    Network

A network consists of two or more computers

that are linked in order to share resources (such

as printers and CD-ROMs), exchange files, or

    allow electronic communications.

The computers on a network may be linked

through cables, telephone lines, radio waves,

    satellites, or infrared light beams.

    Network

Network are usually classified as aLAN, MAN and WAN.

    The main differentiation among

these classification is their area ofcoverage.

    The differentiation among the

network scheme is involve theorientation and the distance.

LANLAN- local area network is a network

    Developed in 1970s.

connects computers and devices in alimited geographical area such as ahome, school computer laboratory, office building or closely positioned

    group of buildings.

    LAN

Each computer or device on thenetwork called a node, often sharesresources such as printers, large hard

disk and programs. It have server file which containsprogramming and data which will usedby message. It also contains all

software which control themanagement of network system.

    LAN

WLAN- a wireless LAN that uses nophysical wires. Computers anddevices that access a wireless LAN

must have built-in wireless capabilityor the appropriate wireless networkcard, PC Card or Flash Card.

A wireless LAN communicates with a

wired LAN for access to its resources, such as software, hardware and theInternet.

    MAN

    MAN-Metropolitan area network

    Developed in 1980s.

Is a high-speed network thatconnects local area networks(LAN) in metropolitan area such as

a city or town and handles the bulkof communications activity acrossthat region.

MANA MAN typically includes one ormore LANs but covers a smaller

geographic area than a WAN.Generally covers towns and cities(50 kms)

    MAN

MAN usually is managed by a consortiumof users or by a single network providerthat sells the service to the user.

    It used telephone companies, cable

television operators and otherorganizations provides users withconnections to the MAN.

It have server to access a terminal tocommunicate with other computers.

    WAN

A WAN is more complicated and complex. Itsrequired for many hardware and software toallow local network and Metropolitan networkcommunicated.

communication circuits connected by routers.Routers forwards packets from one to anotherfollowing a route from the sender to thereceiver.

Store-and-Forward Hosts are typically connected(or close to) the routers

    WAN

It using a communications channel thatcombines many types of media such astelephone lines, cables, and radiowaves.

A WAN can be one large network or canconsist of two or more LANs connectedtogether.

The internet is the worlds largest WAN

WANThe basic WAN service usually offers (formany years) is a Leased Line. A LeasedLine is a point-to-point connection betweentwo places, implemented by differenttransmission media, which creates one link

between its nodes. An organization whose networks are basedon such lines has to connect each officewith one line, meaning that each office is

connected to as many lines as the numberof offices it is connected to, as shown inthe figure below.
