Teacher Study Tours to TurkeyCOLONIE – The International Center of the Capital Region (ICCR) in collaboration with the Turkish Cultural Center Albany (TCCA) would like to cordially invite teachers to attend an ori-entation and overview for a recently funded program entitled Spotlight on Turkey. The workshop is scheduled for Tuesday, February 28 from 6-8pm at the Town of Colonie William K. Stanford Library located at 629 Albany Shaker Road in Loudonville. The event is free of charge and will include an overview of the program and a presentation by local Turkish American community members from TCCA who will give a welcome, description of history and culture, and provide samplings of Turkish cuisine. Additionally, of those who attend the workshop and subsequently fi ll out an application, three Capital region educators will be chosen to have the opportunity to travel to Turkey for approximately two weeks during the summer of 2012. MVC Scholarship CompetitionCAPITAL REGION – In 1992, the fi rst Mohawk Valley Chorus scholarship winner was selected. The annual competition is upon us once again. It is open to any high school junior or senior within the area: Albany, Fulton, Hamilton, Montgomery, Saratoga, Schenectady and Schoharie counties. Each applicant must submit a tape or CD of two selections (one should be a classical number) and three letters of reference (at least one from a vocal music teacher) to scholarship chairman Gay O’Brien, Box 2440, Ballston Spa, NY 12020. Deadline is February 20. A panel of qualifi ed MVC judges will review the tapes and fi nalists may be asked to perform at a live audi-tion. The winner, who will be awarded a $500 scholarship to be used at the student’s discretion, will be contacted by the end of February and will perform at the annual Classics concert March 11. Application forms are being mailed to school and private music teachers throughout the area this month. They may also be obtained from Mrs. O’Brien, 885-3781. Funds for the scholarship are raised through a weekly 50-50 raffl e conducted by the chorus and special donations ear-marked for the scholarship fund. (A)

1. Choking hazards: Infants and toddlers are often enamored with their older sibling’s toys. These toys may have small parts or magnets, and can be chok-ing hazards for little ones. Be sure that small toys are not left strewn around.

Choking can also occur when

babies try to eat foods that are too sophisticated for unde-veloped teeth. Pieces of food should be no larger than a dime to help prevent against chok-ing. Children under 10 months old should only be given pureed food, or soft foods until molars for chewing and mashing de-velop.

2. Stairs: Falls account for many childhood injuries. Falls down stairs can be especially danger-ous. Be sure to block stairs with sturdy gates from investigative children. There are gates that are designed for the top and bottom

of stairs to make it easier to open and navigate for adults.

3. Water: It takes only a few inches of water to drown a young child. Never leave a baby unat-tended when water is around.

Secure toilet seats and be sure to keep within arm’s reach of the child when he or she is bathing.

4. Tipped-over furniture: There were 31 deaths in 2006 (and 3,000 injuries) resulting from

furniture and other household items, like TVs, tipping over and crushing children. Don’t place tempting items atop furniture. If furniture seems unsteady, al-ways use anchors to bolt it to the wall.

Valentine’s Day is often a time for adult couples to show their affection. But Valentine’s Day is a fun time for kids, too. Kids often enjoy handing out and receiving Valentine’s Day cards, and parents often enjoy seeing their kids’ crushes.

Another Valentine’s Day tra-dition kids enjoy is the annual Valentine’s Day party. Parents hosting the party this year can make the most of their holi-day party with the following tips.

* Let kids make the invita-tions. Kids will get a kick out of making Valentine’s Day in-vitations for all their friends. * Don’t forget the candy and cupcakes. Kids might have ulterior motives for enjoy-ing Valentine’s Day that go beyond giving and receiving valentines. Candy and cup-cakes are as much a part of Valentine’s Day for kids as they are for adults. Chocolate and cupcakes are favorites for kids and adults alike on Valentine’s Day, so be sure to have some on hand for the party.

* Host a few Valentine’s themed games. Instead of standard fare like “Pin the Tail On the Donkey,” spice things up for Valentine’s Day with a few games with a Val-entine’s Day theme. If the

Attention High School Age Hockey PlayersTROY – The Troy Albany Junior River Rats midget youth hockey team is looking for additional players, including a goal-tender, to fi ll its roster. (MS) -- Cold weather can play havoc with a vehicle’s battery, threatening starting and the ability to handle winter’s increased elec-trical loads.

“A conventional 12-volt bat-tery maintains about 40 percent of its capacity at 0 degrees F, so it’s very important to make sure the vehicle’s battery is up to the task when the weather turns re-ally cold. Most engines won’t start when cranking voltage drops too far below 12 volts, and a battery loses some of its available voltage and cold cranking amps (CCA) as it ages. So it’s a good idea to take precautions as the chill envelopes us,” said Andreas Tobler, Product Manager, Energy Systems for Bo-sch (www.boschautoparts.com).

Tobler suggested these precautions to avoid cold weather battery prob-lems:

* Check all battery and starter con-nections. Make sure they are tight and cables are top quality and in good condition.

* Make sure the alternator is op-erating at full capacity to keep the engine running and operate lights, windshield wipers and heater fan while keeping the battery charged. Replace it if questionable.

* Have the battery tested to make sure it has suffi cient capacity and is new enough to handle frigid temperature starting, heavy elec-trical demand. Install a fresh bat-tery if needed.

* If the battery charge is low, have it charged or use a modern porta-ble battery charger to keep it in top form. An occasional charge can keep the battery ready, as well as revitalize an exhausted battery.
