Fourth - Love We Lost, Courage overcoming hardships

Karlsruhe National Theater has performed the essence of German music with works including Weber and Wag-ner. The Magic Flute (Die Zauberflöte) composed by Mozart, is his last great opus. Singspiel, a German folk drama in two acts, can be interpreted in various ways depending on how it is directed. This year, The Magic Flute will be performed in exactly the same way as it is being formed in Germany. This a rare treat, as usually the opera is modified for Korean audiences. This allows for subtle nuances to be revealed throughout the perfor-mance. Don't miss this exciting and entertaining opera.

Yeongnam Opera celebrates their 30th anniversary by joining this year's festival with The Merry Wives of Windsor (Die Iustigen Weiber von Windsor), Based on the original drama of Shakespeare, this opera is a clas-sic representation of Otto Nicolai, a well-known found-ing member of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra. The story is about the Earl Falstaff sending love letters to married women in a town. It is not widely known in Ko-rea, but has gained great love in Europe by displaying Shakespeare's wit and humor along with the romantic music of Nicolai and heritage of German opera. Based on the first performance in Korea in 1998, it also made the audiences yearn for another performance in 2010 DIOF. At that festival, Yeongnam Opera was awarded for their robust direction and plot design.

Korean Faust’ in trouble between perfect love and flawless jewel

Pioneering piece of Korean chamber opera consisted of tight plot!

The DIOF has introduced various opera performances including salon operas and classic operas and now presents a Korean creative musical Jewel and a Lady. This work was written by Lee Kangbaek in 1975, and garnered rave reviews by audiences and critics. The performance was reproduced into an one-act opera for little theaters by composer Park Yeonggeun, in 1991.

Page 20: October 2014 Daegu Compass

The conflict is centered on a man, his rejuvenation and a promise. The work is called 'Korean Faust' owing to the deep reflection of love and death. It is an opera for little theaters and is to be performed in front of small audiences, so they can experience the characters' de-velopment up-close and personal.

SYNOPSISAn old man, who devoted his lifetime to make the best jewel, finally completes the 'absolute jewel'. One day, a mysterious man visits the old jeweler. He suggests the terms that the old man would be restored to youth but should not touch any jewels thereafter, and warns that if he breaks the promise, he would be reduced to ashes. The old man accepts the conditions and falls in sincere love with a beautiful lady, and he is in a state of ambiv-alence about presenting her a perfect ring. In the end, he breaks the contract to complete a ring for her and disappears as a handful of ashes.

The work overcame severe criticism at the premiere showing and has become popular due to its catchy musical overtures and rhythmic textures. This performance features the song ‘Je Crois Entendre Encore’ and weaves in the beauty of Bizet's major work, Carmen.

SYNOPSISZurga is the leader of Ceylon Island making a living by fishing for pearls. He meets a long-lost friend Nadir while waiting for a priestess to insure the island against a rainstorm. They sing together, thinking of the past where they had been in love with the same woman, but finally chose each others' friendship. The priestess, Leïla, and the high priest of Brahma, Nourabad arrive on the island. Leïla sees Nadir, whom she loved before, and gets aroused once again. Nadir in a fit of passion forgets the pledge of friendship with Zurga. She decides not to break her duties as a priestess, but eventually en-joys a secret love affair with Nadir, forgetting the vow of celibacy. Nourabad becomes aware of it and arrests them. Zurga also feels a sense of betrayal and jealou-sy and tries to punish them. However, in the end, he sets them free and is executed for them because of the friendship with Nadir and the love for Leïla.

an opera! Every Saturday, the intensive opera class will be held for free. It gets fairly high ratings owing to lec-tures of the greatest classic specialists in the country and arias of outstanding vocalists. This year marks the 450th birth of William Shakespeare, the writer of the world's greatest literature collections who has inspired numerous composers and talents. This class will focus on his works expanded into the related genre including opera.

10. 4 Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream by Cho Yunbeom

Benjamin Britten is an English composer of modern music. He has been composing with his own inventive music style by using diverse mediums of contemporary music.. He is especially interested in music for young people. As a result, the Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra was created. Benjamin Britten succeeded to make A Midsummer Night's Dream into a magnificent opera full of wonderful melodies while staying true to the original work of Shakespeare.

10. 11 All about Romeo and Juliet - original play, film, opera and ballet by Lee Yongsuk

Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet is one of the most fa-mous stories retold through countless mediums. During class, there will be a viewing of Gounod and Bellini's opera, Prokofiev's ballet, other masterpieces and films. The class will also focus on the spirit of the times and core themes the artists want to tell.

10. 18 Verdi's the Complex of Shakespeare, Macbeth and Othello by Hong Seungchan

Shakespeare is an ineluctable destiny for the people who make drama part of their life. Verdi is no exception. He felt completely lost on Macbeth, and overcome by Oth-ello, but eventually, found enlightenment through Falstaff. By studying Shakespeare's influence on Verdi's opera, students will have a greater understanding of character development throughout Verdi's performances.

10. 25 Dissection of the Shakespeare's women: Wives' Overturning by Kim Mijung

One of characters from Shakespeare's Falstaff stirs mul-tiple feelings inside of us because we vilify this lecher, but we are envious of his optimism. There are wise wives who fulfill their obligation in Shakespeare's mas-terpiece, The Merry Wives of Windsor. It presents the question, "Is it possible to enjoy the pleasure of multiple people without repercussion?"

Saving our Water Written by Brian Van Hise / Photos by EXCOWater Expo Korea 2014

From producing electricity to raising vegetables, making products to quenching your thirst - what do you need the most? Yes, you need water. Water has become more important than ever in our modern society. Not only is it essential for human survival, but it is also used in many other ways. The water industry has grown rap-idly with the increase of earth's population and rapid change in climate. Water can decide a country’s desti-ny. What is the smartest way to use water? The answer is here, at the Water Expo Korea 2014.

The Water Expo Korea 2014 will be held at EXCO from Oct. 22nd to 24th. It is organized by Korea Water Forum and EXCO, and hosted by Daegu Metropolitan City, and Gyeongsangbuk-Do. The expo will promote the water industry as a future growth industry of Korea, boost the international standing of Water City Daegu and estab-lish global networks among water industry experts. It

is expected to be a platform for global companies to expand into the Korean market and industrial networking in Korea.

At the expo, Doosan Heavy Industry, GS Engineering & Construction, Kolon, CSM, Cheil, Toray, Econity, the Korea Water Resources Corporation, Royal Precision Synopex will attend as Korean major water companies. Veolia Water (France), Trojan (Canada) and Huonghai (Vietnam) will confirm their participation as well.

The expo has four sections, Water Supply & Sewage, Water Reuse, Water Resource and Water Treatment. The Water Supply & Sewage section, you’ll learn the whole journey of water and how it comes to your place and where it goes after it is used, through water supply service, water supply and sewage plant, environmental design and pipes. In order to save water, water reuse

Page 27: October 2014 Daegu Compass

became a hot issue. Go to the Water Reuse sec-tion and check out the new drinking water devices, wastewater reuse systems & equipment, measuring instruments and more. Aren’t you curious about how sea water could be turned into drinkable water? Water Resource section will show you seawater de-salination plant and other alternative water resourc-es. Lastly, if you want to figure out what to do with wastewater, visit Water Treatment section and learn about wastewater treatment, water purification and sewage treatment systems.

Concurrently, IWA Regional Conference on Water Reuse & Energy (Oct. 21~24), KSCE 2014 Con-vention – CIVELIL EXPO & CONFERENCE (Oct. 22~24) and 23th Water Management Symposium will be held together at EXCO. Furthermore, Daegu is the host of the 7th World Water Forum in 2015, the largest international water event with over 30,000 participants from 190 countries

The Water Expo Korea 2014 will provide an oppor-tunity to know what and how the water industry op-erates and functions. Observe the future of water at the expo.

EXCO Baby Fair

Are you in any way, shape or form involved with tykes, toddlers, or terrible twos? Is your life filled with one-sies, diapers, rattles, tummy time, or toys? Clear the play area, prepare the diaper bags, because there’s a new expo in town. The Daegu Baby and Kids Fair will be held from Thursday, November 6 to Sunday, November 9th at EXCO. Hosted by Daegu Metropolitan City and organized by EXCO, the expo will feature 650 booths from 270 companies specializing in the entertainment, education, and rearing of babies and young children. Organizers are expecting upwards of 50,000 parents, soon-to-be parents, educators, and their children to be in attendance.

The exhibition, a sort of grand festival for parents new and old to learn about and compare childcare products and information, is categorized into two sections. The first, Pregnancy and Baby Supplies for pre-parents and

mothers, includes booths for pregnancy supplies, preg-nancy services, kid’s food, kid’s safety supplies, and female products. The second, Childhood Education Supplies for kindergarten teachers and nursery facili-ty, includes exhibits and booths for studying materials & supplies, educational institutes, support institute supplies, playing facilities, kindergarten supplies, edu-cational toys, stationery, English education, electronic devices, and furniture.

As with most expos of this magnitude, all the major and relevant companies have come out to play. Compa-nies participating in the Pregnancy and Baby Supplies section include Maeil Dairies, RYAN, Inglesina, Queens Baby Studio, BoryungBiophama, Green Cross, and Alzip Mat. Similarly, the Childhood Education Supplies section will include Gymboree, Orda Korea, English Egg, Daegyo, Blue Rabbit, Korea Child Academy and Aram.

Page 29: October 2014 Daegu Compass

29

If you’re less interested in buying and more interest-ed in learning, the expo will feature several seminars on bringing up babies and children. Learn the latest trends and developments on childcare. Topics will in-clude “Gentle Birth: The Most Comfortable and Hap-piest Birth”, “How to Take Care During Pregnancy”, “Psychology Development of Children and the Role of Parents” and more.

There will also be a variety of fun events to enjoy with your tot in tow. You can participate in an auction tosupport single moms, a milk-drinking race, a mas-sage instructional session, a puppet show,a baby walker race, and more. It’s reasonable to believe that the baby walker race will maybe not include the baby, although the milk-drinking race could be fun as a team sport.

Thanks to the persistent efforts of the Korean gov-ernment to encourage families to have more chil-dren, the nation’s exceedingly low birth rate has reversed course and increased two years in a row. Parents like to spend generously on their children, making expos like the Baby and Kids Fair important for parents who want to spend wisely. To make sure the information, resources, and products of the expo are available to parents or expectant couples year-round, the expo is held twice annually.

The expo will, of course, cater to its primary audi-ence by providing strollers, medical rooms, a child lost and found, and free shuttle buses. To accom-modate the growth of the event, the breast-feeding room and cafeteria will be expanded compared to the previous expo.

Admission is 5,000 won, however if you pre-reg-ister on www.babyfair.or.kr by 6pm November 5th, admission is free. The hours are 10:00-18:00 every day. Contact 053-601-5374 for additional informa-tion.

Don’t be a baby; come visit the Daegu Baby and Kids Fair and learn something for the kid you love.

Medi Tour Success Paves the Way for Expansion

Written by Matthew CaraccioloPhotos by Daegu Medical Tourism

As hype about Daegu’s medical tourism proliferates, Daegu Medi Tour has sought to ensure its hard-earned attention isn’t lost on stagnant programs. Unwilling to rest on the laurels of its original tours, the organization has expanded with two additional medi tours that will continue to provide exceptional service and unique ex-periences, both medical and cultural.

The first of these new programs is the Hyo Medi Tour. Designed with international students in mind, the Hyo Medi Tour allows parents of Chinese students studying in Korea to come to the country for a comprehensive medical check as well as a splash of cultural inundation. In a city handicapped by its inland setting and distance from the more cosmopolitan and famous Seoul area, the Hyo Medi Tour is an ingenious method of luring for-eign travelers by utilizing the local international student population, of which over 60% is Chinese. After a cau-tious start, the word is being spread and participants are choosing a wider range of procedures.

“At first, participants usually chose basic medical treat-ments such as medical check-ups,” said Baek Mi-Ran,

manager of the Hyo Medi Tour program. “But now, the program has settled in and we have the customers’ trust. Now they ask for more treatments in dermatology or simple plastic surgery.”

The entire tour is supported by Daegu City with trans-portation, interpreters, and souvenirs. Parents sign up for the system online and send the required visa documents. After immigration approves the visa, the applicants send the participation fee and choose the desired medical program. They fly into Daegu and start the 4 day tour, which includes a greeting ceremony, health check-up, some sightseeing, and a traditional culture experience. The parents return home well-rest-ed, healthy, and with a deeper understanding of Korean culture.

Since 2012, over 450 people have participated in the program, some to life-saving effects.“Last August, a Chinese student in Daejeon invited her parents-in-law to the program,” mentioned Baek. “They were afraid of receiving medical attention in another country so they simply chose the basic health check-up

and colonoscopy. During the procedure, both in-laws found out they had polyps. They underwent surgery to remove them.” The couple then decided to complete a more thorough health examination at the recommen-dation of the tour and then returned all the healthier to China.

The Hyo Medi Tour has been a great success in Daegu and has served as an example for peer cities to follow.

Brand new to the scene will be the Suseong Healing Tour, the second new tour added to the plethora of op-tions offered by Daegu Medi Tour. Designed to relieve stress, the main goal of the Suseong Healing Tour is for foreigners to get away from the daily grind with some relaxing treatments, helpful medical check-ups, and cultural excursions. In the meantime, the tour promotes local medical services while introducing Korean culture to foreign visitors.

The first day’s focus is the health check-up, which in-cludes aspects of dermatology, Korean traditional med-icine, ophthalmology, dentistry, and internal medicine. After a healthy Korean lunch, the party moves to the Puren Tea Culture Center and culminates with a temple stay at Dongwhasa on Palgongsan. The second day’s itinerary is a bit less active. Partic-ipants take the cable car to Palgongsan to enjoy the breathtaking scenery. The tour stops at the Daegu Bangjja Yugi Museum, a robust collection of Korean tra-ditional brassware, before heading back toward the city and the end of the tour.

All told, the tour runs for 250,000won a person with a minimum of four participants per tour. The introduction of new tours throughout the city is a testament to the hard work of Daegu’s promoters and Medi Tour’s quality services. With each success comes the challenge to offer a wider range of quality services

to a wider range of visitors. Hyo Medi Tour and Suseong Healing Tour, along with the rest of Daegu Medi Tour’s offerings, are examples of the careful consideration the organization takes to form meaningful and helpful expe-riences, and should be on the list for any visitor looking for health, relaxation, and a taste of traditional Korea.

34 DAEGU COMPASS 2014.OCTOBER http://daegucompass.comDaegu Foodie - Percent % Craft Beer Pub

Percent % Craft Beer Pub

Written by Katy Babiarz / Photographed by Ivan Broida

No Ordinary Korean Draft Beer Here!

Percent is one of the newest pubs in the ever chang-ing Daebong-dong (대봉동) neighborhood. With 7 craft beers on tap, a variety of delicious pub foods, excellent music to match the beers, and a fun English speaking owner, it’s going to be one of my new favorite hot spots after a long day at work, and I’m sure it will be yours too!Friday and Saturday are their busiest night with plenty of foreigners and Koreans both enjoying their delectablebeers.

Percent gets its draft beers from Korean breweries in Busan and Seoul. Galmegi Brewing Co, Ka-Brew, The Booth and Reily’s Tap House have proven to be big hits with the foreigners, as well as Koreans. After visiting a pub in Itaewon a year ago, owner Tae Young Sung fell in love with Pale Ales. Now, he wants to share his love of Pale Ales with the rest of Korea by opening up a place

that sells them, and all for an excellent price! If you’re looking for Hite, Max, Cass, or any of those other types of beers, you won’t find them here. Instead, you’ll find beers full of flavor with a stronger ABV (Alco-hol by Volume) and rich colors. Hence the pub’s name Percent.

Percent’s draft beers change seasonally, so if you hav-en’t gone since they opened back in June, stop by again and taste the newest beers available this month! With the cooler weather approaching, it’s time for the darker, warmer beers to hit the taps.

Food:-The Percent Fries are a great value! They come served with a good portion of sweet bulgogi, spicy jalapenos, and onions, with a sweet sour cream sauce and a tangy

BBQ sauce drizzled over top. It’s the perfect balance between sweet and spicy.-The Curry Ketchup with Sausages is a pleasant surprise to my taste buds. Young Sung’s brother, who lives in Germany, came up with this pairing and told his older brother he had to have it at his pub. So, here it is, and it’s a hit! The sweet curry ketchup is the perfect complement to the two juicy sausages.-The Chicken Sandwich is the big hit here at Percent among foreigners and Koreans! I see exactly why! It’s a towering stack of breaded chicken, tomato, onions, cheese, sauces, and lettuce between a bun. It without a doubt requires a fork and knife to eat. And if that isn’t enough already, they serve it with a huge side of fries! -Chicken Drumstick BBQ is not exactly as it seems, because there are no drumstick bones. But, the fla-vors of this tender dark meat and a sauce full of sea-sonings makes it definitely one of the healthiest and most delicious pub foods I’ve ever eaten. It comes with a heaping portion of roasted veggies, such as onions, mushrooms, red, green and yellow peppers, and a sweet pineapple slice, too-The Original Hotdog is only available on weekdays from 6-9 pm. It’s served with cheese, mustard and ketchup. For under 4,000 won, this is a great light meal to have with a good heavy beer. I have to sadly admit that I’ve walked past this pub since the end of June when it opened, and I never went in because I thought it was too fancy and expensive. Well, upon going in for this review, my mind has made a 180. The upbeat American music being played, the warm lighting, the ever so friendly owner, Tae Young Sung (태영성), and the excellently priced food and drinks sure put me in my place to not judge a book by its cover. Don’t let the beautiful wood architectural work fool you, like it did me. Come in with friends, or alone after work and rid all those worries from your day away! I know I will be heading here on a weekly basis on my walk home from teachingfor sure!Be in the loop by visiting their Facebook page face-book.com/percentcraftbeer where they will be posting about various future events, such as Guest Keg Night and 25,000 won unlimited tap night!

Hours:-Open 7 days a week from 5 or 6 pm to 2 am. How-ever, until November, they will open at 3 pm on the weekends, so that people can come in and enjoy the cool fall weather.

38 DAEGU COMPASS 2014.OCTOBER http://daegucompass.comTravel Korea - The Beauty of Autumn…

In South Africa, I live in a city that has a fairly sub-trop-ical climate, which means there isn’t much difference in the seasons. Summer and Winter seem to roll into one another without any regard for Autumn and Spring. The surrounding landscape remains fairly similar and the only difference in temperature is an average of 5 degrees. One of the first things I noticed living in Ko-rea was how I could literally see the seasons change. I remember my absolute awe at the Cherry Blossoms which announced the start of Spring and in October I was feeling the same about the bright yellow, red and orange leaves that adorned all the trees for the start of Autumn. If there’s one thing you need to do at this time of year, it’s to pay a visit to a little gem on the outskirts of Daegu – The Arboretum.

The Arboretum is a short walk from Daegok Station at the end of the red line and is open all year round, although I suspect it is most beautiful in Spring and Au-tumn. The most fascinating thing about the Arboretum is that the site it’s built on was actually a sanitary land-fill from 1986-1990. In efforts to restore this area, the

city government constructed botanical gardens that include more than 1 000 species of unique plants, making the Daegu Arboretum a wonderful example of how to restore a seriously damaged ecosystem.

In Autumn, the road leading up to the main entrance is rather impressive and lined with beautiful trees all sporting different shades of orange and red leaves. The main entrance pathway leads towards a central grass area where, on a good day, you’ll find plenty of children playing while the adults soak up the sun. There are pathways that lead off in every direction and there are also several trail routes for the more serious walkers. At the time I was there last year, they were hosting the Chrysanthemum Festival (keep a look at for it), which meant the beautiful Autumn hues of the trees were contrasted against a myriad of bold colours of the chrysanthemums…what a sight!

Various models had been made out of the bright coloured chrysanthemums and were displayed all over the exhibition. There were a lot of cute bears and then also a few bigger things like the traditional Korean house and dragon. The house was really cute and even had a little tunnel going through it which the children loved to run through (and the

Page 40: October 2014 Daegu Compass

40 DAEGU COMPASS 2014.OCTOBER http://daegucompass.comTravel Korea - The Beauty of Autumn…

adults liked to take photos in…and yes, by adults I mean my friends and I). The dragon was also very im-pressive with a mass of yellow chrysanthemums being used as the body and resting on a flower bed of different shades of pink. One of the most popular displays was the giant heart, which is by far the most loved symbol in Korea. It was such a hit there was even a line you had to stand in to get your obligatory picture of you posing in it (and yes…of course I took one).

If there’s no flower show on be sure to take a look at one of the Aboretums permanent features, the Cactus

Greenhouse. It reminds me so much of home. Not only is the Karoo landscape in South Africa littered with hauntingly beautiful cacti but my parents have a love for them as well, so my garden growing up was full of them. The Greenhouse has an impressive selection with my favourite being the Money Trees. Even though there weren’t many cacti that were actually flowering, they were still great to look at.

After wondering around the grounds be sure to walk along the little stream that leads back down to the en-trance. I can still picture the vivid colours of the trees. I have never seen such yellow and red leaves in my life before…it truly was beautiful…like something out of a painting. It’s nice to finally be able to experience sea-sons, where you can actually visualize them by looking

at your surroundings. For everyone in Daegu, or those coming to visit, definitely put this on your ‘to do’ list this Autumn…it’s one of the best free out-ings you can have!

For foreigners, the city of Daegu has so many positives. One of those positives is a short trip down Highway 25 or the Gyeongbu railroad line to a small city in Gyeong-sangnam-do called Miryang.

With a population around 110,000, Miryang, is famous for many things. It is well known for a popular 2007 Ko-rean movie with the same name. The city is also known for a 15th-century Neo-Confucian scholar named Kim Jong-jik and a 16th-century warrior-monk named Yu Jeong. But Miryang is also known for a very famous South Korean national monument.

The place is called Eoreumgol (얼음골), which means "ice valley." Euroeum means ice and gol means valley or gorge. This name comes from the valley having freezing cold temperatures even during the summertime. This is because of the cold air that comes up from the ground that makes the valley freezing cold all year around.

This cold air is then trapped in Eoreumgol due to Eore-umgol being filled by stones and it is difficult for warm weather to enter due to the cold weather being trapped. I had a chance to visit Eoreumgol in the middle of August of this year and it was experience that I enjoyed very much and want to share with you all.

Travel Korea - Eoreumgol (얼음골)

When I first arrived at Eoreumgol, it was very chilly. We went directly to the valley where we had a picnic. The valley had a nice stream, which is sur-rounded by big and small rocks, and the water is flowing in one direction down the stream.

It was the middle of August, and the water in the stream was very cold proving the point why Eo-reumgol is also called "ice valley." But despite the cold water, it felt very good on a hot day. There were a few deep parts that teenagers were jumping into, so be careful if you have small children. But most parts of the stream were about ankle high in water, so it was safe for young children to play in.

For 1000 won per adult, I was able to hike up Cheonhwang Mountain (천황산). Cheonhwang Mountain is about 600 meters above sea level. Like all mountains in Korea, I was able to enjoy the na-ture and the fresh air from the mountain. I continued hiking up the mountain and the first thing I visited was a small temple. A statue of the Buddha, was waiting in a temple to greet me. You are welcome to go inside, take your shoes off and bow down and pray to him if you want (just like all temples) but I wanted to continue my hiking.

I continued hiking up and I reached to 가마불 폭포. This falls had two types of waterfalls, one which is was for men (숮) and one which was for women (암). The men waterfalls was a straight normal fall but the water was like a shower water inside your bathroom. The small pond at the bottom of the waterfall felt very refreshing. It was cold but it was part of nature and it made all of my stress go away during that moment. After walking in it, I felt refreshed and was able to continue my hiking.

I went to the women's waterfall which was also like shower water, but this fall was not straight down; it looked like a water slide that had many curves at a wa-terpark. As the water flowed down, it curved into the small pond at the bottom. Once again this water was fresh and cool. It was relaxing and once again, I was able to enjoy the serenity of nature.

While hiking up and down the Cheonhwang Mountain, you are able to drink this fresh, cold water, which many residents in the Miryang area use this water to drink at their homes. You can also try to the cable car experience until 6:00pm every day. Throughout my experience at Eoreumgol, the weather was a lot colder than outside of the national monument. The weather definitely matched its name. So, next summer when Daegu is burning and you want to experience very cold, icy weather to cool down during the hot summer time, then take the short 60 kilometers trip southwest from Daegu to Miryang and go to Eoreumgol. If you take a train to Miryang Train Station, there are many buses that go from the train sta-tion to Eoreumgol. And also do not forget that Miryang is also famous for one more thing, very delicious, sweet and juicy apples. Remember to buy some as a sweet memory of your time in Miryang.

On the night of October 11th Angle Magazine promises an audiovisual feast at Daegu’s Jeng-iy Collective in honour of our first birthday cel-ebration. Over the past year, Angle Magazine has worked at showcasing the work of the tremendous talent and cre-ativity that, although abundant, is at times overlooked in the southern re-gions of the peninsula. It was start-ed by Philip Brett and Joshua Hanlin in Ulsan with the hope of providing a platform to expose this work and to improve and increase the creative community in the south. Wheth-er connecting musicians to their audience, connecting artists with artists, or in one case, connecting musicians with a spoken word artist for an impromptu collaboration, the work that we have been fortunate to feature has inspired people to go see some shows and to create their own art, and that has been truly re-warding. We’ve also been lucky to work with others to celebrate the talent that is out there. Last April, we joined forces with I Like Many Records and [b]racket magazine to create

the Big Day South festival, which was an overwhelming success. As much as we want to introduce you to new work through our site, there is no greater introduction than going out and seeing it for yourself. Big Day South gave people a chance to watch and partake in a creative process from beginning to end, and to see some of the best local bands from the south play live. The one year mark boasts a trail of events that have shared a sentiment Angle strives to promote, that of an inclusive, dynamic, creative culture that gives a sense of community to locals and foreigners, appreciators and creators alike. We have seven musical acts per-forming on the night. Daegu icons, The March Kings and Dogstar, will each bring their decade of experi-ence to the stage alongside other long-running acts Genius and Teng-ger, from Busan and Jeju Island re-spectively. We are also welcoming new talent, with bands who have had between two months and two years experience playing together in The Plastic Kiz, 57, and Damage Ceremony.

On the visual side we have our friends from [b]racket (talented art-ists in their own right) Jess Hinshaw and Christopher Cote making live art using an overhead projector. They will be joined by Daejeon based art-ist Rachel Rothwell, and more. We also encourage the audience to take part through crowd sourced photography. Disposable cameras will be left around the venue, and we ask you to help us document the night! Finally, we’re delighted to include Daegu’s Time To Give who will pro-vide a Polaroid photobooth where you can dress up with your friends and help to raise funds for a worthy cause. Make sure you come out on Octo-ber 11th to help us celebrate our first birthday, and to help us support a growing and thriving arts scene here in the south! Hear some new music, watch some live art, and help out a good cause. For more information, visit our web-site at anglekorea.org or come say hello on facebook.com/anglemag-azine

During the Labor Day weekend Daegu held its annual outside event at Druyu Park, The International Body Painting Festival. The two-day event was on Saturday and Sunday. Along with the participants of the show, there were vender selling beauty supplies, toys for the kids and all kinds of Korean food and drinks. Along with face painting and mask making there were artist that would draw your portrait. There was something for the entire family to enjoy.

The competition had two categories, Fantasy Make- up and Body Painting. There were twenty- five contestants

in the body painting and only fifteen doing the fantasy make-up. This is considerably less than last year. The countries represented this year were Russia, China, and South Korea, far less than previous years. However, there was a crowd of at least 4,000 on Saturday and about half that on Sunday. I believe that the overcast weather was the main reason for this lack of turnout.

Speaking with several of the body painting artist from Korea, this was their first competition. Baek J. Youn , Lim J. Hyun , Jiang Bing Chao and Yoo J. Hyeon all told

me it took 4 to 6 hours to complete their work. Ryu Sang Ah who has two months experience had one of the only two male models. Fu Ju Young of China had the other.

Competing in the fantasy make- up there was Oksana Medvedeva and Alina Milos from Russia. Miss Milos heard about the event from a make –up artist from her home in London England. She said, “I love Daegu and look forward to visiting Korea again”. One of the mod-els is from Russia and has been in prior events, her name is VLandi. She has lived here in Daegu for 10 years. She said, “It’s smaller but nice.”

The MCs of the show Lee Sang Hoon and the beautiful Jeong Yamin kept the show going at a good pace. Intro-ducing the rock band, folk singers and interviewing the artist and the models.

My personal favorite would have to be a 17-year-old junior in high school competing in the fantasy make-up category, Lim Ji Hyun. Her talents are extraordinary. She transformed model Rae Stassi, an elementary teacher from St. Louis into something from a horror movie. Lim Ji Hyun had a Halloween theme that hit the mark. Her model had blood red eyes and monsters painted on her. It took 6 hours but I think it paid off.

At the end of the show, there was a performance from a dance group from Columbia called Chico Chicas. They have been in Korea only 3 months and were so happy to perform. I would like to give a special thanks to Sam Soohyun Jung the event manager. He allowed me the chance to speak to everyone back stage. This is my 4th year coming to this event and I must say I am im-pressed each year. Talking with the audience, there are so many people looking forward to the event next year.

Telling it like it was, your friend Gary.

Suseong Lake area offers a change of pace to the hustle and bustle of downtown. Suseong Lake also boasts an amusement park (Suseong Land) reminiscent of those carnivals you went to with your parents at the local fair ground. There’s something to be said when you are on the back of the seahorse with a safety bar that barely locks you in place as you float for a few brief seconds in mid-air before being plunged back down in your seat. Thrilling, exhilarating are just a few choice words to describe the experience.

Suseong Lake area is one of the classiest places in Daegu, a perfect date area. After taking your sweetheart out to a nice meal, I’d recommend Napoli, Ganga, La Bella Cucina or New York New York, take a stroll around Suseong Lake until you come upon the famous ‘duck boats’ and paddle your way into each other’s hearts. Thanks to the photogs who took the great pics you see here. Aygul Sarvarova, Jeremy Taylor and Chanel Barlow.

An easy step-by-step guide on how to get food delivered right to your door. Mastering food delivery by phone in Korea is not difficult. Think of all those dozens of restaurants that are just a stone's throw from your apartment. Get past the nervousness of ordering once or twice and you will see an entirely new world of dining possibilities open up before you.

여보세요(yeobo say yo? / Hello?)

My address is Suseong-gu, Beomeo-dong Compass Villa 202.)

네, 고맙습니다.(ne, go-map-sum-ni-da. / Ok, thank you)

This is a sample conversation you might have when you order food. Try it out to get your favorite dish delivered right to your home. How convenient!

Daehan News / Two PpulGrilled over an open flame. That's the concept behind Daehan News and Two Ppul. After selecting your choice of steak or pork, a server really heats things up as it cooks your meat with a mini blowtorch. Sounds hot, right? The Korean sides provided com-pliment the meal perfectly. The interior of both restaurants is in true Korean 'pojang macha' style where dining around a stainless steel table with clear plastic walls shel-tering you from the elements. So next time its Korean night, head on over to either of these meaty restaurants. Check out the Bangcheon Market Map on p59 for directions.

Pic&iqVIP treatment at Pic&iq is what you get when dining at this special restaurant. The owner and chef caters personally to your dinner party since you have to make a reser-vation before coming. Why, you might wonder? Pic&iq is only opened from 6-10pm, and you can call from 3pm to reserve one of four tables. The dinner is a set menu of grilled, marinated pork, tortilla bread, salad and grilled tomatoes and bananas. The chef also prepares a special ramyeon for the meal. VIP treatment without the VIP prices makes this a wonderful experience. Check out the Bangcheon Market Map on p59 for directions.

Kim Gwang-suk RoadNot far from bustling downtown next to the Bangcheon Marketplace, Kim Kwang-suk Road is a lengthy alleyway that displays several murals and other small works of art upon its walls, dedicated to the popular Korean folk singer in the late 80’s and early 90’s, Kim Kwang-suk (1964~1996). He was well loved by the younger generations at the time for his soulful vocals and contemplative lyrics which deeply reflected the transition of Korea in late 80s. The area is quite isolated, taking you away from the busy and hectic city life, and dropping you into a surrealistic wonderland of art where time seems to be still for a moment.

GajokGajok means 'family' in Korean. That's the feeling you get when you step inside this wonderful Korean restaurant. Now, before you start to get a mental picture of the food it serves, just know that most of the meat is from the thigh and not the actual foot. What??? Yes, Gajok serves pig's foot for dinner.. But it's not like you are eating the hoof of the pig. In Korea, the foot and leg seems to go hand in hand, so it is similar to eating drumsticks (chicken legs). Enjoy! Check out the Bangcheon Market Map on p59 for directions.
