N othing feels better than seeing an influx of fresh blood into the university in the form of freshmen. It provides abreath of fresh air, while refreshing and rejuvenating every entity affiliated with the university, not to mention replacing

the deadwood at the same time. Good to see you fresh faces lighting up the whole university with your mere

presence. Hola and I would like to extend both arms welcoming in all of you to the big family, accompanied with the

clich of Congratulations and Welcome to Multimedia University!

I bet that all of you are tingling with both sheer excitement and also nervousness, having the sense of

butterflies in your stomach, a mixed concoction of feelings creeping into your very soul. Truth to be told, making the

big leap to University from your previous institution can be daunting to say the least. Its such a leap that some might

not cope with the rigours of it and just get left behind. To say that it is an affair that either exasperate or enthral is a

mere understatement. But fret not, guidance and assistance will always be afforded by seniors and lecturers, whichare shining beacons of light, lighting your way through the dark tunnel.

Technically I wouldnt qualify much as a senior to you guys since Id only enrolled to this university about

less than a year ago, but have faith and trust me that the transition would be a smooth one if you adhere to the usual

protocols of adapting and fitting in. You would be helped by friends alike and also from the Orientation Committee. A

first you might feel like a fish out of water, but in time you will learn that speaking and voicing out is not that bad afte

all, sure there will be some awkward and embarrassing moments, but remember that life is never a bed of roses. Just

get up on your feet and try again, even after you fail in the face of adversity and hostility, because its better to try and

fail, than not trying at all.

Dont be afraid to speak and act out of your skin, be outspoken and voice out your opinions and thoughts

if you happen to have something you are clueless about, lecturers and seniors wont gobble you up for asking a

question, instead they will extend a hand for help. The goal is to learn from your mistake and not commit it again.

The purpose of learning is growth, and our minds, unlike our bodies, can continue growing as

we continue to live. ~Mortimer Adler . Thus it is very clear to push that barrier of conservativeness thatconstrains your potential, be yourself and it will exudes confidence that gives you an aura of near invincibility.

And it does help to be friendly to everyone, because we learn our trades in the hierarchy in University that

might help when we graduate and enter the real world. Besides, it takes less muscle to smile than to frown. So cheer

up and live life to the fullest, remember that it is about being fit like what our motto suggests, both mentally and

physically. Enjoy your stay here and I hope you enjoy your very own Freshmans Guide presented to you humbly by

    the Student Publication Board. Cheers!

B eing in a new environment is often never easy for there is somewhat a sense of loneliness especially for those far from the comforts of home, the awkwardnesstowards new places and people as well as the struggle to fit in. When it comes touniversity, it is a whole new realm to explore and a leap from anything imaginableendured. It opens doors to opportunities, tragedies and hardship; altogether theelements to survive in the real world. Interactions are a mean of survival. Friends areimportant, especially when it comes to being a university student. The very person to

which one greets with a Hi! could eventually end up being the very person to haveyour back through thick or thin; resulting in the formation of friendship as well as theco-dependency of people. There is also a chance where such a person might end uphurting you instead, also a natural occurrence in life. These are the many things thatnature unfolds, either ways part and parcel in shaping an individual to be better.

The idea of being alone or going by alright on your own is by all meansimpossible. The importance of friendship in this concept is very important especiallythroughout the whole period of being in university. Being in university is to step up

your game, to finally step out of your comfort zone. Fight whatever sense of shynessand move forward by making it a habit to get to know the person sitting next to youin class. A little hello or a how are you could do wonders. True, it can be difficult attimes to approach new people. However, sometimes it just requires you to quitsuppressing your personality and put yourself out there, exposing yourself to anypotentially uncomfortable situations. The effort eventually pays off.

A university can be said to be the pothole for social grouping to occur. It isan ordinary occurrence to meet new people in the same classrooms and be that as itmay, this is the most convenient means to form personal connections with. Throughthis, it opens up an opportunity to understand and work together when it comes toassignments and group work. Eventually, as time goes by, some of them would endup more different than what you have thought, thus causing regret even for makingthose personal connections for they would be people you will be dealing with on adaily basis. So, it is advisable to take this type of social grouping with caution.Nevertheless, you should make the effort to be more outspoken as well as beingcordial to the people around you. Who knows, the person whom you flashed a smileand a Hi! might end up being the best of your pals for the many years to come inuniversity.

In reality, my lecturer actually deducted 10 marks from his coursework for skippingclasses. There are no apple trees in Malaysia and there is no possibility of someonemisplacing his hips; thus turning up for class a week later. Heres some advicepeople, never skip class and never risk the wrath of your lecturers.

What to Do if You Know You Will Be Missing a Class If you know that you will be missing several classes in a row, speak to your professor. If he gives you a piece of his mind, just accept it. Try not to miss any homework assignments. Get the assignments from your professor or a classmate if necessary. Catch up with your course mates on recent lessons. It is very important for you todo that. Meet with your study group so that you can review any information you may havemissed. If you woke up late, tell the truth. Lecturers will accept these reasons. Dont ever, ever, ever fall off an apple tree.

    If you attend class

Remember not to depend on online notes forever. Online notes cover the basicsand fundamentals but that will not be enough for exams. You have to attend classand actually listen to the lecturers. People, NEVER skip a tutorial. Even if you skip aclass, its easy to catch up. Skip a tutorial, youre doomed. If it happens to be boring,

find something useful to do. Bring the necessary books, stationery or multimediaequipment. Sometimes, you might need an earphone, laptop, calculator or pendrives to beg your lecturer for the slides. Keep your phones in silent mode andnever bring mp3s, mp4s or even iPads to the class. Another advice, never ever sit inthe back rows of the class. That row is the marked zone for the spoilt brats by thelecturers.

Smiles and find me whenever you need tips. Ahoy, mateys! Sail smooth and crankup life in MMU. Aye, ladies and gentlemen. Paper allows me only limits. See yousoon!

Dont miss a meeting Since were in university now and classes and studying takes up a lot of time, not

to mention time for entertainment and relaxation, theres little free time left.Usually clubs would meet only when there is a need to; when theres an event

coming up, or when an urgent matter needs attending to. Missing one meetingcan mean missing a lot so try not to miss any. One meeting could have a lot of

valuable and important information and updates.

Join with friend(s)Its always better to have company if youre in a new and alien environment.Clubs will be filled with people who already know each other, and in most cases, they are friends. You will probably become friends in time, but meanwhile, havingfriends you already know will keep you motivated to go to meetings and keepactive. Anything done with friend would feel fun and not so much like work.

Stay activeTry to stay active in the club(s) that you joined, and keep the number of clubs to aminimum; only as much as you can handle while juggling academics at the same

time. Keeping it small would give you more time and focus to dedicate to the club.Once you fall off the wagon, its pretty hard to get back on it.

Get behind the scenesMost of the work; and the fun happen behind the scenes in these clubs. Dont justcome to the events, help plan them. It goes without saying that joining thecommittee needs more work and effort from you, but it would be worth it in theend.

Join what you likeTheres no point in forcing yourself to join a club that youre not interested in justto follow your friend(s). Choose a club that you either are familiar with or you havean interest in. This will increase your chances of staying active, being motivated, and actually helping out in events and activities.

Learn new thingsTheres a lot of learning opportunities in university, and some of it does not come

in slides shown in classes. By joining clubs, you can take up a new skill or trainyourself to be better in what you already know. You can also ask other membersfor help and advice; sharing knowledge and experiences are what clubs are for.

    Theres no end to learning.

Every student and staff has an emailaddress. Some lecturers will email thestudents at the given email address, therefore it is quite important to check it fromtime to time.

We have a website for our library. There arelots of services provided by the library thatcan be accessed from here. One of the mostimportant things is the Past Year Exampapers that can be downloaded from thissite.

This is where you would find theannouncements from theadministration, faculties, clubs, societies and other sources. A very warm welcome and greetings to all the newbies to another important part of your lifes many journeys, the life of a university student; the phase where all of youwill finally get to experience and discover a different part of yourself. The issue of getting lost is often a much feared occurrence especially when it comes to entering aforeign terrain. It is terribly normal as even I had been pretty much in your shoes in thepast. Bear in mind that with the aid of the Orientation Committee as well as your owndetermination, getting around the campus is going to be easier than you know it.

The first step is to always pay the fullest of attention during the orientation asyou will be shown around every nook and cranny of the campus. Unlike mostuniversities, MMU is quite easy to get about and with time youll come to recognizeand familiarize yourself with the surroundings.

The classrooms are aplenty and labeled with their own significant code whichdiffers by far from the typical classroom labeling that youve come to know. Most of thevenues are given codes such as ACR2001, CLCR0003, FBLR 2023, or FSER0011.The combination of letters and numberings actually is a sum of the building, floor aswell as room or lab in which your class is located.

It is a good idea as well for you to make your own campus tour by getting

together with a bunch of friends and explore the campus. Find out what is where andwhich is what. By the way, classes in MMU are not that difficult to find but it iscomplicated and definitely needs a little bit of intelligence to get by. Think of your classes as a riddle to the Da Vinci Code; its up to you to solve it in order to reach your destination.

M alacca is a state with two worlds in it. A city where you can explore andappreciate the rich heritage and history; at the same time enjoy the development

thats happening around you. It is a small, friendly place with many eye-catchingsights and attractive modern establishments. It is easy to go around on foot or trishawexploring the many places that make Malacca unique. As you explore them, you'lllearn about the rich heritage and history that has shaped the landscape and left amark on Malaysia's cultural lifestyle.

Most of the interesting tourist spots in Malacca are concentrated in the centre of thecity. The famous Jonker Walk or Jalan Hang Jebat is known for its extensive antiquepieces and great food options. New cafes and specialty stores constellate the area

subtly which only add charm to this amazing lane.

If you happen to be a big fan of museums andhistory; then you my friend, have come to the rightplace to study because Malaccas tourism is largelydependent on its cultural heritage hence theypreserve it as much as they can. Here, you can findmany remarkable museums especially in theBandar Hilir area. A Famosa Fort and St. Paul Hill

can also be found in this area.

Climbing up the hill of St. Paul, you will find the ruinsof St. Paul's Church, another heritage structure of Malacca. The best part about this climb is that onceyou get on top of the hill; you get to feast your eyeson these amazing view of Malacca city and for freetoo if I might add!

I am pretty sure you have heard about the famous A'Famosa Fort which is among the oldest existingEuropean architectural remains in Asia.

It was once an enormous and powerful structure and only the tiny gate survivedovertime. Stadthuys on the other hand, is the big red building that stood next to thestairway of St. Paul's church. Both these places do not charge for entrance fees.If you happen to be around the city area, dont forget to pass through Malaccas veryown Little Indian Street. For those food lovers, there are many restaurants to choose

from; a personal favourite of mine would be Selvams Restaurant. Voted as one of Malaccas best Indian restaurant, this is a great local restaurant serving typical TamilNadu (South-Indian) cuisine at a great price. They also offer local classics such as roti

canai, fresh lassis and a selection of naans with tandoori chicken (from 5pm). Its avery clean open-kitchen restaurant, with friendly staffs and quick services.

Northeast of Malacca town, travellers can find the largest Chinese cemetery outsideof China. Bukit China's tombs dates back to the Ming Dynasty and are well kept by theethnic community. One of the oldest landmarks in Malacca is the Kampung Keling

Mosque. It was built by Indian Muslim traders in the 18th century and it features theunique architectural influence of Sumatra while the Cheng Hoon Teng temple isbelieved to be the oldest Chinese temple in Malaysia. It is a Buddhist temple richlydecorated with mythological figures and breathtaking wood carvings and furnishings.Malacca also offers sandy beaches off shores, the two main islands to visit are PulauBesar which is a beach haven and Pulau Upeh, a nature lover's paradise. Pulau Upehis also home to the rare Hawksbill turtle. These islands can be accessed by taking aferry from Jeti Anjung Batu in Umbai.

For those shopping addicts, Malacca offersabundant choices of shopping malls, the nearestones to the campus would be the Jusco Mall andMelaka Mall. You can either take the bus or taxi; bybus it costs about RM 1.20 and by taxi it costsabout RM 8.00. But, if you want to experience thereal sensation of proper shopping, I suggest youeither go to Dataran Pahlawan or Mahkota Parade

which is situated opposite of the former. Its easy toget there; once you get down at Melaka Sentral, you just have a find a bus that says DATARAN PAHLAWAN/MAHKOTA PARADE or better yet, if you happen to come across an uncle shouting words that sounds likeMP! MP! DP! DP!, then, thats where you queue! You could even visit the newlyopened Under Water World/Coral Wonderland at Dataran Pahlawan. If you likephotography you will spend a few hours there easily. Despite not having those largefishes like sharks, they do feature some beautiful small fishes. Entrance fee is aboutRM30 for adults.

When it comes to finding food, places like Jonker Street owns a legacy for their streetsnacks. But if youre much more of a refined eater, then there are numerous places tocater for your stomach!

So there you have it; Malacca! There are so many other places that I could talk aboutbut that would take another 5 pages! Try getting a few Malaccan friends to take youout; they probably know every nook and corner of these places. Till then, good luck

AN International students Perspectivewritten by Olebile Mosane

L eave your parents, go to University, study hard, then come back and be expertin what you studied in your country. Basically thats what every student aspires for and international students are no exception. But life is all-full of twists and turns andwe need to learn from them. We all learn from each other and you definitely canlearn something from reading this piece. As an International student, take a minuteor two to read this piece to identify challenges that you may face to make thebeginning of your life here in Malaysia a smooth sailing.

I am sure when you applied for this university you were recommended to itby someone, if thats not the case, don't worry, you will still be fine as I will guide

you throughout what you should expect here. If you know a senior here then thatwill make your life even easier. I am from Botswana and I am willing to share myexperience in Malaysia to all freshies alike.

Malaysia is a very nice country to live in. Most people here are nice andhelpful. Some may not have a good command of the Queen's language, but if youbear with them they will eventually get their message across, some will improviseusing sign language but that rarely happen. Most locals here use a different type of English to ours called Singlish or Manglish. It will take some time for you to get

used to it. Though widely spoken, lecturers don't use it in classes, theycommunicate with good English so don't worry about the English barrier affectingyour academic life.

The first days when you get here you will definitely have a deep feeling of homesickness; there will be a lot of things that will be strange and new to you, for example the climate. If you are from a dry area it will get you at least two days tobreathe in properly. All the air that you will take in during your first days will feelvery hot, humid, smelling strange and unnatural but after a few days you willacclimatize. The weather here is hot and humid with lots of rain. It gets to a pointwhere it rains daily. Although we all love rain, its no fun when rain catches youwhilst you are walking somewhere so do yourself a favor and buy an umbrella.

Calling your parents just to inform them about your trip and how everythingis going so far should be the first thing on your to do list. International phone callsare a bit expensive but communication is quite cheap around here. It will be bestfor you to choose the best communication plan such as Digi, Hotlink or Celcom.

Once youve arrived in Malacca you will be offered accommodation by afew companies or agents in places like Emerald Park (EP), Ixora, University Green,University View and BBU. You can trust them, they will give you the assurance thatyou crave for. You can look for a house on your own. Finding a house on your ownis not a very difficult thing if you already know someone like a senior, but all in all if it's just you it is just better to stay at EP or Ixora until you are sure of what you arelooking for. You can even stay in campus hostels. Rest assured that youll have agreat stay in Malaysia and do enjoy it to the fullest.

I m pretty sure all of you fresh minds are acquainted with the aforementioned oldadage. By making the significant leap from secondary to university, you are carvinga whole new chapter in your life. Forget the days in secondary when you can bespoon fed on information for tests and exams, where you are offered the liberty andprivilege to just memorize every teeny-weeny detail in the book and burn it into theback of your skull, and just regurgitate it out during examinations, of which theaftermath or aftereffect is that almost everyone fails to retain that particular recollection of information. The old learning method is unreliable and definitely notfool-proof, so how can you ply your trades and survive the rigors of university? The

key is to identify your own unique and personal learning styles and methodology, and Ill shed some light on this issue and guide you through the fundamentals.

The learning process can either be exasperating or enthralling for astudent. But instead of shunning it, you should first start by embracing it; after all itis through acceptance that you take your first step towards taking in newknowledge, by first opening yourself to it. Thomas Szasz states that every act of conscious learning requires the willingness to suffer an injury to one's self-esteem.That is why, before they are aware of their own self-importance, young childrenlearn so easily. So take off the shackles and open yourself to new boundaries, newknowledge.

All of you might think that imitation is a form of flattery, having a tendencyto use the old method of learning, feeling obliged even, to just use the samemethod of memorizing and regurgitating. However, it does not help in the long run,it will instead result in maladaptation transcending into university level. It may behard to adjourn and adhere straightaway to a new method, but flexibility and

dynamism is definitely the key here.

The first thing that pops out in your mind should be identification of your personal learning styles. One of the most widely used models of learning styles isthe Index of Learning Styles developed by Richard Felder and Linda Silverman inthe late 1980s. It goes like this; there are four dimensions of learning styles. Thinkof each dimensions as a continuum with one learning preference on the far left andthe other on the far right.

Balance is key. You don't want to get too far on any one side of the learningdimensions. When you do that you limit your ability to take in new information andto make sense of it quickly, accurately, and effectively. So how do you balance outthe equation?

    #27

  • 7/31/2019 Freshmen COMPLETE

    29/34

Here are some tips on how to balance your learning preference and styles:

Sensory Learners if you rely too much on sensing, you tend to prefer what isfamiliar, and concentrate on facts you know instead of being innovative andadapting to new situations. Seek out opportunities to learn theoretical informationand then bring in facts to support or negate these theories.

Intuitive Learners if you rely too much on intuition you risk missing importantdetails, which can lead to poor decision-making and problem solving. Forceyourself to learn facts or memorize data that will help you defend or criticize atheory or procedure you are working with. You may need to slow down and look atthe details you would otherwise typically skim.

Visual Learners if you concentrate more on pictorial or graphical informationthan on words, you put yourself at a distinct disadvantage because verbal andwritten information is still the main preferred choice for delivery of information.Practice taking notes and seek out opportunities to explain information to othersusing words.

Verbal Learners when information is presented in diagrams, sketches, flowcharts, and so on, it is designed to be understood quickly. If you can develop your skills in this area you can significantly reduce time spent learning and absorbinginformation. Look for opportunities to learn through audio-visual presentations(such as CD-ROM and Webcasts.) When taking notes, group information accordingto concepts and then create visual links with arrows going to and from them. Takeevery opportunity you can to create charts and tables and diagrams.

Active Learners if you act before you think you are apt to make hasty andpotentially ill-informed judgments. You need to concentrate on summarizingsituations, and taking time to sit by yourself to digest the information you have beengiven before jumping in and discussing it with others.

Reflective Learners if you think too much you risk doing nothing. ever. Therecomes a time when a decision has to be made or an action taken. Involve yourself in group decision-making whenever possible and try to apply the information youhave in as practical a manner as possible.

Sequential Learners when you break things down into small components youare often able to dive right into problem solving. This seems to be advantageousbut can often be unproductive. Force yourself to slow down and understand whyyou are doing something and how it is connected to the overall purpose or

objective. Ask yourself how your actions are going to help you in the long run. If youcan't think of a practical application for what you are doing then stop and do somemore "big picture" thinking.

By knowing your own personal and distinct learning styles, you will now beable to take in new knowledge easier. For example, start by determining whether you study better alone or within groups, which should settle your environmentproblem. If you are a social learner, create more group studies with friends for dissemination of information within your group and aiding in your learning as well. If you are a solitary learner, find a place that is serene and devoid of distractions or noises that may disrupt your learning process and there you go, problem solved.Remember, the key is to find balance and be well-rounded.

Take time to identify how you prefer to learn and then force yourself tobreak out of your comfort zone. Once you start learning in new ways you'll beamazed at how much more you catch, and how much easier it is to assimilateinformation and make sense of what is going on. Learning is like rowing upstream:

not to advance is to drop back. So best of luck from yours truly and enjoy your stayin MMU. Cheers!
