You Did Not Have To Be A FutureBride.......... to enjoy this exhibition of bridal wearand was well worth the trip to MarshamsAll Saints Church on Saturday 5th July.

I make no claim of knowing much aboutwedding dresses, but Lis and I were reallyimpressed by the collectionon display around the church.

The workmanship involved in creating thesedresses was quite simply amazing.

The dress (pictured right) was made in 1913and would have been worn by a bride no

more that 4 foot 10 inches tall, if that.

Every dress on display included informationabout the dress and the wedding date, oftenwith photos taken on the day, many of themwere at least fty years ago.

I have to say how much we enjoyedvisiting the exhibition of weddingdresses in All Saints Churtch inMarsham on Saturday July 5th.

You really have to admire the workand design involved in producingthese dresses.(Front & page 6)

Having been married now for 23 yrs.in a 2nd marriage, I still remembermy rst wife selecting her wedding

dress and the process involved.I have to say that my 2nd weddingwas a great deal easier as dear Lissimply found a dress in a charityshop in Stamford where we wereliving at the time.

If I remember correctly we spent atotal of about 16 on our weddingclothesbetween us.

I must apologise for being unable todownload any of the photos thatI took of the Mundesley SummerFete on June 28th, digital cameraswho invented them?

We did enjoy the event, particlarlythe Bar-B-Que, the delicious cakeand listening to the Jazz Band.

How we both won a cuddly soft toyeach from the Womens RBL stallI do not know. One day they willbecome a present for someonessmall child.

I would like to thank Bob White, ofthe Mundesley Coastwatch for hisletter about their forthcoming FunDay(See Page 4) what a great lineup of prizes you can win on August23rd! (The day before my Birthday)

As you will see from his letter, therafe tickets are now on sale innumerous places.

I must hand it to Karen & her teamof jolly souls at the Cromer N&Pfor spending ALL day cyclingto raise money for Marie Curie.(see Page 8)

I would like to thank very muchCindy Johnson for her reveiw ofthe show on the Pier of Viva la

Drag and I am glad she enjoyedit so much. (See Page 12)

Dear Philip,At the 2013 County Council elections the Tories

lost control of the Council and a Labour/LibDem coalition took control of the Councilsupported by UKIP and Green councillors.

The incoming Cabinet under the leadership ofGeorge Nobbs inherited a number of majorproblems from the Tories, not least failingChildrens services, issues concerning AdultSocial Care and a contract for an incineratorwhich was not wanted by a large proportionof the residents but which would cost millionsof pouns to cancel.

The Council was also, as a result of the Torygovernments policies required to make largesavings to its budget.

Dear Philip,I felt I had to write to tellyour readers about theoverwhelming generosity that I as treasurer of Mundesley Coastwatchhave encounteredsince moving to Mundesley 2 & half years ago.

Firstly, beinga foreigner (Northampton viaLondon) I was amazed at what a friendly villageMundesley is, people actually talk to each otherhere. I digress.

Late last year Coastwatch decided to hold afund raising day, trying to make it familyorientated, thus our Family Fun-Daycame aboutand we decided that a Big rafe with Big prizeswould be a good attraction, and a well knownperson to draw the rafe and have been verylucky to secure the company ofBecky Jagoone of ITVs presenters to ll this role.

Prizes in our rafe include a 39 Colour T.V.a 100 Drinks hamper, a Food hamper, Mealsfor 2, a Broads tour, Tickets to the Zoo, NorthNorfolk railway trip, Theatre tickets and manysmaller but just as worthwhile prizes.

Rafe tickets are available from: The Ship Inn,Mundesley Gallery, The Haig Club, CountryPickings and the Lighthouse Inn in Walcottand also from myself at: 31, Cowper Close,

    Mundesley. Telephone:01263 726 859

Other attractions include a Bouncy Castle,Gladiator, Bar-B-Q, Tombolas, Craft stalls,Skittles, Hoopla, Face-Painting, FairgroundOrgans and much more.

The people of Mundesley have been brilliant insupporting us & I would like to thank everyonewho has helped us in bringing our Fun-DayonSaturday 23rd August to fruition.

    Kind Regards

    Bob White, Treasurer,Mundesley Coastwatch.

Dear Philip,Firstly, thank you for publishing my originalletter regarding my attempt to compete in theBrownlee Brothers Petworth House triathlon.

As you will recall, I was trying to raise fundsfor the Cure Parkinsons Trust following afriends diagnosis of the illness at age 38.

I am pleased to inform that I completed the task

on Sunday June 15th in 1 hour & 58 minutes.

As part of my preparations I also held an acousticconcert and subjected myself to an upper bodywax at the Vernon Arms in Southrepps in orderto boost the coffers and as a result of the night,my Just Giving page, sponsorship form at theCorner stores in Trunch and people literallyjust handing me money, I am pleased to tellyou that I raised a staggering 2,072.06.

I can honestly say that Im overwhelmed by thisgure as Id originally hoped to raise a coupleof hundred pounds and I would like to takethis opportunity to say a few thank yous.

Firstly to my friends, family and everyonewho has donated and offered much neededencouragement and support along the way. Then to you Philip for publicising my

endeavours in the Crab Tales. Thanks to Jenny and Chris at Trunch CornerStores for holding my sponsorship form anddonation box.

upon elected Councillors what were seen to beservices which should be prioritised for spending.

The budget which was nally approved by theFull County Council although making largercuts than we would have wished, largely reected our priorities.

At the end of a difcult year the Leader of theCounty Council produced a report to Full Council.

As it documents the challenges faced by andachievements of a minority Labour led admin-

istration it should be of interest to party members. It can be found by following this link to theCounty Council website: http://bit.ly/1j1C387

One of the ladies helping at thisevent was Brenda Watson (NeeJones) who has lived in the samehouse in Marsham for 46 years.

She was born, christened, conrmed& also married in this chuch in 1968.

As well as samples of wedding photographsthere were displays from wedding cars andother wedding suppliers.

Everyone I spoke to at the exhibition reallyenjoyed seeing all the dresses.

One of the wedding dresses, worn in 1972,was made of red material and looked greatas it also did in the photo taken on the day.(See below)

Among the wedding dresses on display wasthe one belonging to Jacquie Wathen whichwas missing an arm.

Here is how it got lost.

Although the wedding took place in London,Jacquies parents were at the time living inthe USA and Jacquie & Rod were in Uganda.Everyone gathered in London for the wedding,

but directly after it Jacquies parents returnedto the US and a dear Aunt was left in chargeof the wedding dress and decided to give Jsparents a lovely surprise with a studio photoof J in her dress, in colour (the ofcialphotographer used black and white).

When Jacquie and Roderick returned from theirhoneymoon the photos were taken, then theywere off back to Uganda.

The arm of the dress was removed so that thecolour in the photo could be made an exactmatch - and it was never seen again!

The studio photos were given to Js parents butsadly they did not like them: Jacquies hair hadnot been done the same way; she had a large

spot on her face (too much good food on thehoneymoon!); and the tiara was missing as ithad been returned to Jacquies Granny.

In addition, Js parents were presented with alarge bill from the photo studio. They weredefnitely not happyand only after severalyears, after they returned from the USA, didthey discover the dress only had one arm.

    Doing Their BitFor Marie Curie

On Friday June 27th, along with numerousother customers, I got roped into doing astint of cycling in the N & P BuildingSociety, in Cromer.

Branch Manager, Karen Chastney (Above)encouraged any & everyone to get on theirbike to cycle for this worthy charity.

Tina Youngman rmly assured me that she hadalready done her bit on the bike (Top on Right)while a new member of staff, Robert French(Far right above) was doing his bit towardsthis worthy charity.

I am in no doubt that this branch of the N&Pwill have happily achieved the 120 miles theyplanned to cover on the day and managed toraise over 150.00 in doing so.

Karen Chastney, is one of those people whoyoucannot be like and admire for her energyin getting any and everything done.

Yes, I too did my bit for the branch fundraising for but not for very many minutesI am afraid. (On Left) PK

Today with the temperature low and the windhigh, one does have to wonder when oursummer will start, if at all.

Thursday July 10th is a long way off beinga warm and jolly day in Norfolk and I guessanywhere in the UK or if youve seen theTour De France on the telly, it is alongway from being warm there, either.

We have all learnt about the dangers of globalwarming going on and how we should considerthis serious matter by protecting ourselves.

Be assured I will, when it starts!

In the meantime, while walking the dog alongthe coast, I have seen several fellow nativestaking a dip in the North Sea, but I have yet

to envy or join themin their behaviour, byripping off my gearand taking a dipwith them.

When the wind is notripping along I do tryto go sailing on theBroads with a picnicand thermos of hotcoffee once or twicea week, but have notbeen out for overa week or so.

I really enjoy livingin Norfolk and sailingwhen I can but so farthis year, the climateseems to be workingagainst me and I guessmany others.

Thankfully the Wimbledon Centre Court nowhas a rolling roof to keep the players dry andhappy but having a roll over roof over all theBroads is asking rather too much and whatwould happen to the wind?

You have to consider this, as well.

Let us all hope that by the time this issue out

we will be look for and applying the factor 30plus suntan lotion all over our tender bodiesand enjoying the summer type weather and ifthe sun does come out again, check out thearticle on Page 14 about how to cope with it.

Who ever said that I would complain?

ladders dont meet regulations. They wont letanyone up there until a proper scaffolding canbe erected.Nelson: Then get me the ships carpenterwithout delay, Hardy.

Hardy:Hes busy knocking up a wheelchairaccess to the foredeck Admiral.

Nelson:Wheelchair access? Ive never heardanything so absurd.

Hardy:Health & safety again, sir. We haveto provide a barrier-free environment for thedifferently abled.

Nelson:Differently abled? Ive only one arm& one eye and I refuse even to hear mention ofthe word. I didnt rise to the rank of admiral byplaying the disability card.

Hardy: Actually, sir, you did. The Royal Navy

is under represented in the areas of visualimpairment and limb deciency.

Nelson:Whatever next ? Give me full sail. The salt spray beckons.

Hardy:A couple of problems there too, sir.Health & safety wont let the crew up therigging without hard hats. And they dontwant anyone breathing in too much salt -havent you seen the adverts ?

Nelson: Ive never heard such infamy. Breakout the cannon and tell the men to stand by toengage the enemy.

Hardy:The men are a bit worried aboutshooting at anyone, Admiral.

    Nelson:What ? This is mutiny !

Hardy:Its not that, sir. Its just that theyreafraid of being charged with murder if theyactually kill anyone. Theres a couple oflegal-aid lawyers on board, watchingeveryone like hawks.

Nelson:Then how are we to sink theFrenchies and the Spanish ?

    Hardy:Actually, sir, were not.

    Nelson:Were not ?

Hardy: No, sir. The French and the Spanishare our European partners now. According tothe Common Fisheries Policy, we shouldnteven be in this stretch of water. We could gethit with a claim for compensation.

Nelson:But you must hate a Frenchman asyou hate the devil.

Hardy: I wouldnt let the ships diversityco-ordinator hear you saying that sir.Youll be up on disciplinary report.

Nelson: You must consider every man anenemy, who speaks ill of your King.

Hardy:Not any more, sir. We must be inclusivein this multicultural age. Now put on your Kevlarvest; its the rules. It could save your life

    Nelson:Dont tell me - health & safety.

Whatever happened to rum, sodomyand the lash ?

Hardy:As I explained, sir, rum is off the menu! And theres a ban on corporal punishment.

    Nelson:What about sodomy?

Hardy:I believe that is now legal, sir.

    Nelson:In that case..........

    ............. kiss me, Hardy.

Dear Editor,On August 4th the country will come togetherto commemorate the day when 100 years ago,Great Britain entered a war with Germany thatwould become known as the Great War.

Cromer Parish Church, the Royal British Legionand Cromer Town Council have been workingtogether to mark the day accordingly.

Starting at 11am on the day, people are invitedto gather at the War Memorial near the Cromer

Parish Church for a service to acknowledge thosewho gave their lives from the town of Cromer.

The service will be led by the Rt Revd JonathanMeyrick, the Bishop of Lynn and the Rev PeterHerbert, Curate at Cromer Parish Church.Local military organisations & other groups willparticipate for the roll-call of those who died inWorld War One. Following two minutes silence,a candle of remembrance will be lit by BishopJonathan in the church and for the following 8hours, a single guard of honour, changing eachhour, will stand over the lit candle.

Later in the day at 7:30pm, a Centenary Concertwill take place in the Parish Church with musicby the Cromer & Sheringham Brass Band andthe internationally renowned Broadland Youth

Choir will be singing a selection of songs.Baroness Shephard of Northwold will read somewell-known poems from the WW1 period.

The concert will end at 10pm and it is hopedthat a young descendant of one of the WorldWar One men named on the War Memorialwill come forward over the next few weeksto extinguish the Memorial Candle.

This is the time that across the nation it is hopedthat candles will be lit in homes to mark the hourwhen in 1914 Sir Edward Grey famously saidThe lamps are going out all over Europe.

Tickets for the concert are are available at 5from Cromer Town Council, North Lodge,Overstrand Rd. Cromer : 01263 512 254.

Email is [email protected] Proceeds from the concert will go towardsthe War Memorial Restoration Fund.

Artists Against FraudBe warned: a number of free advertising publica-tions are targeting artists and craftspeople.

From a cold call, you can fnd you have spent

hundreds of pounds. Highly pressurising sales-persons phone, offering to do a feature on yourwork with promises of huge returns.

When it turns out to have a fnancial implication(unmentioned at rst) they manage to get you tospend far more than you want to or can afford if possible through 4 issues of their magazine:

1.The 1st approach may be - We are producinga special issue on the arts and wed like you tobe the one painter/ potter/weaver/printmakerthat we feature; you are special.

2.Everyone in the ofce is raving about yourwork. Wed really like to put you on the coverof the next issue. You deserve no less

3.Amazing news! Our annual meeting hasawarded you this years prize for (painting/pottery/ weaving etc.) That entitles you to abig prizewinners piece in the next issueyou cant refuse the prize.

4.Now we have to have a follow-up pictureof you holding the prize, dont we? You mustagree, so as not to let the others down

Each stage costs you money. If youre runningout of money, its: I tell you what I can do: Ihave a special budget and can put 300 of myown money towards this, to halve the price.

If you ask for time to think about it, its:Sorry, no time, the deadline for the issue isthis afternoon, we must have a decision now.

Before you can change your mind youve spentFollowing this, other operators may send you

unsolicited leaets into which your detailsand copyrighted imagery have been pirated, accompanied by an invoice, both illegal.

Pressuring phone calls, legal threats and lettersfrom alleged debt collectors may follow.

The chief players we have encountered appearto be separate companies, the sales techniquesof some are identical.

    Dear Editor,

Over the past 3 months I have been repeatedlytargeted by a number of free publicationspressing me to advertise with them withpromises of huge returns.

My artist husband (always sceptical) was evenpersuaded, just to get rid of them and Im noteasily conned but in this case I succumbedagainst my better judgement.

The experience and loss of money have been sodistressing that we decided to email twenty sevenrandomly chosen artists from these publicationsto ask what their experiences were.

All but one (husband very ill, couldnt respond)matched ours; thats just 26 of the hundreds ofartists persuaded to advertise in these papersover time.

Those artists we had contacted agreed we shouldtake the matter further to try to put a stop to thepractice or at least warn other fellow artists.

We contacted the Police, Action Fraud, You &Yours, Jeremy Vine, RA magazine, The Jackdaw,Artist & Illustrator and whatever artist groupsor associations anyone has contact with.

We do hope You and Yours will take this up -a change from the usual problems!

Below is the Press Release that we sent out.

No artist we have contacted has had anyresponse to their advertisements.

Some of the publications are well designed andreproduce the artwork well. But no one, bruisedby their encounter, would want the experienceagain, so in effect they slash and burn clientsas they go. Others are murkily printed on poornewsprint, but you dont know this when youare approached. Local services, tree surgeonsand holiday lets are the proper clients forthese papers, not artists.

Be cautious if approached by these publications:they are perfectly legal but can be very over-persuasive and the ads do not appear to bringany recorded results. Some appear to pick up artists details from thelegal publications and send an unsolicited, faitaccompli alleged Community Magazine, aninvoice and then threats if you refuse to pay;phone calls include playing back an allegedrecording of you agreeing to the terms, butthe recording is so crackly that your denialscannot be categorical even though youknow you never spoke to them before.

The debt collectors demands come from thesame address, Communications House, 290Moston Lane, Manchester M40 9WB

Lifestyles in Birmingham have phoned in such

a way as to make the victim think they are theBB&O Guardian or another publication youhave been in touch with, saying they havelost your credit card details (etc)

These Are Scams. If approached by them oranyone similar, do not respond but reportthe incident to the National Fraud IntelligenceBureau at: www.actionfraud.police.uk

The affable & enthusiastic salespeople at thelegal papers set out to make friends with you.

They trade on your working in isolation with nopoint of comparison, on your being patheticallygrateful for anyone liking your work, on likingit so very, very much, on your small vanitiesand then on your shame at having been fast-talked into advertising with them so you are

too embarrassed to tell anyone. You say its my fault, I should have been moresavvybut that is to condone their right to conyou. It may not be criminal, but it is mercilessand it leaves a trail of misery.

    It is indefensible.

Thanks to Juliet Wood for sending this.

Sean Knight, NNDC Revenues Manager, said:

In the past we have been unable to nd suitablyskilled revenue ofcers and had to take on agencystaff, which is expensive and can only ever beshort-term. I am really pleased that weve beenable to offer jobs to Brianne and Kristian, itsno more than they both deserve.

Cllr. Russell Wright from the Business Enterprise& Economic Development, said: The councilhas promoted the benets of apprenticeships tothe local business community and I am pleasedthat we have been putting our money where our

mouth is and offering apprenticeships ourselves, and even more pleased that this latest pair ofapprentices have been so successful. The apprenticeship scheme is not only excellentfor the young people involved, but also in termsof building their long-term commitment to workinglocally, and in building the skills capabilities ofthe wider north Norfolk community as a whole.

The Dangers ofSun ExposureWe are of course very lucky living on the NorthNorfolk coast to be near the sea. However thisdoes increase our risk of problems due to sunexposure. Overdoing sun exposure can lead toa range of skin problems; the most serious ofwhich is skin cancer. Other skin problemsinclude sunburn, photosensitivity rashes andprickly heat. These conditions can also bemade worse while on certain medication.

Although a lot of people would regard having atan as being healthy, a tan is actually a sign thatthe skin has been harmed by UV radiation andis the bodys response to try and defend itselfagainst further damage.

Melanin is a constituent of the skin. It is a pigmentmolecule which absorbs a proportion of UV radiation. People with a darker complexion havemore naturally occurring sun protection, so fairskinned individuals & particularly people withred hair have very little natural melanin andtherefore are at a higher risk. The very youngare also at very high risk and so extraprotection needs to be given.

More than 100,000 new cases of skin cancer arediagnosed annually in the UK. Extensive sun

exposure is thought to be responsible for the vastmajority of cases. In more than 4 out of 5 cases, skin cancer is a preventable disease.

The main safety tips to prevent sun over-exposure are as follows:

1.Protect the skin with clothing, including ahat, preferably with a wide brim, T- shirt andwraparound sunglasses.

2.Spend time in the shade between 11am & 3pmwhen it is most sunny.

3.Use a high protection sunscreen of at leastSPF 30, which also has high UVA protection.Make sure you apply it generously & frequentlywhen in the sun and reapply it after swimming.

4.Keep babies and young children out of direct

sunlight.5.Keep an eye on moles and if you have anyworrisome changes, bring them to the attentionof your doctor. These changes include:getting bigger

changing shape & particularly getting anirregular edge

changing colour; becoming darker or patchyor multi shaded

loss of symmetry; the 2 halves of your molenot looking the same

    itchy or painful

    bleeding or becoming crusty

    looking inamed

    It can be useful to take a photograph of your moles;

especially in sun exposed areas so that you areable to ascertain or not whether there has beena change or not. Early diagnosis of change is

important so if you have any concerns, pleasemake an appointment to have a check at yoursurgery. Also of concern is the appearance ofa new mole in an adult aged over 40.

Ultraviolet radiation from the sun is transmittedin 3 wavelengths: UVA, UVB & UVC. UVC doesnot penetrate the earths atmosphere but we doneed to protect against UVA. UVA is associated

with skin ageing. It affects the elastin of the skinand leads to wrinkles & sun induced skin ageingas well as skin cancer. UVA can penetrate windowglass and also penetrates the skin more deeplythan UVB. So UVA protection and a sunscreenwill help defend the skin against photo agingand also potentially skin cancer.

UVB is a form of ultraviolet radiation most respo-nsible for sunburn and has very strong links tomalignant melanoma and basal cell carcinomarisk which are two types of skin cancer.A sunscreen with a high SPF (Sun ProtectiveFactor) will help block UVB rays and preventthe skin from burning and displaying damagewhich can then go on to cause skin cancer.

Sunscreens in the UK are labelled with SPF.

This stands for sun protective factor. It primarily shows the level of protection againstUVB. SPFs are rated on a scale of 6 to 50+,based on the level of protection they offer.

A sunscreen of SPF of 30 is recommended as asatisfactory form of sun protection in addition toprotective shade and clothing. Water resistanceis tested by the ability of a sunscreen to retainits sun protective properties following two 20minute intervals of moderate activity in water.

However it must be remembered that up to 85%of the product can be removed by towel drying,so sunscreen should be reapplied after swimming, sweating or any other vigorous activity.

Heat exhaustion can also occur in warm weatherwhich is primarily dehydration. For this reason

it is sensible to take extra water when you aretravelling; especially when you are going to beexposed to the sun. Please also remember whentravelling with dogs that they will nd it verydifcult to lower their body temperature, so donot leave them in cars when you are out & about. If you have to, then make sure you are parkedin the shade & that they have adequate ventilation.

In summary prevention is the most important wayof dealing with sun overexposure and an aware-ness of ways to reduce sun damage will makesure that you have a safe and happy summer.

    Helping People

Stay IndependentCentral Norfolk Clinical Commissioning Groups& Norfolk County Council are running a jointpublic survey via the Your Voicemembershipscheme to nd out how to help older peoplestay independent for longer.

The survey focuses on Falls & Bone Health andaims to learn more about what causes people tofall. It is also designed to get feedback on howand when people access health services afterthey have fallen.

Dr James Gair, Nth Norfolk GP & Falls Lead said:We want to hear from older people and theirfamilies about what we can do to help peoplelive independently for as long as possible.

We want to fnd out more about what is going onin peoples lives around the time they fall andwhere they turn to immediately afterwards. We also need to know what type of on-goingsupport they need until they return to goodhealth and full mobility.

Falls can have a major effect on an older personsquality of life & can mean the difference betweenbeing able to live independently and needingresidential care. However this is not just anolder persons issue. Dr Gair continues:Some of the factors that put people at risk offalling can start many years before, such aspoor bone health from an early menopauseor from treatment for prostate cancer. We also want to see how aware people are

of this and hope to get people as young as40 to take part in the survey.

Your Voiceis a membership scheme run byNCC for anyone interested in sharing their viewsand experiences to help develop and improvea wide range of services in Norfolk.

Members are invited to have their say on anumber of services provided by other public

sector organisations including county, city and district councils and clinicalcommissioning groups.
