Having been to the Circus Ferrelbefore (letter below) I can highlyrecommended getting your ticketnow to this years show, as it isa great experience.

So what will our good friend, NigelHolmes, be like? I do not know.

I would encourage our Crab Talesreaders to go along and report backtheir views on him becoming a full

time Ringmaster, see you there onthe 5th, as we will be there.

In the meantime I do like the specialposter (below)Nigel and wish youall the very best.

I would also like to thank PamelaCyugier from Peterborough, forher letter regarding the now lostrabbit, in Peterborough.

I do hope that this city is a suitablelocation, in which a former Norfolkrabbit can lead a happy and longlife & produce many more happyrabbits. I can already hear manyof our local farmers objectingto these comments.

Now, nearly 100 years since thestart of the Great War I am verygrateful to both Terry Raymondfor his poem and Bob Wilkinsonfor his letter about Bert James, and I hope Bob will get someresponse to his quest.

It is so easy to forget just howyoung these men were then.

The question I am always leftunanswered is why was thisever called the Great War?

With so many good folks beingkilled for our freedom.

There are many commemorationservices and special exhibitionsgoing on in this area so pleasecheck our Special Events pagesfor all the details.

The Carnival Childrens weeks willstart on August 4th and our nextissue out will be covering all of

the Cromer Carnival Events.Whatever you do this summer,do enjoy the Cromer Carnival.

    Enjoy YourCrab Tales

And actually it would be great to see the oldergeneration (of which I am one) coming to theshow. Circus is for adults as much as childrenso come with a friend or on your own. You will

be assured a warm welcome, particularly at thislive and exclusive show. You can set yourTV recorder to pick up the usual telly stuff, so theres no excuse.

Please come to cheer me on and help me keepcontrol of the clowns, tightrope walkers and

jugglers. Its just 6 for a two hour live show, right in the centre of Mundesley.

    RegardsNigel Holmes

Dear Editor,We have a caravan at East Runton and overEaster we noticed a very small rabbit runningunder our van and car. He grew slightly largereach time I saw him.

Then we decided it was time to go home andloaded up the car. We stopped at Kings Lynnfor half an hour, then went on our journey ofapprox 65miles altogether.

Well when we arrived home we started to unloadas you do and as I turned round I noticed a rabbiton the drive, we were tired at the time and never

thought, my husband put the car in the garageand around 5am the alarm went off.

He went out ready to meet trouble and there onthe bonnet sat the said rabbit, he had taken a ride

Dear Editor,I have been asked to arrange an exhibition atAll Saints Church, Beeston Regis to tell the

stories of the men who died in the First WorldWar and who are buried in the churchyard orotherwise commemorated in the church.

There is mystery surrounding the burial in thechurchyard of a young Australian RFC pilotfrom Adelaide (see attached story below)

Despite my researches and those of a friend inAdelaide we have been unable to nd out whyCaptain James was buried in Beeston Regis andI would be grateful if you could nd room topublish the story in the hope that one of yourreaders can help with additional information.

with us all the way and hopped back from thedrive into the garage.

Needless to say my husband took the car to bechecked out in case we had a nest but Peter wasa loner. He hopped off and was never seen again.

I hope the local rabbits accepted him well andhe now has many babies as the saying goes ha.

Captain Bert JamesRoyal Flying CorpsIn the churchyard of All Saints in Beeston Regisis the grave of an Australian pilot who servedin the Royal Flying Corps and the Royal AirForce in the First World War.

Bert James was 20 yrs old when he left Adelaide,Sth Australia on the 23rd March 1916, aboardthe P&O Steam Ship Malwa, to sail to Englandto join the Royal Flying Corps. He qualied asa Flight Lieutenant on June 3rd and was sent toFrance as part of 3rd Squadron where he ewreconnaissance missions.

On July 17th 1917 he had a crash and smashedhis machine but got off with a shaking. On July19th he came down again, landing in a shell hole,

wrecking his plane and receiving injuries to hisknee. He was sent back to England for treatmentand during this period qualied as Captain and

became an instructor and when his commandingofcer was on leave Captain James was put in

charge of 50 ofcers and 300 men.He was reported to have shown great skill in thetime he was in charge. It is possible that he spentthis time with 63rd Training Squadron in Redcar, but this cannot be conrmed from his records. The Royal Flying Corps became the Royal AirForce in April 1918.

Above The headstone in All Saints church.

It seems that in May 1918 he was returning to hissquadron on the Western Front when he had afatal accident over Dartford, Kent.

Despite research in Norfolk & Adelaide we have,as yet, been unable to nd anything in his familyhistory or servicerecord which linksCaptain James to

North Norfolk thatmight account forhis being buried inthe churchyard atBeeston Regis.

On Right:A photo of CaptainJames from his localpaper in Adelaidewhen they reported

    his death.

If anyone can provide any information we wouldbe very grateful so that his full story can betold as part of the WW1 commemorationsplanned by All Saints Church and then

preserved in the church records.Bob Wilkinson, Sheringham

Independent shops and cafes are a major partof what makes Cromer Cromer, part of the

The Cromer Digital High Street was set up inin 2013 in response to the challenge posed toindependent shops by the rise in online retail.

By working together across Cromer, and withretailers across the country, a network of shopshas been created, enabling a low cost & low riskway for independent retailers to sell onlinewith local support and a national presence.

This is developing into the online presence forCromer, showing the range and reach of shopsin Cromer, building on the high street to showCromer as the destination.

An Irishman..........wants a job, but the foreman wont hire himuntil he passes a little maths test.

Here is your rst question, the foreman said.

Without using numbers, represent the number 9.

    Without numbers? The Irishman says

    Dat is easy.

And he proceeds to draw three trees.

    Whats this?the boss asks.

Have you aint got no brain? Tree and treeplus tree makes 9says the Irishman.

Fair enough, says the boss. Heres your second

question. Use the same rules, but this time thenumber is 99.

The Irishman stares into space for a while, then picks up the picture that he has justdrawn and makes a smudge on each tree...

    Ere you go.

The boss scratches his head and says:

How on earth do you get that to represent 99?

Each of da trees is dirty now. So, its dirty tree, and dirty tree, plus dirty tree. Dat makes 99.

The boss is getting worried that hes going toactually have to hire this Irishman, so he says:

All right, last question. Same rules again, but represent the number 100.

The Irishman stares into space some more, thenhe picks up the picture again and makes a littlemark at the base of each tree and says:

    Ere you go. One hundred.

The boss looks at the attempt.

You must be nuts if you think thatrepresents a hundred!

The Irishman leans forward and points to themarks at the base of each tree and whispers:

A little dog come along and poop by each

tree. So now you got dirty tree and a turd, dirty tree and a turd, and dirty tree and aturd, which makes ONE HUNDRED!

The Irishman is now head of Ryan Air.

Thanks to David Thorne for this.

This wonderful county primary school is in verygood health and on my arrival I was introducedto Daniel Stevens, aged 11, going on 12 in August, who showed my around the school during hisnal couple of weeks at the school.

(Far Right)Having been at this school since the age of three, Danielis a ne example of how good the school is.Daniel is going onto become a student of theCromer Academy in September, I do wishhim all the very best.

Alongside numerous others attending this jollycoffee morning, there were a number of formerpupils of this popular local school, all verysupportive of the place and the staff.

You cannot but like and admire the work ofeveryone running the school, particularly thehead teacher, Mrs Angie Hamilton, (Above)who during the morning happened to win awonderful looking cake, talk about beingan in-house set up, I was assured otherwise.

With only 24 pupils in the main school and 17 in thepre-school it is small indeed and as someone said:

It is likea Big family for their happy pupils.PK

Vale Road,MundesleyOn Friday July 18th, I met upwith two gentlemen from theNNDC and David Pardon ofMundesley Electrical, half-way up Vale Road, on the

Mundesley slope, to discussthe future management ofthe site.

It is now open for the public toaccess, both holiday makers&the boat owners, wishing tolaunch their boats from there.

In summary, I would suggestthat there is noproblem there, so long asthe visitors would PLEASE refrain from

leaving their rubbish there, which seems to bethe main problem at the moment.

It is certainly a lovely part of Norfolk and iswell worth preserving, without the rubbishbeing left lying around there.

The long and short answer it to preserve theplace as it is, without any rubbish being left

there, either now or in the future.I would say that this should apply to anywherewe visit, as residents or as holidaymakers.

I would also like to add that parking on the beachis not a good idea, I draw readers attention tothe photo on left of someone who did, whichwas in Issue 38 of the Crab Tales, page 8. PK

Please keep up your good work

One Summers DayThey went to war one summers day

You will be home for Christmas they heardthem say

They were eager to go, they went so fast

Little did they know how long it would last

They fought so bravely in every battle

But a lot of the time they were treatedlike cattle

When they were rested they would sendhome a letter

And replies from their loved ones would help

    them feel better

Then sometimes they were face to facewith the foe

When crossing the lines to play footballthey would go

But they knew when the game came to an end

The next day they might kill their newfound friend

To the enemy the Generals would not yield

They sent thousands to die in muddyFlanders eld

They advanced on the enemy in the rainand the cold

But death did not choose between youngand old

Onward they went into the ferocious gun re

Forming human bridges over tangledbarbed wire

Past dead comrades who had died before

Knowing they were released from the horrorof war.

For those who survived the war it was hard

For many the rest of their life was scarred

Now, I knew a man who with sometimes

I would walkBut of the times of that war he never would talk

I ask you please on that day in November

Please stop for a moment and just remember

Of those men who died for their Kingand the Kingdom

So that what they gave has given us freedom.

They fought with such courage when theygave their lives

Leaving to mourn them, Mothers, Girl friendsand Wives

So when you stand silent on that eleventh hour

Please wear with pride your red Poppy ower

Mundesley Ladies Keep Fit, is now closed butthankfully it will re-open by September, thistime under the direction of Annamarie, whoalready runs a similar class in Cromer.

The MLKFwas set up by the then DistrictNurse Hines in 1960, before it was takenover by Hazel Collingham in 1965 until2009, i.e. Over 44 years ago.

When Hazel retired, in December 2009, PamelaMalone offered to take over for a couple years!

Well now with a number of ladies keeping t

and losing weight classes in the village, Pamis retiring from running these classes.

I know Pam from the Mundesley Film Club andas an admirer of how very much she does.

On July 17th, I went along the street to her lastclass full of some 18 ladies doing their bit.I really must say that not many of them lookedas though they needed to attend to loss weight, far from it.

At just past eight in the evening, the class kicked offwith the ladies all taking notice of Pamela directionswhile doing their exercises to the background musicand every one of them seemed to know what theywere doing and also enjoying the routine which ranfor about 45 minutes before the tables were set upfor wine & snacks while enjoying a chat about thelast, near on, 50 years and of course to thank Pamfor the time and energy she has put into runningthe Ladies Keep Fit over so many years.

I really enjoyed witnessing the dedication Pamhas given this this group of charming ladies. PK

Dear Philip,I would like to say a very big Thank You forhighlighting my book Five Moves For Lucy.

I have a slight problem as we mentioned inthe article that the paperback book wasavailable on Amazon.

Unfortunately for me and hundreds more newauthors works are not available in paperbackat present as they are, I understand, all beingvetted by the EU???

I dont have all the information as they will nottell me, but they only say that some new law isholding things up and everybody new, now hasto be validated?

Amazon also do not like it because they say theyare losing a lot of money because of this.

However strange it may seem the very samebook is available on Amazon Kindle and hasbeen for the past 3 months and I have no ideawhen it will be available as a paperback fromAmazon -You Couldnt Make It Up!!

If your readers want the paperback version it isavailable from Jarrolds, Cromer & Norwich.

Thank you once again for all of your valuedhelp for which I am extremely grateful.

    Gifts AgainWritten by Miranda Marshall

    Partner at Hayes + Storr

This is the third article in a series aboutmaking gifts.

After all the dire warnings in my last twoarticles, I would like to focus on some ofthe positive aspects of making gifts.

There are 2 popular sayings which quickly spring

to mind on the subject of lifetime giving:There are no pockets in shrouds.andIt is better to give with warm hands.

No one has yet found a way to take their worldlygoods with them when they die; although theEgyptian Pharaohs tried their best.

The pleasure of giving is often considered to begreater than that of receiving. Beneting from agift sooner rather than later can alleviate nancialneed at the time when it is truly required. It canalso allow a younger person to get their foot onthe rst rung of the housing ladder before itgets pulled up and forever out of reach.

There are other slightly more technical reasonsthan just the rosy glow of benevolence.

From an Inheritance Tax planning point ofview, provided of course that the giver is leftwith enough to continue their standard ofliving and to provide for a rainy day, itis the usual mantra of Give as much asyou can, as soon as you can and liveas long as you can.that applies.

Generally, gifts made more than 7 years beforedeath pass to the recipient Inheritance Tax free.

In handing over assets during ones life there canalso be savings in the cost of administering theestate following a death and it can reduce theunavoidable delays of Probate in processingan estate on death.

In some carefully assessed and plannedcircumstances, the need to sell assets to

pay for care fees can be avoided. The assets given may, in much the same way,not be taken into account if the person has toundergo means-testing for benetsor publicly-funded services.

Should the person making the gift lose mentalcapacity & no Power of Attorney (Enduring orLasting) be in place, it can avoid the expense

&delay in applying to the Court of Protectionfor a Court Order to manage, sell or otherwisedeal with the asset.

Attorneys are often surprised to discover that itis usually not straight-forward and often not even

possible for them to make gifts on behalf of theperson who appointed them.

Gifts of a seasonal natureare permitted with-out Court authority but otherwise the Courtsapproval to such gifts must be obtained inorder for those gifts to be valid.

It is difcult, expensive and slow to obtain theCourts approval to make larger gifts on behalfof an attorney.

This article aims to supply general information, but it is not intended to constitute advice.

Every effort is made to ensure that the law referredto is correct at the date of publication and toavoid any statement which may mislead.

CoastwatchsCharmingChanteuseEarlier this year the charming Cerian Ellsonwooed Cinderella & wowed audiences withher performance as Prince Charming inMundesley Players annual Pantomime.

Now be prepared to be charmed again!

Cerian will be singing at theMundesleyCoastwatch Family Fun-DayonSaturday August 23rd.

Her programme will reect her eclectic taste- from Jazz to Rap - and the versatility of herunique voice - very modern with ablues inuence.

Cerian is certainly making her mark on the music

scene. She has performed at Norwich Playhouse, the Atrium & school assemblies, and will appearat the North Walsham Beer Festival shortly.

Her enjoyment of music goes back to early child-hood and her strong voice and condence wereobvious even at pre-school, where her talentswere rst recognised and she was cast as theBossy Kingin a production.

Now moving on to Paston College to study Drama,Theatre & Performance Studies plus psychology& sociology, Cerians career choice is to becomea singer, but she is also interested in Criminalpsychology. Perhaps there is a way ofcombining the two?

So, dont just take our word for it - come alongto the Mundesley Coastwatch Family Fun -Day

on Bank Holiday Saturday 23rd August andhear Cerian for yourself.

You wont be disappointed but you WILL becharmed. (Cerians spot will start around12 .30) Remember, you heard her here, rst..
