 Philip Keddell

Dear Philip,I am writing in the hope that you can help me,you are my last hope.

I work in Cromer and sometime on either the16th or 17th of November I lost a very precious item in Cromer.

It was a Liverpool hat with 9 badges whichwere Fathers Day presents from my children,so they mean a lot to me.

I am hoping that you can put something in the

Crab Tales to see if anyone found it.I can be contacted on North Walsham

01692 405 781.

Yours sincerely,

Clive Jackson,

41 Station Road,North Walsham.Norfolk. NR28 0EA

Dear Philip,To all those who thought I was rude to JanetMunro in a recent letter in the Crab Tales.

How could I ever be rude to the winner of“Mundesley’s Miss Lovely Legs 1923”?

 Nigel Holmes

Mundesley

Dear Editor,I was lucky enough to be invited by some oldfriends to go with them to the Christmas PierShow last week.

We all enjoyed the show and especially thedancers with their many varied routines.

Goodness knows how they manage to changeinto so many different costumes withoutgetting too ustered.

However, although the costumes were verycolourful and well designed, we were rathershocked at how extremely skimpy they werenot really appropriate for a family show.

I have never seen so many bottoms in my lifeand thank goodness we were not sitting in thefront row!

None of us are Spring Chickens but we aredenitely not prudes.

Even the tutus worn in the Swan Lake balletnumber were very revealing and seemed to be designed to be so.

I know that the current trend is for ever morerevealing costumes in TV programmes suchas Strictly but is it really necessary?

Yours Sincerely

Ann Wilson, North Walsham

Dear Editor,

North Norfolk Beachrunner John Battrick, 24,has been invited to take on the challenge ofrunning in the London Marathon in April 2015,to raise money for the charity Breaks for Kids.

The charity, managed by The Youth HostelsAssociation, gives fnancial support todisadvantaged children, to enable themto take part in school trips and outdooradventure breaks.

John, from Gresham and currently working for the YHA, said:“This charity means a lot to me. I provide the catering for large groups of disad-vantaged kids at Patterdale YHA and experience rst hand the impact and difference thesebreaks make to young lives. Any supportto help me reach my £1000 target willbe greatly appreciated.”

John is no stranger to fundraising and challenges. At the age of 17, John and his father Peterclimbed Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania,

Dear Philip,I recently took a photograph of our beautifulMundesley beach from the cliff top behindTrafalgar Court.

I then turned to my right and took a photographof the blocked off footpath which leads downto the beach - blocked off because the bottom

part of the path was very, very badly damaged following the storm surge of December 2013.

This particular footpath is important to ourvillage, it was used by locals and visitorsalike all year round.

Our village relies on tourism for survival - andour beach is one of the main reasons why people visit and take holidays here.

‘Tis true there are other paths to the beach but they are well away from the westernend of the village.

It would be rather nice to know exactlywhat is happening to this footpath.

I was told that roughly £5,000 had been spenton a survey - is this true? - I also heard that torepair the footpath would cost in the region of£300,000 plus - it this true?

And is there anyone at North Norfolk DistrictCouncil who really cares whether the path isrepaired or not?

I have also read that on occasion the NNDCMeetings have been cancelled because therewasn’t anything to discuss - so they obviously don’t consider our footpath to be of anyimportance.

I think one year is quite long enough to wait foran answer, whatever that answer might be.

Regards,

Janet Munro

Denise Tarry the Mundesley Branch Secretaryof the WRBL said:

“Our Fayre is a sure sign that Christmas isimminent  and people came from towns andvillages from miles around to buy from the fantastic array of goods on display in theChurch Rooms & the Coronation Hall(it was such a success in 2013 that wehad to have both venues this year).

On sale were festive decorations lovingly madeby Branch Chairman & Treasurer, Jenny Lambert (pictured far left) and Loraine Holtam.

T he magnicent cakes made by members, anda huge range of gifts, household items and allkinds of kitchenalia.

You could also try your luck on the tombola , thebottle tombola or the rafe and once you had spent your money, you could choose from a ploughman’s lunch, soup or a bacon roll followed by a mince pie or delicious cake.

Branch members put in a huge amount  of workto make this year’s Fayre a success and it was!

Thanks to all of them.

A fabulous total of £ 2668.42 was raised andthis will be forwarded to the Royal British Legion Women’s Section Benevolent Fund.

The Fund helps the many men and womenassociated with the armed forces bothnow and in the past.

The Mundesley & District Branch would alsolike to thank everyone that supported the Fayre. We couldn’t do it without you”

As always this Christmas Fayre was verywell attended from the minute they openeduntil the doors were closed at 1.30pm.

There were so many bargains to be foundand lots of happy tombola winners.  PK

The PastonTreasure

Norfolk Museums Service launched its rst crowd-funding campaign on Monday 8th December, tore-gild the frame of the popular 17th century painting The Paston Treasure.

Hosted by the Art Fund’s Art Happens website – a new crowdfunding platform dedicated tosupporting UK museums to raise money fornew, small scale achievable and creative projects – the campaign aims to raise£14,500 in little over three months.

All donations will go towards transformingone of the Norwich Castle Museum and ArtGallery’s rarest and most famous paintings.

Painted by an unknown Dutch artist at OxneadHall, the painting portrays some of the treasurescollected by the famous Paston family, theobjects are dispersed around the world but

the painting has remained in Norfolk. In the 17th century, the ornately carved framewould not have looked as it does today – plainwood - but would have been gilded.

The campaign to re-gild the frame and restorethis masterpiece to its former glory follows an

earlier fundraising drive that coveredthe cost of conserving andcleaning the painting. The Norwich Castle Museum & ArtGallery in partnership with the YaleCenter for British Art in the UnitedStates are planning to stage a majorexhibition in 2018.

The exhibition will bring togetheras many of the Paston treasures as possible, and reunite them withThe Paston Treasure paintingfor the rst time in more than350 years.

Paul Smyth, Chairman of theCommunities Committee at Norfolk County Council,

said: “Crowdfunding provides a novel andvoluntary way for people to directly supportcauses or projects they want to help. As the Paston Treasure painting is a much-loved masterpiece and an intrinsic part of Norfolk’sheritage, we hope this project will attract lotsof support ahead of the major exhibition.”

John Ward, Chairman of Norfolk Joint MuseumsCommittee, said: “The public, in supporting our crowdfunding campaign, will be able to feel a sense of ownership of this magnicent mid 1670smasterpiece depicting world wide objects and showing the wealth & learning of Sir Robert Paston; and visit the Castle Museum to seethe result of their donations in the restored, gilded frame.”

Donors to this project will receive a thankyou for their support - ranging from aspecial project - related postcard to a limitededition tote bag and, for donations of £950and upwards, the opportunity to spend a day behind-the-scenes of the Norwich CastleMuseum & Art Gallery.

The campaign runs until 31st March 2015, bywhich date the full amount has to be raised orthe money pledged will be returned to donors.

Looking forward to seeing you in 2015

At 3.30pm on Saturday November 29th I wentalong to this Circus at the Sheringham HighSchool were it was being staged.

This particular show was put on to support thegreat work being undertaken by SSAFA.

So who are these good folk?

Circus Ramona Answer: It is the vision and drive of one man,who stands at the heart of this charity.

In 1885, after Mayor James Gilda wrote toThe Times appealing for funds the Soldiers

& Sailors’ Families Association was born.Since then they have supported millions of people, by their work, including runningthese sorts of activities.

This was organised by Donna Young who’shusband Brian suffered from Post TraumaticStress Disorder, after a tour of duty in Iraq.

After a 10 min video outlining the work of‘ssafa’   David Harper entertained theaudience on his bag pipes.

The show was thoroughly enjoyable withDonna compering and introducing each performer on to the stage.

Despite having to leave before the end of theshow, I found it a delightful afternoon.

I especially liked ‘ Luna’ the dancing horse,( Below Left ) despite him losing his headduring his routine.

The Belfry Grand Christmas FayreOn Friday December the 5th, I popped into theOverstrand Belfry Primary School to attendtheir Fayre in this great local school.

This particular local primary school has always been seen as one of best local schools in thearea, if not The Best.

Talking to the Head Teacher Titus Cotton youcan understand why, as he is well organisedand very much on the ball.

Titus pointed out a new cup which is beingawarded to Pupils who establish themselvesthrough the work they achieve.

The freshly made food from the kitchen ( Below)was doing a roaring trade.

(Right) who sang so beautifully, with a clearand strong voice. Maria is a pupil of CromerAcademy and plans to use her very naturaltalents after leaving school. A name tofollow and watch out for.

All in all it was a great evening and greatlyenjoyed by everyone who turned out.  PK

An Elderly Man..

........lay dying in his bed.

While suffering the agonies of impending death,he suddenly smelled the aroma of his favouritescones wafting up the stairs. He gathered hisremaining strength, and lifted himself from the

bed, leaning on the wall, he slowly made his way

out of the bedroom, and with even greater effort, gripping the railing with both hands, he crawleddownstairs and with laboured breath, he leanedagainst the door-frame, gazing into the kitchen.

Were it not for death’s agony, he would havethought himself already in heaven, for there, spread out upon the kitchen table werehundreds of his favourite scones.

Was it heaven?

Or was it one nal act of love from his devotedYorkshire wife of sixty years, seeing to it thathe left this world a happy man?

Mustering one great nal effort, he threw himself towards the table and landed on his knees in arumpled posture.

His aged and withered hand trembled towardsone of the scones at the edge of the table, when it was suddenly smacked by hiswife with a wooden spoon .......

“B***er off” she said.

“They’re for the funeral

On Friday December 12th The Honourable Norman Lamb MP ofcally opened the new pathway along the coast at Trimingham bycutting the ribbon that crossed over the new pathway along the coast top.

( Above Right ) is Norman Lamb surrounded by members of the Coastguard team some ofwhom had started their day by walking alongthe coast from Sheringham and the rest fromSea Palling.

After the ribbon had been cut by Norman, everyone headed off to the Pilgrim shelterin Trimingham, for refreshments and thecake which really looked impressive.

Despite the day being pretty cool, if not chillyit was an enjoyable afternoon.

I would recommend going on line to visit:  www. countrysideaccess .norfolk.gov.ukwhere the NCC lists the 12 walks.

Walks range from 3.5 to approx.10 mileswith most of them being suitable foreveryone to take part in.

Whether you are a keen walker or not, this is indeed a great new walk for usall to enjoy, now or in the near future.

Overstrand Garden Centre’s advertisement.

I always enjoy the work of the Mundesley Players, as did all who attended this year’s production of A Christmas Carolon Friday the 5th December.

I have to say that Gerry Robins, who is moreoften than not among the cast of The Players pulled off the role of Ebenezer Scrooge brilliantly (tall fellow on the back row).

Likewise Paul Reynolds as his Clerk did, asto be expected every time, a brilliant job.

The work of Charles Dickens, adapted byDavid Holman, was very well interpreted by the cast in front of a full house.

The show ran for 4 nights from December 1stand despite so many other events going on atthis time of year had a very good attendance.

The children who took part in the show were so professional and did a brilliant and grand job.

Considering the size of the Mundesley villagethey always have a wonderful team on handfor their many large productions.  PK

Paternalism –v-EmpowermentWritten by Miranda Marshall – Director at Hayes + Storr

Many decades ago the section of the court systemthat then dealt with those who were mentallyincapable was the Chancery Division of theHigh Court which was said to deal with‘wills, wives and wrecks’ .

In other words, probate matters (as now),

matrimonial issues (now dealt with bytheir own court called The Family Court),and shipping matters.

The ‘wrecks’  were maritime rather than human.

Cases relating to those without mental capacitywere headed ‘In Lunacy’. That was an age of paternalism; and not always very benign.

Gradually the law in relation to those lackingmental capacity entered a world of kinder paternalism where others knew best andthe mentally incapable were treatedalmost as children.

The landscape has yet again changed and we arenow in a culture where those lacking mentalcapacity are to be ‘empowered’ wherever

possible to make decisions with whatevermeans and support is available.

The practical effect on those managing the affairsof those without mental capacity, whether by aPower of Attorney (Enduring or Lasting) or asa Court-appointed ‘Deputy’ is signicant.

The terminology of the Court and its administrativesystem is only slowly catching up with the newethos. The administrative head of the systemis called ‘The Public Guardian’ (which eventhough I have been dealing with his ofce for more than  20 years still carries ‘caped-crusader’ connotations for me).

The Mental Capacity Act 2005 is approachingits tenth birthday.

By this a person is to be assumed to have mentalcapacity and be able to make their own decisionsunless it is established that they do not.

They are to be helped to make as many of theirown decisions as possible by those managingtheir affairs. And just because someone doesnot make a wise decision it does not meanthat they are to be treated as incapable ofmaking a decision.

It is reassuring to know that even in 2014 thelaw enshrines the right of an English man orwoman to be eccentric.

Limited ServiceAt Sheringham Recycling CentreEssential work begins on Monday 5th Januaryat Sheringham Recycling Centre to upgrade thedrainage system and is anticipated to last for upto eight weeks, depending on the weather.

The recycling centre will remain open duringthis time, but it will only be able to provide alimited service as around half of the site will be closed.

The number of bins will be reduced which meansa smaller range of materials will be accepted.

Timber, metals, textiles and brick rubble willnot be accepted for recycling and containerswill be removed.

The area of the site available to the public will be limited & parking spaces reduced by half.

There will therefore be restrictions on thenumber of vehicles able to enter and leavethe site and as a result queues are likely.

During the time the work is taking place, site

users are urged to consider using the nearestalternative sites which are:

Worstead (open seven days a week) orWells (open Fri-Mon).

Hempton and Mayton Wood Plus RecyclingCentres (both open seven days a week) arealso available and both provide additionalPay As You Throw services.

For more information about recycling please

visit: www.recyclefornorfolk.org.uk

Effective surface water drainage is one of themost important environmental elements of arecycling centre’s design and this upgradewill ensure Sheringham remains compliant

with the tough regulations which protectthe environment from the impact ofdealing with waste at the site.

Site users are likely to experience disruptionduring the course of the work.

Norfolk County Council would like toapologise for any inconvenience caused.

........is coming - County Councilready to help people through thecolder months.

The recent frosty mornings area reminder that winter is just

around the corner. Norfolk County Council is ready& prepared to help people in thecounty get through the coldermonths – and is encouragingeveryone who can to dothe same.

So far this autumn the gritters haveonly been out 3 times.Temperatureshave recovered since then but expertweather forecasts supplied to thecouncil are currently predictingthat it will get colder again.

The council’s 51 gritter lorries areready to hit the road on any givenday or night and Norfolk CountyCouncil’s seven salt domes arestocked with more than 17,000tonnes of salt.

This will be replenished as & whennecessary before stocks reach theminimum level due to a long-termcontract the council has with itssupplier Salt Union.

More than 2,000 miles of Norfolk’sroads, over a 3rd of the county’snetwork, are on Norfolk CountyCouncil’s regular gritting routes, including all A and B-class roadsand some C-class roads (the A11,A47 and A12 are gritted by theHighways Agency).

In addition there are over 1,800 grit bins around the county that have  been lled by the County Councilwhich people can use on public pavements and roads.

Toby Coke, Chairman of theEnvironment, Transport andDevelopment Committee at NCC, said:

“We’re all hoping for a mild winterbut, should we get snow & ice, it’simportant that we are prepared to

help people cope and carry on with their lives as far as possible.

We’ve managed to maintain the lengthof the roads on our gritting routesover the last few years despite huge

reductions in the amount of moneywe receive from central government, but I don’t underestimate thedifculties many people stillcontend with when thetemperature drops. The best way we can cope is to lookout for each other and for everyonewho can to do their bit, whether that is the shop owners clearing snow from the pavement outside their  frontage, checking on vulnerable& older people who may struggleto get out and about, or beingmindful of the pressure all theemergency services are under

during winter and taking what  preventative steps you can toavoid needing their help.”

People are also being asked to helpeach other by getting behind thecouncil’s online information-sharing campaign designed tohelp people in the county getthrough the winter.

Throughout the winter, dailyupdates will be available onthe Norfolk Facebook page:

www.facebook.com/norfolkcc

The updates will include weatheralerts, any disruptions to servicesand whether the council’s gritters

are going out.General advice and information aboutsupport & services are also availableand photos will be posted regularly,on the dedicated Norfolk Winter  blog: www.norfolkwinter.com .

The council is asking people to helpget the word out by sharing theseupdates and posting their own, tocreate an online Norfolk Wintercommunity for people to get up-to-the-minute local information.

The ChristmasPier Show. It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas andthat is a good reason to visit The Pier Show.

Actually there are lots of good reasons.

Curtains up, and our smiling artists are readyfor a few hours of delicious festive fun.Such a pleasure to be here, such a spectacularshow put together by the accomplished teamcombining costumes, lighting, scenery, music, choreography and super script writers.

Our top Norfolk entertainer Olly Day with his‘cheeky chappie’  looks, humour and comments moved effortlessly from one scene to the nextand had us all in tears of laughter. His dancing was tu tu good.

Olly is equally at home performing solo or partof any team. ( He dubbed the theatre: ‘A shedon stilts’  - Brilliant. The sketch with Benson entitled ‘The Monologue’ was hilarious, they were revelling in each other’shumour and the chemistry between them wasapparent. Benson does a unique variety actcombining manic and humour, he has asuperb personality and is fun to watch.

A welcome return to Cromer’s own vocalistMr Eddie Bushell and a very well receivedspecial guest vocalist Lyn Paul of the‘New Seekers’  fame.

Marlene’s school of dance pupils and CromerChristmas Choir are now an established part ofthe show, as is Jo. Marlene’s youngsters have been charming and delightful since the rstshow in 2003.

A super slice of action and energy from ourdelicious dancers, who bring glamour andglitter to the stage.

There will be plenty of quiet evenings at homeand there are few better ways for the family toget into the festive spirit than an outing toThe Pier Show. You will be happy you did.

The Show runs until December 27th.

The MundesleyPageant.............starts at 6.15 pm on Christmas Eve in theBowls Club car Park opposite the Free Church.

It wends its way through the village downBack Street, via the Post Ofce and theentrance to Gold Park to the Manor Hoteland then to the Parish Church Car Park.

The ending of the Christmas Story takes placeinside the church nishing with mulled wineand mince pies. It only takes an hour.

Once again, I will be one of the three wise menthis year on Christmas Eve.

So it is a case of learning my lines and gettingit right on the night.

The last time I took part, while my fellow wisemen and I were waiting to make our entrance,I was saying how much I fancied a take awaymeal but didn’t realise that someone hadalready switched on my mike...not very wise of me!

It is a fun event and well worth goingto for you and your family.

On Tuesday December 9th, the ladies from Annamarie Sterne’sFitness League classes turned out to enjoy a jolly good lunch at Northrepps Cottage.

Annamarie (Below on Right) does a brilliant job of runningthese weekly classes all over North Norfolk.

In total there are now some 97 ladies whoenjoy these classes, including my wife Lis.

Annamarie said:We are more than just an exercise class andwhen over 50 ladies came together for this

double celebration rstly like for many other groups Christmas was the initial reason but secondly it was for everyone to raise a glassto all the new friendships they had madethrough attending my new local Fitness League classes.

Earlier this year Annamarie left her jobwithin education to start classes aroundthe North Norfolk area.

She has taught dancing for many years but this mum of four felt therewas a lack of local daytime classes for ladies of 50+ a non competitive, fun! low impact style of exercising (with great music) .Annamarie’s classes which run in Cromer, Sheringham, Mundesley,Aylsham and Fakenham focus on correct posture, mobility of jointsand the strengthening of muscles.

Fitness League ( previously known as ‘the league of health & beauty’ )will be 85 years old next year, with such an amazing history and stillgoing strong, this is conrmed by the almost 100 ladies who attendAnnamarie’s classes and believe in the benets of these exercises.

One of the ladies said:“ the classes are great, including lots of stretch & balance. They are notaerobic but gentle with nice dance music. We work hard but Annamariemakes it fun as well. I fully recommend it as a exercise class for all ages.

New Members are always very welcome.

For further details about classes see the advertabove or to book a place call Annamarie on:01263-511 169 or 07989 285 599
