WHEN you think of American food, what delicious, sugary,u

deep-fried treat comes to mind?† It’s the doughnut, right?

This snack may not be as American as you think, though. Its

history may have begun in another country altogether.1

Many people claim2 that the modern doughnut came from a

snack that was made in the Netherlands. It was originally a ball

of doughu that was filled with apples, raisins,u or nuts.u The

dough was then fried in oil. Dutch immigrantsu brought this

sweet snack to America hundreds of years ago.

The snack from the Netherlands was a round ball, so where

did the doughnut get its hole? There are lots of ideas about

that, but the most popular one involvesu a nineteenth-century

sailor3 who was named Hansen Gregory. He didn’t like that

the middle of the Dutch treat was usually raw.4 However, if he

left the dough in the oil to cook longer, the outside would burn.

To solve this problem, Gregory formed the dough into a ring so

it would cook all the way through more easily. Thus, the hole in

the doughnut was invented!5

Today, doughnuts come in all shapes and sizes. Traditional

doughnuts are usually covered in sugar or a fruit glaze.u There are also

filled doughnuts that hide a sweet surprise of jam or cream inside. In

addition, many doughnut shops have started dreaming up creative1

toppingsu such as fish flakes,u bacon,u and even bubble gum!u

Around the world, doughnuts take on different

flavors2 and even temperatures. For example,

Australia serves their jelly doughnuts warm. As

you bite into the soft dough, the hot jelly rushes3

out to fill your mouth with sweetness. In Finland,

you may find your doughnut stuffed with meat

and rice instead of jelly. The black pepper in

the meat will tickle4 your nose as you take one

hearty u bite after another. Before you know

it, you’ll be licking5 your fingers and

ordering one more.

Sweet and savory u choices for

doughnuts are sold all over the world.

They have given us even more reasons to

fall in love with this delightfulu treat. With so many

shapes and flavors of doughnuts on offer, you’d be

ON a rainy morning in September, I

hurried out of my hotel in Edinburgh, the

capital1 of Scotland. From the elegant castle

to one café in which the first Harry Potter

novels were written, I had so much to see.

My feet took me first to Edinburgh

Castle. It sits on Castle Rock high above

the city like a queen who is sitting on a

throne. u A guide filled my head with the

love and war stories of kings and queens

who had lived here. When I heard

the thunder2 of a huge gun, I thought for

a moment that the castle was once again

under attack. However, it was just the One

O’clock Gun,† which has been fired almost

every day since 1861.

A sense of history followed me down the

Royal Mile. This street leads from the castle

through Old Town. Charming3 shops and old

pubs line the street, and tiny lanes branch4

off it. As I looked into one dark alley,5 I

understood how it might have inspiredu the

DON’T be afraid to take chances when

you’re young,” says movie directorh

Wei Te-Sheng. “At worst, you fail. That is

nothing compared1 to being trapped2 in a

life of boredomh simply because you’re

afraid to pursue3 your interests.” It is this

boldness that has helped Wei create one

movie miracle4 after another.

Wei studied electrical engineering† in

school. He became interested in making

movies after he met a big movie fan during

military5 service. Wei worked odd jobs† for

two years before he finally found a director

to bring him into the business. Working his

way up,† he made a few short films that

won a lot of praise. Over time, he became

more and more certain that he would make

movies for a living.

In 1997, Wei became fascinatedh with

the Wushe Incident because of a news

report. He read up on the subject, wrote

the scripth for Seediq Bale（賽德克．巴萊）,

and later made a five-minute demoh with

NT$2 million. He hoped the demo would

attract investorsh to fund the film, but he

Wei was not frustrated1 by the lack of interest. In fact, he

became more determined.2 He changed direction and made

the lighter movie Cape No. 7（海角七號）. Wei was willing to

spend time and money to make his movie better than

average.3 His efforts were rewarded by huge box-officeh

returns. The fameh that grew from this movie finally drew

investors for Seediq Bale, the film that he dreamed of making.

It has taken Wei about fourteen years to turn the idea of

Seediq Bale into a movie ready for the theaters. Productionh

for it began in 2009 with a budgeth of about US$20 million.

If it makes money, says Wei, he will go on to an even bigger

film challenge:4 making a trilogyh about Taiwan.

“The more everyone says it’s impossible,” says Wei, “the

more eager I am to give it a shot.†” His passion5 for movies

drives him on. Above all, he accomplishes his goals through

sensible6 planning and creative problem solving. As he

overcomesh challenges to bring the world more stunningh

movies, Wei is writing history with his films.
