Notes from the Chorus Director Chorus Director Ko-Hsiu Hou

2016 marks the 40th anniversary of the Chinese Community Center (CCC) Chorus. What started in 1976 as a small group formed by a few young couples with small kids turned into a choir, performing for community services and cultural events over the years. The chorus even established the practice of holding the yearly spring concert 10 years ago. I believe that none of those who started the group had the slightest idea that the group would last for 40 years and come to where we are. Some of the original members are still in the choir and have seen all of this long journey. Over these years, the chorus has sung over 120 songs, written in various languages (English, Chinese, Taiwanese, Mongolian, Irish, Hebrew etc.) and of different genres (pop, folk, classical etc.). It’s the common love for music and the fun atmosphere that made us take up the challenges and push forward. As the chorus goes into the next decade, the fun will continue for all of us, new and old, and we are looking forward to seeing you all, year after year. If you share the same love for singing and feel like joining us, please contact the director Ko-Hsiu Hou ([email protected]) or the conductor Lucia Nyeu ([email protected]).

Our Songs, Our Stories Chorus Conductor Lucia Nyeu 林慈

The Chinese Community Center Chorus (CCC Chorus) was founded in 1976 under the auspices of Chinese Community Center, a non-profit organization devoted to promoting and supporting the appreciation of Chinese cultural heritage in the Capital District. Our chorus was initiated by a few amateur singers with a desire for individual musical enrichment and community cultural activities. It is the longest performing group in CCC. We have represented CCC and brought musical enjoyment at charity functions, corporate events and international festivals. We have performed in many venues throughout the area, including a 1989 joint concert at Lincoln Center’s Avery Fisher Hall with other Chinese choruses in the northeast states, and a 2011 MoHu (Mohawk Hudson Art Festival) performance at Schenectady’s Proctors Theater with eight other Community Choruses in the Capital District. The CCC Chorus performs a wide variety of music including Chinese classics, traditional as well as popular pieces. In our 40 years together, we have accumulated a music library of more than one hundred selections, with numerous folk songs from the many regions of China. Our chorus is open to the public, and no formal training is necessary to sing with us--simply a desire to learn vocal arts in Chinese music, and a dedication to community service.

Song of the White Cloud

The lyrics come from a poem by the prolific Tang Dynasty poet Li Bai (701-762). He bids farewell to his friend, who is retreating to the high mountains to pursue the life of a hermit in Chu Mountain. As they climb the mountains, viewing the cloud-shrouded peaks, the poet sings in admiration for his friend’s resolve to abandon the earthly life.

A troubadour playing with an old moon zither laments the fading of old songs and ways of life. Three poems from “Book of Odes” (1,000 BC) 關雎 Guan Ju

English translation by James Legge, 1815-1897 Guan-guan go the ospreys, On the islet in the river. The modest, retiring, virtuous, young lady; For our prince a good mate she. Here long, there short, is the duckweed, To the left, to the right, borne about by the current. The modest, retiring, virtuous, young lady; Waking and sleeping, he sought her. He sought her and found her not, And waking and sleeping he thought about her. Long he thought; oh! long and anxiously; On his side, on his back, he turned, and back again. Here long, there short, is the duckweed; On the left, on the right, we gather it. The modest, retiring, virtuous, young lady; With lutes, small and large, Let us give her friendly welcome. Here long, there short, is the duckweed; On the left, on the right, we cook and present it. The modest, retiring, virtuous, young lady; With bells and drums let us show our delight in her. A poem describes a man of the royal family in love with a girl who is collecting water plants, and his fantasy to be with her. Tao Yao

English translation by James Legge, 1875-1897 The peach tree is young and elegant; Brilliant are its flowers. This young lady is going to her future home, And will order well her chamber and house. The peach tree is young and elegant; Abundant will be its fruits. This young lady is going to her future home, And will order well her house and chamber. The peach tree is young and elegant; Luxuriant are its leaves. We gather and gather the plantain ; Now we have got them . We gather and gather the plantains; Now we pluck the ears. We gather and gather the plantains; Now we rub out the seeds. We gather and gather the plantains; Now we place the seeds in our skirts. We gather and gather the plantains; Now we tuck out skirts under our girdles.

English translation: Very quietly I take my leave As quietly as I came here; Quietly I wave good-bye To the rosy clouds in the western sky. The golden willows by the riverside Are young brides in the setting sun; Their reflections on the shimmering waves Always linger in the depth of my heart. The floating heart growing in the sludge Sways leisurely under the water; In the gentle waves of Cambridge I would be a water plant! That pool under the shade of elm trees Holds not water but the rainbow from the sky; Shattered to pieces among the duckweeds Is the sediment of a rainbow-like dream? To seek a dream? Just to pole a boat upstream To where the green grass is more verdant; Or to have the boat fully loaded with starlight And sing aloud in the splendor of starlight. But I cannot sing aloud Quietness is my farewell music; Even summer insects keep silence for me Silent is Cambridge tonight! Very quietly I take my leave As quietly as I came here; Gently I flick my sleeves Not even a wisp of cloud will I bring away

English translation: Youth talks and dreams so much Of dances, gallops, and parties; Suddenly it reaches a false goal, Then we hear it sigh and complain. Soon the throat hurts, and soon the chest hurts, Lost is the heavenly delight. "Just this time, health, come back to me!" Thus pleads from heaven the hopeful glance. Recently a girl thought, in her sadness, That her last hour had come. But the wheel of fate did not stand still Now joys are dawning for her more beautifully. So friends raise the joyous song: "May dear Irene live long, to be sure, May she often think of false Fate, But may her cheerful gaze never grow sad." ‘

My beloved is mine and I am his, The shepherd [grazing his flock] among the lilies.. Awaken, north wind, and come, south wind. My beloved is mine and I am his, The shepherd [grazing his flock] among the lilies. Summertime "Summertime" is an aria composed in 1934 by George Gershwin for the 1935 opera Porgy and Bess. The lyrics are by DuBose Heyward, the author of the novel Porgy on which the opera was based, although the song is also co-credited to Ira Gershwin by ASCAP. The song soon became a popular and much recorded jazz standard, described as "without doubt ... one of the finest songs the composer ever wrote ... Gershwin's highly evocative writing brilliantly mixes elements of jazz and the song styles of blacks in the southeast United States from the early twentieth century". Composer and lyricist Stephen Sondheim has characterized Heyward's

lyrics for "Summertime" and "My Man's Gone Now" as "the best lyrics in the musical theater". The song is recognized as one of the most covered songs in the history of recorded music, with more than 33,000 covers by groups and solo performers. Musicologist K. J. McElrath wrote of the song: Gershwin was remarkably successful in his intent to have this sound like a folk song. This is reinforced by his extensive use of the pentatonic scale (C–D–E–G–A) in the context of the A minor tonality and a slow-moving harmonic progression that suggests a “blues”. Because of these factors, this tune has been a favorite of jazz performers for decades and can be done in a variety of tempos and styles. [By David Cudzilo] The Shadow of Your Smile "The Shadow of Your Smile", also known as "Love Theme from The Sandpiper", is a popular song. The music was written by Johnny Mandel with the lyrics written by Paul Francis Webster. The song was introduced in the 1965 film The Sandpiper, with a trumpet solo by Jack Sheldon and later became a minor hit for Tony Bennett (Johnny Mandel arranged and conducted his version as well). It won the Grammy Award for Song of the Year and the Academy Award for Best Original Song. In 2004 the song finished at #77 in AFI's 100 Years...100 Songs poll of the top tunes in American cinema. [David Cudzilo] Amazing Grace Amazing grace! how sweet the sound, That saved a wretch like me! I once was lost, but now am found, Was blind, but now I see. 'Twas grace that taught my heart to fear, And grace my fears relieved; How precious did that grace appear, The hour I first believed! Through many dangers, toils and snares, I have already come; 'Tis grace has brought me safe thus far, And grace will lead me home.

Beautiful Dreamer “Beautiful Dreamer” is an American parlor song by Stephen Foster, this sentimental ballad is folk-like in character with its repetitious but lovely melody. Lyrics: Beautiful dreamer, wake unto me, starlight and dewdrops are awaiting thee. Sounds of the rude world heard in the day, Led by the moonlight have all passed away. Beautiful dreamer, queen of my song, List while I woo the with soft melody. Gone are the cares of life's busy throng, Beautiful dreamer awake unto me. Beautiful dreamer awake unto me!

Beautiful dreamer, out on the sea, Mermaids are chanting the wild lorelei, Over the streamlet vapors are borne, Waiting to fade at the bright coming morn. English translation: How delightful this branch of fresh flowers, I the owner will wear it not out of doors, But I will hold the fresh flower and be happy. How delightful this branch of the Moo-lee flower, In the full plot of flowers blowing freely none excels it. I the owner will wear this gathered branch, Wear it yet fear, the flower seen, men will envy. This is a folk song from the southern region of the Yangtze River. Local girls stroll in the fields of flowers, they pick jasmine flowers and wear them in their hair for its sweet perfume. The girl sings to the flower, confides her fascination of love and beauty in secrecy. When the British ambassador George McCartney visited China during the reign of Emperor Qianlong in 1792, John Barrow, one of the entourage collected the song in his journal (Travel in China, 1802) and wrote down the melody and lyrics of Mo Li Hua on the western musical staff. This version of Mo Li Hua later spread throughout the world because the melody is featured in Puccini’s famous opera Turandot (1924).

English translation: The great gushing Yangtze with piling waves flows towards the east, Away it carries gallant souls of the remote bygone days. The ancient fort on the west is said to be The Crimson Cliff, where Zhou of the Three Kingdoms era Wei's navy defeated. Stones were hurled into the sky indiscriminatingly, Mighty waves must have crushed onto shores hurling high snow-like foam. The river and mountains today's landscapes paint, Where once there were many courageous and heroic men.

Picture Zhou in his prime, Dressed in plain clothes together with his young bride, gallant he must have been. Topped with a silk crest, he held in his hand a fan of feathers, With humour he helped see to That the masts and sculls of Wei's navy go up in smoke and ashes turn into. My mind wanders in the history vested hither, My sentimentality no doubt has caused my early grey. Life is a dream, Allow me to libate a drink to the river, the moon and its reflection. Poet Su Shi (1037-1101) is one of the most important literati in the classical Chinese literature. In “Crimson Cliff” he was inspired by the naval battle of the Three Kingdoms era (208 AD) which took place by the Cliff. The poem is so popular just about every young student across the continent can recite it through thousands of years to this day. Qin Zhu wrote a cavatina for “Musing on the Crimson Cliff” (1922). It was a major pioneering work of adaption of western music style to a classical Chinese poem. The four-part chorus work was arranged by Qu Xixian in 1960s, and has gradually become a standard selection in the choral repertoire. No Idea in Which Direction the Wind Blows

Besides “Saying Good-bye to Cambridge Again” and “By Chance”, “No Idea in Which Direction the Wind Blows” is also one of Hsu Tsi-Mo’s most popular poems. Melodious word flow, neatly balanced paragraphs, and dynamic emotional revelations—these make for near-perfect structured lyrics in the poem for the composer. As the wind-like piano sends ripples gently across, the long vocal lines riding above make the sorrows in the dream more real and vivid. You lie as you swear, your pledge fades with wind from west, Dream in fantasy, I wake like the withered flowers. Like fire on the prairie, my passion sparkles in the dark sky, Thunder and lighting, you break my heart when I need you in earnest. I have had love, hate, dream and despair, they toiled me from everywhere, By now agony and ecstasy subside, I swear my wounds will heal in a whirl.
