Groete Sanet Venter

A high profiled meeting took place between the North West Business Forum and the Depart-ment of Economic Development, Environment, Conservation and Tourism in which the Depart-ment was represented by the new Head of the Department Mr Tseko Nell, Ms Mercy Tumane (Planning), Ms Onica Sethole (SMME Support) , Ms Mokone (Procurement) and Ms Lebo Diale (Conservation and Envi-ronment). The North West Business Forum was represented by the President of the Forum, Mr Kelebogile McHarvey Seboka, accompanied by Mr Boeta Du Toit (1st Vice President), Mr Neville Maimane (2nd Vice President), Ms Karen Landsberg (Management Member and Ms Lerato Mosimane (The Forum’s Secretariat). This meeting was initiated by the North West Business Forum with an aim of strengthening working relations with the department as custodians of economic develop-ment initiatives in the province from a policy directive point of view. The North West Business Forum’s objectives being articulated by the President Mr Kelebogile McHar-vey Seboka, is in the main to en-deavour to unify business in the province, to facilitate engagements with the province; to profile the North West Province as the pre-ferred Business Destination, at the

same time represent, protect and promote the collective interests of business in the North West prov-ince in respect of socio-economic matters and the scope or spheres within which relevant decisions related to policy matters can be discussed. Of interest to the Department was the declaration statement by the fo-rum where the management mem-bers of the forum expressed ex-plicitly their preparedness to work with the department in various programs and therefore willing to align their activities and business strategies to the economic priority projects identified by the depart-ment as as the province at large. The Head of the Department Mr Tseko Nell, welcomed the Forum and the initiatives outlined with regards to supporting the Depart-mental objectives of fast tracking and unlocking economic opportu-nities. Mr Nell emphasized their concern regarding some of the economic activities and business opportunities that benefits busi-nesses elsewhere with less spi-noffs to business in the province, and that proper structuring of such procurement opportunities need to be directed in the main to the economy of the province. “Challenges related to capacity and quality of services by some suppliers in the province some-times influenced procurement beyond the province”, said Mrs. Mokone who alluded to some of

the concerns influencing procure-ment not really favouring business in the province. Amongst others, the forum would like to see the Provincial Devel-opment Plan, emanating from the National Development plan find-ing space in the Departmental Economic Development strate-gies so that there is alignment in all the strategic documents as well as plenary initiatives so as to focus efforts to a very disciplined execu-tion of programs through interac-tions and partnerships with vari-ous businesses. The Forum affirmed its repre-sentation which is quite diverse, inclusive of all the sectors, such as Agriculture, Mining, Financial institutions, Retail, Active State Agencies, other Chamber Associ-ates, Corporate Members as well as SMME’s. The representation of the forum cover even Wild Life Associations where there can be working relations to create a plat-form of engagement between the department and game farmers given sometimes very challeng-ing issues requiring high level de-cisions as well as clarification of policy issues to affected members for consideration. The participation of the North West Business Forum in the prior provincial growth and develop-ment strategies through working groups was also referred to as es-sential.

Achievements through intellec-tual contributions to the working groups were commended. A similar setup where business

may find platform to interact with the department and other stake-holders was suggested as an ideal model to map the way forward.

The Sanlam Cancer Challenge, South Africa’s biggest mass participation sports event, will be teeing it up in the North West this weekend as part of the drive to raise funds for cancer research and support. The Stilfontein club competition will take place on Saturday 26 April at Stilfon-tein Golf Club. To register for the club competitions, please go to www.sanlamcancerchal-lenge.co.za. The winners of the club competitions

will go through to the regional finals, and the winners here qualify for the finals at the Gary Player Country Club and Lost City Golf Course at Sun City from 20-21 October. “We were blown away by the support we received in the 2013 series and the re-cord R3.3-million we were able to raise for the Cancer Association of South Af-rica (CANSA). The success of this series and its effectiveness in the fight against cancer relies on every single golfer in South Africa to play his or her part, from

our patron Ernie Els to the club golfer. And we appreciate every bit of support. The Sanlam Cancer Challenge enables club golfers anywhere in the country to do something positive and make a real impact through the game they love,” said Sanlam Sponsorship Manager, Gary van Loggerenberg. About the Sanlam Cancer Challenge and CANSASanlam and CANSA have partnered the Sanlam Cancer Challenge since 1993.

CANSA offers a unique integrated service to the public and all people affected by cancer. As a leading roleplayer in cancer research (more than R6 million spent an-nually), the scientific findings and knowl-edge gained from the research is used to realign CANSA’s health programmes as well as strengthen its watchdog role to the greater benefit of the public. CAN-SA’s wide-reaching health programmes include prevention and education cam-paigns, CANSA Care Centres that offer stoma and lymphoedema clinics, medical

There is also patient care and support in the form of 11 CANSA Care Homes for out-of-town cancer patients in the main metropolitan areas plus one hospitium (based in Polokwane) as well as two CANSA-TLC Lodges for paediat-ric oncology parents in Pretoria and Lim-popo.
