This interdisciplinary forum dedicated to Ecuador brings together practitioners and academics, providing insights on the current state and prospects of Ecuadorian business, politics, and culture.
Switzerland and Ecuador have fostered excellent political and economic bilateral relations in the past, since the 1888 Convention on Friendship, Establishment, and Trade. Switzerland opened a consulate in Quito in 1938, and an embassy has been in place since 1963. In 2016, 2732 Ecuadorians were settled in Switzerland, and 1,760 Swiss nationals were living in Ecuador at the end of 2017, well-balanced migrationflows.More recently, in June 2018, Ecuador and EFTA members (Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Norway, and Iceland) signed a Free Trade Agreement, lowering high tariffs of Ecuadorian products.
Trade between Ecuador and EFTA member states amounted to CHF 245 million in 2017, 85 % corresponded to trade between Ecuador and Switzerland. Main exports toSwitzerlandincludecocoa, bananas, broccoli, pineapples, rosesandotherflowers, frozen shrimp, canned tuna, fruit juices and pulps as well as gold. In turn, popular Swiss goods in Ecuador are pharmaceuticals, chemicals, and machinery. In 2016, Swiss FDI in Ecuador stood at CHF 310 million, and Swiss corporations employed over 5,400 people locally. Some relevant Swiss manufacturers operating in Ecuador are Holcim, Sika, Nestlé, ABB, Plantabal, or Omya.
The investment of the new President Lenín Moreno began by breaking ties with Correa’s popular revolution, marking a new way in Ecuadorian politics.
The Ecuadorian culture shows considerable ethnic and linguistic diversity. Besides Spanish, Quichua and several other Amerindian and mestizo languages account for around 10 % of the linguistic panorama. Literary (Juan Montalvo or Gabriela Alemán), artistic (Oswaldo Guayasamín), and musical heritage, with different kinds of genres like the Pasillo, Bomba, or the Andean dance Sanjuanito, which originates from the Imbabura province, altogether make a rich and multifaceted national production. The forum promotes an open, interactive discussion between attendants and lecturers.
