Over the last few months Ive beenconsidering whether or not to packup running a local free publicationand after spending a great deal oftime thinking about it, I have nowdecided to hand most of the dayto day operation over to a goodand well respected friend.

Liz King from Trimingham will bedealing with all new advertising andproducing the rst Crab Tales

in the new year, with my wife, Lis,continuing to deal with letters andspecial events etc. and put it alltogether ready to send to theprinters every fortnight.

Like any fortnightly publication itdoes take quite a lot of hard workto get out, ready to be enjoyed byits loyal readers, of which thereare a great many around.

I will continue to do some editorialand organise the distribution so youwill see me around Cromer everyfortnight as usual.

In our next issue, the last beforeChristmas, I will let you knowmore about Liz King. After over ten years now, I have, until recently, enjoyed producingthis paper and hope that I havegot it right for most of ourloyal and regular readers.

    If I have not. Sorry.

Like all free publications, we canonly exist by selling space to ouradvertisers, who, hopefully, willcontinue to benet from placingtheir adverts with us.

From now on for advertising pleaseperson contact: Liz Kingby phoneon 01263 834 965or by email on:[email protected]

What will I be doing meanwhile?Sailing a bit more and possiblyseeking a part time job thatdoes not tax me too much.

Always nice to get a response fromNigel Holmes letter in our lastissue, particularly from JanetMonro who writes so well.

    Dear Philip,Cabbell Park and Planners

I am concerned about the planners and localDistrict Councillors and their role in theCabbell Park saga.

The Cabbell Park takeover did not happenwithout a degree of work behind the scenesyears before the local plan emerged andthe NNDC started its formal takeover.

Thislocal plan would have started life in thePlanning ofce. It would have involved ofcerscreating a rst draft which would createconsiderable work.

Councillors would have then been consultedor even have had some input to the rst andsubsequent drafts. After adjustments the planwould have been presented to the Councilfor approval/amendment.

The plan would then be open for public inspectionand also would have been presented to the TownCouncil for comment. The plan would then havebeen sent to the Government for approval. Thisprocess would have taken years during which timeneither the trustees nor the football club wereadvised that this proposal was being considered.

The Trustees did not take the opportunity to

view the plan when available. They just did not think that the council wouldconsider changing the status of Cabbell Parkand if so they would be consulted.

Who would have seen the plans in time to makean objection? Those who you would imaginemight have considered it to be in the interest ofthe town were the local District Councillors.

They kept quiet even though two had closecontact with the football club.

One piece of interesting comment in the plan wasthat the clubs lease ran out in 2012. Very fewpeople knew this even though it was no secret.

It was not the sort of information that wasreadily obtained. Where did they get thatinformation from?

    Yours faithfully,

    R.F.Richards

    Cromer

Dear Philip,I had my usual weekly trip into Cromer today..........the NNDC is doing its bit for Tourism, without warning its upped the car parkingcharges by 50%.

It has not been in press, public noticesor on facebook.

One comment I heard said that it had been agood season so time to put the prices up?

I see that the County Council have started to

charge for street parking and by the springyou will have to pay to park anywhere..

Dear Philip,North Norfolk is a beautiful place and manypeople enjoy walking all year round, week in,week out.

How annoying it is therefore that some of ourpublic toilets are only open at weekends fromNovember through to March as we found outwhen walking through Overstrand recently.

I am sure that this policy must discourage peoplefrom visiting some of our lovely coastal villagesduring the winter, which must be having aknock on effect on local businesses.

Surely North Norfolk District Council couldconsider leaving one accessible toilet at eachcar park unlocked during the week in these

Dear Philip,Lyn, Pam L Andrea and Pam C would like tosay aBig Thank Youto all the members andthe families of About With Friends who havemade our jobs worthwhile.

To the members of our lunch clubs who

have supported us over the last 4 yearsinEverythingwe have done

To the local businesses we have had thepleasure of working with and serving.

To our wonderful volunteers who have givenso generously of their time.

The pleasure has all been ours, but the time hascome for us to move on from AWF and withsome sadness we say goodbye for now andwish you all the very best in the future.

Dear Philip,I havejust arrived back in Stamford with thelatest issue of the Crab Tales, having closedup the caravan until March.

I would just like to say thank you for a goodread whilst in Mundesley full of informationlooking forward to seeing it again in March

    Best wishes

Dear Sir,I have never worn a poppy, but every year onNov. 11th I pause to remember my grandfatherwho died in a German POW camp. He fell outof his machine-gun tower.

Talking of machine-gun towers, I see that theCouncil has removed the towns CCTV cameras.

All but the camera outside their North Lodgehideout. I suppose it keeps a secure eye ontheir motor cars.

I wish I could get elected to the Council. I wouldmake life very comfortable for myself.

    Yours sincerelyPhilip Graham

Dear Philip,I am so pleased that the Holt Day Centre project, set up under the previous Lib Dem administration,is still a success. I know that it provided, and

continues to provide, a useful opportunity forso many people to do this outdoor work andto gain from it.During the previous Lib Dem administration theHolt Country Park gained the coveted green Flag.

I am sure that the local members Cllr MikeBaker and Cllr Phillip High continue to beproud of the fantastic facility in their ward?

It would be good to see this initiative developedin other areas. The volunteers at SheringhamLittle Theatre is another example of a greatsuccess of using volunteers.

    Graham Jones, Independent District Councillor

Over 50 Years AgoMany of our Crab Line readers will rememberthe day that Jack Kennedy was killed but howmuch do any of us know about his life?

After watching a programme on televisionabout him I decided to nd out more.

John Fitzgerald Kennedy (born May 29th 1917died November 22nd 1963) commonly knownas Jack Kennedy or by his initials JFK, was anAmerican politician who served as the 35thPresident of the United States from January1961 until his assassination in 1963.

Notable events during his presidency includedthe Bay of Pigs Invasion, the Cuban MissileCrisis, the Space Race - by initiating Project

Apollo (which later culminated in the moonlandings)the building of the Berlin Wall, theAfrican-American Civil Rights Movement, and the increased US involvementin the Vietnam War.

After military service as commander of MotorTorpedo Boats PT-109 & PT-59 during WorldWar II in the South Pacic, Kennedy representedMassachusettss 11th congressional districtin the U.S. House of Representatives from1947 to 1953 as a Democrat.

Thereafter, he served in the U.S. Senate fromthat state from 1953 until 1960.

Kennedy defeated Vice President & Republicancandidate, Richard Nixon, in the 1960U.S. Presidential Election.

At age 43, he was the youngest man to have beenelected to the ofce, the 2nd-youngest president(afterTheodore Roosevelt), and the rst personborn in the 20th century to serve as president.

To date, Kennedy has been the only RomanCatholic president and the only president tohave won a Pulitzer Prize.

Kennedy was assassinated in Dallas, Texas onNovember 22nd 1963. Lee Harvey Oswaldwas arrested that afternoon and chargedwith the crime that night.

Jack Ruby shot and killed Oswald two dayslater, before a trial could take place.

The FBI and the Warren Commission ofciallyconcluded that Oswald was the lone assassin.

The United States House Select Committee onAssassinations agreed with the conclusion thatOswald red the shots which killed the president, but also concluded that Kennedy was probablyassassinated as the result of a conspiracy.

Since the 1960s, information concerningKennedys private life has come to light.

Details of Kennedys health problems withwhich he struggled have become betterknown, especially since the 1990s.

Although initially kept secret from the generalpublic, reports of Kennedy being unfaithful inmarriage have garnered much press.

Kennedy ranks highly in public opinion ratingsof U.S. presidents but there is a gap betweenhis public reputation and his reputationamong academics.

Like so many aged in their early 60s I can wellrecall what I was doing on that particular dayback in November 22nd, as it was my youngerbrothers birthday and he has just celebratedhis 60th Birthday.

No doubt there were many problems causedby Kennedy and his administion, includingin particular in Cuba.

But was he a good President of the USA?

I have the general feeling that he was a goodman for the job. What do you think? PK

North NorfolkFeline TrustOn Friday 21st November Jan Balfour, Readerof Trimingham church visited North NorfolkFeline Trust where she met Mrs Rees andJenny, one of the trustees, plus some ofthe fabulous cats.

She was there to give to Mrs Rees the moniescollected at Trimingham church Pet serviceearlier in the month. This busy charity isalways very grateful for donations greator small as all aids the welfare of NorthNorfolks felines.

Above: Mrs. Rees with the letter and thecheque for 5000.

    Mrs Rees writes:

What a wonderful surprise on the mulled winemorning on 22nd November when this chequefor 5000 arrived from The Douglas & JoanneChapman Animal Trust of Attleborough.

Without prior warning except for a telephone

call, two of their trustees arrived and werevery impressed with the cleanliness andhow calm and content the cats were.

They also saw the damage caused by the stormwhen the tree branch penetrated the cattery

Small Business BillPub campaigners have welcomed a new cross-party clause to the Small Business Bill whichoffers new protections for local publicansagainst the predatory practices of large pubowning companies (known as pubcos).

Following a report by the Select Committee, theLabour Party has campaigned alongside groupsin theindustry to call for greater protection forlocal pubs and put a stop to unfair treatmentand restrictive practices by pubcos.

The government promised to regulate pubcosin the Small Business Bill, debated recentlyin Parliament, but these fell some way shortof Labours plans & campaigners demands.

Labour therefore supported a cross-partyclause to strengthen the Bill which waspassed in November.

However the Nth Norfolk Labour Party hasexpressed disappointment that MP NormanLamb voted against it - despite a number ofpubs in the constituency having sufferedunder the action of some pubcos.

Denise Burke, Labours Parliamentary Candidatefor Nth Norfolk, said: I am delighted that the

House of Commons has supported this motionwhich will give a boost to local pubs if it isimplemented. Ministers must act quickly toensure there is a proper statutory code witha free-of-tie option to the protect local pubs.

Ifelected in May I will continue to ght forlocal pubs in North Norfolk which are suchan important asset in the community.

ChristmasBazaarLis & I went along to the Christmas Bazaarheld in The Pilgrim Shelter in Triminghamon Saturday 22nd November. When I took my camera out of my pocketI realised that the battery was at so hadto ask Liz King, the future editor of theCrab Tales, to send me some pics.

The Pilgrim Shelter was packed with peoplelooking for Christmas gifts among the manydifferent stalls, and enjoying the deliciousfestive refreshments.

The choice of Tombola prizes was brilliant,we both won extremely edible prizes andwent home with them after stocking upwith more of Andreas homemade Jam.

Liz King told me when she sent the photos:Over 185 was raised towards the PilgrimShelters maintenance. Thank you to allcustomers and stall holders who madethis Bazaar such a great success.

Doctors Advice?Q:Doctor, Ive heard that cardiovascularexercise can prolong life. Is this true?

A:The heart is only good for so many beats, and thats it...Dont waste it on exercise.Everything wears out eventually. Speeding upthe heart will not make you live longer; it islike saying you extend life of car by drivingfaster. Want to live longer? Take a nap.

Q:Should I reduce my alcohol intake?

A: Oh no. Wine is made from fruit. Fruit is very

good. Brandy is distilled wine, that means theytake water out of the fruity bit so you get evenmore goodness that way. Beer is also made ofgrain. Grain is good too. Bottoms up!

    Q:How can I calculate my body/fat ratio?

A:Well, if you have a body and you have fat, your ratio is one to one. If you have 2 bodies, your ratio two to one.

Q:What are the advantages of participating ina regular exercise program?

A:Cant think of one, sorry. My philosophy is:No pain...good!

Q:Arent fried foods bad for you?

A:You Not Listening! Food fried in vegetable

oil. How can getting more vegetables be bad?Q:Will sit-ups help prevent me from getting alittle soft around the middle?

A:Oh no! When you exercise muscle, it getsbigger. You should only be doing sit-ups ifyou want bigger stomach.

    Q:Is chocolate bad for me?

A:Are You crazy? Cocoa bean! Anothervegetable! It best feel-good food around!

Q:Is swimming good for your gure?

A:If swimming is good for your gure, explain whales to me.

Q:Is getting into shape important formy lifestyle?

A: Hey! Round is shape!Well... I hope this has cleared up anymisconceptions you may have hadabout food and diets.

And remember: Life should NOT be a journeyto the grave with the intention of arriving safelyin an attractive and well-preserved body, butrather to skid in sideways - Chardonnay in onehand - chocolatein the other - body thoroughlyused up, totally worn out & screaming:

    WOO-HOO, what a ride!!

    AND.....

For those of you who watch what you eat, heres the nal word on nutrition & health.

Its a relief to know the truth after all thoseconicting nutritional studies.

1.The Japanese eat very little fat and sufferfewer heart attacks than Brits.

2.The Mexicans eat a lot of fat and sufferfewer heart attacks than Brits.

3.The Chinese drink very little red wine andsuffer fewer heart attacks than Brits.

4.The Italians drink a lot of red wine andsuffer fewer heart attacks than Brits.

5.The Germans drink a lot of beer and eatlots of sausages and fats and suffer fewerheart attacks than Brits.

    CONCLUSION:

Eat and drink what you like.

Speaking English is apparentlywhat kills you.

Thanks to Russell Sparkes for this.

Friends AndFamily TestFrom the 1st December all GP practices willbe providing you with the opportunity tocomplete the NHS Friends & Family Test(FFT) questionnaire whenever you useGP services.

The Prime Minister announced the introductionof the FFT in May 2012, with two broad aims of:encouraging improvements in service delivery by driving hospitals to raise their game.

Since this time the FFT has been slowlyintroduced to all areas of the NHS who

provide acute, community, ambulance,GP or mental health services in England.

The aim of the FFT is to gather patient feed-back to improve local services and share good practice from other areas that are already

using the FFT to improve services.

Your Patient Reference Group at MundesleyMedical Centre have helped to shape thedevelopment of the FFT tool as they metwith the local project lead for the intro-duction of the FFT earlier this year.

They asked her to feed back to NHS Englandthat patients did not want to be asked to complete

the FFT on every trip to the GP which wasthe original plan for implementation.

The test simply involves two questions.

The rst question is the same for allGP Practices and is:

We would like you to think about your recentexperiences of our service. How likely are youto recommend our GP practice to friends andfamily if they needed similar care or treatment?

The responses are: Extremely likely; Likely;Neither likely nor unlikely; Unlikely;Extremely unlikely; or Dont know

The second question has to be a free textfollow-up question.

For example Please tell us the main reasonfor selecting your statement.

Practices can have additional questions as wellif they choose. There is no target for how manyresponses we have to collect but each GP Practiceis required to report to NHS England theanswers to question one on a regular basis.

The answers to question 2 or any additionalquestions are not shared with NHS England.

The results of the FFT can be found on theNHS England websitewww.england.nhs.uk.

From 1st December, at Mundesley MedicalCentre questionnaire cards will be available.

However we will continue to welcome all patient

feedback positive and negative in many formatsand would encourage anyone with feedback ora suggestion to use the suggestion box, write ore-mail the practice, join the Patient ReferenceGroup or arrange to speak to a member of staff.

If you would like to know more about the Friendsand Family Test, details can be found on theNHS Choices website: www.nhs.uk.

The Giving TreeAppealVisitors to a Norwich bookstore are beinginvited to get in the festive spirit by givingthe gift of a book to a child in care.

Norfolk County Council and Waterstones haveteamed up for the 9th successive year to launchthe Giving Tree appeal, a Christmas projectaimed at bringing joy to the countys lookedafter children.

The tree is decorated with dozens of tags whicheach represent a child and the book they wouldlike to receive for Christmas.

Some request specifc books, while others

suggest a genre or author that the child likes.Customers can then buy the books, which arecollected by the County Council to be wrappedfor children in time for Christmas.

The children receive the books on ChristmasDay, as a reminder that people in the countyare thinking of them.

Over the years more than 1000 books have beendonated to children NNC care. Many of whomhave had a very difcult start to their lives anddont always have happy memories of Christmas,so this appeal will make a real difference.

The Giving Tree is the initiative of the countysVirtual School for Children in care, which over-sees the education of all looked after children in

Norfolk. The Giving Tree aims to supportreading and learning by giving childrenimproved access to books.

The tree is in the Castle St. store now and booksneed to be bought by December 9th, in order toreach children in time for Christmas as they aredistributed via the childrens schools. Any booksbought later will be delivered in the New Year.

    Council To Find

    Solutions..........for North Norfolk coast

Following the impact of the North Sea tidalsurge last December, NNDC is holding talkswith Bacton Terminal Complex operators toconsider what actions are needed to securethe nationally important asset.

25% of Britains national gas supply enters thecountry through the gas pipelines at Bacton andthe operators of the Bacton Terminal Complexhave jointly worked with NNDC over manyyears regarding the management of erosionrisk to the terminal.

The 2013 surge caused new cliff losses and the

BTC operators need to ensure that any furthererosion is managed to prevent this nationallyimportant infrastructure being put at risk.

Concerns were raised earlier this year withNorman Lamb MP & NNDC. The terminaloperators had identied the requirement topursue an integrated approach which couldinvolve shared public & private funding tomanage coastal erosion in the local vicinity.

Norman Lamb has since co-ordinated a meetingbetween Energy Secretary, Ed Davey MP, CoastalMinister, Dan Rogerson MP and senior guresfrom the Environment Agency, NNDC and theBTC operators. It was agreed that the preferredapproach to protect the terminal at Bacton wouldbe to link it to wider works to ensure that other

communities are not put at risk. These plans are complex and require numerousstakeholder approvals and involvement.

NNDC & BTC operators are now carrying outan investigation in to the key considerationsand options which will then help to form aproposed approach.

The investigation will need to consider coastalprotection options alongside alternatives suchas enabling infrastructure and communities toadapt to a changing coastline.

The proposed technical solution will be discussedwith the relevant local communities and the keyorganisations will report to Ministers early nextyear to ensure that progress is made.

Norman Lamb commented: I was determinedto make sure that this meeting took place so thatministers could understand the need for organis-ations to work together to protect the coastalcommunities alongside the Bacton Terminal.

Dan Rogerson, the Lib Dem EnvironmentMinister, very recently visited Walcott andreally understands the challenges we face.

I am pleased that we were able to agree a way

forward, and will continue to monitor progressclosely over the coming months to make surethat we keep up the momentum.

    A Cyclist Rides

    300km...

......... just to create a picture of a bicycle on

    Google Maps.

Whereas most people use route mapping apps

to get an idea of how far they travel whenthey exercise, a few inventive charactersinstead employ their artistic are andcreate masterpieces for the satellitesto document.

David Taylor from Salisbury set the bara little higher however when he createda huge bicycle using Strava while outon one of his mammoth rides.

The bike, which David had to cycle 301 kmto mark out and stretches all the way fromSouthampton to Poole on the south coast, may well be one of the the biggest piecesof satellite art ever created.

The modest cyclist told Cycling Weekly:

I actually missed some turns so I had toredesign as I went. Still, you can seewhat its meant to be.

A Man In Scotland.........calls his son in London the day before

    Christmas Eve and says:

I hate to ruin your day, but I have to tellyou that your mother and I are divorcing;forty-ve years of misery is enough.

Dad, what are you talking about?the son screams.

We cant stand the sight of each otherany longer, the father says.

Were sick of each other, and Im sick oftalking about this, so you call your sisterin Leeds and tell her.

Frantic, the son calls his sister, who explodes on the phone.

Like hell theyre getting divorced, she shouts.

    Ill take care of this

She calls Scotland immediately, and screams at her father,

    You are NOT getting divorced.

Dont do a single thing until I getthere. Im calling my brother back, and well both be there tomorrow.Until then, dont do a thing,DO YOU HEAR ME?and hangs up.

The old man hangs up his phoneand turns to his wife.

Okay love,he says, theyre comingfor Christmas - and theyre payingtheir own way.
