    ENGINE OIL LEVEL

Reading the level using the dipstick- Take out the dipstick;- Wipe the dipstick using a clean,

lint-free cloth.- push in the dipstick as far as it will

go.- Take out the dipstick again;- read the oil level again. It should

    never fall below minimum oil

level A nor exceed maximum oillevel B.

Topping up/filling with oilThe vehicle must be parked on levelground and the engine should becold (for instance, before the engineis started up for the first time in theday).

Contact your RENAULT Dealerat once if you notice an abnormalor repeated drop in any of thefluid levels.

    - Unscrew cap 1;- Top up the level (for information

purposes, the capacity betweenthe minimum and maximumreading on dipstick 2 isapproximately 2 litres).

    - Wait for approximately twominutes to allow the oil to flowinto the engine.

    - Check the level using the dipstick 2(as explained above).

Do not exceed the max level andremember to screw cap 1 back on.

Oil changeOil change frequency: refer to theservicing booklet for your vehicle.

Average capacities of oil change(for you information)2.0 16V engine: 5 litres

ELECTRONIC STABILITY PROGRAM: ESP WITH UNDERSTEER CONTROLThis system helps to keep control ofthe vehicle in critical drivingsituations (avoiding an obstacle, loss of grip when cornering, etc.)and works in conjunction with theundersteer control system.

This function is anadditional aid in case ofcritical driving conditionsto enable the vehicle

behaviour to be adapted to suitthe driving conditions.

However, the function does nottake the place of the driver. Itdoes not increase the vehicle'slimits and should not encourageyou to drive more quickly.

Thus, it can, under nocircumstances, replace thevigilance or responsibility of thedriver when manoeuvring the

vehicle (the driver must always be ready for sudden incidentswhich may occur when driving).

Operating principleA sensor in the steering wheeldetects the direction selected by thedriver.

Other sensors on the vehiclemeasure the actual direction.

The system compares the directionselected by the driver and the actualdirection of the vehicle and corrects

this as necessary by applying thebrakes selectively and/or acting onthe engine power.

When the function begins tooperate, warning light A flashes towarn you.

If the warning light comes onaccompanied by the ASRdeselected message when the

engine is started, slowly turn thesteering wheel from lock to lock toreinitialise the system.

Understeer controlThis system optimises the action ofthe ESP in the event of pronouncedundersteer (loss of front axle grip).

Operating faultsWhen the system detects anoperating fault the message"ESP/ASR fault" appears on theinstrument panel along with the

    warning light and warning

    light A.

ELECTRONIC STABILITY PROGRAM: ESP WITH UNDERSTEER CONTROL (continued)

Disabling the functionThe function is deactivated bypressing switch 1; indicator light Awill come on to confirm this. Thisaction also deactivates the tractioncontrol mechanism: the messageASR deselected appears on theinstrument panel. Refer to theAutomatic gearbox informationin Section 2.

As the ESP offers additional safety,it is recommended that you do notdrive with the function disabled.Correct this by pressing switch 1again.

ESP is automatically reactivatedwhen the ignition is switched onand, when driving, when the

vehicle is travelling in excess ofapproximately 30 mph (50 km/h),depending on the vehicle.

TRACTION CONTROL: ASRThis system helps to limit skiddingon drive wheels and to control thevehicle when pulling away oraccelerating.

This function is anadditional aid in theevent of critical drivingconditions, enabling the

vehicle behaviour to be adaptedto suit the driving conditions.

However, the function does nottake the place of the driver. Itdoes not increase the vehicle'slimits and should not encourageyou to drive more quickly.

Thus, it can, under nocircumstances, replace thevigilance or responsibility of thedriver when manoeuvring thevehicle (the driver must always

be ready for sudden incidentswhich may occur when driving).

Operating principleUsing the wheel sensors, the systemmeasures and compares the speedof the drive wheels at all times andslows down their over-rotation.

If a wheel is starting to spin, thesystem brakes automatically untilthe drive supplied becomescompatible with the level of grip.

The system also adjusts the enginespeed to the grip available under thewheels, independently of thepressure exerted on the acceleratorpedal.

    When the function begins to

operate, warning light A flashes towarn you.

    TRACTION CONTROL: ASR (continued)

Disabling the functionIn some situations (driving on verywet ground: snow, mud, etc. ordriving with chained wheels), thesystem may reduce the engineoutput to limit wheelspin. If this isnot required, it is possible todeactivate the function by pressingswitch 1.

The message ASR deselectedappears accompanied by warninglight A on the instrument panel toinform you.

Disabling the function also disablesthe ESP function.

Correct this as soon as possible bypressing switch 1 again.

ESP is automatically reactivatedwhen the ignition is switched onand, when driving, when thevehicle is travelling in excess of

approximately 30 mph (50 km/h),depending on the vehicle.

BRAKE ASSISTOn vehicles which have emergency brake assist fitted, this system iscomplementary to ABS and helpsreduce vehicle stopping distances.

Operating principleThe system detects an emergency braking situation. In this case, the braking assistance immediatelydevelops maximum power and maytrigger ABS regulation.

ABS braking is maintained as longas the brake pedal is not released.

Hazard warning lights comingonDepending on the vehicle, thesemay light up in the event of suddendeceleration.

This function is anadditional aid in case ofcritical driving conditionsto enable the vehicle

behaviour to be adapted to suit thedriving conditions.

However, the function does nottake the place of the driver. It doesnot increase the vehicle's limitsand should not encourage you todrive more quickly.

    PUNCTURE / EMERGENCY SPARE WHEEL

In the event of a puncture, depending on the vehicle, you willhave:- tyre repair aerosols;- an emergency spare wheel.

Emergency spare wheel(depending on vehicle)This is located in the luggagecompartment.

    To access the emergency sparewheel:

    - open the luggage compartment lid;- lift carpet 1 and 2;- unscrew the central mounting;- remove the emergency spare

    wheel.

    Vehicles fitted with an

emergency spare wheelsmaller than the fourother wheels.

The driving speed must notexceed 80 mph (130 km/h)during the temporary use of theemergency spare wheel.

Special noteThe Tyre Pressure Monitor functiondoes not check the emergency sparewheel (the wheel replaced by thespare wheel disappears from theinstrument panel display).

Refer to the information on the tyrepressure monitor in section 2 of themain driver's handbook.

If the spare wheel has been stored for severalyears, have it checked byyour Dealer to ensure

that it is still safe to use.

    TYRE REPAIR AEROSOLS

Tyre repair aerosols(depending on vehicle)In the event of a puncture, carry outan emergency repair using theaerosols located under the luggagecompartment carpet:

remove the object that has causedthe puncture; turn the wheel so that the valve is

at the top; if the aerosol is cold, rub it

    between your hands to warm itup;

attach the aerosol to the tyreinflation valve, with the aerosolupside down, and keep pressing

the button until the tyre isinflated. You will need twoaerosols to complete the repair.

Because the valves arespecially designed, useonly aerosols approvedby RENAULT's TechnicalDepartment.

drive the vehicle for approximately12 miles (20 kilometres) at amaximum speed of 28 mph(45 km/h), and then check the tyrepressure.

    Note:

During this period of driving, thetyre pressure monitor may display apressure fault.

This is a temporaryrepairGo to a specialist as soonas possible to have the

    tyre inspected, repaired oreplaced.

After a tyre inflation repaircontact your RENAULTDealer to replace your tyrerepair aerosols.

PrecautionsKeep the pressurisedcontainer out of sunlight.

Do not expose to tempera-tures above 50C.

Do not pierce or burn after use.Do not spray towards a flame or anincandescent object.

The puncture repairaerosol should not be usedfor punctures in the tyresidewall.

    TYRES

Tyre safety - road wheelsThe tyres are the only contactbetween the vehicle and the road, soit is essential to keep them in goodcondition.

You must make sure that your tyres

    conform to local road regulations.

When they need to bereplaced, only tyres ofthe same make, size, typeand profile should be

    used.

Tyres fitted to the vehicle shouldeither be identical to those fittedoriginally or conform to thoserecommended by your RENAULTDealer.

Maintaining the tyresThe tyres must be in good conditionand the tread form must havesufficient depth; tyres approved byRENAULT's Technical Departmenthave wear warning strips 1 whichare risers moulded into the tread atseveral points.

When the tread has worn down tothe level of these warning risers, they become visible 2: the tyresconcerned must be replaced now asonly 1.6 mm maximum of treadremains and this is not sufficient tomaintain a good grip on wet roads.

An overloaded vehicle, longjourneys by motorway, particularlyin very hot weather, or continualdriving on poorly surfaced minorroads will lead to more rapid tyrewear and affect safety.

Incidents which occurwhen driving, such asstriking the kerb, maydamage the tyres and

wheel rims, and could also lead tomisalignment of the front or rearaxle geometry. If such incidentsoccur, have the condition of theseparts checked by a RENAULTDealer.

    TYRES (continued)

Tyre pressuresRecommended tyre pressures mustbe adhered to. (Remember to checkthe emergency spare wheel at thesame time.) Pressures must bechecked at least once a month andalways before a long journey. (Referto the section on Tyre pressures.)

    Incorrect tyre pressures

lead to abnormal tyrewear and unusually hotrunning, factors which

may seriously affect safety andlead to:- poor road holding,- the risk of blowouts or of

throwing a tread at high speed.

The pressure depends on theload and the speed of use. Adjustthe pressures according to theconditions of use (refer to Tyrepressures).

Pressures should be checked whenthe tyres are cold; ignore higherpressures which may be reached inwarm weather or following a fastjourney.

If tyre pressures cannot be checkedwhen the tyres are cold, increase theindicated pressures by 0.2 to 0.3bar(or 3 psi).

    Never deflate a hot tyre.

Note: a label (depending on countryor model) fixed to the edge or frameof the driver's door gives therecommended tyre pressures.

Swapping the wheels aroundThis practice is not recommended.

Vehicle fitted with TyrePressure MonitorEach of the sensorsincorporated in valves is

dedicated to a specific wheel:under no circumstances shouldyou swap the wheels. There is a risk of incorrectinformation which could haveserious consequences.

    Fitting new tyres

For safety reasons, thisoperation must becarried out by a

specialist.Fitting different tyres maychange your vehicle as follows:- It may mean that your vehicle

    no longer conforms to currentregulations.

    - It may change the way ithandles when cornering.

    - It may cause the steering to beheavy.

    - It may cause tyre noise.- It may affect the use of snow

    chains.
