DVAR TORAHRosh Chodesh Elul - August 26-27 is the beginning of themonth of Elul. Moshe Rabbeinu went up on this day toreceive the second Luchot (Tablets), which he broughtdown 40 days later, on Yom Kippur. To commemorate this, there is a custom to blow the Shofar every morning in Shulduring Elul, with the exception of Shabbat and Erev RoshHashana.Selichot - begin September 20. We recite specialpenitentary prayers in the days leading up to Rosh Hashanathrough Yom Kippur, highlighted by the recitation of the 13Attributes, imploring G-d to forgive us in the merit of thecovenant He made with our Forefathers.Rosh Hashana - September 24-26. On Wednesday eveningSeptember 24 we begin the Jewish New Year of 5775. Wethalso begin the period known as the Aseret Yemay Teshuva,Ten Days of Repentance. A most solemn time, RoshHashana commemorates the anniversary of mankindscreation after the creation of the world six days earlier. During the two days of Rosh Hashana, G-d judges theentire world and inscribes the fate of all life. As Jews, werecite various prayers to express our aspirations, and we eatmany symbolic foods in hopes of bringing special blessings. During Rosh Hashanah, we observe the custom of Tashlich(this year on the first day of Rosh Hashana), in which we goto living bodies of water and recite prayers, thussymbolically casting off our sins, as well as to seek meritfor the deeds of our forefather Abraham who, according tothe Midrash, was forced to cross a sea in order to fulfill G-ds command to bring his son Isaac to Mount Moriah.

A major focus of Rosh Hashana is the blowing ofthe shofar. One hundred kolot, or notes, blown duringvarious portions of the service remind us of the Almightyscoronation as King of the Universe, awaken our sleepinghearts from their lethargy to return to the Almighty and helpus recount the story of Abraham sacrificing a ram in placeof his son. We pray for forgiveness for the previous yearstransgressions and implore the Creator for a year where wewill perform Mitzvot unstintingly, a year of good health, peace and prosperity on the merit of our teshuva -repentance.

We make an Eruv Tavshillin before candlelighting on September 24, October 8 and 15. This allows usto cook food on Yom Tov for Shabbat, which beginsimmediately after Yom Tov. A special bracha is made overtwo rolls or matzot and a cooked food, commonly a piece offish or chicken. The Bracha, which can be found in theArtScroll Siddur (p. 654), is Baruch Ata Ad-nai (G-dsName) El-heinu melech haolam asher kidishanubmitzvotav vitzivanu al mitzvat eruv. The accompanyingBdin Eruvah declaration should also be recited. This foodmust be set aside and eaten on Shabbat. We do this eachWednesday September 24, October 8 and 15. Tzom Gedaliah - Sunday, September 28. The fast day ofTzom Gedaliah is usually on the day after Rosh Hashanaunless, like this year, that day is Shabbos, in which case wefast on Sunday. The fast commemorates the murder ofGedaliah ben Achikam, who was a Jewish leader appointedby our conquerors after the destruction of the First Templein 586 B.C.E. With his assassination by one of hiscountrymen, Jews lost their stake in self-rule even in theDiaspora. The fast begins at 5:22 am and ends at 7:03 pm.Yom Kippur - October 3-4. Yom Kippur is the unique dayof the year dedicated to forgiveness, mercy and conciliationbetween G-d and the Jewish people. This year it begins onFriday evening, October 3, with the ceremony of Kol Nidre,a prayer to annul any unfulfilled oaths or vows. Speech isthe attribute that distinguishes man from the rest of theanimal kingdom. Accordingly, we are very concerned withthe punishments that may occur for deliberate or accidentaltransgressions concerning our speech. The holiest day ofthe year, Yom Kippur, commemorates G-ds forgiveness ofthe Israelites, whose sin was the worship of the golden calfafter they received the Ten Commandments. It is a daywhen we are commanded to shed our earthly limitations andaspire to emulate the angels. Accordingly, we abstain fromeating, drinking, wearing leather shoes, using lotions, washing and marital relations. By observing theseprohibitions, we transcend our physical existence and areelevated to a higher spiritual state, so we are better able topray for ourselves, our loved ones, our families and for allof Israel. On Yom Kippur, G-d evaluates our actions duringthe Ten Days of Repentance and determines whether ouractions were sincere or empty. On the merit of repentance, prayer and charity, we are able to avert the severe decreethat may have been ordained during Rosh Hashanah.

Sukkot begins Wednesday evening, October 8, andcontinues through October 15. It commemorates the timewhen G-d took the Jewish people out of Egypt and housedthem in the Annanei Hakavod - Clouds of Glory thatprotected the Jewish people; therefore we dwell in sukkot,or temporary huts. The first two days of Sukkot are knownas yom tov (holidays) where most melechah (creativeactivity) is prohibited. They are followed by CholHamoed (Intermediate Days), which are hybrid, in thatthey have aspects of both holidays and regular week days.

  • When eating in the succah, we invite sevenUshpizin or guests, essential leaders of the Jewish people:Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Joseph, Moses, Aaron and KingDavid who each represents one of the seven spiritualattributes needed to perfect our souls in service of theCreator.

Every day of Sukkot, with the exception of Shabbat, when they are not touched, one blessing is recited over thefour species - the Etrog, Lulav, Hadasim and Aravot. Thefirst time we take them on the holiday, we also reciteShehechiyanu. On the last of the intermediate days, knownas Hoshanah Rabbah, we make seven circuits around theBimah, after which willows are beaten on the floor tosymbolize the end of the high holiday period of judgement.Shemini Atzeret/Simchat Torah October 15-17 AtSukkots end, Jews immediately celebrate the holidays ofShemini Atzeret and Simchat Torah. The Midrash, or Biblecommentary, teaches that on Sukkot we are concerned withall humanity because in the Temple we offered 70 sacrificesduring Sukkot, corresponding to the 70 nations of the world. However, Shemini Atzeret and Simchat Torah is a holidayjust for the Almighty and the Jewish people. The holidaysremind us that material needs and wants are fleetingillusions; the realm of the spirit is the only true andpermanent domain. We recite the Yizkor, memorial prayer, during Shemini Atzeret to remember those who have gonebefore us and set out paths for us to follow. On SimchatTorah, Jews dance and rejoice with their entire being as weconclude the reading of the Torah, and then, immediatelybegin reading the Torah once again. In spite of tremendousadversity, oppression and exile, we have been promised thatthe Torah will always guard and protect us. Even if all elseis taken away from the Jewish people, the Torah willalways remain.

A Little Bit About Kesser MaarivWelcome to Kesser Maariv. Our full name is BethHamedrosh Hagodol Kesser Maariv Anshe Luknik. We havea long name reflective of our long history. Our first minyantook place in Chicago in 1865, and the Beth HamedroshHagodol officially opened in 1867 in downtown Chicago. Eventually the Shul moved to the West Side, and we haveseveral congregants who celebrated their Bar Mitzvah at thatsite. After several mergers, in the 1950s BHH moved to EastRogers Park when it merged with Kesser Maariv. Due to

shifting demographics, Kesser Maariv sold their building inEast Rogers Park in 1989, determined to continue in a newneighborhood. In the following years, High Holiday serviceswere held in West Rogers Park.In 1993, we held High Holiday services in Skokie, and wewere able to purchase our current property in Skokie. Regularminyanim began in an existing farmhouse on December 31,1993. In autumn 1999 the first phase of our building wascompleted, consisting of the Social Hall and kitchens. Thesecond phase of the Main Sanctuary and Bais Midrash werecompleted in 2004.LeadershipRabbi Louis Lazovsky has been Rabbi of Kesser Maariv since1984, when he succeeded Rabbi Zev Wein, who retired. Rabbi Lazovsky has served the Jewish community in manycapacities for over 35 years, including leading educationalprograms and organizations to benefit immigrants and theunderprivileged. In January 2011 the Board of Directors appointed Rabbi BenZion Lazovsky to serve as Associate Rabbi in addition toserving as Executive Director. Our DaveningFor the High Holidays, we use the ArtScroll Machzor. This practice is mentioned in theShulchan Aruch, the Code of Jewish Law. The auction isconducted immediately prior to taking out the Torah. Our Chazzanim are Dr. Edward Kaplan and Rabbi Dr.Pinchas Eisenbach who have been leading our High HolidayServices since 1994. Rabbi Ben Zion Lazovsky has blownthe Shofar for many years and also serves as Chazzan. RabbiEli Lazovsky reads the Torah.Yizkor AppealThere is an ancient custom, mentioned in the Talmud, thateven those who have passed away need atonement. How canthose souls, who are no longer on this earth, achieveatonement? The Talmud says that charity should be given ontheir behalf. Accordingly, Kesser Maariv has a live YizkorAppeal. If you would like to have your pledge announced atthe beginning of the appeal, please contact Rabbi Ben Zionbefore Yom Tov and make your pledge before Yom Tov.
