You canrsquot take a bad picture in Madagascar and with the right light and a steady hand you can create something truly amazing The

mind-blowing variety of wildlife observable here is pivotal to the rich heritage and iconic natural beauty of this island

But all that you see through your lens is fragile

Many of Madagascarrsquos iconic species are endangered The second-greatest threat to Madagascarrsquos wildlife after habitat loss is traffickingmdashthe illegal trade of animals and plants

Like the illegal trade in drugs and weapons the trafficking of wildlife is often coordinated by criminal organizations and the revenues generated go on to fund further illegal (and sometimes terror-related) activities

Each year the Madagascar Customs Service seizes hundreds of illegally trafficked species often finding them hidden in luggage and stashed in ingenious concealments The penalty for this attempted illegal export is up to $65000 andor up to 10 years in a Malagasy prison

Wild animals need to remain wild Before having a lsquopetrsquo lemur on your shoulder for a fun photo or taking a colorful chameleon home to keep you company consider the consequences to yourself and the people of Madagascar

The wildlife of Madagascar should be viewed in their natural habitats where they can prosper and everyone can enjoy them Visiting national parks and reserves throughout the country gets you incredibly close and contributes to the well-being of these animals and the local human communities as well

Tous les ans le service des douanes de Madagascar saisit des centaines drsquoespegraveces trafiqueacutees illeacutegalement souvent trouveacutees dans les bagages et dissimuleacutees de faccedilon ingeacutenieuse La sanction pour une tentative drsquoexportation illeacutegale est le paiement drsquoune amende jusqursquoagrave 65000 USD ou un emprisonnement jusqursquoagrave 10 ans dans une prison malagasy
