A closer look to a Beam

Each Single Beam is fed via KA-SAT with ~250 MHz of Bandwidth (called also “FWD” Capacity)

Terminals within a Beam have available ~250 MHz of “RTN” Capacity for transmitting back to KA-SAT

There are 82 Beams from KA-SAT. As each one is fed with ~250 MHz of bandwidth, it comes that KA-SAT Satellite must be fed with 82 x 250 MHz ~ 20 GHz (!)

29,5 – 30 GHz ~250 MHz

How is it possible to Feed KA-SAT with 20 GHz

of Info?

• It is possible only reusing more than one time the same Slot of Frequency (example: 10 times

the same slot of 2 GHz)

News Gathering via Satellite

and the IP Revolution:

why is KA-SAT so innovative for SNG?

Page 18: NewsSpotter SNG via KA-SAT Commercial Presentation

www.skylogic.com Page - 18

OU Data Gathering: Ka Advantages

• 1st Consideration: EFP (Electronic Field Production) equipment are becoming cheaper and

cheaper (they have become already, actually…)

~35-80 k€ ~3-8 k€

Page 19: NewsSpotter SNG via KA-SAT Commercial Presentation

www.skylogic.com Page - 19

OU Data Gathering: Ka Advantages

• 2nd Consideration: The EFP/ENG WorkFlow has moved from Tape to Memory-Card with -

again - significant reductions in cost and a seamless integration into IP networks

Page 20: NewsSpotter SNG via KA-SAT Commercial Presentation

www.skylogic.com Page - 20

OU Data Gathering: Ka Advantages

• Result: EFP production requires today a very limited investment and is seamlessly integrated

into IP Networks; EFP systems can today be deployed in large volumes by Broadcasters due to

their improved affordability

+ + =

Light +

Cheap + IP

• So, Broadcasters are looking for Cheap and Light systems, providing IP

connectivity, as an ideal complement of today’s EFP System for News Gathering

Page 59: NewsSpotter SNG via KA-SAT Commercial Presentation

www.skylogic.com Page - 60

Booking

• The Service is fully operated by Skylogic, the

Italian Subsdiary of Eutelsat based in Turin

• Skylogic NOC also provides Support in case of

Troubleshooting

Page 60: NewsSpotter SNG via KA-SAT Commercial Presentation

www.skylogic.com Page - 61

Booking

• Web-based Self-Booking

– Each Customer is provided with access to a Service

Webportal (OSS)

– The portal provides informations on all terminals

belonging to the Customer

• Alive, Off, Configuration, Rate, Beam etc...

Page 61: NewsSpotter SNG via KA-SAT Commercial Presentation

www.skylogic.com Page - 62

Booking

• Booking is done on the web via the Skylogic OSS Portal

– The Customer specifies

• The User Terminal he uses (each UT is uniquely identified by its MAC

Address)

• The location from where he will be doing the Contribution (used to determine

the Beam)

– NOTE: NewsSpotter Terminals are not limited to work from a single

Beam, they can work from ALL of the Beams (“Beamless”

Configuration)

• The Timeslot of the Contribution

• The Bitrate he requires on the RTN and on the FWD link

• If the Terminal is not Booked, it will still get connectivity and will be forwarded to the

OSS Booking page

– This allows the SNG to go on site in case of Breaking News, deploy the antenna,

and perform an “immediate” booking

Commercial Model

• We are not selling MHz, we are selling GBytes

– The Customer pays the transferred Volume instead of the Frequency slot

used

• Example

– 1 hour of transfer @ 4Mbps = 1.8 GBytes

Volume transferred in 1 hour

Transfer bit-rate Volume transferred

1 Mbps 0.45 GB

2 Mbps 0.9 GB

4 Mbps 1.8 GB

8 Mbps 3.6 GB

12 Mbps 5.4 GB

Time to transfer 1 GB

Transfer bit-rate Time to transfer

1 Mbps 2h13

2 Mbps 1h07

4 Mbps 33 min

8 Mbps 17 min

12 Mbps 11 min

Page 66: NewsSpotter SNG via KA-SAT Commercial Presentation

www.skylogic.com Page - 67

Commercial Model

• The Service can be marketed in 2 main modes

– Occasional Use Committed via Booking

– Permanently Reserved CIR per Beam (IP

Connect)

Page 67: NewsSpotter SNG via KA-SAT Commercial Presentation

www.skylogic.com Page - 68

1 - Commercial Model - Occasional Use via

Booking

• The Customer purchases Volume, and he uses it “little by little” when doing contribution with its fleet of terminals

– It’s like filling a tank with gasoline

– The faster the car, the higher the Gasoline consumption (the higher the transmission rate, the higher the volume consumed)

• Increased flexibility

– A terminal can work at different speed on different dates

– The individual Terminal does not have any FAP

• The model foresee monthly “Traffic Plans”

– Monthly plan specifies a monthly volume

– The higher the Volume engagement of the Plan, the lower the price

– The sum of the volume used during the month by Customer Fleet will be accounted and billed out of the Monthly Plan

Page 68: NewsSpotter SNG via KA-SAT Commercial Presentation

www.skylogic.com Page - 72

• Permanently Reserved CIR per Beam (IP Connect)

– Throughput is permanently (24/24 and 365/365)

reserved for Customer’s use

– on a Beam per Beam basis

– Available to the entire Population of Terminals of the

Customer

– DOES NOT require booking, but the Customer must

take care that his population is not overloading the

available throughput

2 - Commercial Model - Permanent Reserved CIR

– Price is per Mbit per Beam per month (minimum initial

engagement: 12 months, then monthly extension)

Page 69: NewsSpotter SNG via KA-SAT Commercial Presentation

www.skylogic.com Page - 73

2 - Commercial Model - Permanent Reserved CIR

• Permanently Reserved CIR per Beam (IP Connect)

– Example: An Italian broadcaster purchases

• 20 Mbit from the Spot covering Rome

• 14 Mbit from the Spot covering Milan

20 Mbit =

• 2 Terminals @ 10 Mbit each or

• 4 Terminals @ 5 Mbit each or

• …any combination not overspilling 20 Mbit
