    ticular attention to the so-called ophiolite zone (whichalso intrigued Mijo Kipati, the originator and founderof Croatian petrography, whom Pami also highlyrespected), to which he contributed several seminalcontributions. His early papers already dealt with thistopic, even before the advent of plate tectonics, and

    Pami assumed the ultramafites originated in the deep-est part of the lithosphere or upper mantle, respectively,paying particular attention to the eclogitic-amphiboliticrocks. Therefore he was also elected a member of theeditorial board of the journal Ofioliti.

    More recently, Jaka focused his attention on thenorth-western extension of the Vardar zone, i.e., itscontinuation from the eastern Dinarides through northBosnia to northwestern Croatia, central Slovenia andthe contact with the Alps. He interpreted it as a continu-ation of the Periadriatic lineament into the contact area

    between the Dinarides and the Tisia/Moesia. However,

    he also worked on numerous other geological problems:he studied Triassic, Late Cretaceous, Palaeogene, andNeogene magmatism of the Dinarides, and he wasthe first in Croatia to deal with isotope geochemistry(in collaboration with colleagues from the USA). Inshort, he was engaged in the investigation of numerousgeological, petrological, and geochemical problems ofalmost all magmatic complexes, both in the Dinaridesand the Pannonian Basin, also including the Variscangranitic and metamorphic complexes of our so-calledinsular mountains in Slavonia. To all these topics healways used the polythematic (or multidisciplinary)approach.

    In the meantime, he spent a year (1975/76) as aprofessor at the International University in Shiraz, Iran,where he taught petrology and isotope geochemistry.In 1981 he returned to Zagreb, as a senior scientistat the Institute of Geology, and, in addition to that,was invited to lecture, as a part-time professor, in thegraduate study of geology at the Faculty of Science ofZagreb University, the course entitled Magmatism andmetamorphism of the orogenic belts. In 1992 Jakawas elected a corresponding member of the CroatianAcademy of Sciences and Arts, though, judging by hisscientific achievements, he deserved to be elected a fullmember. Unfortunately, he didnt live to see that mer-ited recognition. His retirement in 1995 did not weakenhis scientific activity, neither in the domestic nor in theinternational field. Therefore it was more than deservedthat he became, in 1999, the recipient of the state awardfor life achievement in natural sciences. This was theonly official award he ever received.

    As previously mentioned, Jaka was author of morethan 300 scientific papers, which were published ina wide array of international and domestic journals.About 60 of his papers were published in journalsreferred to in the Current Contents Database. In addi-tion, he was the author or coauthor of a dozen or somonographs, deliberately written in Croatian in orderto be of maximum use for domestic geologists; for half

    of these monographs he was sole author. Therefore,he was not only the most productive, but also themost widely internationally cited Croatian geologist,(as supported by over 160 citations within the last tenyears in the quotation index). It is obvious that he wasan exceptionally industrious and hard-working person;

    but he also stimulated other people, i.e. those who knewhow to appreciate his enthusiasm and profit from hisbroad knowledge. I can safely say that I know severalyounger colleagues whom Jaka helped to broaden theirgeological horizons and to view their particular geolog-ical problems seamlessly embedded in a broader, evenglobal, geological framework. I am quite sure that thesecolleagues would confirm these words, if asked to.

    Some reproached him for writing too much. Imyself sometimes criticized him for having writtentoo profusely on a locally or regionally restricted topic.Jakas answer to such reproach was that geology was

    the only job he knew how to do; therefore he did it tire-lessly and with maximum enthusiasm. Many foreigncolleagues recognized that and therefore, in addition to

    being chief investigator or collaborator on a number ofdomestic projects, he was often invited abroad to par-ticipate at various international scientific conferencesand symposia, where he delivered a number of notabletalks, most of which were subsequently published as

    papers in peer-reviewed journals. He was chief inves-tigator on five international projects, and a participantin two CroatianUSA collaborative projects some tenyears ago. By incorporating his own geological per-ceptions into mainstream global geology, Jaka con-tributed, more than any other Croatian geologist of his(and younger) generation, to the recognition of Croatiangeoscience in international, European and world-widearenas. It is worth mentioning that as early as 1973, i.e.more than 30 years ago, Jaka wrote a review article

    the first one to be published in the former Yugoslavia on the factography and application of plate tectonics,and he consistently applied that new, geological para-digm in all his papers, just as he always placed his pet-rological work into a broader geological setting.

    Being a scientist, Jaka did not believe in life afterdeath. Nevertheless, we may send him this last mes-sage: Dear Jaka, even if we do not always, and inevery detail agree with some of your geological percep-tions, and even if we do not always and without reser-vation accept all of your geological interpretations, thisis how it should be in geology, as well as in any othertrue science. However, you have erected to yourself aneverlasting monument in both Croatian, and worldwidegeology. We who had the privilege to be your friendsduring your life shall remember you forever, and yourname and your opus will be the model and stimulusfor generations of geologists to come. May you rest in

    peace in this earth as you so enthusiastically studied allyour life!
