E-mail: [email protected] LRA attacks continue to be reported in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), South Sudan and Central African Republic (CAR). A total of 92 attacks associated with LRA activity in the three countries have been reported between June and August 2011. This represents an increase of 57 per cent since the last quarter in May when 40 attacks were reported. The threat of LRA attacks remains highest in DRC which reported 82 attacks, compared to CAR and South Sudan that recorded 6 and 4 attacks respectively, between June and August. The humanitarian impact of the attacks during this period remains worrisome. 35 deaths (32 of which were in DRC) and 66 abductions that included 18 children (16 of whom were in DRC), were recorded. Cumulatively, in 2011, there have been 240 attacks, resulting in 130 deaths and 327 abductions, including 113 children. The number of LRA-induced displacements remains high, with an estimated 440,000 civilians currently displaced or living as refugees in the affected areas. The vast majority (335,000) are displaced in the DRC, while the prelimiary results of an assessment in Western Equatoria indicate that the cumulative figure for LRA-induced IDPs in Western Equatoria, including persons displaced since 2008, is 70,000 people. Another 20,000 are internally displaced in CAR. In Uganda an estimated 78,000 IDPs previously displaced by LRA still remain in camps due to presence of landmines and land disputes in northern Uganda. 000 Number of IDPs LRA Attacks in Jun - Aug 2011 IDP sites Region affected by LRA in 2011 000 Number of Refugees LRA Attacks in Jan - May 2011 LRA Regional Update: DRC, CAR and South Sudan: June - August 2011 QUARTERLY SUMMARY Population Displacement 82 32 41 8 6 2 16 0 4 1 9 1 0 10 20 30 40 50 60 70 80 90 AƩacks Deaths AbducƟons Wounded Reported LRA incidents in DRC, CAR and South Sudan: June-August 2011 DRC CAR South Sudan DRC, 335,664 CAR, 19,152 South Sudan, 70,000 No. of LRA-Induced IDPS: Jan-August 2011 *Humanitarian assessment in May 2011 in Western Equatoria State found that an estimated 70,000 people remain displaced due to the LRA, some of whom have been displaced since 2008 **Uganda IDPs still in camps in northern Uganda - UNHCR's latest update as of July 2011.
