ТестВариант 1

Task 1. Translate the text.

«The Open Window»«My aunt will be down presently, Mr. Nuttel », said a very self-possessed young lady of fifteen; «in the meantime you must try and put up with me».Framton Nuttel endeavoured to say the correct something which should duly flatter the niece of the moment without unduly discounting the aunt that was to come. Privately he doubted more than ever whether these formal visits on a succession of total strangers would do much towards helping the nerve cure which he was supposed to be undergoing.«I know how it will be,» his sister had said when he was preparing to migrate to this rural retreat; «you will bury yourself down there and not speak to a living soul, and your nerves will be worse than ever from moping. I shall just give you letters of introduction to all the people I know there. Some of them, as far as I can remember, were quite nice.»Framton wondered whether Mrs. Sappleton, the lady to whom he was presenting one of the letters of introduction, came into the nice division.«Do you know many of the people round here»? asked the niece, when she judged that they had had sufficient silent communion.«Hardly a soul», said Framton. «My sister was staying here, at the rectory, you know, some four years ago, and she gave me letters of introduction to some of the people here.»He made the last statement in a tone of distinct regret.«Then you know practically nothing about my aunt»? pursued the self-possessed young lady.«Only her name and address», admitted the caller. He was wondering whether Mrs. Sappleton was in the married or widowed state. An undefinable something about the room seemed to suggest masculine habitation.Task 2. Task 1. Translate the text.«The Open Window»«Her great tragedy happened just three years ago,» said the child; «that would be since your sister’s time».«Her tragedy?», asked Framton; somehow in this restful country spot tragedies seemed out of place.«You may wonder why we keep that window wide open on an October afternoon,» said the niece, indicating a large French window that opened on to a lawn.«It is quite warm for the time of the year», said Framton; «but has that window got anything todo with the tragedy?»«Out through that window, three years ago to a day, her husband and her two young brothers went off for their day’s shooting. They never came back. In crossing the moor to their favourite snipe-shooting ground they were all three engulfed in a treacherous piece of bog. It had been that dreadful wet summer, you know, and places that were safe in other years gave way suddenly without warning. Their bodies were never recovered. That was the dreadful part of it».Here the child’s voice lost its self-possessed note and became falteringly human «Poor aunt always thinks that they will come back some day, they and the little brown spaniel that was lost with them, and walk in at that window just as they used to do. That is why the window is kept open every evening till it is quite dusk. Poor dear aunt, she has often told me how they went out, her husband with his white waterproof coat over his arm, and Ronnie, her youngest brother, singing ‘Bertie, why do you bound?’ as he always did to tease her, because she said it got on her nerves. Do you know, sometimes on still, quiet evenings like this, I almost get a creepy feeling that they will all walk in through that window — ».Task 2. Fill in the articles in the proverbs if necessary.1. … apple … day keeps … doctor away.2. … appetite comes with eating.3. … good beginning makes … good ending.4. … bird in … hand is worth two in … bush.5. Among … blind … one-eyed man is king.6. … brevity is … soul of wit.7. … cat has nine lives.8. … charity begins at … home.9. … clothes make … man.10. … curiosity killed … cat.Task 3. You have received a letter from your English-speaking pen-friend Ted who writes:... I'm going to join a youth science camp this summer. By the way, are there any summer you th camps in Russia? What kinds? Are they popular with kids? Why or why not? Have you everbeen to a summer camp and what's your attitude towards these camps. As for the latest news, my elder brother Tom has entered university ...Write a letter to TedIn your letter:— answer his questions;— ask 3 questions about his brother Ted. Write 100 — 140 words.Remember the rules of letter writing.

Вариант 3Task 1. Translate the text«The Open Window»She broke off with a little shudder. It was a relief to Framton when the aunt bustled into the room with a whirl of apologies for being late in making her appearance.«I hope Vera has been amusing you?», she said.«She has been very interesting», said Framton.«I hope you don’t mind the open window», said Mrs. Sappleton briskly; «my husband and brothers will be home directly from shooting, and they always come in this way. They’ve been out for snipe in the marshes to-day, so they’ll make a fine mess over my poor carpets. So like you men-folk, isn’t it?»She rattled on cheerfully about the shooting and the scarcity of birds, and the prospects for duck in the winter. To Framton it was all purely horrible. He made a desperate but only partially successful effort to turn the talk on to a less ghastly topic; he was conscious that his hostess was giving him only a fragment of her attention, and her eyes were constantly straying past him to the open window and the lawn beyond. It was certainly an unfortunate coincidence

that he should have paid his visit on this tragic anniversar y.«The doctors agree in ordering me complete rest, an absence of mental excitement, and avoidance of anything in the nature of violent physical exercise», announced Framton, who laboured under the tolerably wide-spread delusion that total strangers and chance acquaintances are hungry for the least detail of one’s ailments and infirmities, their cause and cure. «On the matter of diet they are not so much in agreement», he continued.«No?» said Mrs. Sappleton, in a voice which only replaced a yawn at the last moment. Then she suddenly brightened into alert attention — but not to what Framton was saying.«Here they are at last!» she cried. «Just in time for tea, and don’t they look as if they were muddy up to the eyes!»Task 2. Make the nouns in bold plural. Change sentences if necessary.1. A copy of the contract was sent to London.2. The last leaf fell from the tree.3. The woman standing by the window is our secretary.4. Do you agree that it is better to read a book before watching the film based on it? Why or why not? I've just come back from a trip to Wales...Write a letter to JaneIn your letter:— answer his questions;— ask 3 questions about her trip to Wales.Write 100 — 140 words.Remember the rules of letter writing.

Вариант 4Task 1. Translate the text.«The Open Window»Framton shivered slightly and turned towards the niece with a look intended to convey sympathetic comprehension. The child was staring out through the open window with dazed horror in her eyes. In a chill shock of nameless fear Framton swung round in his seat and looked in the same direction. In the deepening twilight three figures were walking across the lawn towards the window; they all carried guns under their arms, and one of them was additionally burdened with a white coat hung over his shoulders. A tired brown spaniel kept close at their heels. Noiselessly they neared the house, and then a hoarse young voice chanted out of the dusk: «I said, Bertie, why do you bound?»Framton grabbed wildly at his stick and hat; the hall-door, the gravel-drive, and the front gate were dimly-noted stages in his headlong retreat. A cyclist coming along the road had to run into the hedge to avoid an imminent collision.«Here we are, my dear,» said the bearer of the white mackintosh, coming in through the window; «fairly muddy, but most of it’s dry. Who was that who bolted out as we came up?»«A most extraordinary man, a Mr. Nuttel», said Mrs. Sappleton; «could only talk about his illnesses, and dashed off without a word of good-bye or apology when you arrived. One would think he had seen a ghost».«I expect it was the spaniel», said the niece calmly; «he told me he had a horror of dogs. He was once hunted into a cemetery somewhere on the banks of the Ganges by a pack of pariah dogs, and had to spend the night in a newly dug grave with the creatures snarling and grinning and foaming just above him. Enough to make anyone lose their nerve».Romance at short notice was her specialty.Task 2. Paraphrase the following sentences using the Possessive Case.1. The office of our manager is very big.2. They will consider the proposals of Mr. Black at their next meeting.3. This is, in the opinion of the critics, their best record for years.4. The computer of Tom and Helen is modern.5. Вариант 5 Task 1. Translate the text.A Piece of SoapNorman Gortsby was sitting on a bench hidden behind the bushes in Hyde Park. It was a warm May evening. The sun had already set and it was rather dark, but he could still make out the faces of the people who were walking past him and hear the sound of their voices. He was a philosopher, and liked sitting in the Park watching people whom he didn't know. While he was wondering who they were and where they were going, a young man came up to the bench, gave a quick look at him and threw himself down by his side. The newcomer was well-dressed and looked like a gentleman. His face was sad and he sighed deeply."You don't seem to be in a very good mood," said Norman. The young man was silent. He only looked at Norman again and there was an expression in his eyes that Norman didn't like."I really don't know how it all happened." he began at last, "but I've done the silliest thing that I've ever done in my life." He spoke in a low voice, almost in a whisper. "Yes" said Norman coldly. "I came to London this afternoon," the young man went on. "I had a meal at the hotel, sent a letter to my people, giving them the address and then went out to buy a piece of soap. They are supposed to give you soap at the hotel but it's always so bad that I decided to buy some for myself. I bought it, had a drink at a bar, and looked at the shops. When I wanted to go back to the hotel, I suddenly realized that I didn't remember its name or even what street it was in. Of course I can write to my people for the address, but they won't get my letter till tomorrow. The only shilling I had on me when I came out was spent on the soap and the drink and here I am with two pence in my pocket and nowhere to go for the night." There was a pause after he told the story. Task 2. Make the nouns in bold singular. Change sentences if necessary.1. These factories produce furniture.2. The wives of the sailors came to the shore.3. I have hurt my feet and hands.4. In the farmyard we could see oxen, sheep, cows and geese.5. Do your teeth still ache?6. These are my friends’ studies.7. He keeps his toys in the boxes.8. These ladies are those gentlemen’s wives.9. The children are sitting on the benches.Task 3. You have received a letter from your English-speaking pen-friend Mike who writes:... Next week we're presenting orally the results of our individual projects in science. My project is good, but I hate oral assessment in general and I\'m afraid I won't present my project well orally. Do you have projects? How often do your teachers ask you to make projects in different subjects? What do you prefer: written reports or oral presentations? ...Imagine my brother Dan will have no homework for the whole term! His class's been chosen for the experimental group by his school administration!!!Write a letter to Mike.In your letter:— answer his questions;— ask 3 questions about the Dan\'s reaction to the experimentWrite 100 — 140 words.Remember the rules of letter writing.

Вариант 6Task 1. Translate the text.A Piece of Soap"I'm afraid you don't believe me," he added."Why not?" said Norman. "I did the same thing once in a foreign capital. So I can understand you very well." "I'm glad you do," the young man said with a pleasant smile. "And now I must go. I hope by the time it gets quite dark I'll have found a man who'll believe me like you did, and will agree to lend me some money." "Of course," said Norman slowly. "The weak point of your story is that you can't produce the soap." The young man put his hand into his pocket and suddenly got up. "I've lost it," he said angrily. "It's too much to lose a hotel and a piece of soap on the same day," said Norman. But the young man did not hear him. He was running away."It was a good idea to ask him about the soap, and so simple," Norman thought as he rose to go. But at that moment he noticed a small packet lying by the side of the bench. It could be nothing but a piece of soap, and it had evidently fallen out of the young man's coat pocket when he threw himself down on the bench. Turning red, Norman picked it up. "I just can't allow him to go away like this," he thought, and started running after the young man. "Stop!" cried Norman when he saw him at the Park gate. The young man obeyed. Task 2. Вариант 8Task 1. Translate the text.A Future Businessman.Buttonwood Street, Philadelphia, where Frank Cowperwood spent the first ten years of his life, was a lovely place for a boy to live in. There were mainly red brick houses there with small marble steps leading up to the front doors. There were trees in the street — a lot of them. Behind each house there was a garden with trees and grass and sometimes flowers. The Cowperwoods, father and mother, were happy with their children. Henry Cowperwood, the father of the family, started life as a bank clerk, but when Frank, his elder son, was ten, Henry Cowperwood became a teller at the bank.As his position grew more responsible, his business connections increased. He already knew a number of rich businessmen who dealt with the bank where he worked. The brokers knew him as representing a well-known film and considered him to be a most reliable person.Young Cowperwood took an interest in his father's progress. He was quite often allowed to come to the bank on Saturdays, when he would watch with great interest the quick exchange of bills. He wanted to know where all the different kinds of money came from, and what the men did with all the money they received. His father, pleased at his interest, was glad to explain, so that even at this early age — from ten to fifteen — the boy gained a wide knowledge of the condition of the country financially. He was also interested in stocks and bonds, and he learned that some stocks and bonds were not even worth the paper they were written on, and others were worth much more than their face value showed.Task 2. Use the words in brackets to form sentences in Present Simple. Please note in what form the sentence should be (affirmative, interrogative or negative).1) They _____ football at the institute. Вариант 9Task 1. Translate the text.A Future Businessman. At home also he listened to considerable talk of business and financial adventure.Frank realized that his father was too honest, too careful. He often told himself that when he grew up, he was going to be a broker, or a financier, or a banker, and do some of the risky things he so often used to hear about.Just at this time there came to the Cowperwoods an uncle, Seneca Davis, who had not appeared in the life of the family before.Henry Cowperwood was pleased at the arrival of this rather rich relative, for before that Seneca Davis had not taken much notice of Henry Cowperwood and his family. This time, however, he showed much more interest in the Cowperwoods, particularly in Frank."How would you like to come down to Cuba and be a planter, my boy?" he asked him once."I am not so sure that I'd like to," replied the boy."Well, that's frank enough. What have you against it?""Nothing, except that I don't know anything about it.""What do you know?" The boy smiled, "Not very much, I guess.""Well, what are you interested in?""Money."He looked at Frank carefully now.
