niskayuna, Schenectady and Waterford.

PRAYER TO THEBLESSED VIRGIN(Never known to fail)Oh, most beautiful flower of Mt. Carmel, fruitful vine splendor of Heaven. Blessed Mother of the Son of God. Immaculate Virgin, assist me in my necessity. Oh, Star of the Sea, help me and show me, herein you are my mother. Oh, Holy Mary, Mother of God, Queen of Heaven and Earth! I humbly beseech you from the bottom of my heart to answer me in this necessity. There are none that can withstand your power. Oh, show me herein you are my mother. Oh, Mary con-ceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee (3x). Holy Mother, I place this cause in your hands (3x). Sweet Mother, I place this cause in your hands (3x). Holy Spirit, you who solve all problems, light all roads so that I can attain my goal, you who gave me the divine gift to forgive and forget all evil against me and that in all instances in my life you are with me. I want in this short prayer to thank you for all things as you confirm once again that I never want to be separated from you in eternal glory. Thank you for your mercy towards me and mine. The person must say this prayer 3 consecutive days, after 3 days the request will be granted. This prayer must be published after the favor is granted. R.M.R.

PROTECTING YOUR HIGH-MILEAGE VEHICLE

(NAPS)—These days, many drivers are fi nding ways to keep their vehicles on the road longer. Having an odometer that reads 100,000 miles or more need not mean the vehicle is on its last legs. It may just mean you should stick to a regular maintenance schedule and take advantage of automotive products that help extend the life of the vehicle.

These tips can help:

• Use the right gas. Unless your manufac-turer’s manual says the vehicle requires a high-octane gasoline, it will probably run with no problems on regular unlead-ed. The diff erence in price can be as

much as 30 cents a gallon. Your money is better spent on maintenance than at the pump.

• Cut down warm-ups and eliminate excessive idling. Older cars may need to warm up briefl y, but letting it idle for a long time before you put it in drive is not better. In fact, a vehicle just sitting there can suff er stress on the components and burns fuel less effi ciently.

• Get motor oil designed for high mileage. If there are over 75,000 miles on the odometer, consider a formula designed for high-mileage engines, such as Royal Purple’s HMX oil. In addition to proprietary additive technology, it contains addi-tives to reduce internal wear and condition engine seals.

It’s a common misconception about vehicles with high mile-age that you should not use synthetic motor oil because it will remove deposits and restrict oil fl ow. In fact, one of the benefi ts of using high-mileage synthetic oil such as HMX is that the detergents in the additives in the product clean out the deposits in the engine. Maintaining cleanliness will pro-mote the longevity of the engine.

• Tender Loving Care. If your vehicle needs repairs, ad dress

them as needed and don’t let them go until you find yourself stranded. These small steps can ensure that you’ll be able to enjoy your vehicle for many more miles to come.

Lighting the “Fuze” For Upstate Manufacturing

There’s a lot of talk about Tech Valley’s manufacturers and the excitement generated by modern, high-tech businesses. Giant companies surround our peaceful, southern Saratoga County suburbs, bringing opportu-nity and a relatively high standard of living to a gen-eration of workers. The optimism isn’t confined to large companies, as smaller entrepreneurs try their hand at marketing a new invention or business concept. For example, independent firms such as Carma Systems, Inc., a local manufacturer of computerized monitoring systems for fleet vehicles, are developing cutting-edge management software technology. Nick Cosimano, EVP of Business Development, is one of the talented busi-nesspeople you’ll find at chamber mixers these days, eager to demonstrate the versatility of his company’s products. For every success story like Carma Systems, there are many other startups who struggle to get their business off the ground. For this reason a new Federally-funded initiative has been established, to assist small and medium sized manufacturing companies in obtaining resources to improve and grow their businesses. Called FuzeHub, it’s comprised of dedicated and ex-perienced professionals who act as a rapid response team to address urgent and immediate concerns of inquiring businesses. FuzeHub is supported by organiza-tions such as the Center for Economic Growth in Albany, and the Empire State Development Corporation. Next week, on Thursday, March 20, 2014, the Capi-

tal Region Chapter of the American Marketing Association and The Chamber of Southern Saratoga County will be co-sponsoring a luncheon at the Century House in Latham to help local manufacturing interests become familiar with the capabilities of the FuzeHub initiative. Executive Direc-tor Laura Mann will join Kim Lloyd, CEO of Rock the Dead-line and Content Director Steve Melito in a presentation on a new web portal fueled by content marketing. New techniques in marketing businesses are vital tools neces-sary to compete in today’s highly competitive economy. Visit www.southernsaratoga.org/events for more details on this exciting event.
