OBJECTIVE:To Develop a Collection of Coordinated Textile Surfaces for a Space

SPACE SELECTED:Outdoor Retreat

PRODUCTS: Bed Spread, Screens, Table Runner, Cushions, Carpet & Lamp shade.

CONCEPT :There is an urgent need for transparency in the Political scenario globally, a deep sense of insecurity in the Economy and a craving for assurance in the Ecology. Addressing these needs could be a play of Opacity, Translucency and Transparency. Soft and comfortable material that is bio-degradable and provides a sense of assurance. Analogous and Monochromatic schemes could be leading to a sense of Harmony. Refraining from harsh chemicals, repurposing and reusing locally available material should be the direction to head for.

DESIGN PROJECT 2:Floorscapes

USER GROUP STUDIED: Kite Makers at Ahmedabad

PROBLEM: Inadequate sitting arrangement while working and lack of space in the kite workshops.

CONCEPT: •Convertible bedding-cum-seat which can be used Indoors. •It should be portable, stackable, low maintenance, ergonomic, cushioning and cost-efficient.

OBJECTIVE: The objective was to develop designs which are informed by an investigation of the social, cultural, functional and economic contexts of the user’s needs.

Samples were woven on Handloom for testing the performance of different materials as weft.

EXPLORATIONS:

Page 9: Portfolio_Mainak Dey

Portfolio | Mainak Dey | Textile Design

•The craft itself was taken as an inspiration. How the craftsmen fold the paper into a square piece before pasting the sticks to it, was further looked into.

•The folding of a square piece into a triangle and opening it again for making the kite has been translated to the product.

•When the rug is folded it can serve the purpose of a SEAT during the daytime, and when unfolded it becomes the MATTRESS for the same person at night.

CONCEPT:

Page 10: Portfolio_Mainak Dey

PROTOTYPES:

Can be used as a Seat when folded.

When opened can be made into a Bedding.

Page 11: Portfolio_Mainak Dey

EXPLORATIONS:

Explorations were made on paper for understanding colour and composition of the rug.

CONCLUSION:

The two types of rugs - one with slits and chindi and the other without slits and woven with yarn could be targetted at two different markets.

The foldable rug is more apt for the kite makers from the functionality point of view while the inlay rug could use wool or other expensive weft for a better finish and feel. Wool would make the rug more expensive but that would make it a better product for home furnishing - which might be preferred by a niche market willing to pay the extra bit.

PROJECT: Exploring Surfaces On Porcelain And Stoneware Based On A Concept

DELIVERABLES:Ceramic Surfaces

CONCEPT: MOVING PIXELSLooking at the fast track life of Mumbai –A huge population travels to Mumbai daily, from the suburbs, for work and again goes back. So there is a constant shuffling happening everywhere. If we try to imagine that in terms of pixels for the fun of it and try to see how its constantly changing at a glance we come to interesting visuals. Reflections of passing vehicles or pedestrians on an glass/mirror or juxtaposed activities caught over a period in the same frame.
