    KAEA4234 FOUNDATION ENGINEERING

CLASS PROJECT FOR SEMESTER 1, (2015/2016)

    Section A - Introduction

University of Malaya plans to construct a lookout tower of 10m -15m height, located

near the varsity lake in front of the Faculty of Engineering. The tower may be

constructed either by using concrete or steel, and the working area provided by the

university management for this project is 5m x 5m. Figures below may be referred as

a general idea of the said lookout tower.

This project consists of two parts; Part I and II. Every student in the group of 4 or 5

    should submit two sets of reports;

    i. Part I Soil Exploration (20 Marks)

ii. Part II Design Applications (20 Marks)

The field and laboratory test results may be similar within the group however allstudents must discuss their findings and perform calculations individually.

Further explanation on this project may be referred on the next section of this project

    assignment question.

Kindly refer to your spectrum account for group distribution.

(Note: Report should be properly compiled, type-written and not more than 15 pages

including sketches and photographs. Indicate the role of each member on the project).

Section B Further explanation and additional questions

All questions should be answered and documented properly in the respective reports.

Part I SOIL EXPLORATION (20 Marks)

Students are required to conduct site visitand hence suggest possible SI methodthat

might be adopted to gain necessary information to enable foundation design to be

carried out. In the report, state your observations of the site and hence provide

reasons/ justifications for your selection of SI method.

    1.

What are relevant site conditions to be established for this project?

    2.

What will be two field tests that can be carried out to establish site conditions for

    this project?

    3. Describe lab tests that can be done to determine design parameters.

    4. Explain your role in this project.

PART II DESIGN APPLICATIONS (20 Marks)

Based on the results obtained from Part I of this project identify and study the

suitable foundation designs of the structure. Justify your selection of the type of

    foundation clearly in the report.

    1. Please show how the calculation for foundation loading is determined.

    2.

Please indicate how soil parameters are established for foundation design based ona. Laboratory testing

    b. Field testing

    3. Please show calculations for the design of foundation

(e.g. soil bearing capacity calculations, etc.)

    4. Explain your role in this project.
