    20,000 Leagues Under the Sea

    - Jules Verne(Published 1870)

20,000 Leagues under the Sea follows the adventures of a maritime crew through the eyes of French marine biologist,

Professor Aronnax. The crew are aboard a drastically advanced submarine, the Nautilus, and sail free of any jurisdiction

or authority. Captain Nemo, who has long been at sea, takes Aronnax and his entourage to explore all the 7 seas

(travelling 20,000 leagues in all around the world). Through-out the book Aronnax describes the many different

wonders of the earths unexplored, underwater world.

Verne seems to predict the future of maritime technology and its uses in warfare. In 1869, when T-T L.U.T.S was

written, the world hadnt even really dipped its toe into underwater sea exploration. A few 1or2 person subs, the divingbell and the really heavy diving suits wear around. But, according to the University of Wisconsin Sea Grants website,

1864 saw Frenchmen Benoit Rouquayrot and Auguste Denayrouze invent the scuba outfit similar to the ones used in

Vernes story. He used the latest inventions as well as those still the planning stages. At this time invention was a big

thing. The Crystal Palace had held the Great Exhibition in 1851 where thousands of inventors gathered to show how

they were pushing the world into the future. So, as you can imagine, this was a time of excitement and discovery.

    My Three Scenes

Excerpt One: Chapter XXIV The Coral Kingdom

This first scene is a journey through a fantastic submerged forest with rare corals. There was a choice of three stages

in the journey but Ive chosen the actual burial scene. I was tempted by the mid-point with the arches and dense

underwater forest imagery but I felt it could be really exciting to create to awe and wonder of the clearing yet somehow

incorporate the sadness of the funeral. It feels like an obvious choice but as I say, the one Im most interested in

exploring. The light source is they head lamps so will be an interesting one for shadows and to see how that light

    bounces through the trees.

Excerpt Two: Chapter III A Priceless Pearl

On the way to the grotto of the giant oyster. Vernes description of the scene is so vivid that I felt draw to it. I want toshow the entrance of the grotto but show it in the distance past the pyramid-like rocks and plants like war-machines.

In the scene Aronnax is in fear of a shark attack so I want to perhaps create a few misleading shadows created by the

corals and seaweed. I was tempted by an earlier scene when the exploring party walk through a life rich shallow ocean.

Its just about daybreak so the light breaking through would be interesting but the tension of the scene Ive chosen

    won over

Excerpt Three: Chapter IX The Lost Continent

It has to be Atlantis! When I discovered I had 20,000 LUTS this was the scene I thought of. The lost world. However, there was the section describing the dead forest where the night sea creatures are lurking in hidden crevasses and

almost haunting plus the volcanic light source thrown on. However my first two excerpts are naturally created wonders

which the tree, rock and coral formations. Atlantis would give the opportunity to explore man-made ancient architecture

eroded and engulfed by the sea. Still the vast volcanoes glow will play a distant effect on the sunken city but only the

foreground (as this is where Nemo and Aronnax are standing). The exploration takes place at night so the other light

sources will be the desperate bits of moonlight streaming through the sea.

    Artist Influences

    Ross Dearsley

    http://conceptartworld.com/?p=10222 http://www.rossdearsley.com/

Ross Dearsley is a professional freelance concept artist and illustrator based in Berkshire, United Kingdom. Ross works

in a variety of entertainment media areas including video games, print, film & television.

I really like his brushwork and how it ties the whole image together. For example, this piece for Order of Phoenix(below) has the common theme of this striped brush stroke. Dearsley, rather than try to create something that lookedrealistic/photographic he has the whole scene in this blocky theme. A giant fire snake would seem too unbelievable ina realistic setting so his style means that the whole scene and world become integrated with the fantasy and thenacceptably believable.

This is another piece for the same film. This time the themed brush is square. This gives the dementors ragged cloakan even more abnormal feel as it doesnt follow the theme.

    Angela Sung

    http://conceptartworld.com/?p=9472 http://interstellang.blogspot.com/

Angela Sung is a concept artist from Los Angeles, California currently working as a background layout artist at

Titmouse. Angela has created concept art and illustrations for companies such as Sony Computer Entertainment

Europe, Fantasy Flight Games, Nicalis, Inc. and many more

Sung uses really soft brushes that create these velvety environments. It really adds this sense of wonder and yet

believable fantasy. The sense of perspective through multiple layers and colour is really nice too. Theres a lot of

information shes gives that tells the viewer how theyre seeing the scene. In the second image particularly there is a

feeling that were perched on a branch like the fairy below.

    Lianna Tai

    http://conceptartworld.com/?p=9214 http://mynameislianna.weebly.com/

Lianna Tai is a concept artist and illustrator from Los Angeles, California currently working at SuperBot Entertainment,

Inc. Lianna attended Art Center College of Design and has worked in creating visual development, concept designs and

    illustrations.

Tais works with these pastel colours even though her work is almost Disney-like in its splendor. These more tranquil

colours make the world depicted in the scene more realistic. Similar to Sung, she uses very soft brush strokes. In the

second image, and something that appears in a few of her works, shes added the glowing orbs. In this they suggest

fireflies but they add to the atmosphere quite a lot. Although it could be a little cheesy, without the piece wouldnt have

    the same impact.

    Victorian

Victorian art follows similar themes in its pastel tone and blocky colours however the image that culturally springs to

mind is of a bland sepia colour photo style. This saturated orange/brown colour could be a useful tool to bringing theawareness of the era into the landscapes.

    In Conclusion:

I want to be able to create this feeling wonder that these 3 artists create, in my scenes. Although my settings are

natural and possible places I want the audience to feel the amazement that Aronnax feels as he explores places seen

by only a handful of people if any. Ill use the common brush strokes to tie the piece together, the soft brushes to

create that fantasy texture and the little specks in the atmosphere to add to the wonder. These 3 things will also help

to create the feeling of being underwater and under pressure. For example, the volcano ash floating around the Atlantis

    scene.

    Critical Thumbnails

    Coral Kingdom

I like the idea of an angled horizon line, gives an almost floating feel to the scene. And to show the scene from above

so the vast clearing can be fully appreciated and also the association between funerals and looking down would aid

the mournful effect I want to go for. In the second thumbnail the trees are land based trees only to get the suggestion

of the arching branches. In the grave yard images I researched they tended to have a lot within them but still have the

empty/ bare feeling. Something like bare trees are common in these images so I wanted to show this in my design.

    The Priceless Pearl

This scene I tend to call it the ominous rock scene as sends a strong image to my mind. A lot of the effect of this

scene will be created by the contract of shadow and light. I plan for the shadows to be unnatural, like in Dr. Cagliari.

This should create unease about the scene. The first thumbnail here has some Tim Burton style rocks, I dont plan for

them to be as obscure but I want to take it in the direction of somethings not right and jaunty rocks would greatly aid

the effect. The second thumbnail is from within the corridor of rocks. I could get a greater effect if the angle was from

the same view as the characters so the audience experience it along with them.

    The Lost Continent

I considered this scene from within the city itself however the effect of how huge the city is would be lost almost. I

didnt want it to be like a normal city underwater I wanted to show the mass of the whole continent. The first thumbnail

was an idea I had about Atlantis being on different levels. The close up column means the detail of the ware caused by

the sea can be seen. The second shows the idea of a continuous city as seen from the ledge of the volcano. I would

create a lot of layers for this like the artist Angela Sung to the distance becomes detectable.

For thumbnail I used the soft brushed used by my artist and began experimenting with multiple levels to create the

    depth illusion.

    Written Assignment

Analyse critically the production design and visual concept(s) ofThe Lion King(1994)

    Introduction

The Lion Kingwas release in 1994 by Walt Disney Pictures as their 32nd animated feature. Directors Roger Allers and

Rob Minkoff worked closely alongside their huge team of animators to create this African inspired film. Andy Gaskill, as

art director, over saw the whole creative process keeping the films style and design continuous throughout. Chris

Sanders, however, was responsible for designing the look for the film as production designer. He and his team

designed the visual concepts during The Lion Kingspre-production which would what set the style direction the film

would take. As an animated feature the restrictions of a physical set are removed and the freedom to tell the story,

quite strongly, through visual means can be exploited. Sanders creates a look that greatly represents it African setting

but that also captures the mood of the scene through its colour association and even by drastically changing the stylefor fantasised sequences.

    07/11/11

Sammy Butler: Have you found some artist that you like the style of? http://conceptartworld.com/ is a site I found reallyhelpful.

I really like the idea of the saturated design with just a few colours suggesting a mood. Could look really effective.

How does the 'look' youre going for in each design reflect on the story of scene? Your images need to tell the story

just as much as they show the environment.

Look forward to seeing your ideas :)
