    4ritics say that the term &reality television& is somewhat o" a misnomer and that such shows "re*uently

    portray a modi"ied and hi#hly in"luenced "orm o" reality$ with participants put in e(otic locations or

    a!normal situations$ sometimes coached to act in certain ways !y o""screen handlers$ and with events on

    screen manipulated throu#h editin# and other postproduction techni*ues.

    5art o" reality television6s appeal is due to its a!ility to place ordinary people in e(traordinary situations. 7or

    show and control the daytoday activities and the environment$ creatin# a completely "a!ricated world in

    which the competition plays out.
