Programme Objectives This is the first programme in Hong Kong designed to provide emergency nurses with the skills, knowledge and competency to offer advanced nursing care for patients in emergency departments. The course will build on the existing foundation experience of emergency nurses, and further develop their potential in independent advanced nursing practice in the emergency department. This will also provide a platform to share experience and expertise in order to enhance the continuing development within the role of an emergency nurse practitioner. Students will be given the opportunity to engage in a process of critical reflection on their practice and learning. This will allow them to sensibly challenge assumptions underlying clinical practice and will guide their personal development. Target Participants The main target students for this course are experienced emergency nurses who are keen to develop knowledge and skills and competency in preparation to work as independent emergency nurse practitioners.

Introduction

Programme Structure

The Postgraduate Diploma and Masters are part-time modular courses comprising two terms offered each year. Applicants may EITHER do the PgD in ONE year OR the Masters in TWO years.

The Postgraduate Diploma includes 24 units of core modules (each unit = 13 hours) and no elective modules. This may be completed in ONE year. The Masters is a continuation of the Postgraduate Diploma programme. It includes 37 units of Advanced Emergency Nursing Care – the same 24 units of core modules from the Postgraduate Diploma, and an additional 13 units. The Postgraduate Diploma may be completed in one year, whilst the Masters normally takes a minimum of two years.

Students from both programmes will undertake 156 hours of clinical attachment.

Classes for the Postgraduate Diploma and the first year of the Masters are conducted simultaneously, as the course content is the same. Classes will normally be held between 9am and 6pm on Monday at the Prince of Wales Hospital. Students will attend a total of 25 lectures. Please refer to our Unit website for any update in the arrangements and timetable of the lectures and clinical attachment.

Medium of Instruction

English will be used as the main language for instruction.

Mode of Delivery

A multidisciplinary approach, including lectures, classroom exercises, seminars, workshops, tutorials, fieldwork, and home study assignments, will be used.

AENP5001 Professional Development and Decision Making

3 39 C

This module aims to investigate through review of the literature and relevant research, the issues surrounding role expansion in relation to autonomous practice. It will encourage exploration of the socio-economic, professional, political ethical and legal influences on role development in Hong Kong, and explore the benefits of change management/service development models. It will also encourage students to apply theory to analyse decision-making processes used in their independent practice.

AENP5002 Acute Illness Management 4 52 C

This module aims to explore the physiology, pathophysiology and health promotion in relation to minor illness management. The module encourages the review of evidence and research allowing the student to scrutinize and challenge current management of minor illness in the acute and primary care setting.

Detailed Course Descriptions

#‘Minimum grade’ refers to the grade required to fulfill the programme requirement. All courses should be graded A – F, where C is the minimum required to pass the course

AENP5003 Acute Injury Management 4 52 C

The Acute Injury Management module aims to enable students to develop confidence and competence in aspects of clinical examination relating minor injury, and applying appropriate intervention. This is achieved through application of the anatomy and physiology to the clients’ presenting complaint, whilst considering the individuals’ psychosocial needs. A series of lectures, seminars and workshops encourage active student participation. Clinical examination skills will be enhanced through the consideration of theoretical principles.

AENP5004 Clinical Practice 12 156 C

This module, which runs over two terms, provides a focus on clinical practice to ensure that the students have opportunity to develop the new skills necessary to work as an ENP. There is no theoretical component to this module, but the student draws upon the knowledge gained in ENP5001, ENP5002 and ENP5003. In order to demonstrate achievement of the learning outcomes of the course, students are required to provide evidence of their competence in portfolio submitted at the end of term 2. The grade for this course will be assigned at the end of term 2. Throughout the course students will need to focus on how they are going to achieve their clinical competencies in their clinical work, through continually assessing and developing their own learning objectives depending on their individual needs. These will be negotiated and validated with a tutor. Achievement of these objectives over the course will be demonstrated through the compilation of their own portfolio. This portfolio of evidence provides the framework for the process and assessment of student ability to practice as an ENP. There are two essential parts to the course, which complement each other, educationally led practice and academic knowledge. This module pulls together these two components to enable students to develop and demonstrate competence.

AENP5005 Facilitating Learning 1 13 C

This single unit module provides the student with opportunity to build upon the knowledge and experience of supervision/mentorship by analyzing the teaching and learning methods used in the course. This will include a review of methods of facilitating learning the classroom and clinical setting. Students will learn the general principles of classroom and clinical teaching, and secondly will be trained to teach future students of this ENP Course. Thus, at the end of the course students should be compete to function as future teachers of the course.

Candidates will also be given advice on how and when to seek expert statistical advice. Emphasis will be placed on basic concepts throughout and will be tailored to the statistics required to allow the candidate to carry out their research project adequately. Testing will be by means of coursework.

AENP5008 MSc Project and Dissertation 9 117 C

The MSc Project will allow the candidate to demonstrate that they have achieved a complete understanding of research methodology and basic statistical analysis by undertaking a supervised research project on some aspect of advanced emergency nursing care (with input from the supervisor). The project should be of a standard worthy of publication in a peer-reviewed journal, and candidates will be encouraged to submit their work to a suitable journal on its completion. The dissertation should be around 20 000 words long and include a comprehensive literature review, rationale and explanation of the methodology used, clearly laid out results and a coherent discussion of the implications of the study with appropriate referencing.
