오페라갤러리 서울은 1980년대 거리미술로 시작된 그래피티

아트가 어떻게 현재 세계 미술의 중심으로 발전하며 변화되었는지,

그래피티의 독특한 시각 언어와 그 고유한 태도의 변화양상을

조명하는 <City as Canvas, Poppy Graffiti> 전을 선보인다.

1960년대 말 뉴욕의 할렘가에 낙서가 범람하면서부터 본격적으로

예술로 인정받기 시작한 그래피티는 1970년대부터는 힙합과 더불어

언더그라운드 문화의 대명사로 자리잡은 거리 예술 (street art)

로 일컬어진다. 그래피티는 건물벽이나 지하철역의 광고판, 차량,

열차 등에 자동차 공업도색에서 사용되는 캔 스프레이를 이용하여

그려지는 것을 특징으로 한다. 점차 기성문화에 반발하는 젊은

층의 공유물에서 벗어나 색다른 영역으로 스타일을 키우며 진화한

그래피티는 대중문화 전반에 걸쳐 영향을 미치기 시작하며 거대한

주류로 성장하고 있다.

서울 오페라갤러리는 이러한 대중의 관심에 부합하고자 <City

as Canvas, Poppy Graffiti> 를 선보인다. <Life is Beautiful>

이란 전시로 LA 전 도시를 휩쓸며 꼭 보아야 할 전시로 전정되며

그래피티의 선풍(旋風) 을 일으킨 미스터 브레인워시 (Mr. Brain.

wash)의 유머스런 작품들과, 1980년대부터 그래피티의 트랜드를

이끌어 왔으며, 그래피티 아트의 대부로 평가받는 씬 (SEEN)의 최근

작품들, 그리고 혁신적인 기술을 이용해 보는 각도에 따라 3개의 다른

이미지를 나타내는 키네틱 아트 (Kin.etic Art)를 선보이며 시대의

아이콘들의 이미지를 독특하고 특별한 착시 현상으로 재탄생킨

루빈스타인의 작품이 이번 전시에서 소개된다.

<City as Canvas, Poppy Graffiti>는 낙서를 넘어 그래피티를 예술의

차원으로 끌어올린 세계적인 작가들의 작품을 국내에서 만나볼 수

있는 귀한 전시이다.

Opera Gallery Seoul proudly presents, <City as Canvas, Poppy Graffiti>, an exhibition visualize a great variation of graffiti art from 1980s to the global movement it has become today, concentrating on how this unique visual language or attitude has evolved. Graffiti gained popularity when large cartoon-like symbols started flooding the streets of Harlem, New York in the late 60s and early 70s.

Today, graffiti can be defined as street art which has since settled down to become the essence of underground culture mixed with hip hop. Graffiti is characterized by its use of public walls, buildings and trains as a canvas. Its most popular medium is the industrial spray paint used in painting automobiles. Graffiti Art has since evolved, its style changing and adapting to various regions of the world. It gradually appealed to the younger generation because it rejects art codes and standards and challenges pre-established rules. It now exists in the main stream as a legitimate art form.

To respond to the public’s growing interest, Opera Gallery Seoul delightfully present <City as Canvas, Poppy Graffiti>, an exhibition devoted to this form of “Graffiti”. This exhibition feature 3 the most dynamic artists from the graffiti and hip hop community, SEEN, Mr. Brainwash and Patrick Rubinstein.

The humorous works of Thierry Guetta, otherwise known as Mr. BRAINWASH who had a legendry exhibition, <Life if Beautiful> which stroke the whole city of LA, and major latest works by SEEN, a leader of the graffiti trend since the 1980s, revered as the godfather of graffiti art, as well as the works of Patrick Rubinstein, so popular with collectors around the world for Opt Art (Kinetic Art) that he has created displaying three views of the same subject taken at different angles.

<City as Canvas, Poppy Graffiti> is a unique opportunity for Seoul to discover various works of world-class artists who have raised graffiti to the ranks of high-quality art.

4 - Poppy Graffiti - City as Canvas

Born in 1961 in the Bronx in New York, SEEN is 11 when he starts to customize cars with spray paint in his uncle’s garage. In the 70s, while painting whole cars in the New York subway, he finds his place in the history of art. At that time, the graffiti movement is booming and SEEN becomes one of its ultimate representatives. He picks the name «SEEN» that perfectly illustrates his desire to «be seen» and get renowned on the art scene.

In the 80s, his work took on another dimension and he became in.ternationally famous. In the 1981, he took a seat alongside Andy Warhol and Keith Haring in the exhibition «New York/New Wave» at P.S.1. in New York. Urban art, initially a subversive language in.the public space, was about to become legitimate and regarded as a recognised form of art, sucessfully moving from the street to the walls of art galleries and museums.

1961년 뉴욕의 브롱스 출생인 씬(본명 리차드 미란도)은 1973년부터

뉴욕 지하철에 그래피티 작업을 시작한 ‘그래피티의 대부’ 이다.

앤디 워홀처럼 유명해지고 싶은 열망과 함께 미술계의 ‘눈에 띄기

(to seen)’를 원했던 그는 SEEN이라는 이름으로 활동을 시작하였

고 1980년대에 들어 비로소 그가 원했던 국제적인 명성을 얻게 되었

다. 특히 뉴욕 지하철의 ‘whole cars’라는 그의 80년대 작품은 작

가를 그래피티 예술계의 리더로 자리매김하게 했다.

다른 언더그라운드 작가들과 함께 UA ‘Untied Artists’ 그룹을 형

성하여 활동하기도 했으며 1981년 뉴욕 MoMA, P.S 1 갤러리에서 앤

디 워홀, 키스 해링, 바스키아와 함께 <뉴욕/새로운 물결 New York/

New Wave>라는 제목의 전시를 가졌는데, 이를 통해 당시 불온한 것

으로 여겨지던 그래피티를 거리의 벽이 아닌 유명 갤러리와 미술관

의 벽으로 옮기며 하나의 정당한 예술 장르로서 자리 매김하게 되었

다. 이러한 변화의 현장에 선두에 있었던 SEEN의 작품은 뉴욕은 물

론 파리, 독일, 런던, 홍콩 등 미국과 유럽 그리고 아시아의 다양한 전

시를 통해 지속적으로 소개되어 현재 전세계적으로 많은 미술관과 컬

렉터들이 소장하고 있다.

Thierry Guetta, alias Mr Brainwash, is a filmmaker and a pop artist who was born in 1966 in Sarcelles, France, and based in Los Angeles. He has spent the better part of the last decade attempting to make the ultimate street art documentary. Meanwhile, inspired by his subjects, he started hitting the streets, from Los Angeles, New York, Tokyo to Paris, with spray painted stencils and posters of his pop art inspired images.He rapidly emerged as a renowned figure on the international street art scene. In June 2008, Mr Brainwash debuted one of the most memorable solo exhibitions of Los Angeles entitled Life is Beautiful. By 2009, Brainwash’s work has garnered so much recognition that Madonna approached him to design the cover of her greatest hits “Celebration”. In addition to the CD album, he created 15 different covers for the accompanying vinyls, singles and DVDs. On February 14th 2010, Mr Brainwash made his New York solo debut as he unveiled Icons, a 15,000 square-foot exhibition in the heart of the Meatpacking District.Major collectors acquired Mr Brainwash’s works followed by some of the most prestigious auction houses such as Christie’s and Phillips. Considered as one of the most prolific and talked about artists of today, Mr Brainwash is also the subject of Banksy’s documentary Exit Through The Gift Shop. Their collaboration resulted in a remarkable documentary that is part personal journey and part exposé of the Art world with its mind-altering mix of hot air and hype.

Mr. Brainwash (1966)

미스터 브레인 워시 (Mr.Brain.wash)는 프랑스 작가 티에리 구에타

(Thierry Guetta)의 작가명이다. 뱅크시와 직접적인 교류를 나누고

있던 미스터 브레인워시는 거리에 유명인의 초상화를 패러디한

작품들을 그려 넣으며 작품활동을 계속해나갔고, 2008년 (6월 18일)

LA CBS스튜디오에서 비로소 자신만의 첫 전시회 “삶은 아름다워

(Life is beautiful)”를 열게 되면서, 단번에 미술계의 이슈를 불러

일으킨다. 특히, 앤디 워홀의 캠밸 스푸를 재해석한 ‘토마토

스프레이’ 작품은 LA Weekly 주간지의 표지를 장식하기도 했다.

전시회의 성공에 힘입어, 마돈나는 2009년 새 앨범 “Celebration

의 표지 디자인을 미스터 브레인워시에게 의뢰하였으며, 동료예술가

뱅크시는 2010년 본인이 감독한 다큐멘터리 “Exit Through The Gift

Shop (선물 가게를 통한 출구)” 에 미스터 브레인 워시를 주연으로

캐스팅하였다. 언더그라운드 작가로 출발했으나, 현대사회의 ‘

아이콘’에 주목한 미스터 브레인워시의 작품들은 작가 자신을

점차 문화 예술계의 핫 아이콘으로 만들기에 충분했다. 팝음악

등 대중예술의 아이콘을 적극 받아들이고, 사진, 에어브러쉬 등

대량생산의 기법들을 활용하면서도, 그것을 적절하게 워홀의

실크스크린 방식이나, 잭슨 폴록의 드리핑 기법과 연결시키는 작가의

예술적 혜안은 그의 작품을 문화예술계의 맥락 속에 위치시키는

지점이 된다. 그에게 많은 영향을 미친 쉐퍼드 페어리, 뱅크시 등의

스트릿 아티스트들에 대한 관심과 활동이 점차 커져가면서, 미스터

브레인워시는 다음 세기의 기대되는 예술가로 촉망받고 있다.

오늘날 그의 작품들은 크리스티, 소더비 등의 경매사를 비롯, 많은

미술시장 관계자들의 눈길을 끌고 있으며, 언더그라운드의 스트릿

아트가 많은 사람들의 공감속에 새로운 미술사의 역사로 자리잡는

것을 보여주고 있다.

Patrick Rubinstein was born in 1960 in Paris to a mother passionate about cinema and a father avant-gardist and dabller in many trades; his dad initiated him to kinetic art at a very young age, with an emphasis on Op Art. In 1978, his father taught him a specific technique of composing collages by cutting and pasting pictures. This would greatly influence Rubinstein after his father’s death in 2006.He first worked in fashion creating his own brands before trying his hand at kinetic art. Thanks to 3D and digital technologies, the artist started producing pieces displaying three views of the same subject taken at different angles. Drawing his inspiration from cinema, music, pop art, cartoons, painting and even science, Rubinstein presents portrays of iconic characters while combining different worlds. “A work of art is successful if it triggers emotions. And Emotion is anything that touches our deepest soul, our memory” says Rubinstein. Indeed, his huge tree-dimensional pieces magnify emotions as they reflect collective memory of Western civilization. Patrick Rubinstein enjoys international fame. He recently produced monumental motorised columns displaying rotating news bulletins; a new concept that seduced the Alcazar restaurant in the Saint-Germain-des-Prés quarter of Paris, thus making him a true heir of Op Art.

Patrick rUBiNStEiN (1960)

1960년 프랑스에서 태어난 패트릭 루빈스테인은 패션분야에서

경력을 시작한 팝아티스트이자 옵티컬 아티스트이다. 키네틱 아트

(Kinetic Art)라고 불리는 그의 작품은 움직임을 중시하거나 그것을

주요소로 하는 혁신적인 기술을 이용한 작업으로 보는 각도에 따라 3

개의 다른 이미지를 감상할 수 있다. 루빈스테인은 우리가 어린 시절

열광했던 마이클 잭슨, 슈퍼맨, 마를린 먼로, 비틀즈 등 스타들의

이미지를 독특하고 특별한 착시 현상으로 재탄생 시킨다. 작가가 10대부터

시작한 작업 방식은 사진과 영화에 기초하는데 먼저 사진을 얇게

자르고, 또 다른 사진도 잘게 잘라 첫 번째 사진 안쪽에 끼워 넣는다.

그 다음 이 두 이미지를 붙이고 아코디언처럼 접어 입체적인 이미지를

탄생시킨다. 정면에서 바라보면 2가지 이미지가 겹쳐 보이지만, 각각의

측면에서 보면 또 다른 새로운 이미지가 나타난다. 이렇게 시작된 그의

3D 컨셉은 디지털 시대를 만나며 또 한번의 커다란 혁명을 이루게 되었고

그의 무한한 상상력을 더욱 잘 보여 줄 수 있을 뿐만 아니라 주름잡기

(cut-paste-fold)와 같은 테크닉 마저 잘 표현 할 수 있게 되었다. 창의적이고

유머러스하며 역동성마저 느껴지는 그의 작품들은 현재 팝아트와 거리예술의

경계를 넘나들며 미국, 중동, 스칸디나비아, 유럽에서 소개되고 있다
